I just want to say the the chicken corn soup did have a smell, and I did not like that it is an automatic service charge but I do understand it is a small restaurant and times are tough, the owner was a super nice guy he was always attentive and refilling our water. We got the chilli chicken, chicken corn soup, schezuan fried drive, chicken pakora, Schezuan shrimp. I'll be very honest it is no where near Frederick, but for a place in Vaughn I would say it is pretty good, the fried rice was tasty had a good spice to it, the chilli chicken was very tasty and crispy, I still think Federick taste better and is a better deal but for a small restaurant not and for Hakka food. The chicken pakora with the green sauce was very good also may be they should double check the plates to make sure they're not broken cuz my mom noticed that. The family favourite ended up being the veg pakora. It was perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful on the inside, with a nice little kick from the green sauce. The canto chow mein had everything: crispy noodles, umami sauce, assorted seafood, chicken, beef, and veg. The dried chili chicken was super crispy with a nice kick and the meat inside was so juicy. The crispy ginger beef was surprisingly better than we expected. It was crispy and tasted sweet which was so nicely balanced. Chili shrimp in the gravy was good but it was more gravy and not enough shrimp that I wouldn't reccomend this one, lol. Hakka chicken chow mein was just okay for us. The dish size and portions are pretty small. Each dish portion is enough only for just one person, but thankfully we just ordered enough to share and satisfy us. They gave us the take out menu to order from that was just a generic list of all their dishes. There were no descriptions or pictures for what's in each dish, which made it difficult for my in-laws to know what to order. The pakora was our fave dish, but had my BIL not ordered that, none us would have thought to order it simply cause we didn't know what it was. When my MIL asked in hakka what she suggests we try, we didnt get much and still had to depend on other reviews online to know what to order, lol. My wife and I read some great reviews of this restaurant and since it was dinner time and we were right around the corner we decided to give it a try. First off, it was -9 outside and we don't think they are heating the place other than from the open kitchen cookstove. There was a space heater on a table behind me and I had to point it at my back to keep from shivering. And I'm a big guy who's usually too warm. My wife had to wear her parka and get a blanket out of the car. But we wanted to try the place. No one else was dining while we were there. Anyhow, our waitress was very friendly and helpful with the menu. We ordered the following: Veg Spring Rolls (these were nothing special) Chicken Pakoras (these were 10/10) tender, very flavourful and a little spice kick. But they may be able to amp up the heat if you ask) Chicken Wonton Soup (skip, flavourless broth and flavourless wontons) Crispy Ginger Beef (10/10 - it's a personal favourite of mine but seems to be disappearing from menus - my wife usually doesn't care for it, she ate most of it and declared it her favourite dish) I agree! Chili Chicken in Gravy (5/10) neither the chicken nor the gravy had much flavour. Disappointing because it seems to be one of their signature dishes. Beef Fried Rice (8/10 it was a good fried rice with more beef than you usually find in a fried rice. And a couple Diet Cokes - they were ice cold (no surprise!) Overall, I'd give them another chance and switch out some of the dishes we didn't care for for some different ones. The Pakoras and Crispy Ginger Beef were that good. I was looking for some Thai restaurant near home and found this place on yelp. This canteen style restaurant in general provided average quality of food. It was a 3.5 star experience. I tried their green curry with chicken and pineapple fried rice. The curry sauce was a bit watery, and not enough sauce. It was more spicy than green curries at many other Thai restaurants. The chicken tasted tender. The fired rice offered super large portion of rice but not enough veggies and pineapples. The taste was mediocre. I would probably revisit this place when I don't want to cook and want to eat something easy. read more

