Quality/Quantity - ESB, closest they had to a red and it fulfilled my needs. Atmosphere - Cool decor and art. See pictures. There is also an arcade here, but it was closed when we arrived. Indoor/outdoor spaces. Dog friendly. Full service or a to-go area. Open 7 days a week from noon until 8pm, 10pm, or midnight. See picture. Yelp's and their website's hours differ slightly. Service - 6 stars. Sorry, I forgot his name, as it has been almost 3 months since I visited. Yes, I am very behind on my Yelps due to my extensive travels. He was so patient, a GREAT ambassador of the brand. We popped in to get out of the rain and try a local beer ... very friendly atmosphere, excellent staff and good beer/cider

We were here years ago ... even pushed a stroller with our youngest up those gigantic hills ... to get here from the cruise port. So glad we came back again ... sans kiddos (who are now in their 20's)!! Great selection of beers (including dome awesome IPAs) and even friendlier beer staff. We ended up getting a nice flight along with some swag to go (bag, mug, stickers). Also, don't miss the (secret) arcade bar in the basement along with (beautiful) outdoor deck. Propeller Brewing has a nice little dog-friendly taproom where you can try their wide variety of beer. Located just down the road from a number of good restaurants (EDNA, the Foggy Goggle, etc) this makes for a nice pre or post dinner stop. Propeller is one of the three breweries I would definitely recommend trying, along with Unfiltered and Good Robot. I particularly liked their Stone Fruit Ale, Dark Berry Sour, and IPAs. read more

When I walked into Propeller, I was not a beer person. Now I can say I am a Prosecco AND beer person. I also got to visit with the Aaron Emery, the Marketing Director and was inspired by his passion for brewing & beer. He walked me through a flight and had me believing! Because I'm not a beer person (or reformed) I don't remember everything but I DO know I really liked the "ESB" ("Extra Special Brew" or "English Style Batch") - it copper colored, Smooth and Full bodied! Another reason I dig Propellor: they collaborate with one of my other Halifax favorites, Halifax Distilling - their ginger beer is used in the Halifax Distilling Stormy Weather drink. One of the first few brave souls in Halifax to venture into the world of craft brewing, Propeller is the one that got me started on good beer, and I have a lots of fond memories. Their brewery tours were always a blast, you could go downstairs to see the production facilities (now moved to Dartmouth I believe), or just chill upstairs the whole time and get your drink on. I've always found the staff to be friendly, helpful, and impressively tolerant and sometimes encouraging of less than mature behaviour. There's lots of options to choose from, and lately I've been a big fan of their rye IPA. Bonus points for having a refundable deposit on their growlers. There's no reason not to for bottles that aren't damaged (*glares at certain other local beer dispensaries*). read more

Came here with the intent of getting some tasters. We were sorely disappointed to find out they do not have a testing room. As a San Diego native, where virtually all microbreweries let you sample their beer at the brewery, I was bummed to find out that Propeller will only give you tasters if you schedule a tour with a large group in advance (10 or more people?). The only brewery in Halifax that we found with a walk-in-off-the-street tasting room is Garrison Brewing (which we really enjoyed). read more

I think this was stop 3 or 4 on our Halifax beer tour (things were getting a bit hazy by this point). The tap room was pretty full on a Saturday night with a private party but service at the bar was still decent despite the party's host loudly pointing us out as not part of their group (not Propeller's fault at all). I was impressed with the large selection and went with a pint of their Stone Fruit - fruity, light, easy drinking. This was my first time in the Propeller Brewing Company. There were a few people here and some were getting samples of the beer before buying, which I think was great. We however were not there to buy Beer, I know why go there. We were there to buy some of their pop. We thought for some crazy reason, that because they allowed samples of beer, we could get a sample of one flavor of the pop , the orange. They carry four flavours of pop, we knew we wanted the root beer, but we had not tried the orange or the other kinds. When we asked the girl behind the counter if we could have a sample of the orange, she popped a head like we were crazy, and point blank said no. That was it and just stood behind the counter. My gosh you think we were asking for the recipe or something. She definitely needs a few pointers on customer service and would it hurt to crack a smile. The little brewery that could. High quality, heavenly beer that packs a flavor punch. They never disappoint, but this year they really outdid themselves. As always, the pumpkin ale was sublime. The Nocturne Ale, however, is out of this world. One tip- If you're running in to pick up a few pints, don't park in the Staples parking lot...the security guard will have a word with you. This place has a weird ambiance going on. The walls are very instagrammable and hip, but the furniture sort of seemed like it had been taken from a bodega or someone's basement. Really, it just makes it feel more...authentic. I came in to hang out and read like the antisocial weirdo I am. But the bartender was so friendly and enthusiastic it won me over. We ended up chatting quite a bit and it was a lovely time. I tried most of the beers and was really impressed. Halifax has something good going on. From that I know the bar (not the brew shop) is a new thing, so if you're looking for a chill space (or a place to host an event) this is an excellent spot. read more

