Puerto Viejo is becoming one of our go-to's for delivery. We've ordered form here multiple times and have always enjoyed their food... The stand-outs for us are the empanadas (take your pick), the chicharrones (chicken or pork), the maduros, lechon, and of course the really excellent oxtail stew (one of the best we've had delivered, regardless of food genre). We always have to ask to not provide as much rice, beans, and yuca (how anyone could eat as much as they provide is beyond me), but hey to each his own. This was an amazing experience with some unique dishes. The Michelada was probably the best I've had at any other place. It had a perfect blend of saltiness, fermented/Smokey tomato and kick from the hot sauce. My husband and I got only one for the table since I didn't want to drink that night and I think I drank most of it overall the dishes and the sauces go very well together. I definitely recommend asking for their habanero sauce on the side - it's super flavorful and adds great kick to the dishes that are not that spicy. I especially loved the veggie empanadas with a veggie sauce on the side. Yuca fries and mashed yuca we're amazing. I tried making it a few times and it's hard! Very excited to see this on the menu. This is one of my favorite spots! I've never eaten inside but I've ordered delivery many times. I loveee the chicharrones de pollo from here and the rice is really good. The tostones are also delicious. The star of the show for me is the Dominican hot sauce which I've ordered countless times. It is so good when poured on the yellow rice and chicken but it is super spicy so proceed with caution. I do find the prices to be expensive but I like the food so I still order from time to time when I feel like treating myself. I dined here in person pre-Covid and fell in love with the place right away. The food was great and very affordable. During lockdown, this is one of my go-to's for comfort food. The spicy empanadas are perfectly seasoned - so so good! And the chimi burger - no words - so good! The pescado sandwich is one of my favorites as well. Found Puerto Viego after looking for empanadas in my neighborhood and I am so happy I found this place. If you are not familiar with Dominican dishes than the menu may look a little foreign to you. However, the servers were very good at explaining and giving recommendations. They give you plantain chips with garlic sauce along with their brand of hot sauce. Be careful to leave some space for your dish because THEY TASTE AMAZING! The empanadas succeeded my expectations and they are only $1 during happy hour! For my entree I ordered the Camarones al Ajillo (which is garlic shrimp and yellow rice). I will definitely order that again the next time I come back. Overall Puerto Viego is a hidden gem due to it being around auto shops. The prices aren't bad, the food is delicious and it's perfect for a cute date night. We ordered a lot of food. It was a good thing out server brought out the appetizers first... Muduros with Chimi topping... it was different yet, delicious. Chicken Empanadas were fresh and filled with chicken and the sauce made it even more tasty. We Ordered an avocado salad which was a big portion and we had leftovers. This is a salad with a variety of ingredients and their house dressing was refreshing. The whole Red Snapper was cooked perfectly and came with a small salad and tostones. On a trip to Brooklyn, I decided to try Puerto Viejo. The food is phenomenal Dominican food. The oxtail/maduro empanada was very good as were the arepitas de yuca. The food was fresh and well made however, I had to deduct 2 stars for the service. They are slacking in the service department. Arrived here on a snowy Saturday. Plenty of seating due to the weather. Communal table in the middle, bar area to the right and plenty of tables and chairs throughout the room. We ordered the pollo guisado and the tilapia to share. Both orders came out really fast! I can't complain about the food. They both came with rice and beans. As a Dominican person, it pains me to write a review of a Dominican restaurant that is lukewarm, because our country's food is so delicious and flavorful and usually doesn't lend itself to a 2 star review (I actually want to give 2.5 stars, but that's not possible on Yelp). I've come here on three occasions and have tried different things, trying my hardest to like the restaurant more than I do, but alas some things just can't be forced. There are a few things that this restaurant does right, like the pastel en hoja, shrimp empanada (do not order the chicken empanada... it's not good), and the red beans, but that is not enough to carry a meal out of subpar status. There are just too many things that Puerto Viejo does wrong (and must be fixed) before I can feel comfortable giving a higher rating and recommending this place... I will elaborate below: For starters, PLEASE change up the recipe for your jugo natural (especially the chinola and Tamarindo ones). I love jugo de chinola and jugo de tamarindo, but the juice at Puerto Viejo tastes like chemicals.... there