I have to say I am quite pleasantly surprised by this place (in a good way)! This restaurant is located around the York University (steeles and keele) area, and this is not exactly an area teeming with lots of easily accessible good eats. I would imagine you only go to this area to eat because you work in the area, or you make a special trip to a restaurant in this area which is what we did tonight. There are not really any residential areas nearby or other places you can go to (supermarket for example), but we were in the area (Ikea) and found this place through Yelp. We arrived around 6:30 on a Friday evening and was very pleasantly greeted. This location is nice and clean and actually REALLY easy to find. When driving along Steeles, just look for the hugeee neon flashing sign in a plaza. Yup thats Royal Jade. Did I mention that the people that served us was super nice? Yup just saying it again. My wife and I ordered 3 dishes and a drink. The Nasi Gorang was tasty and full of good stuff (lots of fried egg, shrimp and meat). They definitely did not skimp out on the "good stuff" in this dish, though it was not exceptional. I dont mind getting it again, but I would rather try something else on the menu next time. What stood out more was everything else. The crispy beef was actually super tasty and the consistency was excellent. We have been to other restaurants and ordered "crispy" beef before and only ended up getting "soggy" beef. For this dish, it felt like this restaurant fried and prepared the beef first, then tossed it into the sauce and gave it a quick stir around. This allowed the beef to remain nice and crispy, but at the same time nicely coated. Other restaurants I assume either do the same thing but cook it in the sauce too long - therefore making it soggy. Or just toss it all in together and cook it up and call it "crispy" beef but its not. This place is actually really "crispy" beef and they get it right. The chicken pakoras were excellent here. We have been to a few Hakka style restaurants (Lin garden being the one we end up going back to the most) because they have good pakoras with lots of heat. Royal jade makes their pakoras with lots of meat and very little breading. Basically when you bite into the pakora its crispy, yet remains very juicy with the chicken inside. Lin Garden tends to have a LOT of breading to make their pakoras "look" big but they arent really. And usually lin garden you can get about maybe 6 "large" pakoras for much more then Royal Jade. Royal jade pakoras are a better deal quantity wise, and taste wise. My wife especially enjoyed the green cilantro/parsley sauce on the side with the pakoras. The pakoras were nice, juicy and carried a bit of heat. The contrast in flavors by dipping it in the cilantro/parsley sauce is really unique tasting and addictive we had to ask for a second helping of sauce. I also got "lassi" (sweet flavored) on the side. This reminded me of sweetened kefir if you have had it before. This definitely helped me keep my food down as some of it really packed a kick of heat! Having some dairy to reduce the heat helped! All in all, I would definitely come back again to try a few more dishes. This place is a bit out of the way and is a bit of a hike to get to, but honestly so is Lin Garden for us. Im looking forward to my next visit and would definitely recommend this place as a worthy try. read more

Found this gem by accident, we were craving for lobster and was disappointed to learn that Wah Sang was closed down. We stumbled upon Royal Jade- and are we glad we did. Chicken pakoras were huge and juicy, very flavour ful. It comes with coriander chutney that provides a refreshing balance to the spice. Chili Chicken dry was the best among others we've tried. We were also very pleased with the mango lassi. One thing worth mentioning is that this place is very clean compared other Hakka places. We will definitely be back, this is my new favourite Hakka place. read more

The place came recommended from a fellow yelper and I finally made it here. Started with the fish pakora and then the Royal Jade soup. The fish pakora was fantastic but the soup I wasn't too crazy about. Having come a ways to get here, I had to sample a bunch of dishes. Had some Chow Main, some fish fish, a rice dish and a beef and broccoli dish. All were decent, but to be fair, I missed some of the distinct flavors I have enjoyed at other places before and expected to have here. Drove by a lot so I thought I would give it a try. Ordered chilli chicken lunch special and crispy ginger sesame beef. I saw online that some reviewers were able to get gravy on the side for their chilli chicken so I asked about this. The lady said it's a $5 charge... for a side of gravy... no thanks. I was just down the street so I went in about 5 minutes after I called and the food was ready. Not a good sign. The chicken was fine but didn't taste very good. The soup that they gave was so salty that I thought it was the $5 gravy that I declined. The beef was disgusting - very old and tough beef that they probably had sitting for a week and reheated at the time of order. The picture doesn't do it justice. read more

Amazing Hakka food with generous portions! I loved the chicken lollipop which was hot and crispy. The Manchurian fried rice was delicious as well - not too spicy yet full of flavour. The service is friendly and attentive. The restaurant was not very busy on a Sunday night. While the restaurant is decently renovated, the restaurant has questionable signs to prevent theft, which makes the restaurant feel less safe. read more

