I used to think this place was a decent option for a quick, affordable haircut, but the quality has really gone downhill. Even when I bring reference photos and clearly explain what I want, the stylists seem to ignore my requests and do their own thing. It's frustrating and feels like they're not listening to the client at all. The last few visits have been disappointing, and unfortunately, I don't plan on going back. Had my hair massacred by 3 different barbers here. In none of the multiple haircuts I had here has the hair grown in well or naturally, unlike my new barber a 10-minute walk away. The tall, thin, young barber, when it was my time and I was next in line, refused to say hello, and said "what do you need?" For my haircut, he was rushing so hyper-fast, it was like he was working in fast-forward. For another haircut I had here, a short, heavy Latino barber, after making small-talk to me in English, at the end of my haircut, then later made a comment in Spanish to a co-worker and laughed. In fairness, I don't know what he said, but he really couldn't have said it in English, or waited a few minutes to speak in Spanish until I got up out of the barber chair? Rude. It is fantastic that Aaron Judge and Carlos Beltran and other famous people got haircuts here, but if the haircuts are consistently terrible, what does that add up to? This place is all reputation and hype with past celebrity patrons, but it doesn't live up to that reputation. None of the haircuts I had here grew in well within a week or 2 and ended up looking completely out of place and wonky, unlike other barbers in the area. This place is an assembly line and you are one of a lot of customers who are rushed through for sub-par haircuts. read more

The first time I went here the haircut was amazing. I loved it. The second time I went, the haircut wasn't good. The barber kept on talking to people who walked in, he was answering the phone, he walked outside to take a call, was looking at watches people brought for repair, etc. read more

Im giving this place 2 out of 5 stars bc it is so inconsistent. They do NOT know how to cut Asian hair. I've been to this place several times and had various experience with different barbers. My first experience was with a lady who cut my hair to my satisfaction, respecting my suggestions. The other times were with older gentlemen and I had bad experiences. For example, one of the older barber, I gave my feedback on what I thought of the haircut, and it was a polite feedback regarding how he didn't follow the request, and he responded with "if you want, there's a $100 hair shop down the street," and scoffed at me. Even though I had a bad experience, I decided to give it another try due to this place having good reviews and having a good experience previously. This time around I had a different older barber, and gave him instructions on wanting a number 1 or 2 side cut without touching too much on the top while not going too high with the cut on the back. He told me he understood and he needs to blend my cut in. As he was cutting I had a bad feeling because I can feel his buzzer going up high on the back and how high he was going with the side cut. He later showed me the back, and to my suspicion, he went too far up. I gave my feedback that I thought the back was too short up high. His response was "don't worry you'll need a haircut in 2 weeks." I could see thru the mirror that the staff was sneering at his comment. Overall, did not feel good leaving the place and I would not go back, other than as a back up for a haircut. read more

After moving to the UES and bouncing around from one barbershop to the next, I've finally found the one. Shawn (Sean?) is a great guy and is incredibly skilled at what he does! The first time there, I gave him some basic instructions on what I wanted (1 on the sides, high fade) and he took care of the rest. Greatest hair cut I've ever had and better yet, it's consistently perfect every single time. That kind of reliability is why I come back. (Also, you can't beat that it's $17 for a haircut... on the UES! I would gladly pay more.) Word to the wise, don't come during peak hours, aka after work. Weekends are pretty packed, too. Thank god for David's. Just moved here from Chicago and I was getting a great cut for $10 which is unheard of but I was still on the hunt for an affordable but quality cut. I saw David's was right across the street, strolled in 9am on a Saturday, and was surprised to find that there was already a line. Having jet straight spiky Asian hair, I was relieved to see two other guys with similar hair waiting in line. Sean, the man himself, cut my hair and it was a quick but relaxing experience. He knew exactly what I wanted and gave me a pretty crisp, even cut. Haircuts here are $18 which is quite reasonable. So happy to have found my new spot! read more

So I went to David's yesterday for a haircut and hot shave. We'd moved to the UES from the West Side the day before and the reviews looked stellar, esp re COVID protocols. I met Mike, super warm guy, who sent me to Tracy's chair. When it was time for my shave, I asked her politely if she could please put her mask over her nose. I am vaccinated but I have a young child at home. She said: If you are scared of shave you shouldn't get one!! If you are scared, you shouldn't leave house!!(She really does talk in double exclamation points). I gave the experience a chance but she still kept muttering. And a few seconds later, the mask was down to her lips again. I asked her nicely one more time to please wear her mask properly. This time, she barked at me in Russian: Pretty sure it wasn't "You have a nice face." So now, I'm reclined on a chair, a person cursing at me while wielding a straight razor inches from my throat. I decided to cut my losses. Who wants to get Sweeney Todd'ed? I got up, told Mike I would pay for the hair cut and never mind the shave. He guided me to Alex's chair instead with Tracy still yelling "Mask keeps falling down on face, what do you want me to do!!" It's been a whole frikkin year, Tracy. I don't know, maybe get a new mask? Or YouTube "How to Wear Mask Securely." There's like 1.2 million vids on there right now. I told her the other barbers were wearing masks the right way, why couldn't she. Alex gave me a great shave. I paid and left, Tracy shooting daggers at me the whole time. Mike waited outside to apologize for his employee. A shame, because I can see why the place has a loyal following otherwise: great service and relaxing, old neighborhood vibe - other than from you know who. I might go back. My regular barber canceled on me last minute, so I decided to try walk-in at David's. John cut my hair--man of a few words, but boy, he gave me a great hair cut. The shape of my head is odd, so it usually takes a couple of tries with the same barber to get it right, but John knew what he was doing and got it on point the first go round! Highly recommend. Service (3/5): I walked in twice and had the same barber, who was a little lackadaisical both times and rushed through the cut. Cut (3/5): Asked for a simple side fade and trim up top. I find that there are few barbers who can cut Asian hair well and, unfortunately, this seems to remain the case at this barber shop. My hair usually grows back in about three-ish weeks, but it came in uneven starting around week 2 (both times). I want to like this place, but I can't bring myself to. When I moved here from California, I was desperate to find a barber that was not only close by, but understood how to do a fresh fade with stiff, Asian hair. You'd be surprised at how hard it is to find someone who can cut Asian hair well. It took me over 4 tries with different barbers nearby before I was recommended by a friend to go to Shawn at David's Barber Shop. I'm happy to say that trusting Shawn to cut my hair has been one of my best decisions. I've been going to him for over a year now, and when I go in, I know that I can relax and that no matter what, I'll come out looking great. Keep in mind though that this place is cash only, and you can't make an appointment ahead of time. The bottom line is if you're a guy who cares about how you look and want a barber who is attentive and just as invested in your hair as you are, definitely check out Shawn.
