But then I discovered our garage door was super unbalanced (the spring had lost a lot of tension I guess). This would likely make the new opener unable to function, and garage door springs are not safe for a DIYer to mess with, so I was stuck and decided to call in the professionals. I reached out to a few businesses on Yelp, and... Pros: They responded quickly to my Yelp request with an actual estimate (only company who did) They stuck to their estimated schedule, arriving right in the middle of it Devin is an awesome guy and a super skilled installer who knows what he's doing and more importantly: cares about doing it well! He was really friendly, worked quickly (took about 90 mins altogether for everything), took care of all the little details, cleaned up the area when he was done, and walked me through all the operations of our new door opener at the end. We chatted a bit as he worked and had a pretty good time while still getting everything done blazingly fast. Easy Open accepted Zelle for payment which is super convenient for those of us who never have cash and don't know where their checkbook is! I called four top-rated local companies, told them I thought I might need two springs, and asked them to come inspect and offer quotes: Companies 1 & 2: Recommended replacing the spring with two new springs, quoting $750 up to $1,400 for high-cycle spring packages (almost the cost of a brand-new door). Company 3: Quoted slightly less for two springs, but very honestly suggested just adding one new spring for still even less at $450. Garage Door Man: I spoke with Jim, who noted that a standard 16x7 single-layer door usually only needs one spring. A technician came out the next day, diagnosed that the 3-year-old spring was fine, and simply added torsion to rebalance it. Total cost: $125 with a 90-day labor warranty. While a dual-spring setup might offer backup redundancy, my garage has a side door and two cars parked outside anyway. Rebalancing saved me hundreds--huge appreciation for their honesty and fair pricing!
