Salumeria Ovello has become one of those places I look forward to having all week long. The smell of fresh warm focaccia coming out of the oven, simple ingredients that actually taste fresh, and sandwiches that somehow feel both light and deeply satisfying at the same time. Simple ingredients done really well; fresh meats, crisp vegetables, soft bread straight from the oven. It's the kind of lunch that reminds you how good simple food can be when the ingredients are quality. The owner and staff always seem genuinely happy to be there, and it gives the whole place such a warm and welcoming feeling. They also have little Italian drinks, snacks, and specialty goodies that make it fun to grab something extra alongside your lunch. It's a smaller little shop, so I recommend taking your sandwich to go and eating over at the Sonoma Plaza. Such a special little spot in Sonoma. read more

I was doing a day of exploration in Sonoma --- mainly the missions --- and arrived somewhere in-and-around Vallejo House. As I was heading back to the square (where there is an abundance of restaurants), I didn't want the busyness of the scene; thankfully, I got on Instagram, typed "good eats in Sonoma", and BAM! Salumeria Ovello popped up on my feed, and thank goodness it did! An easy 4-minute walk from Vallejo House, Salumeria Ovello is owned by Andrea, who is a Michelin-star chef from the area of Piedmont, Italy. Having been to Italy twice this past year alone, I remember quite well the quality and taste of the classed Italian Sandwiches. The worker who served at the counter was very helpful, and within the restaurant --- there are just a few seats. I'd say, 3 tables with two seats at each table. For my food, I decided to order the Massimo --- which is on "sliced Focaccia, and has sun dried tomatoes, stracciatella di burrata, prosciutto cotto, basil pesto and crumbled taralli (crackers)". Each sandwich is made fresh-to-order, and you can taste the quality. Each ingredient worked together in harmony, and to satisfy the americani in me, I definitely enjoyed the taralli in the sandwich --- reminded me of putting chips in my sandwiches in school. While I waited, Andrea also brought out some slices of salami for me to try --- free of charge, which was very kind of him to do. All in all, if you want to get away from the busyness of the Mission Square, take a 4-minute walk to Salumeria Ovello, and you'll find a little piece of Italy in Sonoma! Ciao tutti! read more

Ovello's brings you back to experience a great taste you discovered here. I personally cannot get enough of their pesto and fresh pasta! This pesto is so light but with a perfect flavor! Wow absolutely delicious Italian sandwiches! They look simple but don't be fooled! We were thoroughly impressed and blown away by both the taste and quality and the amazing service. We ordered the mortadella and porchetta paninis which come on focaccia bread. All the meats and bread are made in house amongst many other items. We were also given samples of their sopressata and focaccia. We will undoubtedly come back again the next time we're in Sonoma. read more

4.5 Stars Great authentic salumeria, food made with love and a clean and welcoming atmosphere. I was thrilled to find my fav Chinotto, only reason this isn't 5 full stars is because we only tried 2 paninis and some sourdough (so far). Also, if they've made their sourdough loaves I highly recommend taking one back home, so crispy and delicious. They're pretty pricey loaves, but sourdough is labor intensive and you can taste the quality and time put into each perfect loaf. Would absolutely come back when in the area! read more

Probably more a 3.5 star, but rounding up because the shop is so cute. Really cute Italian deli in Sonoma. We stumbled upon this near where we were staying, and stopped by for lunch. Perhaps not the place to go if you're in a rush, the shop didn't seem well equipped to handle more than 2-3 customers at a time, so it ended up taking a while to get our food. We got the massimo panino (sliced focaccia, sun dried tomatoes, stracciatella di burrata, prosciutto cotto, basil pesto and crumbled taralli crackers) and the porchetta panino (focaccia, porchetta, arugula). Both were good but a tad too oily for me. I think I slightly preferred the porchetta, mostly because I didn't love the use of the crumbled crackers in the massimo (although my boyfriend, on the other hand, really liked the crunch of the crackers, so it's really personal preference). Also tried some of their sonoma salumi (good, but I'm just not a big salami person). read more

I was looking for a sandwich, so when I found this specialty shop with a 5-star review I was excited to try it because I love focaccia bread on a sandwich. I eat vegetarian, so I was a bit disappointed that there were zero vegetarian sandwiches on the menu. The guy behind the counter suggested that they could leave the prosciutto off the Parma sandwich. It's fluffy layers of mascarpone cheese cream with lady fingers soaked in a bit of booze and espresso. Beautiful place. This is a salami purists kind of shop. Got the charcuterie plate for two which had multiple meats, cheeses, and fruits. Great value. Got a salad with fresh barata which was good. Two pieces of freshly baked focassia which was a great accompaniment to the salami plate. This is an awesome Italian food shop in Sonoma. We got a recommendation to visit from a winery we were at to check this place out. They have a large variety of cheese, salami and anything else needed to make a charcuterie board. They have lots of imported food items from Italy like pastas, tomato sauce, nuts, and chocolate. The employee there was super friendly and let us sample some meats. He was also fluent in Italian. The shop kind of reminds me of Eataly in LA but a more condensed store. Decided to try this shop based on high yelp rating, but regretting my decision. Ordered the pastrami sandwich for $15. At first glance, it looked tasty, but upon first bite, I noticed it had no meat. On the second bite in, found a thinly piece of pastrami hiding under the cabbage and condiments. The single slice of pastrami didn't even reach the edges of the small ciabatta bread it perched upon. For a place that sells Italian meat by the pound, they do not emphasize meat. I would give this shop zero stars if it was an option. read more

I had no idea this place was here, but I believe they were recently closed for four months and just had a grand re-opening. Wife and I ate one of the best Italian sandwiches of my life today (panini on flatbread). Far and away the best sandwich I have ever had in Sonoma, and for what it is worth I lived in Italy for 6 months and ate my way through much of the country. The owner/chef is Italian. We have yet to be disappointed by anything from ovello! Our go tos are the wild boar and picante, and we have had many delicious cheeses as well! The duck prosciutto is a can't miss if they have it. To bypass this restaurant is a mistake. The humble sandwich, here at this place, is elevated to its highest form. The Porchetta is divine, the Emerie is a masterpiece. Try the salami and indulge in their lemon ricotta cake. Everything here is delightful. Salumeria Ovello is a must-stop destination if you are in the Sonoma/Napa area. Yummy! This salumeria was next to our VRBO. We ventured in and met the owner who was gracious and cut 3 types of salami for us to try (Sonoma, Fennel, and Lamb). All were delicious but i was as big fan of both the Sonoma and Lamb. My friends ended up buying the fennel. They had many other types of Salumi which i know were all good. Seems to be a popular place for the locals. This store had a great assortment of European treats and everything was treated with significant love and care. We also bought some sardines and they were delicious that were marinated in some oil and some vinegar. Don't miss out on that. Would highly recommend a trip here before wine tasing so you can munch on meats and other assorted goodies. I saw a cheese section, but didn't buy any since we were loaded up with it. read more

We stumbled upon this little salumeria during a business trip. What a great find! We tried the Porchetta and turkey panini on house made focaccia. They are exceptional! Also everything on the menu looks so authenticly Italian. They made everything in house. Too bad we are here only shortly so could not try everything.
