I am so grateful we found Putnam and Dr. Emerson a few years ago. My dog is extremely fearful and it was a terribly stressful experience working with other vets and being shamed for his behavior. I'v e used Putnam and Dr. Emerson over many years caring for my flock of parrots. They've always given great care and attention.

This place is horrid and they lack empathy towards animals. I have a sweet golden retriever and I was told to sedate her for routine blood work because she was too hyperactive. I offered to sit with her, to calm her and they dismissed me both times. The technician who drew the blood was rude, insensitive, and impatient. She told me that I didn't sedate my dog enough. After awhile my dog was returned to me and she limped for an entire week from obvious roughness during the blood draw. Please do NOT take your pets here. Whoever owns this clinic should be ashamed of themselves!! I've been a dog owner for 16 years and my dogs were never mistreated like this place did to mine. I used to go to Baystate Animal Clinic in Danvers until they closed their doors and one of the vets joined this practice so I assumed it was reputable. What a mistake!! I'm appalled that Baystate would merge with a heartless place. The staff from Baystate also demonstrate an aloof demeanor which they never did before. The owner at this place clearly wants to have a continuous revolving door and minimal hassles. Consumer Beware!! read more

My dog was to be spayed at Putnam Vet today - I dropped my dog off at 8:30 and got a call at 12:10 that they were unable to do the surgery because she had a skin infection between her back legs and they were concerned about making an incision near this area ..... BUT THEY HAD ALREADY SEDATED HER !!!! So after a couple of hours I went to pick her up - they handed me a bill for $425 !!!!! I wanted to speak to someone to discuss this bill - no one was at the office that could make a decision about not charging for anesthesia (not sure why they didn't examine her BEFORE sedating her) .... No one was able to make a decision as to possibly applying a credit for when she does get spayed ..... bottom line: horrible customer service !!!!! I encourage you to find another vet in this area. read more

I'm so grateful to have found Putnam Vet Clinic. I have been bringing my pets for 10+ years to Danvers Animal Hospital. Service....Putnam is run so professional and friendly. I cannot even compare the two other than to say you don't know what you're missing until you experience the difference. Promptness and attention to detail...even with Covid going on, they have everything setup to make your visit as prompt but thorough as possible with a lot of attention given to detail. The techs are so thorough and patient and take so much time to capture every bit of detail about your concerns. You're not rushed or cut short. They truly care about the wellness of your pet, are purposeful about the visit and extremely thorough. I've had multiple situations with my pets where the staff has gone above and beyond. I've been able to submit photos and videos the staff reviews with the doctors and advises....I could go on and on. I have transferred all of my pets to Putnam from DAH. read more

I brought my dog here after first trying one nearby spot that was ... less than adept with a difficult dog... and handled it pretty poorly (we'd gone all out on some interventions that got him as far as he is today from when we first rescued him years ago, so we'd seen a variety of vets and trainers in our prior state). Not all clinicians have that training or experience, so that was fine, but clearly also not a good fit for our type of dog. Our experience at Putnam Veterinary Clinic, across veterinarians and staff alike, has been a night and day contrast. They routinely take numerous extra steps to calm and support my very anxious dog, who, being a dog with rough early years as a stray and a lot of fear-based aggression, is incredibly hard to work with. I appreciate their use and recommendation of both Rx and more natural/sensory soothing options in these scenarios. You can also tell that the vet-techs really care when they pick him up during "Covid" drop-off, even despite his challenging behavior. In pre-covid days, as much as he hates being touched on his paws even by us, his owners, he could have a whole array of procedures be done to him, and then still give a tail-wag (the peanut butter distraction helps, but I'm convinced he picks up on the fact that they "get it" and care). They've accommodated my family's working schedules to the best of their abilities when he's had some rare emergencies pop up. Similarly, front-desk, vet-techs, and veterinarians alike have all taken the time to call in and check up on him after procedures big and small and counsel us if any concerns arose. Would strongly recommend to anyone who cares about their animal being in the best hands. read more

