The short version: Nice flavor and average service, almost isn't worth the aggravation of dealing with the traffic and finding a spot to park in Coral Gables, however, if you live/work in the area, hit it up. The experience I was rolling around town and suddenly felt the need to get a nice Venezuelan empanada. Yelp pointed me toward Punto Criollo. As usual, there is no parking on the Coral Gables streets, and the one spot I found near the business had a $2 per HALF hour pricing that, on principle alone, nobody should pay, even if you just won the lottery, until they fix the viality and all the construction annoyances. Anyway. Finally found a reasonable spot and walked a couple of blocks. Punto criollo is a cozy little place with just a few tables and a counter. I honestly didn't know if they had table service or not, so I ordered at the counter and sat down. They never asked if it was a to go order or to eat there, but they charged a tip (from 18% to 22%, your choice), I would think that merits table service; still, while other people were sitting with their plates and cups, I got called to the counter and received a paper bag with four mini empanadas, and a cardboard cup with my coffee. I did sit down on a table anyway and opened the bag to find only two empanadas; went back to the counter to show my receipt for four empanadas and got my bag back with the four... and sat down again. All through this process they were dealing with printer issues, which may have been the origin of the confusion... but I digress... The first thing to note here is: while empanadas here are half the price than in other places, they are also half the size, so it is really a fair price, but in no way "a bargain". The second: if you order a "marrón grande" they give you a "marrón grande" Venezuelan style, you don't need to explain yourself and describe how you want your coffee: it is a marrón grande!!! BUT the fact that all four mini empanadas were unmarked in the paper bag did aggravate me a bit... I don't care about the confusion when the cashier apologized "oh, I thought your order was to-go", but I ordered two cazón and two mechadas, and not knowing which is which because all four look exactly the same and are mixed together kind of rubs me the wrong way. They included in the bag a cup of garlic sauce, which was perfect, though I'd suggest asking the customer, because one may prefer a guasacaca or a hot sauce... or, some of us, all three... but, again: it was very good. The empanadas themselves, I loved the cazón ones, but the mechada ones were a bit dry, and (although it was a very good flavor nevertheless) they were definitely not the carne mechada empanadas I was craving. The service was fine. I think they should engage a bit more with the customers if they have doubts about what we're ordering instead of assumingthe wrong thing; or they could "guide us" through the restaurant (I don't know exactly how to explain it: usually the restaurants "guidances" are intuitive, but the fact that they didn't really mess anything up, but still doesn't feel like we understood each other as client-customer, feels like some miscommunication had place there). Overall a nice spot, I'll try it again if I end up hungry around Coral Gables.

Casual ambiance. Attentive staff. English and Spanish menus. Good maracuya/passion fruit juice. Tasty arepas. I'll likely be back.

I'm a big fan of Venezuelan style empanadas and came across this place. Here are my thoughts 1) the location is in the center of downtown coral gables. Close to miracle mile and many of the offices in the area. There is street parking or the city parking garage next door 2) restaurant interior was nice and bright. They had a large cooler of various sodas to choose from. I'm a huge fan of Postabon Manzana and had to get those. There is also outdoor seating but it's summer in Miami so not for me 3) service was okay. Someone at the front greeted me and asked me for my name to get my order. Came back and said it would be about 3-5 minutes. Ended up being a 20 minute wait and I'm not sure why has they had quite a few ppl working in a small space. 4) empanadas were delicious. For $1 they are a very good size and the filling was amazing. I got the queso and Molina and they were fantastic. The green sauce they serve with the empanadas is a must. 5) the queso frito was perfectly fried. Not as good as the kind you get at a Nica restaurant but def a solid option. 6) French fries were a little confusing. They had two different styles that tasted differently than the other. Felt like they ran out of fries and just tossed the remaining ones into a single batch. Overall, this is a really good place in coral gables for empanadas. I will 100% come back here to eat again

I came here for breakfast. The signage is in Spanish but they have both Spanish and English menus. I ate in and the staff was very helpful and attentive. The cafe con leche was perfect. For food I have the Viva Viviana arepa fried (grilled was an option). The garlic sauce was very tasty and compliments the picanha.I also got shredded meat empanadas to go. The dough was sweet so not to my liking. I'd definitely return to try some more of the menu.

Great food, server provided very friendly service, and cute atmosphere. Had various arepas, empanadas - (especially loved the fish one) and two desserts and passion fruit juice! What a lovely place. Glad Yelp led me to it!

Finally a Venezuelan place that doesn't rip you off on the prices. Empanas are cheap (small) but tasty. The arepa is beautifully stuffed. And the papelon con limón ( even though I think it's over priced ) definitely order it if you never tried it. Due to staff a shortage they have one server and even though she's awesome, do have patience if she doesn't get to you quickly. For the my fellow Americans, Venezuela food is delicious, fried and packed with good stuff. If you're picky def try the empanadas, order a few and if you like them jump to an arepa and possibly a "pabellon" if you want a meal. For my Venezuelans: El lugar esta bonito, muy bien localizado y la comida está muy buena. Por el precio las empanas están del carajo. El tequeno le faltó con queso pero la masa está muy buena. Metanle mano al papelon que aunque caro está muy bueno.

Great spot behind Miracle Mile. This was my first time come for lunch and they have a great lunch special. The pasticho was INSANELY delicious. The sopa de auyama was also very good. Service was quick and the waiters were very friendly and welcoming. Very casual ambiance. Will definitely be back!!

The food was consistently delicious and everything tasted incredible. Today I was walking through Coral Gables and got hungry, so I decided to give it another try after a couple of disappointments a few year back. We were greeted warmly and the service was outstanding, the staff was attentive, courteous, and always smiling, which really makes a difference. They started us off with complimentary arepitas de chicharrón that were excellent. I ordered the patacón de carne, which was packed with flavor, though the shredded meat came a little cold. We also got the patacón de pollo and we loved it. Both came with fresh avocado, tomato, and lettuce, and the green plantain was perfectly crispy. They also brought out their four house sauces (white, green, pink, and spicy) and every single one was fantastic. The portions were generous and more than enough for one person. I'm really glad my return visit was a positive experience. It reminded me why I loved this place so much, and I'll definitely be back to try more dishes.

The service is attentive, and the food is excellent -- both in flavor and presentation. It's a place we have genuinely enjoyed visiting. However, during our most recent visit, there were a few concerns that stood out. First, we noticed that the prices listed on the menu did not match the prices on the receipt. While the differences were only a few dollars, it's important for pricing to be transparent and consistent to avoid confusion. We also really enjoyed the live music -- it created a wonderful atmosphere. However, once the band went on break, videos from the same artist played for over an hour. In our opinion, the content seemed directed toward one specific culture. Given that this is South Florida, where multiculturalism is such a big part of the community, it would be great to see entertainment that reflects and embraces a broader audience. Finally, while the food remains very good, the portion sizes feel small for the current pricing. It seems that prices have increased noticeably, and the value does not feel quite as balanced as before.
