Been coming here for 15 years. Good margaritas, generous pours of patron..enchiladas in green sauce, tacos pastor, shrimp fajitas,..everything is fresh. The service has always been great. The regular who thought the service was bad probably doesn't tip. Still here 25 years later. Dads retired and it looks like the daughters are carrying on the tradition. If you feel like eating sugar in absolutely everything, this is your place! The food here is not very good. I will admit that being from Southern California, and half Hispanic, I have a high standard for Mexican food, but this really was just off. So, the house salsa is so sweet it is inedible. The salsa tastes like someone dumped a huge bag of sugar in it, so we asked if they had anything spicier. When the spicy salsa came, it was edible and a bit more spicy, but didn't have any flavor to it really. The appetizer we got was stuffed jalapeños(it was requested by our teenager), it was obviously pre-packaged but was the best thing that was served to us. The sauce it came with was sweet, and resembled thousand island dressing but smooth, we didn't eat it really. Our meals were all sweet as well, the refied beans were very sweet(if you don't know, they aren't supposed to be sweet at all...) and the rice's texture was just weird, like it came from a microwave steamer pack, kinda bouncy. Nothing tasted like there were Mexicans cooking. The chimichangas were chicken and sweet, they were kinda okay though. My husband did like the steak that came in the California burrito, the steak itself was good. Overall, for two chimichanga meals, one burrito meal and stuffed jalapeños, with 3 waters was $59.00. We wouldn't go here again. At least nothing was old, it did taste fresh, so even though it didn't taste good, it won't make you sick. read more

So I used to live very close to this restaurant when I was younger and would come here a lot with my family--didn't really think twice about it, it was just a regular spot for us. Years later I just revisited Puerto Vallarta and immediately remember why we used to love it here so much! It's a no frills type of restaurant decor wise but that's really what makes it feel so home-y and almost like a neighborhood dive bar with great Mexican food. You really can't go wrong with getting a pitcher of margaritas and splitting it amongst the table. Just be warned they're pretty strong! The chorizo appetizer comes in some sort of wine sauce and it's soo good with some bread. I got the chicken enchiladas in red sauce and they were great. Perfect amount of melted cheese on top. The rice and refried beans were also on point. This place honestly checks all the boxes for me...good food, a bar, relaxed atmosphere, good service and it's really affordable. read more

Came here with my friend Ramsey for our weekly meet up where we discuss the woes of life and this is a great place for that. This is place is a hidden gem in north bergen. I come here whenever I want good Mexican food that is consistent. Upon entering you are promptly greeted with complimentary fresh tortillas and great salsa. I can tell you with the utmost confidence that there aren't many better ways to be greeted. When I come here I normally get the California burrito and am never disappointed. It actually rivals the cherished burritos in California. I mean I've never been to California but I know they're just being pretentious about the whole ordeal. The rice and beans here are also great and are given as a side with most menu items. The waitresses are friendly and accommodating to gringos like myself. The prices are fair especially for the large portions they give you. So if you're in the mood for Mexican food and dont want to get E.coli from chipotle make your way here its great. read more

This use to be one of my favorite restaurants until slowly their service has been getting worse and worse. We walk in on a Friday at 6 they said no tables so we wait at the bar they don't take our order just give us chips and our drinks. We kept looking for a table and we noticed two opening up and we reminded the waiter that we're waiting for a table hence why they never took our order just drinks. So the second table clears up after the first one which sat another party waiting. So we're thinking we're up next and we were wrong apparently we weren't waiting for a table according to the waiter when we had reminded them before hand that we were waiting for a table. So one of the waitresses argues saying we didn't ask for a table. This restaurant use to be good but time after time theirs always something wrong. If it's not waitress giving us attitude it's them skipping our table if it's not that it's them getting our order wrong. Your better off not going to this place.. I've been going to this place for 8 years and today was the last time I come to this place. It's an on going thing with the way they treat customers that are returning customers. Not my favorite mexican spot. I've gotten their chicken fajitas and I'm not a huge fan. It was a bit bland and just not much seasoning. I've heard their tacos are good so perhaps I would come back and give it a try. But personally if you're coming here for the fajitas its far away from the flavor profile im expecting. So so upset with the owner at Puerto Vallarta in North Bergen. I placed an order every time time my sister or family go there because I truly love the food and today the owner refused to give my sister the chips and salsa because I didn't physically pick it up myself and it's one chip and salsa for customer so today I have to eat my order plain in other words. I happen to live in Englewood and it's a drive away. Not just that I go there all the time why do that to me? When I worked in cliffside park and the sons would deliver to me as I was pregnant for all 4 of my pregnancy as they knew my faithfulness since around 1994! Just 2 weeks ago I went to celebrate my daughter's bday and parents anniversary. I can honestly say that I love the food. Always have since I was a kid. The low stars are because of the lack of pest control. I know that this is common in restaurants but once the roaches start making an appearance in margaritas and on the table, it's time for some change. I highly recommend closing for renovation/ deep cleaning and exterminating. read more

