I've been a loyal customer for almost 5 years now and will continue to come to Derrick even when I move an hour away to Old Bridge. I stumbled upon Prospect Exxon when I moved here 5 years ago and have NEVER brought my car anywhere else. Actually, I sold my Eclipse that Derrick took such good care of and have free oil changes/service on my new Nissan but still bring it to Derrick. I've never had to bring the car back because something wasn't fixed or wasn't fixed properly the first time. I've had everything from oil changes, brakes and rotors, O2 sensors, caliper rebuild, major interval service (60k, etc), tires patched and balanced, rim repair, oil pan replacement. Everything but a new engine! I even had them install the splash guards on my new car and it was like $30. The dealer wanted $160!!! Derrick and his guys truly care about you and your car. They respect ALL customers. Young, old, male, female, exotic car or beater. You get treated the same. The labor rates are very fair, you can bring your own parts or request special stuff (cross drilled rotors, etc) and they'll order it for you. They've even driven me home and picked me up. Derrick has had me come along for test drives and even rode along as a passenger on a busy Saturday morning so I could show him exactly what was happening. He just said "My customers know their cars. The first time I came to Exxon on prospect was many years ago. I was pricing out a timing belt on my Toyota Highlander (which is a difficult timing belt to change). The first place wanted $1200. The second $800. Prospect Exxon did it for $600. Always a pleasant experience. Comfortable waiting room. Wonderful staff. It's hard to find a good mechanic. Derrick and his team are as good as it gets. If want a quick review, these guys are HONEST and FAIR. It's been a very long time since I've trusted mechanics as much as I do with the group of guys who work here. They're very friendly and will take time to explain everything to you. If anything, the guys who work here love what they do which speaks volume when it comes to service. Its a complete 180 to the usually grouchy guy who overcharges because he thinks you don't know any better (Aamco in Bloomfield tried to convince me one spark plug was $19). Took my car here to get my brakes checked, they gave me an estimate quickly (after testing them and a visual exam) and from my understanding was very fair & honest. Derrick was very kind to explain why I needed to replace certain parts, and actually took the time to show me how the parts in question work. Interacted with both Derrick and Dave. Moved to the area and was worried about finding a reputable and trust worthy mechanic since my old one is over 30 minutes away. The sign of a good shop is when they honestly tell you what you NEED and what you might consider. I brought the truck in for rotors and the guy called with an estimate and explained that front rotors in addition to the back ones were warped. He said as long as i didn't mind the sound, it wasn't necessary to change yet since the brakes still had some meat. I know other shops that would have pushed for the extra work. Brought my car here for a Hail Mary second opinion after another shop told me that the knock I was hearing was internal, and that I would need a rebuild, or new engine. They said the car wasn't worth the cost of fixing, and that I should simply sell it for whatever I could get at that point. This first garage I took it to was not trying to rip me off, they simply mis-diagnosed in a very big way. Took it to Derrick and literally, within the first minute, or two, after looking under the hood, pointed into the engine compartment and told me the noise I was hearing was coming from the pulley wheel, NOT the motor! Just got back from Prospect Exxon and had a very positive experience. Clean shop, very polite and responsive staff. I came in thinking I needed to replace my front brake pads, since I had the old ones for 30k miles. They got my car up within minutes, checked out the front brakes, and said that I still have 60-70% left in them, so no need to change them. Then they checked the rear brakes, took calipers off, made sure everything is fine. They did a thorough inspection of the car to make sure there are no other issues. Throughout this time, the mechanic was walking me through everything he was doing and explaining how things worked. Awesome guy! He spent easily 30-45min on the car and charged me for maybe 30 min of labor. More than fair. Will definitely come back! read more

