I've been coming here for the past four years. The barbers are very detailed and high quality. But two things now have me looking somewhere else. 1) they have increased their prices steeply over the past four years (40-50%) and 2) now the effort required to enter the contact and cc information to book an appt is more than it is worth. At the end of the day, it is just a haircut. Ray is a meticulous barber, you can really tell that he's looking at every detail when he cuts your hair, I've really never experienced such a thorough haircut. He is smart and knows exactly what kind of style will suit you best. I've also never had my hair washed at the end of a cut but it really makes all the difference, I was able to leave the shop and continue about my day without having to go home and shower/change. Walked in without an appointment the first time after walking around looking for a place to cut my hair in my neighborhood. Nice digs. Friendly staff. Absolutely a great experience! As a guy who gets his hair cut once or twice a month and, shall we say, has no idea how to actually style my own hair or make myself look presentable, I thought it was time to try a different barbershop experience than that of the norm. I have been to many highly rated barbershops around Manhattan, most of which don't take appointments and usually charge about $20, and usually find myself decently satisfied with the work. However, I've realized that I can never articulate what I want, so I just keep asking for "shave the sides with a #3, trim the top, I'll make it messy and that's it." Yelp led me to Quality Barbers, which just so happens to be only a few blocks from my home. Great reviews inspired me to spend the $30 they charge for a haircut, which by no means is expensive for this quality of work, and is a true bargain given the attention to detail and the environment. I scheduled an appointment online, and found an available appointment the same day, only a few hours later. I arrived a few minutes early, had a seat on the comfortable couch, and waited for Abraham, whom I had been scheduled with. Abraham gave me some great details about his philosophy, and explained that he has determined to achieve whatever style his client is after, and is always happy to develop a game plan if that style means growing things out and waiting to work on it again, or whatever is necessary. I explained, kind of generally what I wanted, showed him a picture off the internet that I had found that was similar to what I was after, and he went to work. Abraham took the time to explain what he was doing each step of the way, why he was doing it, and even told me about the types of razors and scissors and product he was using. More than anything, I felt like he cared about explaining the entire process, and didn't want to rush me out, even though his next customer had arrived a few minutes early and was waiting. All in all, I am extremely happy with the result. I consider this one of the best haircuts I've had in a long time, and I am really happy with the kind of "homework" I got, understanding how to stye my hair and how to prepare it for the look that I am after. I plan to return in the future for another haircut, and possibly take advantage of the hot towel shave, which seems like a great experience. I strongly recommend Quality Barbers, and if you're looking for a great place on the Upper East Side to go, this is it. I made a appointment the day before and showed up 15 mins prior to my time. This has to be by far the quietest barbershop I have ever been in. That could be good or bad. For me it was very good. Such a peaceful place. Sam was the gentleman's name that cut my hair. I always wanted a New York style low fade. I was extremely pleased with the haircut. First off, the interior is beautifully decorated (doesn't mean much for a men's salon, but wow). Everything in the shop is of the highest quality. Truly top notch stuff. I just moved to New York and have been looking for a place to get my haircut for a while now. Most places seemed to be pretty expensive, or if they weren't, the quality seemed questionable (i.e. $30 for a haircut without scissors). I found this place by total luck--passed by it randomly as I was walking around the UES--and quickly looked it up online. (They have a great website. Very convenient for setting up an appointment; you can do it straight from your computer and get it confirmed almost instantly.) I booked an appointment with Ray, and he did a great job. He has 10+ years experience cutting hair, and it shows; the guy is meticulous. There were a few times when I thought he was going to finish (because my hair looked as good as it's looked in the past--turns out I've been getting bad haircuts for a while...), but he would grab the scissors, and then the straight razor, or the buzzer and tweak things just a little bit until it was exactly what I was looking for. Along the way he made sure I was getting the haircut I wanted as well. Great cut, and for only $30 (excluding tip, which he definitely earned). (I should also say that it comes with a wash--which doesn't seem to be standard for new york places--and the use of Aveda products) EDIT: Just because someone mentioned it in an earlier post, the place seems to now be accepting cards (which is how I paid). read more

This was the first haircut I've paid for in the past five years. Normally I cut my own hair, but I have a wedding coming up and my fiancee and I agreed I should get a professional cut for it. While I may try another barber just to see what's in the neighborhood, this guy was great. The owner was easy to talk to and he did a fine job. With tip it was $30, which is twice what I paid in Kansas City at Great Clips, but my frame of reference is a bit skewed, so I have no idea if that's steep or not. Quality Barbers on 88th is indeed quality. I found this place just recently and have been back 4 time since. Ray provides one of the best value, quality services in the Upper East and I would recommend this salon to anyone. I was paying $75 at a high end salon down town and I can honestly say the attention to detail and quality of cut is higher at Quality Barbers than most others. The store is spotless, Ray and his staff welcoming and friendly and the cut is amazing value for money. Ray, Your response to my review in which you state that I was wrong and misleading about the price increases and offer several explanations was very defensive and dismissed out of hand a legitimate complaint - that you have increased your prices by over 8% a year since opening and it is excessive. It has reached to the point where it where you may be the most expensive barber on the UES. You now cost more than the Paul Mole, the oldest and poshest barbershop around. This was meant both as constructive feedback and to inform other clients so why not listen instead of attacking every critic. You seem like good guys and, as I said, you have a good product but you are risking losing loyal customers over the price hikes. At the very least try to communicate why you guys are raising prices so much. I and others came looking for a solid haircut at a good price and you have built up a large customer base on this premise and feel a bit taken advantage of. I am sorry that you feel that I am complaining because, as you implied in your response, I can no longer afford it. Instead it would be in your best interest to listen to a loyal client that has been there since the beginning.
