Very sad to have to downgrade my rating a bit based on my most recent visit. Just like the previous visit, they were out of bulgogi. Technically they had one left and we let our friend have it, but close enough. We ordered the galbi again. The meat is still very good, and probably the best thing about the restaurant. If I were only rating the galbi, it would be a 5. However, I had issues with both the banchan and the tea this year, and very slow service. The tea we got served first was barely tea. We couldn't tell by looking at it if it had ever seen a tea bag or just waved at one in passing, and due to the unfortunate language barrier, it was hard to explain to the server what the problem was. I like my tea strong, but at least to be able to see it and taste it. She eventually brought us more, and it was still fairly weak but this time there was a tea bag in there so we let it steep awhile. What it was though was nuclear heat wise; even after letting it steep awhile I burned my tongue. Yikes. The banchan were very lackluster. The cabbage kimchi was very standard but not standout, but the others ranged from mediocre to blah. There were underseasoned cucumbers, lightly boiled broccoli with a drizzle of (I kid you not) thousand island dressing, and mostly tasteless black beans. No radish, bean sprouts, fish cake, seaweed or other staple banchan. When we arrived, it was 5:30 pm and no other customers were present. Despite that, it took several minutes for them to come out of the back to greet us, and after we ordered a very long time to get food and tea (which we had to return...) As someone who lives in an area with plentiful Korean food, and who has learned to cook a lot of it in recent years, aside from the galbi it really was just "ok" and will probably fall out of our rotation when visiting the area. read more

This is the only Korean place in Niagara Falls and it's recently reopened as of July 1st after a long break during COVID. I love the simple and humble vibe here -- the interior is nice and updated and there's a beer/wine/soju menu as well. I ended up ordering take out. At first, the women didn't want to take my takeout order and insisted I come in to order, but after some reassurance that I wouldn't not show up, she was happy to take my order. I got the Kimchee Soup (#3 - 14.99) and the Bibimbap (#13 - 15.99). The Kimchee soup was delicious and served with pork and rice and lots of kimchee. It had a delightful kick to the broth and was very tasty. The Bibimbap was pretty good with an egg over the top and a bunch of vegetables. I though the price was a little high for the portion, but ultimately it's downtown Niagara Falls which is fairly touristy and I want to support the only Korean restaurant. It's off the busy strip and in the middle of nowhere, but I definitely recommend you come here and at least try the Kimchee soup and more of their menu, whether you're a local or just visiting the Falls. read more

My family and I were in town for a trip to Niagara Falls State Park, and found food to be a bit of a struggle here. Besides food trucks and tourist traps like the Rainforest Cafe, there weren't many options to choose from, especially within walking distance. We gravitate towards Asian food, so despite the low-ish reviews we decided to stop in since it was one of the only options nearby. Pyung Taik is cash only and closes relatively early at 7PM, so go early! We stopped in around 6:00PM and that was more than enough time to order, eat, and pay. It is a very humble establishment with minimal decor, seating, and not too many menu options; however, they have all of the classics and everything we ordered tasted wonderfully homemade. We ordered the seafood pancake, hot stone bibimbap, soft tofu soup, and bulgogi hot pot. All were pretty good, especially the seafood pancake and soft tofu soup--really flavorful and much better than the average Korean homestyle restaurant! Everything comes with banchan as well, and the owner often came by to ask if we wanted refills. Price was a bit higher than other local options, but I'd say compared to other places that were open at the moment and quality, it wasn't bad at all. Most dishes ranged from $12-20 USD, with the larger portion options around $30-40 (probably able to feed 3-4 people). I hope more people stop in to support! Their opening hour is weird, from 12:30 pm to 6pm, you must pay attention to the open/close sign in front of the store. Let's talk about food! I think this is the only Korean tofu soup restaurant you can find in the Niagara Falls area. We tried their tofu soup, bulgogi, and pancake. For tofu soup, I will say it is kinda expensive, but you have no choice in this area, so you have to accept this price. It is not too spicy, but do not expect it super delicious, just ok. For pancake, it is kinda wet (not super dry or crispy), but it is ok. Bulgogi kinda upsets me, it comes with carrot and green pepper, very wet (not juicy). Tasted ok as well. It was a nice dinner when I went in. Although pricey, I