I was even able to get a haircut in their Salon before I left. the only negative is it was impossible to connect on the phone to try to get a room reserved, way understaffed there but that is the only place that was an issue. Finally, my son went to the facility and was able to meet with them and reserve a room. I would go back in a heartbeat if I had the need.

This lady was grumpy and it looked like she already put on her overtime. Maybe she did! But that was strike 1. The ladies in my team (1st meeting with them all) were cordial and polite, so nothing much to write about them, but I did met a new friend, or should I say an old friend . . . . so I have someone to sit & converse with. Here comes the manager of the food & beverage department, serving us. She smiled, when talking with us, but she wasn't smiling when she walked away. I don't expect someone to smile all day, like 100%, I don't. . . but the kind of reaction I was reading was . . . . her staff aren't there because of cut-backs. That kind of smile, so she's putting more hours. Probably another reason why the reception was 'grumpy? The manager, did gave me the drink I asked for, so that's a bonus. Now comes the food. There are many selections there to choose from. The oil & vinegar dressing was very, very thick. What makes oil & vinegar thick? Beats me! Cornstarch? Flour? Glue? LOL If I wanted thick dressing on my salad, I would have chosen Ranch or Thousand Island, maybe Blue Cheese? I was hungry, so I have no choice but eat all that I picked, plus a small slice of chocolate cake. Yum! One lady had very little on her plate, my rooster could eat that, and she's got good control if she was trying to lose weight. Or it was just not appealing to her. But why would anyone pay $9 for a buffet, if you're gonna eat like a rooster. My new friend tried their soup, she said it was VERY hot, but good. OK, now it's raining so hard. So I stayed a bit longer, but eventually I have to walk out back where I parked my car, but I don't like getting wet, not even for a spit. I asked the lady @ the front desk, if there was a back exit, and again, she was grumpy @ me, no smile, and the tone of her voice just shows she's now getting mad @ me. I also met up with the food & beverage manager, again . . . . and she pointed me where the bathroom was, but still no smile, like she had a lot in her mind. Was her job hanging by a thread, and overworked like all the rest of us? What ever the reasons, THEIR EMPLOYEES just doesn't have the hospitality one gets when they walk inside a room. UPDATE: I did an event here, and I can tell you how the people who lives here behaved, including their employees. SOMEONE must have read my 1st paragraph, because they now have a very friendly GREETER working behind the reception desk! Thanks for that! They are like a large family, they are helpful, friendly, and they have many people who are residents volunteer - getting more involved than other retirement facilities I've visited. They have activities to get them more involved, and as volunteers, you are part the 'community'. It's not like, you go out to have a meal, then go back to your room. Their gift shop are run by volunteers. Because of my observations, I will add another star!

I was one of the early residents of their villas, and they were initially a great improvement to the facility. I felt the facility fully deserved a five-star rating. However while the staff is still outstanding, the quality of services has degraded. It seems that they added over fifty villas to the facility but failed to increase the kitchen size, the transportation support, and likely some of the staffing needs to maintain the high standards of three years ago.

One of the things we hear often is when you walk in the door, you feel the energy, people are out and about and saying hello as you pass by in the halls is just a normal part of our lives here. I love connecting with new residents and listening for opportunities on how they can get involved in the community. I love the work I do and am proud to work where integrity is at the forefront of our daily lives. It is a great place to work and a great place for people to live.

We were interested initially due to the social media posts about it being an active community, which was a huge selling point for us. We ultimately did not choose to move our grandmother here due to lack of communication. They would request something, and then go silent for weeks at a time. Fast forward, and I'm now a nursing student looking for part time work. Arcadia came up and I decided to apply, heard back immediately and scheduled an interview. I'll keep my experience short but my "interview" or lack there of with Austin Black was something I have never experienced in my decade in healthcare. It will make a good dinner conversation for years to come. Overall, a sloppy facility plagued with poor communication, inconsistent follow-through and seemingly incompetent leadership.