Thanks to all your Yelp reviews and recommendations from a local group on Facebook, I went here for an oil change and to replace a headlight and brake light months ago to judge the shop for myself. Quick, considerate and honest about my inquiries for other services I was told I needed by my dealer. Just from simple dialogue and an observation of the men working the shop, I knew I had finally found a reliable place to take my car! I don't know anything about cars apart from what my dad still advises... but I'm married now and stay home with 2 babies. I need quick, affordable and reliable, for sure. I shopped out my repairs to a few shops in town but Derrick was the most responsive of everyone. He asked me questions up front and asked me to bring my car in for a look. I have a 2012 Honda Civic which needed a new drive belt tensioner and shocks and struts. One of his mechanics took the car for a drive and Derrick himself took a look. I called this shop based soley on Yelp reviews. My 2005 Chrysler 300C's check engine lite was on and giving off (P3400) engine codes. I was told by AutoZone that code indicated either a bad PCM ($300-$450 in parts) or $45 VVT Valve. I then did reasearch on the subject and was hit with figures from $200-$1k :-( (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p3400-obd-ii-trouble-code-cylinder-deactivation-system-bank-1-by-jamahl-walker). I spoke with Derrick and he said I should bring it in and he would look it over for FREE so long as he did not have to spend more than 15 mins to identify the problem. This place is the REAL DEAL! There were customers there from Staten Island that were repeat customers! I had VERY low oil pressure, which I had checked just days prior and it seemed fine. Net Net: I needed an oil change with the "PROPER" OIL viscosity as specified by the manufacturer. $40 later, engine lite was off and I was back on the road!!!! This shop could have easily parted me from my wallet and told me anything! I immediately left and returned the same day with a 2nd car that I use as a back up to get around town. I was given estimates as low as $1.8k-$2.5k at a previous shop to repair my 23yr old Camry that keeps shutiing off even while hwy driving. These guys called me back the same day and said a sensor costing $35 was bad! That part plus labor was $120. I told them to keep going thu it and call me once the invoice hit $500. I'm back on the road after changing temp sensor, new battery and battery cable, all for $300!!!!! read more

It's very hard to find an HONEST mechanic.....i first went here after being impressed with the reviews online, and I have to say they were 100% CORRECT. These guys are true mechanics, which unfortunately many shops don't have these days. They were able to diagnose a problem that TWO different shops were unable to figure out, and they speak to you in a way that you can understand what's wrong with your car. I've been here several times since the first and have been very happy every time ! Saved me around 700 bucks vs if I had listened to my local Pep Boys about my oil pan. Pep Boys recommended I replace my whole oil pan and estimated price to be over 700 dollars for parts and labor. I've had some not-so-great experiences with mechanics in the past, so I'm always a bit nervous taking my car in. I needed to get a problem with my car checked out and after a recommendation from a friend and reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to take it to Prospect Exxon. Derrick gave me a detailed estimate with all of my options (my car is almost a decade old, so I wasn't eager to spend an exorbitant amount of money) and even made sure to include how much extra it would cost if they had to add freon, as well. The cost was definitely more affordable than I expected and now my car is working as it should be. This is the first experience I've had where I feel like I can really trust a mechanic! I had busted my Rim on a pot hole. Derrick took care of me with out any prior notice. He did so very quickly and professionally. The very next day, as I was returning to pick up my tire. (i left ot there so i didnt have to wait) I busted my Rim on the donut spare. I got towed to his shop and I did not give any prior notice to Derrick (which I should have). HONEST. It's extremely difficult to find an honest mechanic. I moved a few years ago and I've been looking hard for an honest local mechanic. I've tried a lot of different places and I've literally (I mean literally) caught each one of them cutting corners. The problem is it's too hard for normal people to verify the work has to be done or even done. I mean have you ever checked to see if your brakes really needed to be replaced? I've even gotten my car back with the same dirty oil! Recently, I found Prospect Exxon and these guys are the real deal. GREAT PRICES. I compared their prices by going through my old invoices. Prospect's prices seem pretty good. (Actually, I think they should raise their prices a little bit. I know this comment might hurt me but I like to tell it like it is.) One thing that they might change is perhaps their oil change prices. I only checked for synthetic but Prospect had one of the higher oil change prices, even more than some dealers. They use Mobil1 which is much more expensive but I think it makes them appear expensive when they really aren't. QUALITY. They really seem to care about their work. They will go out of the way to do really make sure you're happy. I was really surprised by some things that they did like drive my car around to check up for some noises that I said there were. One small thing impressed me. Prospect saw that my tire valve caps were missing and put on new green ones without asking. These guys appear to be nice and honest people.
