I read the reviews and decided to give Sam a chance. I am absolutely floored at how well my car turned out. He removed the tree sap, fixed some dents, buffed out scratch to keep the cost down, and painted. He told me I wouldn't recognize my car. I walked right past it! Some things to understand before procuring his services: First, voicemail is almost always full, he is a one person shop so he won't be able to answer the phone for most of the day, he might respond to text messages, and finally, he is an honest man who deals in cash. I like the old school vibe. He has very interesting stories ( he was the soap box derby world champ in 1970) and will do his best to work within your budget. It cost me $1200 for a job that was originally quoted for $3200 elsewhere. Sam was very honest with me. My 2009 Ford Focus only has 68k miles on it. The tires are new and the transmission is solid. Sam told me he would keep the car until about 159k miles. He certainly made it easy to do so. I told Sam about his rating on Yelp. He's not an online kinda guy. He said it was nice that people thought he did good work because he always tries to be an honest person. read more

Sam is a Durham legacy. I have been bringing my cars to him for years and he always does great work for a fair price in a timely manner. I had several bumper scrapes and scuffs in my 2013 burgundy Acura RDX. My Christmas and Valentine and Birthday wish was to have them repaired. Save a few spots on one door that he missed due to rain, it looks almost new. Sam agreed to fix the door for me once things dry up. He is a gem and the nicest person. That counts for me!! read more

I took my daughters car to Sam based on a referral from a family member. The work was straight forward, repair a scratch on the passenger side door, repaint and clear coat. Sam also graciously offered to pop a dent out of the bumper and even painted it. The problems started when I arrived to pick the car up. When I arrived to pick the car up, Sam's card reader was not working, so my family member was not able to pay the bill. Sam agreed that a bank check would work and we concluded our transaction. I made a stop at the grocery store 10 minutes after picking up the car and decided to take a picture of the car for my daughter. Imagine my shock and surprise when I discovered a scratch on the DRIVERS side of the car extending from the front quarter panel all the way to the rear passenger door. This damage wasn't present when I dropped the car off, so I immediately returned to the auto shop. Sam was not in, so I immediately notified the payor and had them withhold payment until I received an explanation about the new damage. I caught up with Sam a couple of days later and he had NO IDEA how the car ended up with damage (and he obviously didn't do a full inspection before returning the car). Now you are probably wondering why I didn't see the new damage when I picked the car up. Well, the car was parked in such a way that it was nearly imposssible to see anything on the drivers side (parked very tightly against a brick retaining wall), but the passenger side was easily visible. Sam said he would fix the damage and get back in contact with me. 2 weeks later (after a number of calls and visits to his shop), I was finally able to catch him and get the car back. Unfortunately, the quality of the work he did the second time around was beyond poor. Upon inspection I was able to see spots where the paint was over sprayed, uneven application and even a paint halo on the rear passenger door. Additionally, I'm pretty sure he didn't even bother to wrap the car because it was filthy inside (guessing it was something he used to strip the damaged paint and left the windows open while doing his "work" and even the rear tire had silver paint overspray on it. At this point I felt that his service was not going to improve and even though I was not at all satisfied with his work and lack of accountability, I asked the payor to issue his payment. I thought that our business was done at this point, but I was sadly mistaken. I started receiving texts stating that he had not received payment. I followed up with the payor and was assured that the bank had cut him a check. At this point he demanded that I pay him (despite not even receiving an explanation for the damage that he caused or an explanation for the shoddy work that he performed while cleaning up the damage he caused). I declined and let him know that I would make some calls and try to get him made whole (even though he didn't extend the same courtesy to me). The final communication that I received from Sam contained a threat that he would contact my employer to get payment (not that they would even give him the time of day, but I digress). At this point I sent him a copy of the check request, confirmation number, including his business name, address for payment and most importantly, the date, Oct. 4th, that the draft was made. This information matched everything that we had discussed previously. This pretty much ended his threats and as fate would have it, I received a text from him a day later stating that "the regular mailman finally got back and brought him his mail and the check was in the stack". So in review, Sam caused more damage than the car had when it was brought to him, was dishonest about the cause of the additional damage, attempted to conceal the damage that occurred while the car was in his custody, didn't perform a quality repair on damage he was responsible for and communicated threats to a customer. Never mind the fact that I'm going to have to pay someone else to correct his negligent work on the car. Ratings on my experience - Workmanship on initial damage - 7/10 Workmanship on additional damage - 2/10 Professionalism and Customer Service - 0/10 Honesty - 0/10 Do yourself a favor and seek service elsewhere. His prices are lower than the average shop, but the lack of quality work and professionalism made my experience one that I would like to forget. read more