like how it felt authentic. I got the bolgi or whatever it was called and it was well worth it. I did share this entree, there was no way I could eat all of it myself. The meat was sweet and savory. The side dishes aren't really side dishes, I would say they are more of flavor enhancer's. Even though it was one dish, pairing it with different side dishes in the bite have new and interesting taste. I will be going here again. My only complaint is how dingy and dirty it is in there. BRING CASH!!! Now that we have that out of the way (no cards accepted) lets talk about the food. This was good old Seoul food! OK - I couldn't resist. But the food here is more home-cooking than restaurant style. You'll find many of your Korean favorites here - Bulgogi, Japchae, Donkatsu, Braised Short Ribs - and all very, very good judging by the enthusiasm of our fellow diners. We had the Scallion and Seafood Pancake and the Dol Sot (Bibimbap in a hot stone bowl). Both were flavorful and the pancake had actual pieces of identifiable seafood in it. We have had Korean everywhere in the US, in China and in Korea... this stands up to any of those, but with a definite "home" vibe. I have seen a couple of reviews carping about the portions. Its not "All-you-can-eat-Shrimp-Night" at the Golden Corral, but we were stuffed when we left and (regretfully) left a few bites behind. The kimchi (all of them!) were good, although I think they intentionally held back on the gochugaru - the Korean fiery red chili powder that gives Korean food a lot of its heat - so as not to melt out tender-tongued Canadians and Americans. They came around twice to offer to replenish our kimchi, which we gladly accepted, especially the radish and the cabbage varieties. Let's be clear - this is a modest establishment. If you are coming for the atmosphere - don't. If you are looking for over-the-top "HI! My name is Heather and I'll be your server today!!!" bubbliness, this is not your place. The waiters are polite and helpful but restrained and not fawning. The food is good and filling, but not fussy. This is a great place to get really good food. Man, this is like a small ajumma restaurant you'd imagine in Korea except the space is a bit bigger and spacious with the food being made by an ahjussi. He's the sole cook and owner! His English is pretty good and he even brought out our food :) The ban chan was okay. Broccoli and bean sprouts clean and simple, radish slightly acidic sweet, beans interesting. The kimchi is the highlight. It's not fresh kimchi so it's not crisp but still has some bite with the flavorful mixture seeped deep into the leaves and body of the cabbage. The ahjussi was nice enough to check up on us and ask if we wanted more ban chan and despite declining, he still gave us another saucer of kimchi. That was really nice. The urge to call him samchon (uncle) was strong haha. We ordered the PYUNG TAIK JUNGOL. It serves three people and has beef, rice cakes, shrimp, oyster, squid, mussel, udon noodles, zucchini, scallions, and bean sprouts in a spicy broth. Arrived faster than expected. Despite the broth tasting essentially like an upgraded Shin ramen that's sweet thanks to the seafood and vegetables, that didn't deter from my enjoyment of it. It's satisfying. Sweet, salty, slightly spicy. Realy hit the spot on a below freezing day! I'll admit it was smaller and proportionally less than expected (aside from the shrimp, there were only a few small pieces of the rest of the seafood). And it's quite overpriced at $50. Really the overall menu is overpriced. However, this is a small business and that is felt from the interior to the service, from the ahjussi to the young likely family member who set our table and took our order. It's a different tone from other places that's not bad at all. A traditional, humbling, simplistic no fuss vibe. That respectful yet caring distance in manner found in eateries run by Korean ajummas but in this case an ahjussi. It's honest and direct. You leave feeling indirectly taken cared of. Considering this is likely the only Korean restaurant in the city and assuming business must be slow this season with Korean/Chinese tourists waiting till summer to visit, business must be really tough. To think ahjussi is the only cook! And he runs everything! I can't imagine the stress of having only a few customers in the winter or of handling a large volume of tourists in the summer. In that regard, I respect him and can understand why the menu is overpriced. Being the only Korean restaurant in the area, why not take advantage of that? Note: the night we came, it was an hour and a half before closing and on that day they only accepted cash. But there is free wifi. With a 3.5 star rating, I would absolutely come back to try everything else on their gratefully small menu and let me tell you, that photo album of dishes really helps in the decision process. I'm genuinely curious if there's a specialty of ahjussi's in there. Besides, I would be sad if this place ever closed. So please give Pyung Taik a chance! read more

