Captain Will is the kind of captain who clearly loves what he does, and it shows. He's friendly and happy to chat about fishing or the best fish to eat, but he's also constantly scanning the boat, making sure the deckhands are on top of the lines, watching the weather, and keeping everyone on the fish. That balance inspired so much confidence. The trip was fun from start to finish, but you also knew you were in capable hands, which is a big deal when you've traveled three hours offshore, fish for six hours, and then have another three-hour ride back to port. Will is a true professional who has earned our trust and respect. The deckhands were just as impressive. Cole brought so much enthusiasm to the trip. He was patient with our questions, genuinely excited to be out on the water, and his energy was contagious. Joe was one of the hardest-working deckhands we've ever seen. He was constantly moving, grabbing the net, helping land fish, getting rods back into position, and making sure everyone had the best opportunity to catch fish. He absolutely crushed it while keeping a positive attitude all day. A few tips for anyone considering this trip: * Wear layers like you're going skiing, and don't forget rain gear, gloves, and a warm hat. We had cold, rainy weather, but we stayed comfortable and had a fantastic time. * Tip the crew well. They work incredibly hard from the moment you leave the dock until you're back. They absolutely earn it. * The crew does a great job making sure everyone has a fair shot at catching fish. We came home with halibut, rockfish, salmon, and even a salmon shark. * If you're not flying home immediately with a cooler, have J-Dock process and ship your fish. It's well worth it to make sure your catch arrives home in great condition. Landing a salmon shark definitely added an extra level of excitement to our trip, but even without that unforgettable moment, this would have been an incredible adventure. The professionalism, knowledge, and personalities of Captain Will, Cole, and Joe made all the difference. We left with amazing memories, incredible fish, and an experience we'll be talking about for years. We can't recommend J-Dock highly enough.

Our large catch was already filleted by the time we reached port, and we opted to have J-Dock individually package our fish (salmon, halibut, and rockfish) for us to bring back home (they offer shipment as well, but we choose to bring ours back on the plane). Boat and equipment seemed well-maintained for our end-of-season trip. We would absolutely use J-Dock again on a future trip. Note that we were absolutely exhausted by the end, and had a 90-minute drive afterwards -- consider staying in Seward overnight after this trip.

We have a 13 yo daughter and a 10yo daughter who are pretty adventurous and love to fish, but this was going to be so different than the lake fishing they are accustomed to. No one in the family had ever been fly fishing, so this was going to be an adventure for not only my husband and myself, but for our guide who would have the *joy* of teaching and managing all 4 of us. I did a lot of research to make sure that we selected a company who would be a good fit, and I am so very glad we chose to go with Jason's Guide Service. Our guide was Henry and although he was very young and relatively new, he was amazing. He had so much knowledge of the area and was so skilled that you would've thought he had been around and doing this for much much longer. Jason had called the night before letting us know that the salmon were running a little late and that fishing for them was pretty dismal. He offered to let us focus on plug and drift fishing for trout and Dolly Vardon but was open to mixing in some fly fishing. He prepared us for what could be a fairly unproductive day and how fly fishing could be frustrating for the kids, particularly our youngest. We told him we wanted to at least try some fly fishing just for the experience but would be just as happy drifting and using spinner reels if that didn't work out. Henry was so incredibly patient with all of us the entire day. He was an excellent teacher and my kids were thrilled to throw on the waders and get in the water. Both of them caught on fairly quickly and my daughter even caught a couple of trout within a short period of time on the fly rod. We alternated between fly fishing and plugging and we all were able to catch some beautiful rainbow trout, a few Dollys and a few salmon. Most of the salmon were too large and not keepers, but super fun to catch and get pictures of. We did end up being home dinner which was more than we expected due to our timing. We saw many, many eagles and were super lucky to hang out in fairly close proximity to a young brown bear - the first and only we ended up seeing on our 14 day trip. Most importantly, we had a great time and it was an experience my kids enjoyed enough to want to build on it in the future! Mission accomplished. These guys know this river well and will work their tails off to get you to the right spots. Just as importantly to us, they are super kind, patient and gracious with beginners, including kids. We highly recommend them and would absolutely book with them if we are lucky enough to return!

I read a review where a guy is complaining about the size of the halibut they caught compared to others. Give me a frigin break! What do you want from these people? Its not like they have a crystal ball and know where the biggest fish will be. You drop a line, it lays on the bottom and with any luck a halibut will take it. With better luck a big halibut will take it. Believe me, Captain Phil and Alaska Summertime Charters want us all to catch barn door halibut. That doesn't happen that often. Alaska Summertime Charters provided a good boat, Captain Phil did a great job of getting us out and back safely. He worked throughout the day to help us be successful. Every one of us left completely satisfied. I give them 5 stars because Yelp doesn't have 10. For your comfort, bring food and drinks. Wear boots and have rain gear. Rely on Captain Phil to filet your fish and plan on giving him a decent tip. Fish ON!!!!

We hit the Silver (Coho) salmon first, then off to hit the Rock fish, then headed out for Halibut. The Halibut did not cooperate on this day as we were one short of being maxed out for the boat. Not for lack of trying. Phil did his best. Hey, its fishing not everyday is going to be the best. Phil was a great captain, and was patient with my wife and a teen that had not fished before. We stopped to see seals while preparing some bait, we saw a whale, and mountain goats. Overall we had a great day and if we get back to Seward we will look up Phil and fish with him again.

The staff was friendly and the captain greeted everyone. They do forewarn about sea sickness, losing items like a hat and also safety to prevent falling overboard. Things they obviously have no control over is who will get seasick (they had Dramamine and ginger chews for purchase) , what the weather is like, and what sealife you may or may not see. Additionally they must stay a good distance away from from the animals for safety reasons. They do have a bar for alcoholic beverages, sandwiches that are part of the package (turkey, beef, vegetarian with option for gluten free bread), but you may wish to bring your own food and snacks. My best advice: - book the tour early - get in line early so you can get a seat outside the main cabin (good views and helps reduce some of the sea sickness) - bring or purchase some dramamine - bring sunglasses - bring binoculars to better view the sealife and glaciers - make sure you have warm clothing that you can easily secure given the high winds - know that no two people will have the same experience and that you may have good weather and animal sighting or you may not
