Oh, pupusa! How do I love thee...... So, I've been in love with pupusas ever since the '90's when a colleague of mine from Central America turned me on to them and shared some with me with evident pride. They just might be the perfect lunch food: a round tortilla, made by hand and stuffed with a variety of different fillings. They are satisfying, convenient and depending on the filling you choose, can be very vegetarian friendly. Pupuseria Cuzcatlan does an excellent job of making delicious and fresh pupusas with a variety of fillings including cheese, loroco (edible flowers with a delicate flavor), beans, yucca and pork. As other reviewers have commented, their pupusas have a lower ratio of dough to ingredient than many other pupuserias, resulting in a more intense flavor from the filling. Today, I tried the cheese/jalapeño and cheese/loroco. They took about 15 minutes to arrive at table and were as fresh and delicious as can be. Pupusas are traditionally topped with curtido (cabbage and carrot salad) and salsa; the curtido here is exceptionally fresh and perfectly seasoned. The ensalada drink (fruit juices with tiny pieces of cut fresh fruit) was delicious and refreshing, served with a boba straw so that you don't miss a piece. Service was extremely helpful and prompt. Price? $2.50 per pupusa. Oh, except $1.00 per pupusa on Mondays. You cannot go wrong. Street parking. Plastic and cash only. Thank you, El Salvador, for sharing your national dish with Los Angeles. I was riding with a friend who had never been to a bar before and didn't think he'd ever had Salvadoran food. My man, it is time to broaden your horizons! The chicharones, mixto and frijoles pupusas were pretty tasty. The queso y loroco seemed somehow to be missing loroco and they were also out of ensalada drink. Too bad. I haven't had pupusas in so long and this place was great to satisfy the craving! I'm vegetarian so I got one of the spinach and one of just cheese. They are handmade and made to order which is amazing! It does mean that orders take 20-30, so plan ahead. I do wish they had a side of rice and/or beans (maybe they do? but not that I could tell) to go with. The salsa they include with the pupusas is also really great! The $1 pupusas are the revueltas and the bean and cheese! You get way more than what you pay for! These pupusas are about the average size but they have a very good amount of filling for $1! The pupusas revueltas actually taste like chicharron unlike other places where they use more beans than actual chicharron! The place is very clean and there is plenty of room to sit and eat!