If you are in search of small animal care I highly recommend Putnam. I have several house rabbits and my experience has been anywhere from checkups and sneezes to surgery and (sadly) euthanization. New to the area, heard nice things about Dr. Emerson and her team. Unfortunately we we've only able to see Dr. Illingsworth- who is not very warm. She comes off as a know it all and is quite frankly rude. My dog has Addision's Disease which requirers monthly visits. Having dealt with this for the past year I have become quite familiar with her medication regimen. Dr. Illingsworth argued with me on the dosage and proceeded to say that all dogs get the same dose- much higher than she has ever been given. Very scary stuff! Please be aware! We have been clients of Putnam for over 30 years. We've had cats and dogs and couldn't ask for better care or compassion. Dr. Emerson, Dr. Illingsworth and the whole staff have always met every need our fur babies have ever had...even when our beloved Powder (our 11 year old white boxer) had to be euthanized they treated us and Powder respectfully and with the utmost compassion. We highly recommend this group of professionals to anyone moving into the area. We live in Groveland. I find the staff at the front desk, and on the phone very ill-advised, and cold. The appearance that they do not work well wih animals. It is just a job. The prices are outrageous, and both vets are know it alls, and condescending. I would not call it a good experience, and they need to understand pets are most peoples family. Do not give them a try. We have had a long and wonderful relationship with Putnam Veterinary Clinic. They have taken care of all of our animals over the years and they give our pets exceptional care. There are always a number of staff members with us and our pet(s) for any appointment and they clearly love their work. There are a number of other veterinary businesses near us but we are more than willing to drive for about 20 minutes to get to Putnam. I have had nothing but excellent experiences with Putnam Veterinary Clinic. The circumstances for my first visit were unfortunately not the happiest...my hamster was on his death bed and I got a referral from my local vet since they didn't know how to properly treat the little guy. Putnam is now where I will bring all of my little 'babies' from now on. Though they couldn't save my hamster, they did everything humanly possible to help, and sent me home with some hope and a bunch of supplies to try to nurse him back to health. I've since brought my two guinea pigs in for check ups and I trust Putnam completely. They have a specialized veterinarian who deals specifically with exotic pets like guinea pigs, hamsters, bunnies, and even an iguana or two! The veterinary technicians, front desk associates, and veterinarians all treat your animal like their own, like a member of the family. They don't rush you or make you feel like you're just another appointment in the day. If there's something wrong, they'll take as much time as they need until they can figure out how to help you. I don't even live nearby, but I'm willing to travel any distance to get there knowing that my fuzzy children will get the best care possible. read more

Update: I take my 4 Guinea Pigs to see Dr. Fabien and sadly she has left. I was still going to go and see another vet. I make sure to take them at least every other year for annuals. I called and schedule a nail trim for this coming Friday 8/3/18 with no problems. Today, however, is a new day and someone from their office called to say unless Gus gets a physical for a charge of 74 they wouldn't cut his nails. I spend between $100-200 every time I go and now I'm being refused service, even though he was just seen this March. But since it wasn't marked as a yearly wellness check, it doesn't matter. He was fully examined in March while being seen for a separate reason as well. Although it was a physical Dr Fabien was kind enough to not charge since she did other things that came close to 200. This shows they care about money and not the animal, I'll be finding somewhere else and I recommend you do too! read more

I initially chose Putnam for convenience: they are literally 30 seconds from my house. However, the quality of care and customer service has exceeded my expectations. One cat has had 2 annual physicals, and last week, she had a teeth cleaning and 3 major extractions. They likely could have recommended this surgery a year ago, but recommended that we try a different food first. I knew that the procedure was necessary. I was so happy with their communication before, during, and after. You never want your pet to have to go under anesthesia, but I felt confident leaving her with them. They gave excellent instructions, post-opp, and their cost estimate was on-point. The post-opp care instructions were easy to follow, and they called to check in on her the next day. She is recovering wonderfully, back to her old self within a matter of days. I highly recommend this place, they will take great care of your pets! They don't recommended anything unnecessary, and the staff is wonderful. read more

I've taken two of my pets here in the past year and have been VERY happy so far. The staff has been very good at fitting me in even last minute and Dr. Fabian is super nice and helpful. Would absolutely recommend and if my other critters weren't already seeing other doctors I would take all my animals here. I have been taking my pets (three dogs and a cat, over the years) to Dr. Wendy Emerson for more than three decades. She and her colleague vet Dr. Rachel Illingsworth and all of the vet technicians and reception staff have always been terrific -- answering questions, providing support, giving prompt, thorough feedback when needed. There have been emergencies over the years where they have reassuringly taken care of my dogs. Their routine care (annual check-ups, immunizations, blood work) is superior. And their sensitivity when one needs to make difficult decisions is heartfelt and really beyond the call of their duty. I live in an area well-served by veterinary practices and animal clinics, yet even when I moved farther away recently, I stayed with Putnam. I wouldn't think of taking my canine or feline family members anywhere else. read more

My entire adult life I have wanted a bunny and my dream finally came through this year when my boyfriend and I rescued our little guy Salem. I had scheduled an appointment for a routine check up for him as he is a rescue and we wanted to make sure he was in tip top shape. I unfortunately had to cancel when the appt came round as I was very sick. The front desk staff was very understanding regarding my last minute cancellation and I was able to reschedule. Well, I woke up one morning and my litte guy wouldn't go to his food bowl - was breathing very heavy and shaking. I called right away and they were able to squeeze me in - on Christmas Eve no less. Being an inexperienced first time rabbit owner I was not able to get Salem in his carrier for some time. I called the vet office in a panic that I couldn't get him in his carrier and was going to miss the appointment. They told me not to worry and gave me some very helpful suggestions to try and get him in there - one of which worked. When I finally got him there they took me right in and the vet tech who took down our information was very friendly and asked all the right questions to make me feel at ease that they could handle an exotic animal. I am not sure of her name but she was petite with long hair and glasses. By the time the actual vet came in I was nervous because Salem as a rescue animal is more skittish than I would think is normal and I could picture him jumping out of the carrier and running. I was so wrong. Both the vet and the assistants handled him so well and had really great teamwork in knowing how to position him, hold him and when to move him. The vet asked me a lot of thorough questions regarding his habits, his food, water in take, bathroom habits and general interests. She went over what he should be eating, what was normal behavior, signs to look out for. Very helpful and I never for one second felt rushed. When I left the receptionist was very interested in seeing how handsome Salem is and I just had a general feeling of the love everyone there had for animals - a feeling that you don't get in every vet office unfortunately. I was even more shocked when I paid - an emergency office visit, multiple xrays and food was more than reasonable. My pets are part of my family and it is hard when taking them to some vets can break the bank. I also called with some health concerns regarding my bunny not drinking. The tech took down my information and the same vet that saw us called me back within I would say twenty minutes. Although it was not an office visit and I was just expressing some concerns over the phone I was not rushed and I was given some very helpful information. Most vets automatically tell you that they need to be seen immediately no matter what, but the people at Putnam seemed very tuned in to how stressed rabbits can be traveling and asked questions to see if this was an emergency case. I look forward to Salem receiving his care at Putnam because I really was very impressed with every aspect of my dealings with them. Great people and great with animals!! read more

