Saturday, 11th April 2026 North Salem, NY Sunny 66°F When we heard about Purdy's being one of the very few Westchester restaurants to receive a Michelin plaque for their stewardship of Farm-to-Table cuisine, we knew we had to visit. Blue Hill at Stone Barns (2 Michelin stars) and La Bastide by Andrea Calstier (1 Michelin star) are the only two Westchester County restaurants with Michelin Status. Purdy's rugged farm based surroundings on this clear bright morning were a bit unusual for what one would expect. However, once we entered the landmark old house with its original well appointed ambience of 1775 and beguiling aromas coming from the kitchen, we knew we were in for a treat. Menus were not quite ready (printer problem?) upon arrival to our table. Once we received the menu of the day - we knew what to order, plus we were accompanied by a great friend who happens to be a wonderful chef who knew the place well, and she is quite familiar with what to choose based on the well-mannered upper echelon Westchester locals. Here is what we ordered. Firstly, a bottle of bubbly to celebrate our birthday guests. Followed by ... Not a good meal. Been here four, five times and always enjoyed. Sat late lunch...mussels bland, burger totally lacking flavor (or a pickle, just a cold green tomato) hidden under odd 'frizzled' onions, the fried chicken was not crispy nor packing any kind of brine/seasoning. Menu is a bit tired actually. Maybe someone in the kitchen might want to reconsider? The market next door looks significantly better....not sure if I'm coming back anytime soon. read more

This was my second time here and it did not disappoint! THE DEETS: A community-oriented restaurant with reasonably priced, locally grown food and high quality seafood. You can't get more local than the food grown on your own farm and more than three quarters of all the vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen are grown on the farm. That makes for a very small carbon footprint and really fresh food! Farmer & the Fish is located within the 22 acre Purdy Land Trust in North Salem, New York in a beautiful 18th century house that dates back to 1775. You are literally dining in a historic house and it is such a nice vibe. FOOD & BEV: We were a party of three and we started off with some bevs of beer and wine with the house bread and delish salted herbed butter. We respectively got a lobster roll, clam chowder with a side of polenta fries, and the tuna burger. Everything was on point and really good. We finished off with a coffee, espresso, and cappuccino. The foam on the cap was so tight & probably on of the best I've ever had. SERVICE: Our main server was amazing but they practice team service and everyone working today touched our table at some point and we felt the love. AMBIANCE: The house itself is one year older than the USA and there is a fireplace in each nook. There is a quaint little bar when you first enter with a small raw bar at the end of it. Get the Scallop Salad and the Big Eye Tuna with Spicy Shrimp, Garden Vegetable Fried Rice, and Thai Coconut Sauce. Seriously. Absolutely incredible flavors in every bite. Even the micro green garnish on the tuna was flavorful, fragrant, and bright. We really enjoyed our dinner here. Sitting outside on the porch was so nice, especially with the great weather and the service was also great. We started with the oysters and they were all very fresh, our favorites were the east coast Beau soleil. My husband got the cod and loved it and I got the tuna burger which was amazing. It wasn't chopped tuna but rather a whole piece of tuna. I also got the polenta fries on the side and they were amazing. We then shared the white chocolate bread pudding with salted caramel ice cream and peach crisp and didn't like either of them. We ended up leaving them untouched after a couple of bites. Overall, we would come back for the food, but wouldn't get the dessert again. read more

This place is great and I usually prefer to sit at the bar for more of an experience. Faves include oysters and the fried fish sandwich. Cocktails are great, bartenders are personable, and they always have a nice selection of beers on tap. It's like walking into an old farmhouse, and you can even see the garden where they grow everything. I've never actually stopped into the farm store attached, but maybe next time. read more

