To those that closely follow the revitalization of the Historic R Street Corridor that took place in the mid-2010s, "WAL Public Market" played a major role in renovating an old historic building and bringing it back to life. Located at this historic Lawrence Warehouse (built way back in the 1910's) and directly on R St. and tucked in between 11th & 12th Sts, WAL which is an acronym of "Warehouse Artist Lofts" became the focal point as this indoor area accommodates and operates various businesses year-round. Here, you will find a broad collection of small independently owned businesses that include "Fish Face Poke Bar", "MediumRare Records & Collectibles", "Shop Old Gold" (clothing), "bsR brand" (designer clothing), "Kechmara Designs" (Moroccan rugs), "Roderick Cooney Photography", and "Warehouse Artist Lofts" which showcase creative artist spaces for people that wish to live and be a part of this community experience. Additionally, there are several other small businesses that offer food & drink options which makes it an excellent one-stop shop. I will say that public access is readily available as normal business hours run from 8am-9pm Monday through Saturday and 11am-9pm on Sunday. Parking is surprisingly not too bad as I've been fairly lucky in the 10+ various times visiting here. However, it does get quite busy during the morning and lunch rush so keep that in mind. I also wanted to add that there are public restrooms (which require a code) but any WAL employee will be happy to provide that code to you. All in all, "WAL Public Market" is a truly unique, innovative, and rewarding experience. Whether you wish to indulge in an espresso drink, a poke bowl, a vinyl record, a vintage shirt, this place offers things that you can't find elsewhere. The philosophy of the WALPublic Market is To Eat Drink & Shop, which happens to be printed on the banners affixed to the lampposts outside the main entrance. At WAL Public Market there is an art gallery with two and three dimensional art hanging on the walls along the main corridor. The art exhibits are curated by local artisans and most pieces can be purchased. I was delighted to see that WAL Pubic market is back with most retail spaces up and running. There is a food court in the front directly to the right of the main entrance. And just past the food court is a sweet vintage clothing store called Old Gold. I found this spot when I was visiting Sacramento. At first, it looks like a random building but once you step inside the atmosphere changed. There's some cool shops -- a vinyl records store, a couple clothing stores, and a restaurant. I think there's more to it but when I went the stores were closing. Friends recently invited us to attend this month' "First Friday" at the market and so glad decided to leave the house! Parking was of course "uuuuuugggghhh" but once you get past that, this event was very cute indeed. One of us took the reigns of guiding the rest of us with a map of which artists' lofts were participating and we were able to enter their space(es) and talk with, view the art, get the background stories..... I even met one of the artist' and we might do some collaborative work. Here I thought I'd just be browsing a few items and maybe buy some food.... and it turned into a very nice community gathering. Something about Sacramento that I am discovering as a recent resident (3-5 year span) ..... this "big little town" is very connected. What does that mean? Well.... maybe I'll find, say, a photographer on Instagram. And then they know someone on Yelp, and that person may have attended a local event that I did....and then someone else went to High School with another, and then those people know a florist, or a spa, or a hair stylist...and suddenly, this is what I am discovering, we're all connected even if most of these examples haven't all met in person. It's like finding friends that you're meant to meet even if it's still developing. I found my hair stylist as an example... and that translated to finding my tattoo artist. And then recently, on Instagram, someone else I follow on IG had posted about tattoo specials at the same shop. "Julie, WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE MARKET?" WELL. . . . . Sacramento is a very exciting community, with a small town feel, and if your only takeaway from this review is...... take the time, make the time.... to leave your house....and discover something new! I love this market! Located on the corner of 11th and R, this building reminds me of The Basement in Reno where there are small independent shops in one location. At WAL (Warehouse Artist Lofts), you can shop for vintage and new clothing from Old Gold, records and collectibles from Medium Rare Records and Kicksville Vinyl and Vintage, grab some delicious poke from Fish Face, and sip of an amazing cup of coffee from Camillia Coffee Roasters. read more

Disappointing...thought it would be bigger with lots of options (after having looked at pictures online) but it was a lot smaller in person. If you love to go thrifting, there is a cute thrift shop that has a wide array of vintage pieces (tops, bottoms, sets, dresses, accessories, etc), as well as a record shop right across! I did appreciate how each of the shops provided masks and hand sanitizer (some of them even offered latex gloves) for COVID-19 safety purposes. read more

