Best Pizza I have ever had. The building feels almost rustic in a way, but the lighting was nice and the pictures on the walls were beautiful. Their Brick Oven made by the Bricks of Mt Vesuvius, AKA the volcano that buried Pompeii, and the ingredients tasted so fresh, I was surprised they did not have a unlimited ticket to the Garden of Eden. Kid Friendly, The food was so fast that you could talk with somebody, and it would be there in a blink of an eye, the Waiters and Waitresses are a REAL highlight. Have been going here for years before shows at the Altria. Ever since they changed to table service, the service is terrible - very slow and always have to track down server for drink refills or to get the check. We got our own napkins and water refills bc no one came to the table. I left the table twice to find our server to order dessert & ask for the check, and then again to see where dessert was after 15 minutes. Consistently get apologizes for slow service. for a chain, this is some of the best pizza i've had. it's a thin italian style pizza, and they have a wide variety of options ranging from red to white pizzas. i personally love their pizzas with prosciutto, as i am a lover of prosciutto. you order at the front and pick somewhere to sit. they'll take your pizza to you, and are relatively quick. it's surprisingly cozy in there with lots of warm lighting. there is a lot of seating options, and most times it's pretty empty. overall, definitely recommend! read more

4.5 stars! I lived with a few blocks of the original Pupatella in Arlington, and was thrilled when they opened a restaurant in Richmond. Pupatella is THE place to go for authentic Neapolitan pizza. Their special oven makes all the difference. The restaurant is clean and airy and each time I've been there the staff was friendly and helpful. They have a wide variety of pizzas, salads, and appetizers, but I can't bring myself to order anything but the margherita pizza, and an occasional salad. The salads are simple, but the ingredients so fresh, and dressings good. They find the BEST arugula - tender, peppery, and sweet. The pizza is amazing, with the same thin, chewy, slightly charred crust I loved in Arlington. The cheese is creamy and fresh. The only complaint is the sauce is a bit heavy-handed ... just a slathering of San Mariano tomatoes is all that is needed. Pupatella pizza is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. read more

Stopped here for lunch while visiting VCU. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant was very clean. The menu said the 11"pizza was for one person, bit it can very easily feed two. I ordered a Chorizo pizza and my wife had the ham and mushroom pizza. My crust was really good but there was very little chorizo, like one small piece per slice. My wife had plenty of mushrooms on hers but very little ham. The pricing was reasonable, but they need to include more toppings. Not to sure on a return visit. read more

I'm a customer of the original Pupatella and I recently tried one of their expansions, both in the NoVA suburbs, so I know the drill. The location here was quite pleasant inside and easier to park at and more central to Richmond than those other stores are to Arlington. It was seemingly staffed by local college kids, which is not the case at the other Pupatellas that I could ever tell. However, the bottom line is the pizza was not up to snuff. Admittedly, maybe the toppings I ordered just didn't work. I tried their pesto sauce out of curiosity, which is nut-free for some reason (I'm all about special dietary needs, but I wasn't aware that pesto aficionados with nut allergies was that big of a constituency). I added pine nuts on top, along with spinach and red peppers. The toppings weren't spread that evenly, and they didn't cook quite evenly enough, with a couple of my pine nuts tasting off due to being borderline burned, while the edge of the crust didn't quite reach the optimum char one expects of Neapolitan pizza. Additionally, the peppers didn't seem to contrast the pesto strongly enough (I guess you really need sun-dried tomatoes or something), and I ended up putting a bunch of crushed red pepper on my pizza to make it taste better, something I don't normally have to do. On one hand, maybe I should just stop messing around with variant sauces and order tomato sauce as it's often the best part of a pizza. On the other, if I'm going to pay $15 for a personal pizza, it had better be really good, and this one was just okay. read more

I decide to make a custom pie based on another reviewers feedback. Since I can't have cheese I got a pie with prosciutto, arugula, Caramelized onions, garlic and tomato sauce. It was insanely delicious. Everything just worked well together. Generous amount of prosciutto and the onion tied it all together. It was a tad bit much arugula so I had to brush some away. I live literally 1 minute away from Pupatella and I could honestly just walk in through their front doors and order a pizza every single day. Pizzas are about 11 inches and Pupatella recommends one pizza per adult. They slice pizzas into 4 slices, but from experience, I am only able to eat 2 slices at a time. So I usually share a pizza with a friend or save the other half for another meal. If you're a VCU student, they have discounts on Tuesday. They have cheaper prices for classic DOC, pepperoni pizza, diavola pizza, margherita DOC, select salads, gelato, and nutella pizza. Normal prices are a bit pricey in my opinion, ranging between $10-13, with few specialty pizzas at $16. I've visited Pupatella 3 times and every time I go, you can bet that it's a Tuesday.But otherwise, students get 10% off every other day. I have tried the classic DOC, diavola pizza, and margherita DOC. I love how thin the crust and how the mozzarella just melts in my mouth. What makes Pupatella pizzas stand out is that they are authentic Neopolitan pizzas. I thought the history and cooking method of Neopolitan pizza were interesting, so I thought I'd share. Real Neopolitan pizzas are cooked between 800-1000 degrees Fahrenheit and usually cook within 1-2 minutes. You can bet these pizzas are made as they're ordered (aka fresh). Due to the high temperature and fast cooking times, the pizza will have a soft and pillowy crust with a charred/leopard spotted crust. Pupatella pizzas are certified as true Neapolitan pizzas by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN) in Italy, which protects the culinary art of making Neopolitan pizza. read more

I came here with some friends and we were very hungry and we heard good reviews about this pizza place. I really enjoy pizza and believe I have a knack for reviewing authentic Neapolitan pizza since I've had genuine pizza in Naples and a few other locations in the US that taste extremely similar to the pizza in Naples. Pupatella sadly was a disappointment and lacked a lot of flavor and that unique tasted found in Naples. It wasn't bad but definitely could have been much better especially given the higher prices given the quality. We ordered the burrata ($20) which was my first time having it and was not a huge fan. The bruschetta ($5.50) could be improved by toasting the bread much more and adding less tomato and more basil. My custom pizza ($14.76) was very thin (was mentioned in the menu to be fair) and the toppings I added did add a lot of flavor to the pizza though it did not taste like it was from Naples. Overall it was an ok place and I would much rather prefer going to a MOD or Blaze pizza for a better tasting pizza at a lower price. read more
