44% PRICE INCREASE ONLY 4 1/2 MONTHS AFTER MOVE-IN. OPPORTUNISTIC, UNETHICAL, BAIT-AND-SWITCH PRICING. On its website, Public Storage publishes a paragraph that's titled "Our Values". Notably, in that entire paragraph, the word "customer" doesn't appear once. The PS decision to not address its customers even once in its values statement doesn't appear to be an oversight - because, in my experience, customer relations (and honest marketing) simply don't appear to be of any concern to PS. Indeed, shortly after I moved into PS, it opportunistically increased my monthly rental rate by an exorbitant amount - because PS assumed that I'd pay a large price increase to avoid having to bear the time consuming, expensive, and burdensome tasks of moving again. In late January, I rented a unit for $230/month, which wasn't a promotional rate. Last week PS sent me a notice that, effective June 1, which is less than 4 1/2 months after I moved in, it would increase my monthly rate by $100 to $330 - which is a 44% increase. Out of principle, before the price increase could take effect, I moved out. Paying for a storage unit isn't like paying for a gym membership or Netflix subscription, which doesn't create any "transition" or "transaction" costs when they're terminated. But when a storage lease is terminated, you must then bear the time consuming, expensive, and burdensome tasks of finding another storage property and then hiring movers to move you out of one property and into another. For these reasons, it should be illegal for PS to take advantage of customers by substantially increasing rent so soon after they move in - unless PS conspicuously and with specificity discloses and quantifies that risk and the potential price increases up front. I reported PS to the Texas Attorney General because I believe that this kind of bait-and-switch pricing is a deceptive trade practice and is therefore illegal. Last year, I also reported Extra Space Storage to the Texas Attorney General - because last year ESS increased my rent by 100% only five months after move-in (from $71 to $142). While the Texas AG never contacted me and doesn't appear to care about such issues, several months ago New York state took an action against ESS that validates my complaints - when it sued ESS for the same bait-and-switch pricing tactics that PS used with me in Austin. read more

Horrible customer service. Do not use them. The day we were supposed to move in they had a system wide outage with phones and computers! No one was at location so we had no options but to switch to Extra Space Storage (who gave us unbelievable customer service by the way). But Public Storage is still charging us despite not being available and dropping the ball completely. Multiple calls and complaints and they are threatening to take it to collections because we challenged the charges with the credit card company. So bad! Would definitely recommend you store your stuff with someone else. read more

The staff is rarely available to answer questions in the office or over the phone. The location is never able to open the door with the app, it's not clean, the carts are overdue to be replaced. Public Storage has poor manager & does not maintain the property. It's unsafe. I just moved out of Austin Tx / 5th Street location. The reason no was several fold: 1) when I came in last week with a crew of hired movers, the elevator was broken... Aaron, @ that location told me he had no idea how soon it would be fixed; 2) when I had gone up to the unit I was as confused and thought my door was slightly open ( you couldn't tell that the lock wasn't really in the slot) as I started to pull it up, someone in the dark inside slammed it down & told me to mind my own business.Manger on Duty said they had known about but couldn't catch him... I said he's up there now. Manager went and looked said he found nothing. After manager left I saw him crawl out of unit A410. I told Manager in duty & took a photo as he walked away. Defiantly a scarey situation; 3) I called later in the week n Saturday and Manager told me to hurry up & get over there because the elevator was "working @ that moment". He said he wasn't sure how long it would be running. I left that day & got the same size unit for 1/2 the price - including insurance @ EXTRA STORAGE next door... very cheap - well maintained - great staff... read more

Awful experience. My unit was broken into earlier this year and I had irreplaceable items stolen. When I went to report it the manager on duty had heard someone in my unit with the damaged door closed (see pic). Manager said she notified the thief in my unit that they would have to pay for the damage to the door but didn't think that maybe someone was breaking in?!? Manager said they knew what time the break-in occurred so maybe there was security footage. When I went back the next week to ask about the footage she said she had been "too busy to review it" but that maybe the police would come and investigate it (never heard from them either). Public Storage never reached out to apologize after the break-in but I did get a postcard notifying me of yet another rent increase which was now reaching double the rate of when I moved in. When I moved out they charged me for an additional month and when I called about it they said there was still a lock on my unit (it wasn't mine as I removed mine when I moved out). I have called and left messages about getting a refund and haven't heard back. The bottom line about this place is they don't care about you or your personal stuff, just their income stream. read more