My new Fav Hakka restaurant. This place is located in a plaza and has a very nice decor. Owners are super nice and welcoming. We ordered home style dumplings and fish pakora to start. Dumplings were mind blowing and Fish pakora was just fine. I wish they would have used more fish and less better and this is the only reason I gave them 4 stars. In main course we ordered Munchurian chicken, Munchurian chowmein and chilli fish. Everything was just perfect. It's a great place if you like Indian hakka, definitely try them out. Decided to give this place a go as it is closer than Golden Asian. Hubby ran out to take out for us. Manchow soup was more of an egg-drop/pea/carrot type soup with lashings of white pepper. It was OK but not spectacular. The Manchurian-Hakka noodles were OK, had a good bit of "wok-hay" but greasy as heck. The Manchurian chicken was edible not the best I have ever had and appeared to have been breaded/deep fried. I still prefer Bombay chicken with the wicked dry seasoning. It seems as though they are altering the spice levels for the ... er ... local palate. I wish the flavours had been bolder and more out there like what we've had at the other place. I came here after reading rave reviews on the restaurant, and I always drive by here whenever I head off to work in the mornings. I came here with my dad on a Saturday evening, and to my surprise, it was quite empty. I think it might be because it's a fairly new establishment, but I'm not complaining that I got seated quite quickly. My dad and I ordered the Manchurian chicken, the hakka chow mein and the royal jade house special soup. We got the medium sized soup and found that it could serve both of us 2-3 bowls each. The soup has a strong spice to it, a lot more than expected. But it was still delicious! The taste of the hakka chow mein reminds me a lot of beef ho fun. The portion was quite huge, and my dad and I had to pack it home since we could not finish. The best dish would be the manchurian chicken. It took a while for it to come out, but after tasting the sauce I realized it was definitely worth the wait!! It goes great with steamed rice and again, portions are quite large. The service was definitely on point, and it's a very clean establishment. I am definitely coming back here again to try out more food! read more

The pad thai was very inauthentic. I think it was just the noodles fried up with some generic pad thai sauce. I wouldn't recommend it. We ordered mango salad and the mango is over-ripe to the point where it was very soft. Once again, very inauthentic Thai and not very tasty. I have the sweet and sour pineapple chicken which will good and I would recommend that. We also had the Manchurian beef and it was just okay. Royal Jade is a new addition to the list of Hakka restaurants in the city as its been opened since November 2017. I've been to many Hakka restaurants in my time,but I must say Royal Jade is among the winner! Sorry Federick, Good Luck, Tangerine, Lin Garden but this place does it better. Though its not close to home being located on Steeles Ave between Dufferin and Keele, it's worth the drive. The restaurant is clean, their portions are sufficient, prices are reasonable and the staff are attentive and personable. So far this is the closest most authentic Hakka restaurant I've experienced to this day. Unlike the other places that use a lot of corn starch in their food, Royal Jade focuses on pure, flavorful authenticity. In terms of food we had their: Chicken Pakora Chicken Hakka chow mein Sweet Hakka chow mein Royal Jade House Soup Chili Chicken Crispy Beef Fish with red wine sauce. All of which was an easy 5/5!! Great atmosphere, clean and well kept restaurant, delicious food, and to top it all off....the world's most courteous, polite, and friendly owner (or I think he was the owner). We ordered chicken Manchurian, and Manchurian Hakka noodles....both were delicious and worth ordering again. We also ordered fish pakora appetizer, it was different from what we were expecting, but good in its own right. What a hidden gem! A group of friends and I decided to give this place a try after church recently and was happy as we did for the nice service of the family owned restaurant matched up with the lovely food. From everything we ordered (check out pictures!) must gets are: Deep fried Cauliflower- they were exceptionally packed with flavor and oh so crispy and was the major surprise of our whole group as we didn't think that it could be so yummy! Crispy Ginger Beef as well as the Chicken Pakora were also favorites. Along with the Garlic Sauce Eggplant if we had to choose a 4th runner up. The Manchurian Fried Rice and Hakka Noodles were a bit of a let down for us as we expected more flavor. All in all what we learned was that we shouldn't have ordered rice or noodles as each dish you order comes with steamed rice. The big led sign board outside the restautant caught our attention. Upon entering we found out that the place has been opened for 3 months only. Everything is neat and the cutulary were shinning. We ordered the house special soup, chicken pakora, lollipop chicken, chilli chicken, green beans, butter chicken . The house special soup was nice with a little kick spicy hot from the white pepper. Although I have not dined inside the restaurant, I have ordered take-out on two occasions. There is a fish tank in one corner of the restaurant and it's not exactly clean. I've never understood that about restaurants with fish tanks in them; you're serving food, ensure your fish tank is clean so it doesn't gross people out. Otherwise the restaurant is generally clean. I've seen this place really busy ordering take out, and so it begs the questions, how is the food? I usually make big orders and I can say I'm not disappointed by the food, but it's hard to blow someone away when it comes to Hakka takeout. Without dining in, I can't give a fair assessment to the service but generally over the phone and cashing out, the staff have been pleasant and friendly. In the end, if you're ordering Hakka-Chinese, you're getting what you ordered and it's actually quite good. You might enjoy eating it more at home, or maybe at a park than in the restaurant. read more

