Went to the dealership (the one next town over) for a simple oil change. Within an hour I get text with a video from the dealership recommending $7000 worth of work. I of course declined and told them to just finish the oil change but when I picked up the car, you bet I drove straight to Montclair Motorwerks from there. Ken and his team took a look at the vehicle and while some of the repairs recommended by the dealership were legitimate, others weren't really needed. The honesty was refreshing. Turned out the vehicle did need some extensive work (thanks Dad). The car was ready within a few days and the price (which was still in the four figures to reflect the scope of the work done) was a fraction of what the dealership would have charged. Additionally I was very careless in leaving something extremely valuable in the vehicle. One of the technicians found it and turned it over to Frankie for safe keeping. Anybody with questionable morals could have taken it and I wouldn't have known. When I picked up the car, it was there for me and while I was of course embarrassed, I was grateful. I'm under no impression that BMWs are cheap vehicles to own and maintain. They aren't. But the high degree of trust I gained from my first encounter with Ken, Frankie an their team made Montclair Motorwerks my go-to since then.

This shop's negligence put my life in danger…read more I had my car towed to Park Street Automotive with clear symptoms of a critical suspension failure: a violent lurch to the left when braking, a loud rumbling, and a worsening steering wobble. They ignored these critical safety symptoms and diagnosed only a noisy exhaust. When I questioned this, they were dismissive and, after the repair, told me to "take it on the freeway for a spin and see what happens." I took it to another shop for a second opinion instead. They immediately found the real problem: the front control arm had failed and my wheel was literally about to fall off. The issue had nothing to do with the exhaust. A mechanic who fails to perform a basic safety inspection and tells you to "see what happens" with a failing front end is not someone who should ever be trusted with your vehicle or your safety.

Even after moving away, we would often make the trip back just to have them inspect our car because we knew they would give us honest advice. A while back, a chain oil change shop told us we needed new brake pads. We came here for a second opinion, and they explained that the rust we were seeing was normal and would wear off with regular local driving. They were right. A year later, another shop again tried to sell us brake pads during an oil change. We immediately brought the car here, and after a thorough inspection, they told us the brakes still had about 2,000 miles left. That level of honesty is rare. Instead of recommending unnecessary repairs, they only suggest work that actually needs to be done. Their prices are fair, their workmanship is excellent, and most importantly, they genuinely care about their customers. If you're looking for a trustworthy mechanic, you can bring your car here with confidence. My sister and I have been going to Randy for years--and totally trust him. Just bought a new car and plan on bringing it to him, rather than get ripped off again at Subaru service. Just to give a perfect example of Randy's honesty - For the first 5 years we had our Subaru, we brought it back to the Subaru service dept because we mistakenly thought we had to because of the warranty. After 5 years we went back to Randy. 2 years later, we rec'd a recall from Subaru on the airbags so we had to go back to them to have it fixed. While there they did a "multi-point inspection" and gave me a list of things that had to be done (including rear brakes). The list came out to just under $1300. I just listened and smiled, knowing I had an appt with Randy the following week and would see what he had to say. I was pretty sure I was going to need the rear brakes (since Subaru had told me 2 years before that I needed them) but obviously was not sure of the other items. Randy looked over the car and called to say I needed rear brakes. I asked "anything else" and he said nope- just the brakes. Ended up paying UNDER $400 vs $1300 at Subaru!! We don't put much mileage on our cars but bring them to Randy every 6 months for an oil change and check-up anyway knowing he will never tell us we need something done that is not necessary. DO NOT HESITATE to take your car to D&L. Can definitely trust Randy.
