I adopted a puppy named Edna from Puppy Pleasers Rescue a little over a month ago and I just wanted to come on here to commend Renee. She is very communicative and has the biggest hearts for dogs and their families. She lead me to my best friend. Edna enjoys pup cups, playing with her frisbees and bringing all her toys out to the backyard, the windows down in the car, and most importantly trips to the park. Duh! She is an absolute delight and loves learning new tricks. 100% recommend Puppy Pleasers Rescue :)

We had been looking for a small puppy to add to the family (we already have a dog and two cats) and I ran across a chiweenie puppy on Petfinder that was available through this rescue. He checked all the boxes for us (good with dogs, cats, kids) so I filled out an adoption application. The next day was Saturday and although we had not heard back from Renee yet, I saw they were holding an adoption event about 45 min away that day. We decided to go and see if the puppy was there and "just meet him". Due to COVID, the adoption event was outside but there was plenty of shade and water (for both the dogs and prospective adopters). The second we held him (Gonzo) we knew he was the one for us. Luckily I had brought a printed copy of the application I submitted since there were a few other families interested in him, and Renee ended up picking us to be his forever family! He is now named Milo and less than 24 hours later, loves and follows his big brother Diesel everywhere! The adoption event was busy and we were there for several hours, but he was worth the wait! We would highly recommend Renee and Puppy Pleasers Rescue!

What I don't have photos of are: -The joy I saw in him while sticking his head out of the window on the drive home -The way he cuddled with me last night -The way he rolled on his back while watching tv on the sofa next to me and wanted me to scratch his belly -He was so hesitant to jump on the sofa and only after I insisted did he do it. He stayed kind of stiff for a few minutes and then finally just fell back and put his head in my lap and nuzzled me. He fell asleep and snored. -He slept all night next to me cuddled up, snoring and stretching out. -He was shell shocked when we got home yesterday. I had a delivery from instacart and he just walked up to the gate, didn't bark didn't react. He seemed exhausted and I think shell shocked was the best word. -Today the county was cutting the grass along the street and my neighbors in the back where out and about and he barked! A completely different dog from yesterday. I think he is sure of me and sure that this is all real and is feeling protective. Going and getting him is one of the top 5 things I have ever done. My heart breaks just a little every time I think of what he has been through and how long he waited. But I truly believe it all had to happen so we could finally rescue each other. I love him so much and can't thank the staff at Orange County enough for not euthanizing him and for hanging in there with him and praying for him. IT WORKED! I will send more photos and updates of the big guy. And while you guys were praying, I was too. My oldest dog Diesel died right before Thanksgiving and I will always have a missing piece of me. I have 2 female dogs but really I got them before I was ready for another dog. I love them but they have not been through anything. I told everyone I was waiting for the next Diesel, a dog that really needed a break and someone to come through for them. Can't thank you enough and thanks to Nextdoor.com for posting photos of Zeus and saying such nice things about him.

On September 9th, my family adopted two kittens, Aren and Delle, from this rescue. We were told they had recently recovered from an upper respiratory infection and were now healthy. Unfortunately, less than a month later, our sweet Delle passed away on October 10th from FIP -- a fatal illness that likely developed from an infection that hadn't fully resolved. We followed all the recommended vet care and sought immediate treatment the moment she showed signs of illness, but despite every effort, she declined quickly. It was a deeply traumatic and heartbreaking experience for our family -- and for Aren, her sister, who is now grieving as well. I want to make it clear that I deeply understand and appreciate the mission behind animal rescues and the challenges they face in caring for so many animals in need. My intention in sharing this isn't to criticize, but to hopefully encourage more thorough medical reviews and communication before adoption. Even small improvements in diligence could help prevent another family from being blindsided by such a devastating situation. I emailed the rescue on October 11th, not in anger but simply to inform them of what happened. Unfortunately, I never received a response. Delle was deeply loved and is deeply missed. I truly hope that sharing her story leads to positive changes for future adoptions -- and to more happy, healthy forever homes.

The facility and the dogs were dirty, and the smell was overwhelming. No reputable rescue should be keeping animals in that kind of environment. They also charge a non-refundable appointment fee just to schedule a visit. While they say it goes toward the adoption fee, it still feels like a red flag, especially when you see the condition the animals are in. What's even more concerning is the contract. It requires puppies to be spayed or neutered by 6 months with no exceptions. We were told by multiple veterinarians that this is not always safe, especially for certain dogs whose growth plates are not fully developed. Early spay/neuter can lead to long-term health issues, but there was absolutely no willingness to consider what was best for the individual dog. Instead of focusing on the animals' well-being, there seems to be a heavy focus on strict enforcement and control. The overall experience felt more intimidating than supportive. Another major concern is how criticism is handled. Anyone who shares a negative experience is met with aggressive, defensive responses rather than accountability. That alone should be a red flag. There are many reputable shelters and rescues out there that truly prioritize the health and well-being of their animals. Please consider adopting elsewhere.

I used to volunteer a lot, then got out of it as I got older, and was happy to have volunteering put in the forefront of the news with Disney. I knew the volume of people signing up for events, and was pleasantly surprised when I painted a house with Hands On Orlando. The day consisted of painting four houses, with 100 volunteer expected. The HOO coordinator was very organized, arrived early and was very friendly. There was a HOO coordinator for each house, and one who monitored the whole project. They were very clear in their directions, and made a very humid day painting a house in not a great neighbor hood a great experience. Being an annual passholder for Disney, I wasn't worried about the processing time for the receipt of the Disney voucher, and yet it was in my email by Tuesday. Its kind of sad, the coordinator said that the month before, for the same event they had only twenty volunteers, and now all their events are full. While we appreciate all the Disney is doing to help communities, I sure wish more people would volunteer without having to be bribed, and I can't wait til we do it again!

I was also a captain for Hands on Nashville Day, where we painted and spruced up a local high school, and even helped out at the animal shelter a few times. When I moved back to O-town I was super excited to find a local Hands On chapter. There is truly something for everyone here. Whether you like to work with your hands and get dirty, or just sit and hang out with some at-risk kids, or play with the puppies and kitties at the local shelter, Hands on Orlando has a huge network of opportunities, linking you with others who share your passions and organizations that run on the support of volunteers. To sing up, they keep things super simple. Log on to www.handsonorlando.com, create an account, then click on the calendar, and click on the event you wish to volunteer for. A quick sign up and print off of the waiver (or your coordinator can give you one at the time of the event), and you are good to go! The volunteer coordinators are super fun and work well with the organizations to ensure a smooth-flowing but fun volunteer experience. Since I've been back in Orlando, I have had the pleasure of volunteering with Coalition for the Homeless, Clean the World, and even the City of Casselberry through Hands on Orlando. This is a great way to get to know all the awesome local groups that take care of our community. I encourage everyone to find at least one Saturday morning a month to give back in 2015!