My mom didn't want to go to a nursing home, or anywhere away from home. In her home, she can do all…read moreher hobbies, eat all her favorite Filipino foods, prepared by her or us, plus she paid for it and wants to die there like my dad did. She knew, that she will get stronger and she will be back on her feet, as soon as she starts her radiation. With that said, I end up talking her into moving to Park Forest, one, because it's close from my home, I can easily walk there & visit her. I told her I will even do volunteer work, so I have an excuse for visiting her there often. She went for it! That's right, she was ready to be among women her own age! On the day she moved in, I was unpacking some of her necessities, when she rang up the nurse. She pressed the button, like 10x, but no nurse came to see her. I also found out, that SHE WILL HAVE to walk to the bathroom, without her walker, and that there is no guard rail on her bed. Meaning, they didn't care if she fell, or tripped, my mom is DYEING of cancer and there is NO WAY IN HELL was she walking alone in the bathroom, without an assistance! To me, that was a torture! I found out, the buzzer had a hole so the reason why the nurse didn't hear her. What if she tried the buzzer and I wasn't there, and she's having an emergency? Right away, I decided, this was NOT a place for her. The lady who was in the same room as mom (roommate) her first warning to us was: "good luck, getting help around here!" I didn't know @ that time, what she meant. But she was giving us a good warning. I feel sorry for relatives, leaving their 'love ones' in a place such as this! I got a confirmation from her doctor, and took mom home with me, that same evening. That was a good move, on my part, because I had the last 3 months with my mother, and took care of her and had a chance to be a 'mother' to her and her the 'daughter'.

I was humbled to see some fabulous patient care for many of the residents at this modest facility, with day in and day out consistency. It resides in a quiet residential area off of the hustle-bustle of 82nd, yet close enough still to be a short walk for lunch/break options (7-11, and the Indian/curry hut right next door). She's been very happy there and loves all the staff who seem so kind and loving. Our favorite is Mercedes and her daughter Lana. I also want to note that their meals are not expensive. Some people prefer quantity over quality. Your safest bets are the salads, avocado toast, soups, and fruit bowls. Part of my frustration with Cherrywood is that its a retirement home and the residents don't have a choice where to eat most days. At least this is true for those who can't easily travel. So the meals should be appetizing and inviting. There is a culinary director but somehow he claims to not be involved in culinary matters. I want that job. However, one would think the culinary director would offer to forward your concerns. This doesn't happen. The culinary director is NOT the chef. The chef and his staff try really hard. You usually won't find the culinary director. I don't see him helping when there is a rush, he has never greeted me or seated us where there is a line, and I assume he is usually in his office. One does see him on the family events. So he isn't totally invisible. Sounds like Cherrywood needs a culinary director who is responsible for improving the dining experience in their restaurant willing to greet guests. As stated before, Cherrywood caters to 7th Day Adventists and they are vegetarian. Their vegetarian selections are hopefully getting better. They were not really good before. The worst meal I had there was at the last Thanksgiving. That veggie meal included two slices of fake turkey. Think bologna or spam for Thanksgiving. As a comparison one of their competitors offers a nice salmon dinner every day as an option. Cherrywood offers this maybe once a week. Just saying other retirement homes offer better food services. I hope things get better.

Highgate is a smaller facility that is much more intimate. They have a bulletin board with about a dozen pictures of staff that have been there for at least 10 years. When we ate a meal in their dining room I noticed (1) their tables are widely spaced for walkers and (2) some of the administrative staff actually serve the tables. They are all very intimate with the residents. The food is great by the way. We were fortunate to tour just as they had an opening in assisted living. However, after 10 days they called us in for a conference. There had been an incident and they recognized that he was in an early stage of dementia. We were afraid they might say he "wasn't a good fit" for the place. We said that in the meeting and all three staffers immediately reacted for us to be assured, that this is what they are equipped to handle. They have people who are trained in dealing with dementia and have a program for helping keep the minds active which can otherwise lead to pent up frustration. We realize we were too close to see the subtle changes but when they explained how all the little signs added up, it really explained a lot. When something like this hits a family member you are in denial, you don't see it happening. We didn't. They started him in the program and shortly had an opening in memory care where they get the same great food. These people really care and evaluated his behavior. Another place just told us that he was "misbehaving". Highgate is much much better. We're very glad to have found them.