We've been here three times before, for dinner and this had been our favorite restaurant. I guess everyone has a bad day? The waitress was not friendly. The Hot Crab Dip -- which I've ordered every visit because it was so good -- was awful this time. Someone was overzealous with the salt. Very disappointing. My burger was overcooked, and the fries were again inedible because of the salt. Not worth $30. Then came dessert. This was the worst ice cream I've ever had, and I was never offered a coffee refill. The texture was like clumps of fat stuck together -- not creamy at all. We've had it multiple times before and it was nothing like this. I don't know if there's a new chef or what, but I can't recommend the place right now. We'll likely try one more time, and if it's bad again, we won't make the trip. For $100 a person, I expect good food and attentive, friendly service. I can be treated like a chump in Manhattan -- I don't expect it in Putnam County. read more

Purdys Farmer & the Fish has been in my periphery for a while; while it was never on the front burner for me, I had always heard good things about it and one of my colleagues in particular would always laud it. My cousins and I were looking for a place to eat and catch up, and since Purdys was centrally located for all of us, we decided to check Farmer and Fish out for dinner. PF&F very much epitomizes the whole farm-to-table concept (though it did not originate it). In addition to the property here in Purdys, they also run a similar restaurant in Tarrytown (called Hudson Farmer & the Fish). In addition to the actual restaurant, the property also has a farm as well as a farm shop. The restaurant itself is in what looks like a farm house - it's cute on the exterior with a front porch for outdoor seating. The inside is smaller than I thought - it's lively and a little tight with a good amount of tables packed in there as well as a bar. The decor is rustic with dark wood tones cast against white stone tabletops. Judging by the name, I was expecting a good selection of seafood on the menu. I found that, however it leaned heavier on fish than I had initially thought; non-seafood dishes were limited. The menu has a good selection of dishes broken down by apps, salads, mains, sandwiches (called "fries on the side"), raw bar selection, and sides. We started with drinks - I went with their version of a Moscow Mule which was smooth and refreshing. For my app I went with the crab cake; this was really good - not overly bready with lots of crab. It was paired with a tasty aioli and these thin crispy noodles to add texture. For my main I went with the lemon sole; again, this was super tasty - the fish was flaky and came with a corn-parmesan risotto that had a lot of flavor. We also decided to get two sides to share - polenta fries and shrimp fried rice. The fries were good - they kept their shape and came with a tasty dipping sauce. The rice was great - it was less rice per se and more shrimp and broccoli, but I wasn't complaining; it also had a lot of flavor. We opted for dessert - I got the key lime bar which was the perfect size and a good finisher to the meal. Service was spotty; everyone was friendly, however not all of the apps were served at the same time, and there was a delay in one of the sides coming out with our mains. That's a pet peeve of mine, so IMO they can tighten it up a bit in that department. Service was also a little slower than I'm used to, but I'm not sure if that was a one-off when I was there or just how the restaurant operates. Despite this, I had a good time at PF&F; the food is definitely the crown jewel here - it was all fresh and high quality with great flavor. Met friends here for a weekend lunch. Kind of tight seating inside. Was a bit sorry we didn't reserve for outside because it was a beautiful day. Appetizers - shrimp cocktail (3 jumbo), crispy calamari which was excellent. A bit atypical of the standard Italian restaurant. Southern fried chicken was a bit bland. Had a thick crunchy coating. Halibut was tasty. Scallop salad (had the dinner portion which was still small) The scallops were amazing. There were all kinds of surprises in that dish. Something that looked like purple grapes were pickled green tomatoes. If I was a meat eater I would have gotten the steak salad which looked incredible with mouth watering rare slices. I sampled this place last night at the urging of my aunt who lives in the area and has a lot of experience dining around here. It was a good sign when my aunt wanted to meet us here for dinner. The three of us sat at the bar. I glanced at the cocktail menu which was filled with creative and beverages that included some completely new things as well as a twist on old favorites. I took the twist route with my first drink, a spicy margarita. It was tasty and packed a punch. Most importantly, it was strong AF. For my second beverage, I ordered something purdys and an alliteration with another p. Picadilly? Pocahontas? Something that may or may not be along those lines. This was served in a martini glass and was also very enjoyable. