They are loaded for bear right now with winter stock - vast arrays of skates, hockey gear, skis, snowboards, and accessories. They tend at this location to stock ONLY what is demanded for the season, so if you're selling something from an off-season or are looking for a bargain tennis racket in November, you will be disappointed. They do full-season rentals on equipment, which seems to me like a great way to wade into a new sport. Their buyback scheme is as follows: when you bring a used item in, they will price it. If you leave it on consignment to sell, you will get 50% of the price, when it sells. If you want to take trade-in credit right away, you get 40% of the value. If you want to get cash on the nose right away, you get 30% of the value. I looked at the range of conditions and availability for skates (which we were shopping for today) and the price range seemed quite decent for what they had. I waited for our skates to be sharpened, and observed them helping some skiing and snowboarding customers and handling a buy-back transaction, and they seemed very thorough, professional, and knowledgeable. The used prices aren't ultrabargains, but it's difficult to really find a specialty store that deals with used goods. You have your thrift stores, used car dealers, and other than that you're left with Craigslist and garage sales for the most part. So I think this is a pretty good niche, and for the ever-growing and changing-of-interest kids, a great great resource. They'll have to wow me on repeat visits for me to get up to the lofty five stars, but a promising four stars for now.

He works with people well and even during busy times gives people the time they deserve and need. After our first time there and the amazing help we had received from CJ we hoped he would be working again today. We were in luck! He took great care of my son from buying a new helmet, looking at sticks, and purchasing new skates today. Wile this location is more than an hour from us we feel it's well worth the time. We have been greeted and helped all the employees have been kind and helpful. We greatly appreciated CJs want to explain everything so that we could understand and felt we were making the best investment for our child.

The shop itself is relatively small, but still has a goodly amount of stuff in it. I'd say that if you're looking for something specific, call ahead and have them order it for you, like I did. And they'll do all the hockey basics here - sharpen your skates, sell you some tape, fix your equipment, and so on. A 3/8" hollow on my skates and a 2005 Chianti? The perfect combination.

I held a conversation with one of your associates that was very excited that the city is finally launching our Lacrosse program for the youth. We laughed and also talked about how many kids we see getting the opportunity to further their athletic careers into college, and with Lacrosse, so many more doors will be open for them. Once you were free, your associate tried to get your attention for me so that I could take a few seconds to introduce myself and also to hopefully begin to build a relationship with your business. For the record, Preferred Hockey is basically just a single dude running a hockey repair shop out of his garage. He's been around forever, so I'm sure the repair work he does is professional and durable. But the skate sharpening experience... not so good. I asked for a 1/2" hollow on my skates, and the response was... "I only give one hollow to goaltenders, and I don't reveal what it is..." Ooookayyyy... Not sure what the deal was with the Kafkaesque goalie skate sharpening policy, but I decided to drink the Kool-Aid nonetheless. BIG MISTAKE... Played a game that night, and I literally could not stand in the crease. I don't know what the true hollow was, but it could not have been any sharper than a 7/8". Slipped and slid all over the place like a dying fish... Look, if you wanna go all Federico Fellini on me and not reveal your business secrets, fine. But the LEAST you could have done was tell me that your super-secret hollow is nowhere close to what I was requesting, and would most likely result in a sharpening I would hate. Instead, he took my five dollars without thought, and directly contributed to me letting down my team. It's too bad, because it's probably the last five dollars he'll ever get from me.