We took in Pyung Taik when looking for ethnic food. This was closest to our hotel and I am really glad for that, too. The food was simply fantastic. The service was also great. It felt like I was visiting the home of a friend for dinner. The food was some of the best Korean I've ever had. In fact, I wish that Pyung Taik was in my town because it would be great to get such good Korean any time. There is one downside, though. It's cash only. And I totally get that -- it's a small business and small businesses operate on such thin margins that taking credit cards can put them in the red. But tracking down an ATM in that neighborhood after dark was not something I ever wanted to cross off my bucket list. That said, I am glad I went and grabbed some cash. Without a doubt this is the only place even worth mentioning in Niagara Falls (aside from the falls, of course). Like one of the other reviewers stated the kid was set up with a TV watching cartoons while we had dinner. But you know what, I kinda liked it... it was like being invited into someone's home and having them cook for you. The owner even brought out a photobook for us to look at while we waited. It was all pictures he had taken of the falls. It was really sweet. As for the food - nice array of banchan (sp?). For entrees I had the bulgogi and my girlfriend had the sundubu. Hers came out without an egg for some reason and when she asked for it the owner gladly cracked an egg in there and exclaimed "you must be Korean!" Cool place, good people. What an unexpected and very nice surprise! On Niagara Street, just two blocks from the main tourist area, is this small, unassuming building. The interior belies the delicious food to come. The owner, Tae Kim, is a warm and sincere guy that loves the business he is in. With several years of experience in restaurant management, he recognized the potential in taking over this restaurant and doing it right. After reorganizing the kitchen, he introduced himself to the local business community going door to door. He officially opened in the fall of 2014. The food was delicious! (I apologize in advance that I didn't take pictures or make notes over dinner) While we were waiting for our meal, we were treated to a slice of egg dipped, lightly fried tofu. Then we were presented with 7 or 8 little small tastings, like kimchi, a fermented egg, a type of mashed potato, fermented bean sprouts, fermented pickle slices (thick) topped with kimchi. A propane burner was set on the table the the main meal was placed on it to continue cooking and then to stay warm. This allowed us to really savor the aroma which enhanced the flavors and overall dining experience. The main meal was a beef soup/stew in a light but flavorful broth. It had dumplings, sliced rice cakes, thick rice noodles and tofu and plenty of meat. Again, the new owner was so happy to have us there and treated us well. We enjoyed the experience and will return. I am not a snobby food critic nor do I specialize in Korean food. I like to check out restaurants and try new food. Great food at a great price. I came here after wandering the city and checking out the falls. When I walked in I was greeted by a man (who I assume was the owner) and his son. They were very nice. I ordered a number 5 (I don't have the name of the dish ). Before my entree came out I was served small 6 dishes of kimchi which were all very tasty. My soup came out a few moments later. It was a huge bowl, full of flavor and just the right amount of "kick" for my liking. For $15 I left with a full stomach and a smile on my face. I would recommend this any day of the week. What a nice surprise. Tucked in a nondescript building across from the Seneca Niagara Casino parking ramp, before walking in the door nothing tells you what a nice place this really is. While he furnishings are not new, everything looks spic and span and the lovely aroma of fresh cooked meals hit you in the nose. The manager Kim greeted me and answered all my question about the menu. The menu is keyed to a flip book of photos to explain each of offerings. After learning a bit I opted for the Soft Tofu Soup wanting just a light lunch. As I waited, Kim served me the sides. OMG! Eight sides, including black bean, mashed potato w/ prune(?). pickled egg, marinated celery, broccoli, kimchi shredded cabbage & kimshi napa cabbage. Also served was a raw egg to mix in the hot and spicy soup ala' egg drop soup if one feels there is too much kick to the soup. The soup itself was served boiling hot in a cast iron crock with a spicy red broth made near stew like with the tofu, transparent noodles, and bits of clam, squid and probably a few other things I'm leaving out. It was very good, not overly spice (even without the egg drop). Hearty and filling. You will n to leave hungry, that's for sure. I highly recommend Pyung Taik and Korean cuisine to anyone who enjoys Asian food, especially spicy Thai and Vietnamese counterparts. I will visit again and again with friends and family.
