My husband and I are not skaters, we didn't know exactly what to do when our son showed an interest in skateboarding because we couldn't really teach him how to ride. We were recommend to seek out proper Rideshop for training by a local skate shop. He started with Proper and very quickly became a great skater. He is so happy with the coaches and how they are great mentors and motivators... he is excited to show them when he finally gets that new trick and they are just as excited for him. We love Proper!! My 12-yr old son and 9-yr old nephew recently got interested in skateboarding so dad started asking around. 3 different friends recommended Proper. We went down to check it out. It was awesome! I was amazed by the ramps, stairs, rails, etc... , the age and abilities of the riders, and I could see everything from the parents waiting area!!! We took them today for their first lesson. The student to instructor ratio was very low (4:1), so the kids got a lot of individual attention. Safety lessons first. All kids required to wear helmets and pads. Riding, stopping, and falling lessons. Then some small ramps. The instructors were AWESOME!!! They encouraged and instructed with patience for every kid at many different levels. The kids had a great time and so did we! Definitely going to sign up for more classes! read more

Proper Rideshop is such a wonderful, family owned, business that fosters the love of skateboarding for my 2 kiddos, in a safe and fun environment. Owners Matt and Samantha are the BEST. They go above and beyond in welcoming our kids, accommodating our schedule and maximizing their learning. Coaches Max and Max (yes, there are 2 Maxes) are so good at teaching the kids the "proper" way to skate. They are patient, kind and know how to teach the kids in a way that makes it fun. My kids' skills have improved drastically since taking their classes and awesome camps. It's a great way to challenge them, reach goals and grow their confidence. Matt and Samantha were great to work with. If you have a youngster who's interested in skateboarding and you want to provide him a place to learn the basics Proper Rideshop is a great start. We took our two elementary schoolers for the one hour intro class. In that one hour, they learned how to wear the correct protective gear, how to ride, how to do some basic tricks, and, most importantly, how to fall correctly to avoid injury. They both came away with more confidence and excitement to keep riding. Important to note - Proper doesn't just teach the basics. It's a great place for experienced riders, too. read more

My daughter has been going to Proper Ride Shop for almost 5 years now. She has learned so much over the years through their 8 week clinics and week long camps. She has gained confidence and learned proper technique to take her skills into the skate parks and even some contests. She has also gained many lifelong friendships from going. Well worth the cost, safe and fun for the kids. I highly recommend. Also to mention they have on site skate shop where you can buy all your kids skate gear and the best quality gear(which is very important), they have everything you need except shoes. read more

My 7 year old started lessons here a couple of months ago, and loves it. I have to admit, I was skeptical and concerned about safety and injury. But the teaching staff are amazing. Good teacher to student ratio. Fun activities that fit the skills of each student. I love that my daughter can watch other kids - and girls- shred on the ramps! Wow so super fun for kids! Kids took the 1st 101 shred lesson (mandatory) yesterday and my 1st grade twins loved it. They had never skateboarded before. Their teacher, Max, was so patient, kind and challenging. They got to try all of the basic stuff plus a lot of extras. Sam (the owner) is so friendly and also very patient. We had a hard time scheduling a time but she worked with me via text, email and phone. So sweet and helpful! My kids pretty much hate every lesson we sign them up for but they really loved this one. My nine year old son got his start skateboarding here, and I can't say enough great things about Proper! It stresses safety first and they really make it stick through practice and role modeling by the adults who the kids look up to. Their classes are super cool and my son couldn't wait to go each week. We are so fortunate to have found Proper! Our little 5 year old is full of spunk and energy and chose skateboarding as his sport. We started out at public skate parks all over the island to find one safe enough for a 5 year old to skate in ... well if you've been around these dark/unsavory/graffiti-ridden head-bashing concrete corners, you'll agree it's not somewhere for a mom and toddler team to safely hang-out. Not that the teenagers were purposely trying to run my little 3-ft Kai over, but they just didn't see him as they sped down the ramps at what seemed like a 100 mph! We accidentally found Proper when we took little Kai to the Hickam skatepark where they have a safe kid-friendly environment with some crazy unreal ramps, and found the "camps" run by Proper. Incredible child/coach ratio, great equipment, great philosophy "no helmet, no ride" of safety first. These camps run all-day, serious instructions mixed in with fun stunt lessons, art breaks, pizza bonanzas, and contests to show-off to parents their new skills at the end of the camp. Coach Matt and Manager Sam are extremely vigilant of the kids and staff so that everyone is accountable, well equipped for the sport, no rough housing/no swearing... and great on keeping every child well hydrated throughout. The very first day we showed up for one of the camps, Coach Matt sat everyone down, looked them straight in the eyes and told them "This is an extreme sport, not one for wimps, so buckle down and get ready for this. If you can't handle falls and nicks, it's best to get out now." We then KNEW this was the class for our Kai - who regularly climbs and jumps off of anything taller than him including his Dada. The facility is a MUST SEE! Ramps for every level, challenging, clean, shop stocked with everything you need to skateboard! Oh and even an added gimme for us mommies - they offer mommy nights so we can empathize with our keiki after a night of hip slams and bruises. When not in class they offer "Shred sessions" so the kids can be dropped off safely for enclosed hours of all-out skateboarding - like supervised play. Enough time for mommy to go get the groceries, get nails done, invent transparent aluminum, and grab a relaxing latte on the way back. But register for all of the above (great app for signing up on-the-fly) early because everything fills up quick.