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share including the calamari, farmer's salad, and burrata which was a special of the evening. The farmer's salad was my choice with greens, shaved veg (I distinctly remember some watermelon radishes in there), candied walnuts, manzanilla olives, and feta. Let me just say that I have not been eating proper olives. The flavor of these olives was like getting hit with a brick to the face. Holy SHIT. Where do they get their olives? Someone get me their number. Overall the salad was really wonderful. And not just as salads go. What I mean is, this wasn't just a good salad this was a good DISH. If you know, you know. The burrata was creamy and delicious but I didn't put too much energy into this as I was more focused on my salad and those overwhelming (in a good way) olives. I don't eat seafood but I heard the calamari were crisp and delightful. For my main, I was pleased to see one vegetarian entree, the rigatoni pasta with broccoli rabe, chickpea sausage (yes you read that correctly), chilis, and parmesan. INCREDIBLE. The rigatoni were nice and thick. I LOVED the flickers of heat provided by the chili. The chickpea sausage was also quite good. I could eat this every day. For dessert we had a bread pudding and that was also out of this world. Both of my dining companions ate their entire meal. The place is super warm and cozy. I have been to both Farmer and the Fish locations many times and always had a great experience. But not on Saturday afternoon, 10/18/25 at the Purdy location. When the waiter came, there was no hello, no "my name is", just "do you know what you want?" And a look on their face that told me this was the last place in the world they wanted to be. I ordered a simple hamburger, and I mentioned a few times it had to be completely plain, just the meat and the bun. The waiter asked, "Do you have allergies?". I replied yes. The waiter asked, from what? I replied, everything, just the meat and the bun plain please or I will get sick. I took one bite of the burger, and I knew something was wrong. I picked up the bun and noticed this green garnish, and I could smell garlic. I showed the bun to the waiter, and I just got "you want a new bun? ". Yes, please was my response. I didn't get a "sorry" nothing! The second bun came. I turned it over and unbelievable as it may sound, the bun had the same garnish on it. This told me they didn't even look at the bun before bringing it to me, TWICE, knowing that I have allergies! How incompetent can you get? If you can't even get a simple plain burger order correctly, you shouldn't be working for a restaurant that charges 25 bucks for one. Try McDonalds or Wendys. By the time the third bun came, I had eaten the plain meat but unfortunately the garnish from the first bun had assimilated into the meat and I was sick to my stomach all night. It takes a lot for me to write a negative review, but this one is important because when someone says they have allergies, it is obviously not taken seriously at the Farmer and the Fish in Purdy. This could have resulted in someone getting seriously sick or even dying if the conditions were different. When the check came, I still didn't get an apology, no offer to take the burger off the bill, nothing again! The bill was 159. I would normally give a 41-dollar tip on a bill like this. Instead, I gave 16 bucks, and they were lucky to get that. I worked in the service industry when I was in college back in the 60's so I know how important tips are. Waiters have a responsibility to protect the health of their customers. Obviously this one falls into a "DIAMOND in the rough" Last note, the friend I was with told me she left her 500-dollar black shawl at the table. When she called to see if they had it, she was told no. Could this have been some kind of revenge for leaving a small tip? Once you get through the hurdles of getting a spot there, I will say, it is worth it. Every dish my husband and I ordered we loved. He even loved vegetarian dishes that he is usually not too fond off haha. I also loved the fun drinks with veggie twist. Service was pristine. It felt like I barely put my utensils down and I had someone ready to take the dishes and my drink away to either get a next one or leave. When visiting friends in upstate New York we went to this restaurant for dinner. We went later into the evening so we weren't able to see the full grounds of the establishment but the farm feel was very evident. We dined with our pup so we ended up sitting outside. With jackets, hats and the heat lamps we were plenty warm. Amazing clam chowder and mussels to start, excellent cocktails and wine by the glass selection and my steak was perfectly done. Rustic charm. I suspect you'll find those two words in 99% of reviews of this restaurant. It's an accurate