First and foremost, shoutout to JUICE for really serving the juice at Protocol. This is my second cut from him here, and everything is just as spot on as the first time. The bald fade was on point, exactly like cuts you see on instagram. He is very meticulous about his craft, and takes extra care to make sure everything is clean and proper. The atmosphere can be described in a single word: vibey. Absolute sick vibes all around, and all the guys love to talk shit and crack jokes about each other- it's hilarious and a great time and makes the hour cut fly by. Hands down one of the worst experiences I've had at a barbershop, went in this morning for a haircut got taken as a walk in by this guy named Lorenzo. I told him what I wanted and to go gentle on the skin bc my scalp is fragile due to acne. The guy completely ignored it went way shorter than suppose to and was really rough with the clippers which made my scalp very aggravated. Not to mention he smelled like alcohol and a bad hangover the entire time. At the end when I was going over my cut to tell him thing I liked and things I wanted to change he told me to get the fuck out and that he was tired of me. Who treats their costumers like this?? I've been going to the same Fantastic Sam's for way too long... Maybe 20 years but for sure since I was in single digits in age, so I've been searching for a good barber because I felt that it was time for a change and a grownup haircut. When researching places, I came across Protocol Barber Shop and wanted to try it out because it's so close to where I currently live and the very positive feedback they had received here on Yelp. I was deterred though because I saw a groupon deal for a barbershop in South El Monte and have been going there for the past few months. That Barbershop is now closed so I finally decided to try Protocol and I'm so glad I did. I made an appointment and I'm super glad I did because it seems if you don't, you can be waiting there for a for long while; at least on a Saturday. It does cost extra if you go in on an appointment but you have to consider what's more important, your time or saving a few bucks. After making a 2pm appointment with anyone as I had no preference, I wasn't seen until about 2:25. Yes, this did annoy me a bit, but my barber got backed up doing an impeccable job on the client before me. Also, I know ish happens. Once I was finally greeted and seen by my barber Mark, I felt in very capable and funny hands. He listened to what I wanted but also gave him some freedom to do what he thought was best, because I never really know what it is I exactly want, and he did a perfect job. I will definitely be returning to Mark while I'm still living in the area. So this was definitely a 4.5-star experience because of the somewhat long wait but I decided to bump it up to 5 instead of 4 for three reasons. First, because Mark did an awesome job, thanks Mark! I'm doing Movemeber and was looking homeless and Mark fixed that. Second, because I could tell Mark was as considerate with me as he was with his previous client and I can appreciate that. My husband and I brought our 5-year-old son here for a walk-in cut today. Although it looked fairly busy, we were greeted immediately by Adrian who was able to cut our son's hair right away. (We did call like 10 minutes before that to ask if they were terribly busy, and they said they weren't, so we made sure to get there quickly). Adrian asked how we wanted his hair cut, listened while we told him where he parted his hair and when we pointed out cowlicks. Our son, who has only been to a kids-centric salon, was a little nervous about being at this new place. So, here is what happened: 1) I called and asked if I can come in in 10 minutes. The guy who picked up the phone told me that I can come in and there would be no one ahead of me. I arrived 7 min. after I called. There were 3 people ahead of me! This was OK since the guy told me that the three people just walked in after I called. So, I waited for my turn... and waited and waited and... 2) While I was waiting, the stylist droops his comb. I was watching him picking up the comp and... no he did not put in the soiled compartment. He just wiped it with his hand and used it on the customers head again! First time visit yesterday. It's a nice little place with four tv screens and the biggest tv is hooked up to a Playstation 3. This place is busy too - I showed up without an appointment and waited about 15 minutes around 11 AM on a Thursday. The barbers are younger guys but you can tell they know what they're doing. Since I had never been there, I signed my name on the sign in sheet and Richie was my barber. I showed him a pic of what I wanted and he did it exactly that way. He even used a straight razor to clean up the back and sides. Very nice! It's inexpensive too - $15 for a walk in, $20 for an appointment and they'll even give you an old school shave with warm towels and a straight razor if you want one. Seniors get a discount too. So the bottom line: Pros - friendly, professional staff who care about what they do and you can tell, take pride in their work. Cons - sometimes wait times can be long. And for you Mom's out there taking your little boys, sometimes music with explicit lyrics is playing in the background and occasionally the clients use explicit language too. All in a all, a great little shop that I will no doubt be returning to with my son. read more

