This is a small family-owned and run Indian restaurant. They are very friendly and welcoming have seating for about 20 people much of the business when I was there at lunch time was takeout. THEY ARE NOT A FAST FOOD. It take about 20 minuates or more after you place your order. The food is truly outstanding and authentic. Take out lunch for 3 was $34 not including sodas or any other drink. I would highly recommend this restaurant but I would call ahead to place your order for takeout and even consider calling ahead if you're going to dine in to save you a lot of time. read more

Yelp pretty spot on with the consensus on this one. The food was decent on my end, the bread was good, rice just ok. My friend got the butter chicken and said their were pieces of bone in it. I don't know if that's normal or not, but they weren't happy. I'm not going to hold that against hem too much because that was their experience not mine. My dish was probably good enough to get a 4. However, the non personality, 0 customer service that is given matters. The employees there weren't very friendly, and kind of made it awkward. I know there is always a little bit of a culture difference, but even in those cases, friendliness is a universal attribute. First time to Punjab Express tonight, and we are so glad we stopped in! My husband and I have been craving good Indian food for ages, and this place really fits the bill. We started off splitting an order of Samosas. Great, rich flavor, not too greasy, and the sauces were very tasty (and perfectly spicy!). I had always wanted to try paneer, and asked the waitress for a tiny bit to sample. She brought me a piece of raw, and a piece of fried. The raw has a bland, simple flavor (customary of the cheese), but was clean and had a nice bite to it. The fried cheese though.... get out. SO tasty! There was some sort of sauce fried in with the cheese, and it was delicious. I would have ordered a plate of just that. While waiting for our entrees, we split a mango lassi. It was quite sweet, but with enough tang to balance it. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Husband had the lamb curry. Both received a resounding 5-star rating. Amazing flavor, perfect amount of spice (we got "medium"), and we could not stop eating! The garlic naan was the perfect compliment. Husband's only negative comment was that he wished there was more lamb. He got roughly 1/2-cup lamb, to 1-1/2 cups sauce. Thanks for ruining my dinner! I ordered online for delivery, and my order was delivered through GrubHub. I ordered chicken tikka masala, fried okra with onions, a side of basmati rice, garlic naan, and a Diet Coke. When I unpacked my order, I was missing the basmati rice. I contacted GrubHub like my order form said to do, and after they "researched" my order, they responded with saying the restaurant confirmed they put the rice in the bag. So I guess that makes me a big fat liar, right? I told them again that I didn't get my rice, and they only responded with again saying the restaurant said they put it in there. I asked them to check with the delivery man to see if he still had the rice BECAUSE I DIDN'T GET IT. But it fell on deaf ears. I know the rice was only $2.25, but come on. I now have chicken tikka masala with no rice to soak up the gravy. And I am being charged for something I didn't get. GrubHub's response was that they were sorry I "felt that way," and they offered me a $5 coupon for next time. Nope, if that's their level of service, I won't be ordering from any place that uses GrubHub for delivery. AND I WANT MY $2.25 BACK! I'm extremely disappointed, and I can't believe Punjab Express would continue to say they put the rice in the bag even after my multiple times of saying I didn't get it. My full order with delivery, tax, and tip came to $32. Do they really think I'd lie over $2.25??? Give me a break. Spend your money somewhere else...at a restaurant that doesn't essentially call you a liar if you don't get your full order. And since they're keeping the $2.25 for an item I didn't get, I'm pretty sure that makes them thieves. Never again. read more