The Prop Shop is an amazing little place and a perfect stop off on a weekend (or weekday for that matter) downtown walk about. A type of beer for literally everyone! Not only can you pick up bottles of all things Propeller but also Growlers! Growlers are the 2L jugs of Propeller that you've likely seen people trundling around with. Growlers cost $9 for your initial deposit (money you can get back as long as you don't break your growler) and only cost $9 to replenish. That's right folks: $9 for 2L of beer. Don't find prices like that everyday especially not for non-swill like micro brews. (sorry molson) The Russian Imperial Stout is the only beer that costs a tad more at $11/refill. I strongly encourage you to stop off at the Prop Shop and try one of the numerous delicious brands, or pick up a few and head on up for a sit on the citadel. Type of Propeller to be found at the shop: Honey Wheat Ale, Pale Ale, London Style Porter, Honey Wheat Ale, IPA, Extra Special Bitter, Pumpkin Ale, Bohemian Style Pilsener, Hefeweizen, Pale Ale and the Revolution. Sodas can be found in the following types as well: Vanilla Cream Soda, Orange Soda, Ginger Beer and Root Beer. I like beer. I like their beer. I visit this shop ever couple of weeks for a refill of the growlers. Always have plenty on tap and the do beer mixes which I quite enjoy! If there is any lacklustre comment to be made, it's that service is uneven. Sometimes I go in there and the staff is helpful, giving advice. Other times, it is perfunctory. Get me in, get me out. I'm not a beer drinker, but maybe some day I will be. I find a hard time distinguishing the flavors and subtle differences between brews. So you'll have to take everyone else's word that Propeller's beer is some of the best. I love Propeller for their non-alcoholic selections. They have some of the best flavored pops around. I like to think of the Crush brand pop as MacDonald's, while Propeller is a delicious local gastropub with a talented chef. They have three sodas right now (and hopefully more in the future), vanilla cream soda, root beer, and ginger beer. All three are deliciously amazing. At the start of every summer we pick up a huge case of mixed soda to slowly drink while at the beach or BBQ'ing. The Root Beer is nice and strong but not too overpowering. The cream soda is one of my favorites of any brand. Ginger beer is a family favorite, as Propeller is the only local seller of this flavor that I'm aware of. It has a nice bite to the taste, and I love how it maintains the ginger smell. It'd be nice to see a orange or even lime pop from them. I consider myself some sort of soda expert, having tried all the brands the grocery and candy stores have to offer. Propeller is definitely up there in terms of quality and taste. read more

100th Review! And it goes to Propeller Brewery! Don't let the quiet snake lurking in the grass small microbrewery fool you. They pack a huge punch. First of all, they do have a decent selection of beers. Anything from IPA, to Bitter, to Season things like heffewiesen and pumpkin. They do offer tasters if you want to wet your palette a bit, but I find that they often run out of varieties or do not have samples of this or that on tap. One of the coolest things about this place is the "tours" that they hold every wednesday from 6:30-8:00. Now I really use the term "tour" very loosely. Basically you go into the side room (which is a bar essentially) and you drink. That is all... oh, and if you want to follow a guy down to see some kettles and brewing stuff you can too. How many beers can you "tour" in 1.5 hours? Another thing that is my absolute favorite about propeller brewery is their sodas; specifically their ginger beer. Propeller ginger beer is BY FAR the best ginger beer I'VE EVER HAD!!! I swear every time I go over there I try and bring back a case. I've even asked the brewery to ship me some (apparently they don't do that =/). If you like ginger beer, definitely try it. It's got enough bite which I like and it's not overly sweet like some of the other competitors. I've recently found out they changed their bottles to clear ones. I guess cops didn't like me walking around and driving whilst sipping my ginger beer which is in a generic brown glass bottle. Now coming from Toronto, here's something that was kinda new to me. They have these containers there called "growlers" and they cost you about 15 dollars or so and have 2 Litres of magic liquid in them. Once you finish one, you can bring it back and have it re-filled for 8-9 dollars (it's 8 dollars on wednesday! SCORE!). read more