Great shop, I would tell you PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING If you want to get a hair cut here call ahead of time and get an appointment with a barber. It will cost you $20 and you get your hair cut relatively the time you request. All the barbers are great. I would not recommend the owner "Lorenzo" solely due to me getting a hair cut and it was really a half ass hair cut. But the rest of the guys are great barbers. I personally get cuts from "Guero" "Chano" "Tim" "Joey". "Tommy" gives out good hair cuts I personally never gotten one from him but he's good. I just would stay away from Lorenzo, it's nothing personally I just think the other guys are better options. Also I wouldn't buy hair product here, it's a bit overpriced but if you need it for an emergency they have very good hair products. "suavecito" , "Hair Evolution" etc.. Over all a good shop if you book an appointment otherwise if you walk in you can wait for 10 minutes up to 1 hour and a half. No joke. read more

This place sucks, the owner is rude and treats his customers poorly. At one time I frequented this shop, as it was close to my home and seemed like a chill atmosphere. However, I was quite wrong. I walked in on a weekday morning and oddly the place was pretty crowded. I asked if I could put my name in for a cut and was told it would be like a two hour wait. While most people would be deterred by this news and go elsewhere, I figured I could make some work calls outside, pass some time and chill for a bit. Rather than being rude and making my calls in the shop; for all to hear, I walked outside and proceeded to speak with some clients for roughly the next hour and a half. I then figured, hey I only have a few more minutes so I walked a few doors down and bought a drink from a small restaurant and went back to the shop. I sat there for roughly another 20 minutes and when it was my turn the owner looked over and said NO, he has not been waiting, do not take him. And then proceeded to tell me I had to wait another two hours... I looked at him and said, man I have been here, just chilling outside, trying to be polite and accomodating to those around me, and it was like this news was falling on deaf ears. He didnt care about what I had to say, and ultimately; I realize he doesnt care about his customers. To anyone reading this, if you look at this shops yelp rating, just know this has to be friends and customers he is asking to post positive reviews, as this place is awful, the owner is rude and often fights with his customers. Ultimately, I really dont care to be scolded by a guy with a fifth grade education. His hair cuts are nothing special, barbers are pretty dime a dozen. Truly I could throw a rock with my eyes closed and accidentally hit 10 barbers with a better disposition, and who give a better cut. Redacted Section. He's been cutting my 4yr old sons hair for about a year. Let's just say my son isn't the easiest but Tim has patients and gets the job done! When my son would come back from his dads with a butchered home haircut, I call Tim for a 911 cut. Tim always fit us in and worked his magic. Walk-ins are not accommodated irrespective what they say. These guy all typically only work through appointments which are hard to schedule. Each barber have their own clients so even if available they don't take the next available appointment. Went once and was frustrated of the wait and they said to feel free to go somewhere else...so I did. I'll never again go to this shop. read more

This place is awful. Literally just sat in there for 45 minutes waiting my turn. When my turn comes up, the next available barber tells me I need an appointment and they stop taking walk-ins at 2p bc they close at 3p. I got in at 2:03p bro! And no one said a single word to me for over 45 minutes about me needing an appointment!!!! The barber that left at 2:15p told me "someone will be right with you". So what am I supposed to think? I get it, you guys want to get out of there and get home to your family. But there wasn't even any attempt to offer me a makegood or try to squeeze me in. Especially given the fact that every single person in the shop saw me sitting there for 45 minutes and no one said anything about an appointment. Every shop around here closes at 3p, so now I'm stuck here trying to beg a barber shop to take me and writing this stupid review. If you are looking for a salon maybe get your bikini wax touched up or have some highlights put in your hair this is NOT your spot. But if you are looking for a haircut done in a NORMAL amount of time, some sports on TV, good conversation about everything from Ronda Rousey vs Money Mayweather to my halos getting swept by the Dodgers (with a respectable amount of ribbing), while having your haircut by an owner or employees who actually cares about what is said about them on YELP and wants to make it better then you have found a home. Kendal has been coming here ever since we moved back to California. As an ex barber he's super picky about his hair. He tried out a few places before finally finding this one. I am glad he did because he is looking hot!!! I love the way his fade looks after visiting this place. Ever since we were in the Navy he has kept the same fade and surprisingly it looks much better now. As a wife I am pretty happy w. The way his hair looks everytime. Recently I came to sit in while he was in the chair. (I know, wives aren't supposed to be in the shop, but it beats waiting in the car) The place was really nice and clean! They had some movies going on which is always nice while you wait, and they even had a few game consoles which I'm sure come in handy during the busy days. And all of the barbers seemed really cool! They didn't mind me being there. Overall it seems like a happy place! They were joking around with eachother and just having a good ol time! They even took a family of guys right before closing. That's great customer service! Five stars based on the quality of haircut for the past year, customer service, and cleanliness. Some of these reviews are so dang salty, and they come from men!!!!