Authentic Mexican food, always fresh and full of flavor. The service however, is terrible. The waitresses are dull, very slow and not attentive what so ever. Came in two minutes past lunch time, and wasn't granted lunch time prices, which is a huge disappointed being that Ive been a regular for years. I come back just for the food, because the cooks REALLY make this place what it is. ...wow... three of my first four reviews are for places that haven't been reviewed before. Does that say something about ME? hmm... so anyways... Puerto Vallarta... two-stars... but keep in mind, that was based on my limited experience with the place. I went there with a friend kinda late Saturday night. ...about 11pm. They close at 12. I know kitchen staffs always hate those people that show up at the last minute.. so we decided just to order something simple. Maracuya margarita for my friend, please! ---damn! That thing was good! --I HAD to taste it. HELLO!? (maracuya = passion fruit) ...and a cold Tecate for me! (they brought my Tecate but NO lime! whuut?) As an app, we ordered the Chicken Nachos Supremos. These were really good. ...but Nachos "SUPREMOS" made it seem like they might be supreme! ...there were probably 12 small chips with chicken and cheese arranged around a bit of guacamole and sour cream on a little bed of lettuce. (These "Nachos Supremos" should've been called "Nachos Los-Tastes-Great...Less-Filling") We also BOTH ordered Sopa de Camarones. ...now, let's back up a minute. We basically ordered TWO items (we already had our drinks): 1- Nachos, and 2-SOUP. ...the waitress turns to leave...comes back 3-minutes later and asks: "ok... you wanted the nachos and two shrimp soups, right?". "right". ok. ..a little later, our two soups come... they smelled great! ...but they were Sopa de Mariscos. Seafood Soup... with clams and squid and stuff... don't get me wrong. I LIKE seafood. I just wanted shrimp. She graciously took the soups back and promptly returned with our shrimp concoctions. (way faster than the first soups. ???) These weren't so great... weren't seasoned well. ...it DID have plenty of shrimp, but they were tough. I think they rushed these out of the kitchen... ...so the experience may have been better if there hadn't been that initial mix-up. I LIIKE mexican food... There are no real complaints regarding the food, but it's not exceptional. The decor is pretty basic. This is not your flashy, upscale type place. The tables and chairs are very basic. Service was just above mediocre. Margaritas are very good. This is a pretty essential attribute of a Mexican Restaurant. We ordered the jalapeno poppers appetizers. They were served with a chipotle dip and were good. They were a bit small though. I ordered the combination platter with a chicken enchilada, chili rellenos, and tostada. The tostada was very good and fresh. It was topped with vegetables and guacamole and really hit the spot. The chicken enchilada was nice. It was not exceptional, but it was good. The chili rellenos was a bit heavy. The entree was served with beans and rice. They were lacking in flavor, but I had plenty of food with the other items. They were not bad, but they did not enhance the meal either. Puerto Vallarta is good. I would come back if I were nearby and hungry, but would not go out of my way. Some months ago I foolishly went as far as a half tank of gas will take you for what I thought was good Mexican food...and was angrily disappointed (see my Pancho's Burritos review). So I come home to find out all along I had a Mexican spot around my way, watching and wondering how I could drive right by and not stop in. Puerto Vallarta is exactly what I needed in Northern New Jersey: an end to the culinary Chernobyl this part of the NYC metro continues to be. Entrees are about $2 more than I'd otherwise expect to pay for good Mexican food. Another strange WTF about the place is after your first complimentary chips and salsa, additional orders are $2. That said, understand this is just an advisory, not a reason to skip the joint altogether. The $2 surcharge for additional chips and salsa is the only suspect thing I can say about Puerto Vallarta. Entree portions and offerings more than justify the "adjusted-for-authenticity" higher prices. I ordered the steak burritos and fajitas. The char-grill flavor typical of Tex-Mex restaurants is nowhere to be found, as this is a Mexican restaurant. Marinated in a thin beefy-salsa hybrid with the signature peppers/onions/tomatoes lineup, the steaks are probably just prepared on a hot skillet and that's mighty fine by me. I don't know what they're doing to the yellow rice and refried bean accompaniments but I think narcotics and the DEA should be notified as I find myself needing their rice and beans more and more....as I write this I'm trying to figure out what I'm gonna do about this new food addiction. Guacamole is a wonderfully bright light green and tastes as good as it looks. Salsa has the right taste and balance of chunky-to-smooth and is never watered down..nice little kick with the cilantro alive and well. I'll side with other posters in saying that parking can be an adventure, as there's meters on the boulevard and tight spaces on the side streets. However, the restaurant has an arrangement with the TD Bank across the street where patrons can park there for free after 8pm. I exercised this option on 3 separate occasions without incident, so keep that in mind if the lack of street parking makes you think twice about giving Puerto Vallarta a shot. This is how a Mexican restaurant on the East Coast should be. This is how restaurants in general should be in the backyard of the most famous skyline in the world. Here's hoping I broke a trend of bad restaurants in Northern New Jersey. Enjoy! read more

Yikes!! Some people really dump this place. I gotta say this is a solid spot. I do agree with another poster that some dishes are slightly expensive, but the servings do warrant the price. We do not usually eat all the food, so we get two meals for the price of one, I'll take it!! We started with the nachos. I was surprised that they kinda looked more like quesadillas than nachos, but i was told some places serve them this way. My girlfriend always gets the enchilladas. They are very cheesey and full of flavor. My friend got the calfornia burrito and said it was spot on. Again, he didn't finish either. Last, I got the mixed plate, a small burrito, enchilada n beef taco. Good food and didn't make an attemp to finish since I had to save room for dessert. We all split a flan. The flan was creamy and not eggy so it was a great ending to a good meal. The parking is crazy and you can no longer park at the TD bank after 5 pm. But it does make for a good night out. They did not charge us additionally for chips n salsa, so maybe this has changed. read more

I've decided to give this place 4 stars after many a visit here. My fiance lovingly calls it "dirty Mexican food" because, let's face it, the place is not fancy like Rosa Mexicano. It's an elbows on the table kind of place. BUT the food is solid and the margaritas are on point. Even better, the service is great - the waitresses are very attentive. The passionfruit margaritas are my favorite and I also really love the guac. And, just to be clear, we have NEVER seen a roach or rodent in this place so the "dirty Mexican food" reference has NOTHING to do with the cleanliness of this place.