Shopping & Perusing Amidst A Mixed Use/Income Art Community In Historic R Street District. SITREP While having coffee at Southside Insight Coffee, my buddy Bambi & I ran into our friend Tim and he was filling us in on his happenings: he is now at Kicksville Vinyl & Vintage inside WAL (Warehouse Artist Lofts) - this is a community of 116 rental units (the "Lofts" part of this equation) with ground floor commercial & retail space (such as Tim's store Kicksville). Bambi & I decided this was worth a gander, and so we took our coffees and headed that way... WAL-SETUP If you're thinking this building looks familiar, that's because it IS the historic Lawrence Warehouse, the main six-story structure on this block that built in 1914 AND is on the National Register of historic buildings, and is one of this downtown hood's iconic structures for more than a century now. MISSION WAL was "founded" to be a haven & living-sanctuary for creative spirits & muses to "Live, Work, Learn & Collaborate with One Another" as it's purpose statement says. To that end, everything about WAL promotes our Sacramento artist community and this is also a space where their artwork is exhibited. I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh and tasty the food was at this restaurant! The pokey of the day was octopus, cilantro, cucumber, kimchi with chili oil. With a side of kimchi and white rice it made for a delicious light meal for two. They serve alcohol, with sake and beer, and I believe there are various restaurants inside of this little public square. We will have to try the other restaurants another time :-) read more

This is such a cool place. They close earlier than the fish face restaurant that is inside this place, so if you are gonna go for some poke, think about coming early enough when WAL is open. There are a ton of cool things in here. A poke place, a juice bar (and a very good one at that), a cobbler, artists' lofts, etc. you can walk around, and go shop to shop, talk to the vendors and the artists, and fall in love with Sacramento all over again. read more

This is exactly what R Street needed. There was always a lot of potential for these pretty but relatively empty blocks, and now people finally have a reason to visit. The WAL (Warehouse Artist Lofts) Public Market is an eclectic collection of shops with enough variety to please any consumer. It includes rental units above. Located in the historic Lawrence Warehouse, which is on the national register of historic buildings, the market has something for everyone. There are food options (which I have yet to try), some clothing stores like Shop Old Gold with some incredible vintage attire, and my personal favorite, Kicksville Vinyl & Vintage. the latter is a pairing of two vinyl dealers along with a furniture dealer in an eclectic little shop near the back end. There are also art galleries and regularly changing artist displays. I love how some of the shops also utilize the main hallway to show off their goods. A very community feel, indeed. The only negative is that WAL's newness has attracted large crowds, especially at lunch time, meaning you'll have trouble eating or just getting in the door to the shops in the rear if you come at that time of day. I anticipate the fervor will subside in the coming months and this will end up being a pleasant place for midday lunch and shopping. read more

Stopped by a nearby restaurant for lunch, and figured I'd check this place out. Looking online, definitely seemed to have some potential, and looked interesting. Upon entering the building, by Fish Face restaurant (which is really just a space open to everything else), I was accosted by a strong, pungent, highly unpleasant smell. At first, I thought it might be raw sewage--did they have a bathroom/plumbing problem in the building? Then, it definitely appeared that the smell was coming from the restaurant itself. I really can't describe the stench in writing to convey how truly awful it was. I, quite literally, threw up in my mouth a little. I figured I'd try to power past the stank and that restaurant space, and see what else the building had. Saw a cute little record store, and figured I'd take a look. Except that this plan was foiled as the stench/stank/nastiness in the air permeated THE ENTIRE BUILDING. There was no escape from it while inside. So, I held my breath, and beat a hasty retreat back past the restaurant. There's no options for zero stars...in my mind, that one star I'm forced to give is for the glorious deep breath of fresh (albeit 105 degrees outside) air I got once I left. It's really a shame, that record store is damn cute. read more

They have a various stores located in here ~~ nice and simple exterior design. However they should get more seating a since there's lots of dining options. I love this place and will return. I only tried their Poke Fish Face Bar and Metro Kitchen so I didn't explore much but it looks like a fun place to visit if you're in the area! read more

Fun environment. Most of the shops are fairly pricy, but they have a bar and another eatery inside. The record store especially kept my attention for a while. Lots of great oldies and obscure picks that you will be pleased just to find. read more

I love this place! Has a decent options of food and coffee! I love how there are so many boutiques, even though they are a bit pricey, it is still nice to look at all the unique things they offer. The parking is decent I wish they had more parking but if you go at the right time there is plenty:) Overall i like this place i go here at least once a week! read more

Such a cute little area. I don't usually come out here but I'm glad I stumbled on this place last night. We went in just cause we were curious and were surprised. There is 2 places to eat. Extremely disappointed by the way this gallery acted towards the collective of artists, fa4collective, leaving them hanging with a cancelled show two days prior to their opening. At a time when we need more support for arts, don't go and screw them like that specially after making an agreement. it shows a lack of integrity from the part of the establishment, or were they afraid of the content? read more