For the past several months, there is one dollie for the several hundred storage units - and there is a crack in it. I've contacted management at least twice. Now there is a Trader Joe's shopping cart in addition to the single dollie. Very frustrating to try and move things in and out without a dollie. What a waste of $271 a month. We moved to Singapore 4 years ago and chose this place to store our family possessions that we couldn't take with us. Among these things were things like pictures, writings and poems, the ashes of our pets, sports memorabilia and our wedding album - items that are non-replaceable. This week my wife returned to Texas and went to our storage to remove a few things. She found a new lock on the unit. She had the lock removed to find that our storage unit had been burglarized. Almost everything had been removed - including the non-replaceables. We have paid $250 a month for 4 years to have our lives wrecked and our possessions end up in pawn shops and trash cans. The insurance company denied any claim (maximum value is $3000 in case you are interested) because this was not considered "forced entry." Cutting off our lock, stealing our stuff and then replacing our lock doesn't qualify as "forced." Destroying the memories of our lives is no big deal... Security is pretty much non-existent - there is no video inside the building. There are no patrols or checks. The police say this is a common tactic for employees to steal from the customers. This company doesn't care about its customers, their possessions or their lives. I would avoid any dealings with them. If you need to store your things look elsewhere, somewhere that takes security and their customers seriously. read more

I rented a 10' x 15' storage unit about 10 months ago for $298/month. That was a bit more than a lot of other area storage units, but the location was convenient so I went for it. I just noticed that my monthly rent was increased to $357, this is a 19.8% increase! And they did it with no notice. I just happened to catch it on my monthly invoice that the cost has gone up. The person who runs the storage facility said she would contact somebody and get back to me in 2 days. After a week of nobody getting back to me, I called her back. She said that she checked with the district manager who said that I am not eligible for a change in rate. But then she said she has another 10' x 15' available at $213/month, and I'd have to move to get the lower rate. Say what now? Not only do you have the exact same unit for far less than I originally rented my current unit for, it's drastically less than what you just stuck me up for in my recent increase! Do you guys see what I'm talking about? This is a stick-up job! They put a gun in my face and raised my cost 20% knowing that I'm not going to go in and do all of the labor that it would take me to move the unit just to get the lower rate. They have me over a barrel, and they know it. They are *&#$(@)@!#ing me just because they can! Then I called the corporate office and I talked to a zombie who read off of a script, and simply said that rents for storage units fluctuate, and that it is a month-to-month contract, and they don't hold me to anything. Of course you don't, you know I can't go move my stuff! I'm not gonna break my back and move a 10' x 15' unit into another one to save the money. It's not worth it. I was very polite with her but told her that I was going to light her company up all over the Internet. She did not seem to care. So here I go, in an attempt to save you the hassle. I know that costs can fluctuate, and I know that month-to-month means things can change, but a sudden 20% increase with no notice, when they have the exact same unit for far less than they are sticking me up for, is an outrage by any definition. If you want to get taken advantage of and have your costs jacked up unexpectedly, please use Public Storage. Otherwise, go somewhere else where they'll hopefully be more fair. read more

I have had to jump through hoops getting a payment submitted since losing my initial card. The only way to update a card on file is to go in person to the office. Don't be late for even one day, $30.00 late fee. If you try to phone customer service, forget it unless you're a brand new customer. You'll get lost in the automated system. read more

This was about as easy and convenient as it gets. I had some water damage in part of my house, and needed a place to put stuff until repairs were done. The staff is great, made it easy. It's clean, well maintained, and I was pretty confident that my stuff was safe. For short term, this is a great solution with very very nice people running it. The reason for 4 over 5 starts has to do with costs. Over the longer term the increases in rent were bigger than expected. Over two years (repairs took a long time and then I got lazy), the rent was increase 50% ish. That's a lot. Don't put your oriental rugs in this storage. My rugs are destroyed by moths. Another person last Saturday had the same experience. The current manager is ineffective in all regards. When I showed him one of the rugs, he just stared at me and then said he told his manager about the moth eaten rugs from the other person and told me that his manager said if it happens again maybe they can do something about it. He just stood there and stared at me. He doesn't have basic manners to say "I'm so sorry" when told about the rugs. Also, the access system has been broken for at least one week and is not still operating. Door are wide open. So much for climate control. Several of us arrived at 7AM to access our storage and there was a sign advising us that the manager would show up at 9:30. Not so much as an email advising us about the lack of access. When I asked the manager why he didn't send out an email notice or show up early to open the doors, he told me it was his responsibility. He was just the manager. No "I'm sorry for the inconvenience". Failure is an option for this "manager" as well as his "manager". My advice is get them trained or get them out. This is a flaw business operation. read more
