We had such a wonderful time with Captain Aaron. My son and I took two fishing trips during our time in Seward and each time I felt very safe with Aaron as the Captain. We caught some incredible fish! There is no question that our mounds of fish would NOT have been possible without the guidance of the deck hands! If you are prone to being "seasick" bring the dramamine! I did fine but others didn't. The water is rough in Alaska and Wayyyyyyty different than the lower states. We will be back to fill up our freezer once again!!

Captain Eric and Dooley are the best! They give 100% and I promise you will be pleased! They are full of fishing knowledge, help bait your rods, and bring the fish on boarded

I traveled from the east coast to go fishing and had an absolute blast!! I highly recommend Puffin Charters. Their staff was nice, provided all the equipment, bait, guidance and just a great time on the water. Leslie and her team/boats are on my recommendations list!!

Spot on fishing charter. Had a hiking group stick around to fish. Very accommodating. These guys love to catch fish not just troll around. Very knowledgeable and funny. We had a blast. Thank you!

Went on a trip yesterday and had a great time fishing with these guys. They put me on great spots and made the most of the day giving me the opportunity to catch my limits on halibut and rockfish. I also was able to land a few cod and some other species that were released. I ended up with 45lbs in the freezer.

Fished with this outfit in late July of 2011. When I arrived it was cold and rainy and was fearing that the trip may be cancelled due to bad weather. After checking in at the offices (Holiday Inn Express, Seward Alaska) my fears of missing my charter was alleviated. Boarded the vessel "Huntress" with long time skipper Leslie and we headed out to open water to the halibut grounds. Once we neared the mouth of the bay we encountered some rough seas so the captain headed the boat back in to a protected area. It appeared that the rest of the Seward had the same idea as we fished for Silver (Coho) Salmon for a few hours. Most limited out on Salmon and we also caught quite of few Pacific Cod as well. Little after high noon, we made a move to a place called 40 mile bank where we targeted the halibut. Luckily I limited out (2 halibuts) in 4 drops. The other 2 drops resulted in another Pacific Cod and something called an Arrow Toothed Flounder. Once I caught my limit, we waited for others to catch theirs however the halibuts did not want to play. Only individual was skunked from catching a halibut.. not bad since it's fishing. When we arrived, captain Leslie generously gave 30 lbs of packaged halibut the to poor soul who didn't manage to catch one. In my years of fishing, I've yet to see a captain do this.. two thumbs up. Hew first mate Shawn (sp?) worked his tail off the entire time.. and I can't thank him enough for his effort. Will definately return. Gear on boat for salmon were Shimano Tekota levelwinds paired with Ugly Stick rods that god the job done. For halibut, I used an Avet EX on a Tica Alaskan special rod. There were some exhausted people on board who used the Daiwa Dendoh power assisted reels.. very nice.

This trip was everything I hoped for...serious fishing, a long day on the water, and bonus whale and Orca watching. Captain Jacob is knowledgeable, humorous, patient. His deck hand Jackson is equally hard working and patiently satisfied my curiosity about fish finding, gear, fish habits, etc. Most importantly, Jacob knows where the fish are! Leslie and Denni run a very professional business and are generous with helpful tips. I traveled with a backpack and was suddenly weighted down with a 20 lb box of frozen fish. Cost to ship home was exorbitant, so Denni suggested that I call ahead to my next hostel to see if they had freezer space. Sure enough, they had plenty of room to store my fish until my trip was done. I highly recommend booking with Puffin. It's a much better value than a sightseeing trip as we saw the glaciers and whales while catching fish. And considering that halibut goes for $25 lb....well, you do the math.

I whole heartedly recommend J Dock to anyone visiting Seward Alaska but recommend you book in advance. Depending on the month you are visiting will also decide the fish you can keep. The silver salmon derby in Seward is epic in July. Remember, Fish On!

First the positive: Our captain was very friendly, the boat was very nice. We all got fish, and…read morealmost all of us got halibut! Now the narrative: My brother (who's into fishing like I'm into Yelping) came up to visit from FL. He booked for, and paid for this charter. On the day of, our captain had cancelled due to poor conditions. However, my brother still wanted to go out (I outfitted him and my Mom with my waterproof, warm mountaineering gear), weather be damned. After some confusing communications, Crackerjack made it happen. They put us on a boat with a captain and six passengers: us (a group of 3), a couple (2), and a guy from California (1). The other people on the boat were friendly and we started the day in good spirits. The water quickly got really rough, but we endured. No one got seasick. After getting beaten on the waves for over an hour, we got to a spot that was slightly more calm. Within an hour, I caught a halibut! Then my Mom! Then my brother got a salmon! Then the boat started catching less fish. I'd say most of the fist were caught in the first 4 hours. And ALL of the halibut were caught in this time. The seas were ROUGH, and my Mom and I were out in front. Constant wind, constant side-ways rain, and consistent 5 ft swells battered and chilled our bones. (I'm a part-time photographer and I brought my nice camera, I took zero photos because I was afraid of the swells slamming it against the boat and out of my hands, seriously. This is my mountain/ice/snow/rock climbing camera, mind you.) As noon approached the captain asked us if we wanted to do a half day instead of a full day (which was what we paid for)...it was an emphatic yes from the 3 of us, and from California guy as well...who was looking very pale. Then noon hit and my Mom asked the captain "So is this when you go back for a half-day?" and the Captain said "yes, this is when we *would* go back". A hush of horror came over us. Wait...what? We are staying for more of this punishment? (at this point no one was catching anything) My Mom pressed further "are we going back now?". The captain said nothing out loud, but shook his head in the motion of "NO." This was a complete communication breakdown. I'm assuming the couple didn't want to go back when he polled them? Even so, if 4 of us wanted to go back, but 2 of us don't...the 2 overrule everyone else? I guess these boats are not a democracy. We stayed 3 more hours and caught nothing. California guy was grasping onto the boat, trying not to fall over, as he puked. I still have no idea what actually happened, and why we stayed out for another 3-4 hour brutalization. My guess is that Crackerjack wanted to get that sweet, sweet full-day money for all 6 people. So they didn't much care that one person was puking and the other 3 were checked out and catching nothing. Probably a good charter if the weather is good, though.

The gravel lot is soulless, and not very leveled out. There's really no vibe to it, no charm at all, we both felt that it had an industrial feel to it. There's no picnic tables. There's electric hookup, but no water. I am grateful we were only staying for one night, I did not enjoy the experience. Those potholes really need attending to, and the whole lot needs some serious leveling out.