Dropped into RJ's for lunch. Parking was available but limited due to the cars parked for the other businesses. Walked in, the place was bright and well decorated, clean and pleasant to sit and order. Looked over the lunch specials and decided that it would be best to order the dinner size to share as the lunch plate looked good but I was extra hungry and wanted a larger serving. We decided on the Szechuan chicken and Hakka noodles, both showed spicy and I was looking forward to it as it, It's been a while since my last Hakka fix. Pricing was fair and plate size was perfect for 2 to 3 (on its own). To my surprise we also received a bowl of soup, can't remember the name of it (see pic) was slightly spicy and the flavor was quite good. Once soup was done they brought us the noodles, looked great and tasted even better and the chicken followed, it was not spicy at all (for my taste) however it was very flavorful and tasty. I can't believe I liked it without any spice....if this is an example of the type of food this place puts out....all I can say is WOW! I'd say this place is above average, even upscale in terms of their food and flavors. They have it all, clean, nice decor and great food. Called in to make an order for take-out; the process was simple and order was repeated to ensure accuracy. Food was ready within the specified time. We had ordered the Schezuan Shrimp Fried Rice and Chilli Chicken dry, spicy. The quality of the take-out did not stand up to quality offered while eating-in. The chilli chicken was unusually dry and not very spicy not flavourful, and the fried rice was not the best I've had from them. The price was reasonable for the two items ordered however, I have had better experience with similar order in the past with them, while eating-in, and would probably not do a take-out next time. The chili chicken was great, on par with most Hakka places, it's usually quite good or great in my experience. The Manchurian noods were very good as well. I am such a big fan of Hakka food that as soon as I found out there was one nearby my remote office, I literally grabbed my purse and went. As always, my barometer for any new Hakka place is the chili chicken. To me, it is the best apples to apples comparison one can draw. Royal Jade's chili chicken is a good rendition, however, different than I am used to from my 2 other locals. I did find that the chicken pieces were smaller than I would have liked and not as crispy as I expected. Maybe I judge too harshly as I have been spoiled in the Hakka department. The chili chicken did also seem a little less flavourful, and not as spicy as i would have wanted. I really had to juice that baby up with the provided chili vinegar and chili sauce. Again, just my opinion. The portion is exactly what you would expect from a lunch special at a Hakka place and the same price point as well. The restaurant is incredibly clean, well kept and a good size for the lunch crowd. The service is so, so fast! Seriously, I had barely ordered before my food was in front of me. But it was piping hot and fresh. The servers were so friendly. Both greeting me like I was a regular, despite it being my very first visit. This place is incredible. Used to go to Mississauga for hakka food but this place is a million times better. My brother got the chilli chicken for the lunch special and he absolutely loved it. It was well cooked and full bodied flavour. We got the manchurian pakoda and the hakka noodles - absolutely delicious. All of the dishes were incredible and we loved it. Located in a non descript strip mall on the north side of Steeles (so technically in Vaughan), you really have to search this place out. We visited on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and were the only patrons in the restaurant....but I imagine that during the week it would be fairly busy with people from the local businesses. We ordered: 1) Chicken Pekora - flavorful, meaty, mildly spicy....they were excellent. 2) Hakka Chow Mein - spaghetti pasta tossed in spices, with chicken and a few veggies....I thought it was flavorful. Based on other reviews I was expecting something more interesting. Don't get me wrong..I enjoyed it..but the hype wasn't lived up to. 3) Chilli Chicken (dry) - spicy. I usually order this dish in sauce, but my dining companion preferred dry..so I can't compare it to other places I've had chilli chicken. I thought it was flavorful and really enjoyed it. Portion size for all dishes was excellent...we brought food home. I just bout four seperate dishes from this place for the first time, and everything tasted bitter. Terrible bitter aftertaste. Like the oil was not changed for a long time. I love Indian Hakka food. And even though the Hakka food in Toronto isn't really authentic Chinese Hakka food, its still pretty damn good. Royal Jade is definitely one of the better Hakka, if not best, Hakka joints north of the city. We've been here many times since they first opened and have always returned to this family run restaurant for their shrimp pakoras with coriander sauce and manchurian fish. The manchurian sauce over rice is to die for. If you love your spice, try their pickled peppers. Yums! The dishes are also priced fairly well. Great addition to the neighbourbood! Parking - free parking in a small plaza Atmosphere - spacious with lots of tables and seatings. Simple decor and friendly service. read more