We came to Putnam Vet Clinic under the worst possible circumstances, being on vacation and having our beloved pet fall ill. Our boxer had been diagnosed with a heart condition about 6 months prior and we knew that we had limited time with him, so we took him on vacation with us. Bear fell ill while we were traveling and we found the nearest vet clinic, which happened to be Putnam. Even though we were not established clients and they could not do anything to save our boy upon our arrival, they were incredible. In our time of grief, they were patient and supportive, allowing us to say goodbye in our own time and putting us in contact with a pet crematorium. Upon arriving home from our vacation, without our beloved pet, we found a beautiful sympathy card with his paw prints enclosed. If the staff at Putnam treated strangers so lovingly, I can't imagine anyone in the area taking their beloved pet to any other veterinary practice. 5 stars all the way. read more

When my dog became anxious during a vaccination--a new vet tech had entered the room, startling my dog--Dr. I made sure to wait until my dog had calmed down to give the vaccination, so she wouldn't have a bad association. She was very clear about what she was doing and explained it all to us as well as explaining to us how to care for Rudy at home. So happy to have found these guys. I thought they were pricey but when I checked around (and even looked at the Petco shots) the difference was negligible. I would rather have someone who knows and cares for my pet on a personal level rather than saving just a couple of bucks. Mind you if the difference were greater I may sacrifice the personal touch ;). They were great through the euthanization of my two older (20 years old) cats (after caring for them through illness) and they are great with my 5 year old Maltese who has allergy issues. read more

They've helped us through the death of two cats and a dog (all at happy old ages), and though each death was different, their doctors were supportive and caring throughout. Both me and Missy Bun Bun had a great visit. I had taken Missy to two other vets, but neither did a very thorough job. One checked out her mouth, while the other didn't and the mouth-checker didn't pay any attention to where she had been licking herself. Dr Wendy and the Vet Tech were fantastic!!! Dr Wendy did do a thorough bunny exam. Both Dr Wendy and Vet Tech were very gentle and knew exactly how to handle her. They were patient with me, answered all of my questions. The place was very clean, as was the exam room. The front office people were very nice over the phone and in person. I never felt rushed, it was just an all around great experience. I had my first visit to Putnam Vet last week as my rabbit became ill. I had never been there but the practice came recommended from some other rabbit owners who said the staff and vets were wonderful here, and boy were they right! I called in around 6, close to closing time but the staff said to come in. They saw me immediately and were kind, caring, respectful and concerned for my little bun. It was the end of the night and very close to closing but they were not in a rush and wanted to make sure my bunny got the proper care. They even called me to follow up to make sure my bunny was feeling better. I really can't thank them enough. I will definitely be using them in the future read more

I have chickens and a Rooster and also six ducks... I'm not your typical farmer, as I bring them all to the vet when need be... I'm also not financially secure, but when our pets are sick, we do our best to make sure they are taken care of... yes.... even chickens! I've spent more than a thousand dollars on my Rooster Curly at Putnam and in the end, his bumblefoot was so sever, he had to be euthanized. I'll never forget that boy! A few months back, my hen was attacked by a neighbors dog, and sadly she had to be euthanized as well. I've had my flock for about 4 years now... this weekend I noticed Bree has a pretty sever looking eye infection... I don't know what could have caused it, so I called Putnam to make an appointment. I wanted them to know up front, that I don't get paid till next Thursday and I asked them if they wouldn't mind billing me for this visit. I have never been billed before, always paid my bills same day as the visit. However, I didn't think that Bree could wait till next Thursday as the eye looks pretty bad. I was told NO. They expect payment same day. I had to cancel the appointment and we have another vet we use that makes home visits. Dr. Kay will come tomorrow to help me with Bree, and yes.. he lets us bill him. I will never use Putnam again. Its only about the money apparently, and we all do the best we can, but sometimes, we just don't have it.. Thanks for showing me your true colors today Putnam. I won't forget it. read more