This is a wonderful little place. It is quaint with few trappings but the food is fantastic. The owner is especially friendly and willing to make sure you are happy with the food. Was in Turlock today looking to buy a car...and on my way home back to the Santa Cruz area I used YELP to help me find some good Indian food. YELP did not disappoint. The reviews sent me to Punjab Express where I had a SENSATIONAL lunch of Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan. Terrific barely covers it. The restaurant had the requisite Indian videos on the big screen...and I found it too loud. I asked the charming ( but shy ) waitress if she could please turn it down. She did. Food came out quickly, but clearly had been prepared just for me as the spiciness was precisely what I asked for. Tried a new Indian food restaurant today and we are so glad we did! The menu reads it is serving "North Indian Food". Can't wait to try it again! I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan. He ordered the Lamb Curry. Chicken Tikka Masala- amazing flavor! My first bite was literally mind-blowing. The spices and the flavor were noticeable individually but together created a beautiful flavor! I had seen the chef cut fresh veggies while he was making our food and you could tell. The dish was topped with fresh garlic as well. There were chunks of veggies (bell pepper, maybe cilantro or parsley? Not sure which) and the meat was in smaller cubes which I liked. Further the meat was extremely tender and no fatty portions. Lamb curry- medium spice, lamb had good flavor and good spice. The amount served was a very filling portion. Meat was very tender! First time customer at this particular restaurant and it was amazing. I ordered the Tikka masala with garlic naan and an order of samosas. I absolutely loved the masala. I asked for spicy and it was definitely spicy (my favorite)! Samosas are my all time favorite and definitely enjoyed the flavor and consistency. I would definitely come back and maybe even dine in when I have more time. Like previous reviews stated, they are a little slow but definitely worth the wait! I was so scared at first to try Indian Food because I had never had it, I finally talked my husband into it one night and my Indian friend told me exactly what to try wherever I go try some.. so I called Punjab Express bc not only was it down the street from my house but it looked like it had good reviews. I ordered, got there to pick it up and it's a simple little hole in the wall place (which usually have the best food) and I was very surprised when I ordered 4 things and only paid $16 to feed both of us. WOW!! Seriously, WOW!! I must admit that my introduction to food from this region 25 years ago was an exceptional one as I then lived in New York. Unaware that I was so blessed, I have repeatedly tried to find my favorite dishes, but they have never been close to as good. Until today. Today, our first time here (we just moved to Turlock a week ago), my spouse and I ordered a mango lassi (to enjoy while waiting--it was perfect), both varieties of samosas, the Aloo Gobi, the chicken tikka masala, and sides of raita and naan. First the samosas: the vegetarian filling is amazing. Beautifully flavored and just hot enough to need some raita on the side, but not so bad it hurts. The outside was a bit too heavily salted for my taste, but I don't use a lot of salt generally. The other samosa, which said it came with chick peas, it turns out is smothered in a chick pea-laden sauce, fresh herbs, and a bit of yogurt. Also amazing!! The Aloo Gobi---best I've had since my friend Shailaja used to cook for me in New York. So intense. The cauliflower was firm to the bite, the potatoes firm on the outside and soft inside. The chicken tikka masala was also perfect--just a little sweet, all white meat chicken that was tender and lean. The naan is phenomenal--chewy, fresh, just enough burn but not too much. The raita was needed (we ordered everything medium--for my lame Caucasian palate that was all I would have been able to take) and tasted good, but wasn't quite as mind blowing as the rest of the meal. Still, it served its purpose for me. Last mild criticism--they did forget to put my rice in the bag, but the young man taking care of my order was asked to help unload the catering truck just as my order was being assembled. It's an understandable error. Please, try this place if you haven't already. The food is absolutely remarkable. And they make it to order right in front of you while you wait--nothing was sitting in a warmer waiting to be sent out the door. I can't wait to go back!! read more

They lost my business for good. We have supported this place since their opening in Turlock and although there has always been a problem with their basic understanding of service and communication as a resturant and a business, we always tolerated their inefficiencies. We have traveled throughout the world so completely understand that standards vary. But today was the last straw. We ordered our usual food through door dash and just received the delivery. To our surprise, chicken tandoori was uneatable due to being extremely spicy (and we eat real spicy). No rice at all and very short on Naan despite the fact that we paid for them. This time, we called them. As usual, the person barely speaks any English (we are very understanding as we speak 5 languages). We were very supportive and explained the issue but she continued to argue with us that we ordered our chicken extremely spicy but when we told her that we were looking at out online order, she began to have difficulty understanding us. But nevertheless maintained her argument despite the fact that our order showed otherwise. Then we discussed the fact that we didn't have rice when our food comes with rice and that we paid for it. She had the nerves to tell us that because of their fees to door dash, they cut the rice out. This didn't make sense at all since we paid for it. But again, we told her that their menu doesn't say that... well, again we began having problems with the English language. We told her about the fact that they shorted us on the bread too. But she maintained that it was correct despite the fact that we were looking at our order. Again this didn't make sense since we paid for specific number of Naans. But she maintain her rediculously illogical line of reasoning that I'm sure won't make sense in India either. I hope someone translates this to the owners as they lost a very loyal customer over pennies. I can understand their difficulties during these times but I have no sympathy for a business trying to rip off its customers. Your customers will stay loyal to you if you stay loyal to them, rather than trying to screw them over. So, you made over $50 on this order from me but guess what, you will not make any money from me any more and possibly from several others who will read this review. This is how businesses go under and you do deserve to go out for screwing over your customers. read more

We got our starter and it was good then soy tandoori chicken it was decent then waited and waited for our dinner tikki chicken, sag, rice, nan....45 minutes...other diner came in ordered, served and finished their meal. I finally had to ask for our food, the sag and rice stone cold the bread soggy. We took it to go, their excuse is it takes longer to cook our food. The table next to us had the same meal. This was my go to place for food. Today was ridiculous. I came to pick up my order after I had them repeat it to me over the phone, she charges me and then I realize they are missing the main dish that I wanted. I waited for 30 minutes. How can you not understand when people give your orders over the phone. At least employ someone with a grasp of customer service. The girl kept telling me I didn't officer that specified dish. Wow! Tucked away in an unassuming location, this place is a hidden gem. The prices are reasonable and the food is delicious. The service was very good, and the staff were kind.