descriptor, but the experience was more true to form than I expected, not just some interior designer's interpretation of "rustic charm." For me it touched on something nostalgic. I spent a decent amount of my childhood on farms -- those where my friends lived or where their grandparents did, or where I tagged along with friends to multiple-day religious conventions. These farms were functional, not movie sets. Garden furniture, if it wasn't plastic, was always a little rusty, slightly askew on uneven ground. Paint was always peeling a bit (or a lot) somewhere. Glass windows were opaque with dirt. This is the vibe that PFATF evokes even though the restaurant itself is scrupulously clean and the sweet and capable wait staff are dressed in button-down shirts and ties -- far more presentable than we ever manage to be at dinner. The restaurant sits on a working farm and it feels that way. There is an old fashioned root cellar dug into a hill behind the main restaurant building. There were, in September, just a few rows of herbs (Thai basil, dill, etc...), late greens, and maybe broccoli plants in the garden by the parking lot. Given the on-location provenance of the produce on the menu, it's not surprising that we found just about everything vegetal at this restaurant to be delicious. ROASTED FARM BEETS ($19; goat cheese, cashew's & farm chili) were remarkably sweet where flavors and sugars had been concentrated by a long, slow roast. I loved that they were well tossed with goat cheese, which essentially melted into the dish. Cashews added some pleasant texture, chili kept the chevre from lulling your tastebuds into complacency. FARMER'S SALAD ($16; field greens, shaved farm veg, candied walnuts, manzanilla olives & feta) included a mixture of lettuces that the website tells me were grown on the farm. The greens were fresh, tossed with crisp, mild, thinly mandolined radishes, cucumbers, summer squash. Dressing was restrained and the remaining ingredients were in good balance, despite the candied walnuts being a touch burnt. BUCATINI ($26; farm basil pesto & sungolds, parmesan) was cooked al dente and generously tossed with basil mint pesto and freshly grated Parmesan. Oh -- I would be remiss not to mention the lovely strips of rosemary focaccia that the restaurant was kind enough to bring to the table at the start of the meal. It came with homemade, creamy farmer's cheese, flecked with crunchy grains of black salt, schmeared onto the plate for dipping. Where we found the menu less strong: the proteins. A generous plate of AMISH FRIED CHICKEN ($29; tangy red cabbage, scallion mash & herb gravy) was quite the vision. I half expected angels to break into song as the plate lowered to the table. But although the golden crust was thick, competently fried + blotted, and the chicken inside perfectly moist, everything was undersalted and seasoned . This could not be entirely counteracted by more saline elements on the plate such as the very buttery mashed potatoes or the red cabbage slaw -- quite acidic -- which had been tossed with thinly mandolined radishes, summer squash, and cucumbers in a lettuce-free redux of the Farmer's Salad. KINDERHOOK FARMS GRASS FED BURGER ($24; hudson valley farms cheddar & smokehouse bacon, frizzled onions & special sauce) came with a very thick, patty cooked to the requested medium rare temperature, topped with thickly sliced bacon (maybe short cut or Canadian bacon?), butter lettuce leaves, and cucumber quick pickles. The bun was excellent, fresh, fragrant, barely toasted. Perfect burger? Almost. Sadly the meat was under salted again and relied on its sidekicks for flavor. Maybe the greatest disappointment of the evening was the NOVA SCOTIA HALIBUT ($38; farm caponata & toasted walnuts, saba). The good: sweet, syrupy, raisiny saba was just lovely with the toasted walnuts, some of which had been turned into a puree I think and smeared attractively on the plate. Caponata included eggplants and garlic only as far as I could tell -- not the medley of tomato, eggplant, sweet peppers, onions and herbs that I expected, but delicious nonetheless. Less great: Halibut was rubbery in parts, undersalted and very bland, though the top and bottom had been pan fried to an attractive brown. I speculate that the texture was a result of improper defrosting -- perhaps something involving a microwave. (Not that I've ever done anything like that.... Definitely not me.... ;) Interestingly, the fish came garnished with carrot greens. Given the seafood heavy menu, I have to wonder if the kitchen just had an off night. TLDR: crafted, well-portioned food/cocktails, great ambiance outside. on the expensive side and with some stricter policies / added fees when my partner suggested this spot for his bday dinner, i was a