is NO WAY this juice can accurately be labeled as "natural" fruit juice- it's gross. Secondly, the rabo guisado (oxtail dish) needs some serious work. The way Dominicans usually make rabo is "encendio," but the oxtail dish at this restaurant definitely lacks a lot of flavor. It tastes like the meat was boiled for a few hours and served. Not a hint or whisper of seasoning to be found. Lastly, if you're going to call something a "chimi burger" make sure it is actually a Dominican Chimi and not a regular hamburger. I was extremely disappointed when I ordered this dish the first time I came here and realized that it was not a chimi. Those are just a few suggestions on how this place can make amends. I really want to love Puerto Viejo, but until they switch things up I won't come back. read more

I would actually give this place a 3.5. The ambiance is nice, the perfect place for a nice quiet and intimate dining. I've been here before but I've had better Dominican at local spots. We had the empanadas. The beef one was good however he chicken one was dry. We also tried the berry sangria nothing string but had a nice berry flavor. I had the rice and fried chicken chunks. And my friend had the pernil and plantains. The fried chicken was perfectly fried and the rice was just regular. I heard there pernil wasn't bad but had better. I ordered the salad to be healthy because I liked the sound of avocado. I have grown up in Queens and very used to the Dominican salads with abundant amounts of avocado in my salad, but this one only had 3 slices. The salad itself was not very fresh. It tasted like it was from a bag that you would buy at the store. My dad had the same salad with shrimp and thought that it was not washed. My mom on the other hand had the pollo guisado, which was a delicious chicken stew. The beans and rice were great accompaniments that tasted fresh and flavorful.I think that this place probably is not known for their salads, but for there other dishes. Second time at Puerto Viejo, my family wanted to grab a bite and I remembered I've been wanting them to experience the food. Entered, greeted and seated right away. Cynthia introduced herself and took our appetizer and drinks. We ordered the pulpo special and codfish croquettes. Both delicious and I've always been hesitant to try octopus and on my first try I was pleasantly surprised. Robert kindly came, brought us our drinks and took our orders. A few months ago I made the mistake of letting my best friend taste my sister's cooking and he hasn't stopped bugging me about pastelon since. But my sister lives in the suburbs now so I knew I had to find something to tide him over, otherwise I would have to buy a lifetime supply of duct tape to shut him up. 'Cause it's not like I don't have enough little sister inferiority complex problems ya know!? It took some time and serious research (one does not mess around when it comes to pastelon). I settled on Puerto Viejo because like I said, good food can not be kept under wraps, and certain island foods can not be kept secret. One of those things: PASTELES! THEY HAVE PASTELES! IN THE LEAF! It's a regular menu item! Pastelon AND pasteles! Everybody knows, no one makes pasteles like your great-grandmother does. Luckily, someone's great-grandmother is in the back 'cause this one was awwwwesome. I had the chicken one and was so giddy when it came out, that just like when I was a kid I made a mess while opening it. I remembered why my mom always insisted on opening mine as a kid; I was always so excited I would forget to put a napkin down and would inevitably spill water or grease all over myself as I opened it. Yup....some things never change! Don't care... it was just like I remember my great-grandmother's and I was in heaven. Now every day can be Navidades! Happy day! Happy day! The pastelon was juicy and sweet. I like mine a little sweeter, but this is the age old debate about pastelon so one can not be harsh about these things. My friend was satisfied and felt it was an adequate replacement for my sister's, so I will now get some peace! We also ordered the mofongo. I don't even like mofongo and I liked this one. Ironically, my friend liked the mofongo more than the pastelon! He's so fickle! But then again, it was all so delicious how can you blame him for loving great food. I hear the churrasco is awesome, and as a churrasco fiend I will most certainly be back to try it along with the sangria that was also recommended. Sounds like a perfect happy hour to me! Hands down my favorite restaurant in this area. I seriously can't think of ANYTHING bad about this place. Cute rustic/antique decor, excellent service, good music, and delicious food and drinks. I've only been here once, but after that one time, I could not stop gushing to everybody about this place! The berry sangria is bombdotcom. I got the steak, bf had some sort of white fish (can't remember which), and his brother got the chuleta. Everything was delicious, and it was all really affordable. This was my first experience with Dominican food, so I can't speak to how authentic it is.
