The wait was much shorter than predicted which was great! Food came out promptly and the server was very on top of what was happening in the restaurant, gave great recommendations! Caesar Salad was a great size to share and the Bang Bang sauce was a huge hit across the table! The drinks were a bit dull was my only downside. We went here yesterday while on a day trip and were completely disappointed. After being seated it was 20 minutes to take our order and we ordered a side and soup while waiting on the waitress to ask a question about the food we wanted. She walks away and the side and soup came out within 5 minutes. When she gets back she says we can order what we wanted but when it came out the seafood was completely inedible. The batter was barely hanging on and the fish smelled terrible like it was incredibly old even the shrimp tasted awful. Seafood is always fresh and flavorful. Fish tacos, lobster bake, seared scallops and risotto, and mussels with bacon and Gorgonzola cheese! So many great choices! My wife and I used to like this place. We took our kids there and the food was absolutely disgusting. The beyond burger was horrible and looked even worse. The hamburger patties look like the same cheap patties you buy at any grocery store. My wife ordered the rum punch and it was terrible. Even my kids' food was mediocre, at best. Our wait staff was friendly and courteous. That is the only thing preventing a zero star rating. I do not recommend this place. read more

Not worth your time, definitely better food on the beach. I got pulled pork, wasn't even cooked, was rubbery it was disgusting! Plus the bun just kept falling apart because of how wet it was? how are you going to charge me almost $17 for a pulled pork sandwich just for me to send it back? My boyfriend and his friend both got hamburgers and they were rock hard (they both got rare!) They give you like 5 fries on the side and it costed so much money. Just home from a delicious meat at the Purple Urchin. Under new ownership and I have to say they're killing it. Food was delicious, our bartender Christian was attentive and friendly. Excellent food and bar service HOWEVER - a $30 Paella meal does not come with bread and bread is not available to order on the side. The chef got mad at the Bartender for writing it on the ticket but the bartender had the right customer service idea! Give the customer what they want...eventually they gave me some toast (which is why they didn't get a 1) but a restaurant this caliber needs to raise the bar in the back (no pun intended). They gave me bread with my seafood risotto a few weeks ago...but the waitstaff said the chef was mad because the bread is reserved for avocado toast. Not cool y'all! read more

Got the ceab-stuffed haddock, and it was made of dreams. Tons of crab, great haddock, and the veggies and potatoes (I asked to swap the rice pilaf for potatoes) were cooked perfectly. 10/10. Nice upstairs/outdoor seating which has a great view of the beach and stage. Also, our waiter was nice. As for the food... I wasnt impressed. The appetizer nachos claimed to have "melted cheese" but it was really that cheap/liquidy cheese that you would get at the movie theater or a sports game. The salsa tasted like it was from a jar of Tostitos. To top it off neither the cheese or beef were warm when they got to our table. Fish tacos and fries were slightly better but not by much. The fish tasted as if it had been previously frozen. Drinks weren't bad. Our bill came close to $90 and my boyfriend and I both felt gross after eating here. Sorry but not worth it. read more

If you are heading up to Hampton Beach for a seafood meal, fried or not, this is not the place to spend your money. Instead, drive up the coast just a few miles north to Petey's seafood past the North Beach and you will not be disappointed. The Purple Urchin used to be a good restaurant where you could sit and listen to the bands and watch the fireworks, but just visiting the other night was a big disappointment. The tables were too low, what happened there? But most importantly the Fish was drenched in old oil and tasted of grease. Also, the waitress....forget it! My best girlfriend and I found the Purple Urchin as we were strolling through the great boardwalk on Hampton Beach. This was an unexpected stop on our road trip, so everything was an improve. We found the casual dining area which was open before 5 upstairs. We were seated, but not before being checked for the dress code. We are right on a beach, however shirts and shoes are required. I had to pull my long skirt up over my bikini top, however Emily didn't get a second look even though she wasn't wearing pants over her bikini bottoms. Haha, okaayy. We were seated right on the balcony overlooking the music pavilion which sits right on the beach. It was a little chilly that day, however the view was spectacular, and the people watching is always a guaranteed good time. We started with the Spinach and Artichoke dip, served in a crispy bread bowl with chips. DELISH! Everything tasted super fresh and hot, and the dip was chunky and generous with the ingredients. I had Fish n Chips, and while Emily created her own vegetarian entree, the waitress was as helpful as she could be, but couldn't really offer too many of the things Emily wanted. We went to Purple Urchin for my bachelorette dinner and it was really lovely. I loved the upstairs screened in porch- there was a band playing across the street so we got the background music. Our server was fabulous, if a tad bit absent (but not so much a that it delayed us). Seven of us split the spinach and artichoke dip and it was awesome. You could really taste the vegetables. There were enough corn chips to dip and it came in a nice crunchy bread bowl. For some reason the kitchen couldn't sub salmon in a wrap that came with chicken, so I got grilled salmon, served with rice pilaf and grilled asparagus. Delicious... The prefect base for our booze-fueled night. I had a bite of the peanut butter banana sandwich dessert and it was divine. Drinks were prompt and packed a good punch. This is a prime location with a wonderful view of the beach. Thankfully, the food was also very good. We had dinner here recently and the whole experience was excellent. My wife and I had fish & chips and my daughter had the mac & cheese off of the kids' menu. The fish was giant, and the fries were top notch. Even the little side of cole slaw was tasty. Our server was visibly tired, but still was very attentive and took great care of us. I would definitely recommend this place, and will hopefully return for another meal on my next trip to Hampton Beach. read more

