I ended up purchasing a new plant for a specific spot in my house. The staff were extremely kind and engaging and willing to answer any and all plant related questions I had. We had an unfortunate and disappointing experience with Public Land Store, and want to share our experience so others can make well-informed decisions about whether to shop there. Last month, we purchased a $260 Dracaena Rikki after specifically asking a staff member whether the plant was safe for cats, which was one of our key criteria for the purchase. The staff member assured us it was non-toxic. We later discovered this information was incorrect, as the plant is indeed toxic to cats. Upon learning this, we promptly returned the plant in perfect condition, expecting the store to take responsibility for the misinformation and to accept a return. To our surprise, we were informed of a strict no-return policy when we attempted to return the plant, which we had neither seen posted nor been told about during our lengthy conversation with staff prior to our purchase. At the store's suggestion, we reached out to the owners via email to address the situation. Unfortunately, their response reiterated the no-return policy, declined any return or exchange, and cast doubt on our account of the conversation since they were not personally present, suggesting that we were lying. We also told the owners about the personal significance of the purchase--it was intended to commemorate a recent loss--and they did not even acknowledge this fact in their reply. While we fully understand the necessity of return policies, we believe a specialty plant store, where staff recommendations play a critical role in customer decisions, should stand behind the accuracy of the information provided by their team. At the very least, staff members should (1) clarify if they are uncertain about their answers and encourage customers to verify information independently before purchasing, and (2) tell customers there is a strict no return policy, or direct customer attention to a no returns sign that is allegedly posted near the register (which we unfortunately did not see or know about). We certainly understand that mistakes and misinformation can happen, and that alone would never affect our choice to shop somewhere. But how mistakes are dealt with matters--here, we encountered inflexibility, dismissiveness, a lack of empathy, and even had our integrity questioned. The owners suggested we were irresponsible for relying on their staff's information, even though the staff member in question presented themselves as highly knowledgeable about houseplants. We urge shoppers to be cautious when relying on staff guidance at Public Land, particularly regarding anything important like toxicity. We are neighbors of the store and used to love visiting it, but they have lost our business. read more

They've also got a solid collection of house plants for prices that won't break the bank. However you should beware, not all of their plants are for sale (string of coins, I've been eyeing you). The entire store is so photogenic, and they have fun knick knacks and ceramics, and a small art gallery. Having passed by Public Land Store multiple times in the past and never realizing what an awesome place it is, I felt compelled to share my experience here to encourage others to stop by. My boyfriend and I spent a leisurely weekend visiting local plant shops and found Public Land as a highly rated spot downtown. We both remarked that we never realized plants were sold here! Street parking was available when we arrived, and instantly I was drawn in by the gorgeous display of plants all along their giant windows. We received a warm welcome as we walked in, and were told that we could ask any questions we may have and look around at our leisure. I loved how open and airy the space was and couldn't help but feel so relaxed and happy. All the plants were tagged with pricing and names and there were pots alongside the right wall. The room in the back had local art displayed, where you can peruse and admire all of the brilliant work. We ended up walking out with an alocasia polly and will be sure to visit again for more good vibes and plant finds! What a gem of a place in our very own backyard. read more

A gem of a shop here in Elk Grove. They have a consistently diverse and extensive inventory, the prices are fair, and the retail space is well kept and full of light and tasteful decoration. Most importantly, the owners and staff are friendly and knowledgeable- aside from actually being able to give accurate care instructions, they're honest and accurate when it comes to matching a customer with a plant or cactus that actually matches their ability to care for it. I think the one thing that nurseries and plant stores hear the most is about how someone has difficulty keeping plants alive, and the people at Public Land seem to really care about not only assessing their clientele's abilities, but also the environment the plant will be in (medium sun, full sun, etc.) to make sure they're getting the best match possible. I've gone in a number of times now, and I always come back with a plant that I grow to love and that fits my living space. They also have some excellent art shows, and in non-Covid times, the show openings are a lot of fun. Looking forward to going to another one once we're back to normal times. read more

This was a pretty cool looking place from the outside myself and my partner went inside and the cashier was helping someone so we felt it ok at the time that she didn't greet us 5mins went by she was still helping them and nothing from the cashier the store is small a one room place so she had eyes on us the entire time. A 3rd couple walking in the door while the cashier was still helping the original guest but this couple who happen to be white she greeted instantly before the door even fully opened. I noticed this and walked out on the spot and ad we walked out the cashier still helping the original guest is was able to say to us thank you as we walked out. I get so sick of the stores in Sacramento treated black folks poorly in there little stores as if we are in the 50's again. Very sad experience I had planned on buying a cool cactus. The lady that helped me was very knowledgeable and helped me pick out the perfect low light plant for my office. I came into Public Land Store just roughly about once they hit their 2 month mark. I was greeted by one of the shop owners, Mel. She had a great/friendly personality. Then, I met the other shop owner: Austin. He too is very friendly and has an abundant amount of product knowledge. Austin & Mel have created a terrific interior as well that really compliment their products in their store. As an interior designer (soon to be), I strongly believe that this store is perfectly executed and the quality is definitely there! In terms of experience, once you come into this particular cactus store, you're very overwhelmed. In a exciting and positive way, that is. You'll see a variety of different species of cacti that you cannot find on your own. You won't find these types just in any home depot, walmart, etc. Every single one has such strong and unique features about them. Additionally, they also have other home goods, such as: high-quality patterned blankets, a variety of pots, VERY GOOD incense, ceramic goods, and many more. As you can tell, I am very enthusiastic about this review. I've actually never made a review on a store but you have to when you've finally found your favorite store where you're an ACTUAL REGULAR. If you're trying to get into plants, I highly suggest starting with a cactus here. It's a quality store with quality products and of course quality customer service. Which is the reason my boyfriend and I keep coming back and refuse to buy from any other cactus/plant stores other than the Public Land Store. Saw this place by accident and wanted to see what they had. When we first walked in we were greeted which was nice and so we were browsing. I believe it as the owner that was there, he kept talking to another costumer which was fine. I ended up picked up a couple of items and went to the register. The guy kept on talking to the same person. I waited. He kept talking and I over heard him talking about play dates and what not. Im still waiting. No acknowledgement of "hey give me a minute." Or "I'll be there soon". Kept talking. It was a good 10 minutes. I literally wanted to leave it and walk out. As he finished his conversation he didn't say anything just rung me up. And that's it. Great selection of south-west inspired home goods. Amazing selection of cactus and succulents. For someone who dates someone who grows them, I'm impressed. The pots are nice, standard terra-cotta, but there is also some very nice pottery. They also have a very nice selection of other southwest inspired goods like pillow and blankets. I love that style of blankets. They are just absolutely beautiful. The Saturday I visited they were having an art opening that night. So stop by for a visit. I will be back for sure. I snagged a hoya pubicalyx, dracaena white bird, and a mini variety pack of soaps that smelled so good. The owner is very nice, offered lots of care tips for each plant. Recently visited Sacramento and stumbled on this gem at the suggestion of another business in town. They have hands down the most diverse collection of cactus I've ever seen and the entire space as a whole is incredibly tasteful. There is an art gallery in back and they have all sorts of plant pots, ceramics, housewares, cool art and my personal favorite the shop dog Yuca.
