You'll see the wooden stairs with lots of signs. Currently, it is being repaired so look for the concrete stairs from the grassed area to walk down to the beach. We went specifically for a serene sunrise. Pick a spot, sit anywhere, and I promise you'll shed at least one tear of awe. Listen to waves, gently wash up the sand. There's a cool breeze and the fragrance of fresh ocean. As you soak it all in and reflect on your blessings, all of a sudden you don't think about grieving, work stress, or inconsiderate neighbors. All there is, is peace.

The beach itself features iconic views of the twin Mokulua Islands. On a clear day you can actually see the sandy beaches on Mokulua Islands. The popular Lanikai Pillbox Hike sits right above the neighborhood for amazing panoramic coastal views. Please note: zero amenities exist directly at the beach (no public restrooms, showers, lifeguards, or trash cans). Fortunately, some of the locals have placed trash bins near the beach entry ways. Parking is easily accessible if you don't mind walking. Parking directly on Mokulua Drive and Aalapapa Drive is permanently banned. Visitors typically park at Kailua Beach Park (about 0.8 miles away) and walk or bike over. We found parking on a side road a few blocks away (didn't get towed) and we stayed for several hours.

As I compared sunrise photos captured from another beach yesterday, the images are uniquely different. There is however, one consistent aspect to sunrises....light breaks through darkness. When the sun rises, there's comfort in knowing we get to start fresh everyday. There's relief in knowing we can leave our past burdens behind. There's also a level of excitement to see how the day goes. At this particular beach, from the parking area, you are literally just a few steps away from the shoreline. The sand here isn't as prestine though. There were a few more people enjoying a morning walk at this location compared to North Beach. Lots of open space to pick a spot and be socially distant from others on the beach. Great opportunity to sit and reflect on things while watching the sun warm up and brighten our day. Amy M. and I had never seen the movie. I think now, we will - since we visited the beach where part of the movie was filmed. We parked up at the top where the Halona Blow Hole parking lot is. You can see Sandy Beach from this parking lot/Lookout, as well as the as The Blow Hole and Eternity Beach. The view is awesome! To get to Eternity Beach, you'd have to be careful and walk down a rocky incline. Amy and I were just happy to be together and enjoy the scenery and cool breeze! The beach itself looks safe. There were many people hanging out and a few were swimming in the clear, clean water! I would return again to show Hawaii's natural beauty to another friend or visitor to Oahu. It's an excellent vacation destination!

The beach itself is beautiful, but getting there is a bit of a production. Traffic on this stretch can really back up and parking is very limited, so be prepared to circle around or wait for a spot. Crossing the road also needs some care. Once we got there though, totally worth it. N and I even got a picture with both turtles in the background, which made me very happy. Not necessarily a beach I would spend the whole day at, but absolutely worth a stop if you are on the North Shore and want to see honu in the wild. 5 stars for the turtles. Parking... not so much.

There were turtles of all sizes making their way from the ocean to the rocky shoreline, where they grazed on the sea grass growing in the tide pools. Honu are culturally significant in Hawaii and are revered as symbols of longevity, peace, and good fortune. Adult Hawaiian green sea turtles can grow up to 4 feet long and weigh between 300 and 400 pounds. It was incredible to watch these beautiful animals surface for air before returning to feast on the sea grass. Everyone around us was respectful, giving the turtles plenty of space while still allowing visitors ample opportunities to observe and take photos. Within just 15 minutes, we saw approximately 10 turtles come ashore to feed - it was truly an amazing wildlife experience. On the opposite end of the beach, there is a protected area where sea turtles often bask in the sun. Please be sure to stay outside the marked red rope barriers and follow the posted signs to help protect these incredible animals and their habitat. Our only disappointment was an interaction with one of the staff members monitoring the protected area. We observed him speak sharply to an elderly visitor who accidentally brushed the red rope with her foot. Later, when our 6-year-old son politely asked whether the turtles were laying eggs, the response felt unnecessarily stern. While the information provided was helpful (e.g., that sea turtles do not nest on this beach), it would have been appreciated if it had been shared in a friendlier, more welcoming manner, especially with a curious child. That interaction aside, we had a wonderful visit and highly recommend Laniakea Beach to anyone visiting Oahu. Just be prepared for limited parking, as the small dirt lot across the road fills quickly, and expect some traffic during peak hours. If you're hoping to see Hawaiian green sea turtles in their natural habitat while respectfully observing from a distance, this is an incredible place to visit.

I had the hesitation to book it due to the fact my son is on the spectrum and wasn't sure how he was going to react during the experience. Took the chance and made a reservation through Hawaii Ocean Sports. They took us on a boat to access the beautiful Sandbar. It's nestled in the middle of the ocean 3 miles stretch of sand. Unfortunately, we ended up doing the afternoon tour where high tides took place water level up to our necks. During our ride there, we were served lunch consisting of a turkey sandwich, fruits, and a cookie. Very filling as we were on to our destination while we listened to live music entertaining us along the way. Snacks, towels, drinks, and a bar are available for additional cost. As we approached the Sandbar, we were required to do a brief safety class before heading into the beautiful water. My kids and I were surprised how magnificent the Sandbar was. Definitely a true paradise where our dreams came true. I didn't think I would ever experience this kind of beauty. My son and I were terrified at first as we entered the water, but our life jackets saved us as we were floating. Lots of activities offered which are part of the package including SUP, kayaking, volleyball, snorkeling, or relaxing at the dock while sipping on drinks. We mainly enjoyed ourselves floating in the ocean. The current did get a little rough as it started to pour rain right before heading back to the marina. One advice is to head out early onto the boat before everyone does because the changing and bathrooms can get wet with dirty grounds. Music was blasting with great hits as we ended the day. Made my son and I stand up desiring to dance. Truly this is an unforgettable magical experience. You bet I will make a reservation again when we return to Oahu next year!

Hale Koa Beach inside the Marine Corps Base is absolutely amazing!…read more Originally we planned to go to the "secret beach" inside this base, but it was so secret that we couldn't really figure out how to get there. However, Google Maps does a better job of pointing to Hale Koa Beach so we decided to go there instead. Please note that you do have to cross an airfield to get to this beach which was a little interesting. Once you get to the beach you find a few picnic tables and a few porta potties. The beach is absolutely stunning and perfect for children. The water is crystal clear and very shallow which makes it perfect for the little ones. You also get some stunning views of a mountain range in the back. I also noticed a couple of people snorkeling and paddle boarding, which looked very fun. Highly recommend checking this base out during your next trip to Oahu!

It is also far enough that there aren't many tourists, and there's plenty of parking and even a small playground for kids. However the bathrooms at this beach seem to be under renovation and are not the best, so just beware. I highly recommend coming prepared with chairs and snacks, since there's not much around this area. Also, the waves here can get very rough which is not ideal for small children so beware of that. However, we had an amazing time building sand castles and just playing with the sand. I recommend coming here just for a few hours and then moving to another beach.

Waimanolo is a bit further south from Lanikai and is every bit as gorgeous and even more secluded!! Same dreamy waters, blue skies, low hanging clouds, and soft sands.... Without the chaotic parking and with less crowds. It was pretty easy for us to find street parking here and it really felt like the entire beach was ours.