little hesitant based on the reviews. we also drove about 45 minutes for this place, but once i made the reservation, it was too late to cancel- as they charge a $25pp cancellation fee. the ambiance was quite nice- there's bonfire pits, music playing and outdoor lounge areas if you want to grab a drink before dinner. drinks will set you back around $17 each, but the cocktails are innovative. we thought we'd be able to wander around the farm, but seemed that wasn't the case really. had dinner in the garden- - bread (complimentary) really tasted home made rosemary focaccia, 1 slice per person - calamari- very tasty, tahini sauce, with crispy chickpeas - shrimp cocktail -3 shrimp for $22 made me roll my eyes - fried chicken entree- massive portion, delicious and hearty mash with a tangy slaw - swordfish with escarole/beans; fish was lovely with a great char. beans great. did not like the sausage added, very bit odd texture and reminded me more of ham hocks. the broth also had a bit too much acid for my taste. escarole was lacking and I wouldve enjoyed more than the 2 pieces in my serving. This could be considered nitpicky commentary but I was a bit surprised the dishes were not more veggie forward being as its a farm. I was also a bit surprised there was only one special (an appetizer), again- advertising as farm to table you would suspect the menu would be a bit more fluid and rotational with the season. from what I reviewed beforehand, it seems this menu is relatively the same always. service- upper-mid tier. bartender was friendly and enthusiastic, waiter was polite. just seemed to wait a long time without waters being refilled throughout the experience. additionally, our interaction with the farm storm cashier was a bit unfriendly there is a 4% added fee to your bill which is not tip and instead "to support the kitchen"- this annoys me, please just increase the prices in your menu vs tacking on an added fee in total with tip but excluding drinks, about $165 for a dinner for 2. fair considering it's a special occasion. read more

There's a nice fire pit outside and some tables and chairs with heaters. I love old architecture and this did not disappoint. Old house, stone and wood, small, quaint and crowded. Service can be challenging at times. They are busy so you can't fault the busy staff for trying, so sometimes you will wait. Unfortunately, the food was not up to par. Calamari was chewy, not hot and needed more seasoning. Same with the lamb, it was tender but I guess I'm more accustomed to Mediterranean seasoning. The lobster roll was ok. Sat at the bar..,.two bartenders neither welcomed me but those they know they called out and waved to. Ordered a burbon on the rocks and he filled the glass with ice like a soda. Ordered NY strip said medium well, pink not red.....he said medium...I said pink or red and guess what it was red....very red!!! Sat there for over 15 min with my knife and fork crossed in the middle of my plate and finally had to ask for the check...but my plate was never cleared. The swordfish was tasteless and the texture of baby food the dish was inedible the spinach & garlic overcooked to point of bitterness. The oysters seemed that water was added they were soupy and oyster liquor was flavorless & no flag or explanation or which were what type could only differentiate the east from west coast. Jam packed restaurant with tables too close together was getting full body contact from the waiter due to the eating. Plum old fashioned was okay. The carrot coconut cocktail interesting. The poached pear cocktail was thick gritty & bland and that was with the glass being 80% ice. Had to chase down waiter for sugar for our tea & coffee. Barely ate anything! Whole dishes left on table. Mussels had no broth. Bread was stale not toasted. Scallop salad barely dressed. We spend almost $300 on a meal we left on the table. Had to pick up food on my way home. Was going to try the ice cream but the flavors we've wanted to try, we couldn't because they only came with specific desserts. read more

Last night I took my family there , we had a reservation. When we arrived no one was there to greet us . At that point the bartender yells "Do you have a reservation! " I responded yes . Then a server comes out to confirm. No hello no greetings! Then they stuffed the five of us in a 4 person table . The bread that was served was under cooked and the waitress had an attitude! This is not how I want to spend my money with sub par service ! The manager also had a poor attitude. Not sure if it was a bad day or just taking the customer for granted because the place was full. Needless to say I will never be going back or recommending this establishment to my friends. It wasn't our first time there but certainly our last !