I hate slash love when I write reviews that make me eat my words. You see, I'm not a beer guy. If it's cold, void of any remarkable flavour, and preferably served by the pitcher, I like it. If it's brewed to impress beer-geeks, I will be no part of it. I save that sort of alcohol fandom for cocktails. As a result, I always thought of Propeller as a microbrewery for people who love microbrews, who are able to appreciate 'hoppiness' in a sense that doesn't relate to cute bunnies, and who scoff at the mainstream cold one. Thus, not for me. Still, I needed a hefty order of beer for a party, intended to turn it into a morning beer cocktail, and figured Propeller would be a good place to start. After a funny look from a staff member at the mention of 'beermosa,' and a couple of tastings to find something that would work, she pointed me in the direction of their Hefeweisen and I was sold. The crisp, white beer was drinkable on its own for this beer-n00b, and went perfectly with my plans - mixed it half and half with orange juice and you've got yourself a great morning. The six-packs were also stupid cheap, or maybe that's just what beer costs...but either way, $13 per six-pack seems damn good to me. I still feel like this is a place for those more advanced on the beer appreciation scale and I'd say that's how it should be. Beer is not my preference, but from time to time I will invest in a few proper brewskies. Alongside this blue moon of a time, is the Propeller Brewery. Its the Brewery Tour! For whatever reason, I've ended up joining this charade more than twice, less than 4 times. Its about $16 for 2 hours of all you can drink Propellor Beer. Whether its worth it or not depends on your love for Propellor and your ability to consume. I admit, I barely finished two, so it wasn't exactly worth the coin. I just can't get the whole timed-out drinking thing down. But it was an enjoyable time for sure. Staff was friendly and accommodating, providing the full blown Propellor selection. Guests had the option to take a downstairs tour of the brewery; however, the tour wasn't much more than walking downstairs, looking around and smelling like hampster cage shavings.... This is a fun idea for a larger group of friends who love beer. The room holds a long table thats perfect for conversation. Tv and music are optional via satellite services. I'd suggest this for a nice switch up to the regular night out for the beer friendly. read more

If you're planning on staying with friends in the city for a week or so (as yours truly did) take the time to invest in one for the week. You'll be glad you did. For certain you can swing by here and choose from an inspired selection. The Prop Shop is the place you thank your lucky stars for when you find yourself sans drinks and in need. It's a great neighborhood resource, dishing out fantastic locally concocted beers. My favorite, the Pilsner, which for some reason isn't easy to find in the city, is pretty much always in stock here. Plus you can find any seasonal brews that Propeller has come up with at this handy north-end/centrally located store. If you're feeling saucy and brave, you can book a brewery tour, which pretty much equals unlimited beer (or soda for the non-beer drinkers) for you and your closest bazillion friends. It's cheap and can be a sloppy and entertaining time. If you're looking for Propeller paraphernalia, perhaps for a beer aficionado in your life, the Prop Shop sells tees and mugs and the like. Came here to try some beers and pick up a growler. The staff was super friendly and explained to us that, due to liquor license laws, they were only allowed to serve pints on Wednesday nights. Regardless, we had some small tasters and decided on a growler of the English Mild, although all of their beers were good. They also do tours here, but I think they are for pre-arranged groups of 10 or more except for Wednesdays. I enjoyed it here, and if you like good beer it's worth a visit. read more

Best. Beer. Ever. After living away from Halifax for a year, the best part about returning was being able to get Propeller Beer! Your best bet is to invest in a growler ($9).... This is a bottle that you keep and refill for the same price. It is the equivalent of about 6 beer, and it is poured right out of the tap- so fresh and delicious. What can I say about Propeller brewery that nobody else has said yet? How about the staff made the experience for me, they were very informative and provided my g/f and I with samples of all kinds. The enthusiasm they had was great and I will miss visiting here, I'm coming back to Halifax next year and hopefully the porter beer is still around. Love all of their beers but its a tossup between the IPA and Porter as to which is the best. I like that they don't go in for that 'flavoured beer' crap like some other local craft brewers (exception being the pumpkin beer, I guess). The very friendly and helpful staff at the Propeller Brewery made this a delicious experience. The girls were very knowledgeable about their product and were will share all the info with us. All the beers were tasty and enjoyable. The brewery was very clean and well kept. You don't have to take a tour in order to sample so just walk on in.. there's no wait time. A few brew stand outs included: IPA, London Style Porter and Honey Wheat Ale The staff also has lots of info on the area bars and dining scene. Just ask and they will be willing to share. Tip: It right down the road from the Citadel so it worth the stop over after visiting the fort. read more

My favorite brewery in town, so glad they have a sweet store front (known as the Prop Shop) to buy from. Get your beer in the 1.89 L "growlers" to both cut down on your waste and make your beer budget go farther. You can refill them on a return visit with any beer on tap, and on Wednesdays refills are $1 off. Aside from the beer, I also just love being in the store. There's usually good music playing, the staff are always friendly and relaxed and the place is beautiful; one wall is made entirely of clear glass bottles. On a whim, we stopped by the Propeller Cold Beer store one night last weekend. Stepping inside the store, we immediately gravitated to the coolers located behind the sales desk. We browsed the menu of beers available and were debating the merits of one over the other when a staff member presented us with a small glass containing a taste of one of the beers we'd been discussing. We happily accepted and shared a couple of different draughts together. Eventually, we decided on the IPA and the Hefeweizen - IPA for my boyfriend and the banana/clove undertones of the Hefeweizen for me. We bought six-packs, but if you are a quicker beer consumer than we, try a Growler - $9 gets you a huge crock of beer fresh from the tap. Refills are only $9 ongoing, with no obligation to wash the empty Growler before turning it in for a new one. read more
