Pros: *salsa bar has a great variety and tastes fresh *large menu selection *restaurant and restrooms were clean *seating and food were fast *average casual dining prices Cons: * food was overall bland *the only thing that had flavor besides the salsa was the white cheese sauce(queso) which had a very weird almost candle like taste....that's the only way to describe it * their taco salad bowls taste generic and store bought *sodas barely have flavoring it's mostly carbonated water *server seemed to rush us, he brought us our 1st refill in a to-go cup without being asked and dropped the check right away Overall: we were very disappointed. I hate giving bad reviews when I feel like places really mean well, but I feel like I wasted time and money here and was really let down. Will not be going back. First of all, the people working there aren't very friendly and I felt uncomfortable because they kept looking at us and laughing. Our waiter was friendly enough, but we barely Secondly, the salsa bar is nowhere near as good as El Patio's. Third, the food is meh. I got a quesadilla that had shrimp, chicken, and steak in it. It wasn't bad, but I think La Carreta has the best quesadillas. I don't know that I'd eat here again. Edit: I'm removing all the stars that I possibly can. Someone here took it upon themselves to add an extra tip for themselves and refused to do anything about it when my friend went there to get his $5 back that they STOLE! UPDATE: After visiting many more times, I can say the food and drinks are consistently delicious. The grilled chicken quesadilla is overflowing with perfectly seasoned meat and very filling. I typically split it with my boyfriend along with cheese dip. We sit at the bar and the manager is always very helpful and quick with service. From the consistency of quality and service, I'm updating and adding a star. This is the best Mexican you will find around here by far. read more

This was was "legit delish" according to my kids. Really nice Mexican place. My $5 margarita had fresh blueberries in it!! The kids has chicken tenders and I had steak fajitas. Loved the salsa bar and the chips and bean dip. The entrées are very large and very appealing to the eyes but they are not as good as they look. Our chicken was very dry and the rice was also dry with no real flavor. The kids drinks aren't included with their $5 meal, so you're paying 2.75 for a kids drink that most likely will be wasted. I would really like to give 4.5 stars. This place was a stop on our way back home. The salsa bar was a nice touch. The beans we were told by our server Arturo were Peruvian. Our first time to Puerto Nuevo. We ordered the combination plate #2 & 3. $10 each. Food was delicious. With your chips you are given a bean dip with cheese then you can go select salsas at the salsa bar which we thought was great. Also we ordered 2 jumbo margaritas with top shelf " Camarera tequila" they were delicious except a little pricey for the drinks, that's the only reason I am giving it 4 stars. So good. Both Bristol and Abingdon have one and they are both good (Bristol was a smidgen better but it didn't make a huge difference). The bean dip is incredible. They serve it with the chips instead of salsa (there is also a salsa bar but I hate cilantro...not their fault) I am sure the salsa is good too for those who don't have an aversion to the herb. My husband says that the guacamole is some of the best he has ever had. It is the best Mexican restaurant in Abingdon. I haven't tried the seafood but I imagine it is good too. I am so fond of the chicken that I haven't ventured beyond it. Their service is great. The price point is reasonable. There are so many more fancy restaurants in Abingdon with great food but if you are looking for Mexican, this is the place. read more

My wife and I stopped by this somewhat new establishment and got Dinner. The wait staff was courteous and prompt. We order the half pound of shrimp and oysters on the half shell I was skeptical at first seeing all the not so good reviews but the seafood was fresh. We ordered fajitas I got the shrimp, scallops and fish and my wife ordered the shrimp. Portion was aight but the seafood was fresh. This place could be good but not sure they'll make it as is. I read previous reviews and most are spot on. My family went to try this New Mexican place. Three out of the five of us ordered fajitas,( beef, chicken, and seafood) and the consensus was that there was no flavor. I suggest you get some Fiesta brand fajita seasoning. Beef was tough and barely edible. Another point of contention was the dip that was served with the chips...,it was some sort of bean dip which was a mustardy yellow color. It didn't taste horrible because it had no taste. Once again no seasoning. They did have a salsa bar and the variety was nice however they give you tiny cups to put the salsa in and it's almost impossible to dip the chips in them. The menu was large but repeated tHe same menu items repeatedly in different combinations. A staple of a good Mexican restaurant is homemade tortillas. If you add those I'll bet you can serve hot sponges and no one will care! Charro beans were average but lacking spice, cilantro and jalapeños. Hoping this place makes some changes and stays in business. Bristol is growing and needs more diversity in its food choices. read more

My brother and I had lunch at Puerto Nuevo in the old Outback Building on Linden Drive in Bristol, VA today. I am impressed. It was a clean and very pleasant atmosphere. The food was excellent. At first, I thought it was a little pricey until I saw the portions. Wow, now I don't see how they can sell their meals for so little. There was enough food to make each of us 2 meals.