If I were to base my review solely on my entree, it would be 5 stars. However, I have to take everything into consideration to provide a detailed review! My wife and I initially went here because of the good reviews on Yelp, and because the restaurant's website listed "fish tacos and sangria for $10" as the Tuesday night special. When we arrived, we learned that the website was out of date and these nightly specials did not exist. But, our server (Maggie) was so nice, we decided to stay. The pre-dinner bread that they served was not very good, so we did not even eat it. It seemed kind of old and hard. I ordered the Atlantic Ave. Bangers; which are basically homemade seafood sausages. That's right-thick sausage links stuffed with mushed up shellfish. It is normally served with mashed sweet potatoes, but they did not have that item, so they let me have it with the lobster risotto at no extra charge. This turned out to be one of the best, most original meals I have ever had. The bangers were so tasty and the seafood was so fresh, it was just amazing. The dish was also served with asparagus. My wife had the swordfish with polenta. She really liked the swordfish, but found the polenta to be a little too buttery. The restaurant is unassuming. It is nothing fancy, but it is just right, and the prices are reasonable for fresh seafood. The service was excellent, and one of the managers came out to apologize to us for the error on the website. She took the time to chat with us, and she was very friendly. What we expected to be a quiet night turned into much more than we expected. Right when we walked inside we were greeted by the charming hostess. After a request for our party of 6 to be seated at the bar the owner Kaycee opened the second bar for us and watched the Celtics game with us. That's when we had the pleasure of meeting the manager Tatiana. She was our personal bartender and ended up being the coolest girl we've met. Sadly the Celtics lost but then everything went up from there. Our sadness from the loss turned into us dancing while the owner DJ'd for us. Tatiana even got into the action and it was a night we'd never forget. The Purple Urchin is our new favorite spot and we will be going back every time we're looking to have a fun night! read more

Went there for dinner was excited for seafood as this place was recommended by my brother who came years ago. They didn't have any of the ingredients on hand for my first three choices for dinner. Then I asked for a lobster roll with butter and no mayonnaise and fries and they brought it out with Mayo and chips. Had them send it back then tried ordering a drink and they didn't have several types of alcohol so I basically played peekaboo with the menu because we didn't know what ingredients they actually had. The Purple Urchin Restaurant is a jewel on Hampton Beach! The food is amazing, the staff friendly and the view of the ocean is spectacular! The Spinney Creek Steamers were delicious in a white wine broth and the Ahi Tuna so flavorful and refreshing. The entrees were so delicious that everyone in my party wanted to share! The Pan Seared Scallops over Lobster rissotto were devine. Steak frites was a juicy, tender steak with plump, crispy fries and the Pan Roasted Haddock was the most delicious seafood dish I have ever tasted. I was convinced this was the best meal I have ever eaten, but after one bite of the House Dessert, Key Lime Pie, I knew this was the best meal I have every eaten! This is the closest most of us can come to being Kim Jong Il watching his missiles pass before him, with goose-stepping babes twirling flags like majorettes. They serve Courvuosier if you really wanna be the Dear Leader - just put on shades and a green Mao suit. Nobody will bat an eye. Be prepared to defend your stool, though - usurpers will constantly try to sieze space on the Boulevard from you and you must guard it zealously.