Sam is the best! I needed work done on short notice. He fit me and gave me a detailed estimate. When I mentioned I had one slightly cheaper, he immediately matched it. It's a one man show, so you might need to call first. But he answers his phone and calls you back quickly. Also email exchange makes things easier. On top of this, when he noticed I had a sensor on my back bumper (newer model car, which is probably why his system put the estimate slightly higher). But he fixed it anyway, and pointed out it may be an issue. It's been working great since! Parts ordered and work was done within 48 hours. Nice guy to chat with, would definitely use again .. but hopefully won't have to Only reason for four star is that my bumper has some kind of fancy sensor to detect passing cars. It has not been working properly, so I would probably have to go to Subaru directly to fix. Can't afford that and don't really use the sensor anyway, so Sam is a great alternative. If you're looking for an auto body shop look no further! I got into an accident and all of the shop through my insurance were going to take 3 months to even get a quote started on my car. I called this shop and Sam was able to take it right away. Throughout the entire process he communicated the steps, and when there were delays due to a part back up he let me know. I rear ended someone and had to pay my deductible of 2k. Not only did Sam save me money, he was super nice the whole time. He even helped me navigate this whole process with insurance since i've never done this before. And while I brought in my car the first time, another lady brought her car in for a scratch. He fixed her car in five minutes and didn't even charge her! Definitely old fashioned - I did all my communication through phone calls. After reading everyone's review I thought I found the place to get my car fixed. I had a neighbor open their door and hit my car making two small but noticeable dents. I was excited to go to this place since everyone had a great experience; unfortunately it didn't work out that way for me. I stopped by and saw a man washing a car outside. I asked him if this was the auto body shop and he said yes it was. I told him that my car had a dent and I wanted an estimate (I can then pass that along to my neighbor so he can pay for it). The man, I never got his name, walked over to my car with a notebook and glanced at it and then asked for my name, phone number, and email. I thought that he must of been really good to just glance at it and know how much and what kind of work it would take (when I saw glance I mean maybe 3 seconds). The man said that he would call/email me with an estimate. I thought I would get an estimate on the spot but that wasn't a problem. A week and a half goes by and still no phone call or email. I called back and told the gentleman that I was there about a week and a half ago and still didn't get an estimate. The man said that he was at a gas station and would take a look when he got back to the shop. I never heard anything back. I guess I'll have to search for another place. She was so upset by the accident - her first. With family 3,000 miles away in California, no one could help her. And she had to pay for repairs out of her own pocket, from money she earned at her summer job. She could have easily been exploited - instead, Sam worked hard to find a reasonably-priced replacement hood at a junk yard and also fixed the headlights, replaced the battery and did other repairs - all at a very reasonable price. I had a relatively minor fix on my bumper and I went to Sam first. He explained to me my cheapest option and quoted $5-$20. I then went to a big auto body shop and they suggested the factory-standard fix option that I could do (quoted at $44 per hour of labor plus the part that needed to be ordered, quoted at $350). I then asked if the cheap option that Sam had suggested would work and they said that would be fine as well but would still cost 2 hours of labor, $88. Makes sense, big auto body shops have a lot of people to pay: receptionists, secretaries, web designers, lawyers, etc. But I went with Sam, who ended up charging me $10. My car had a dent and broken tail light (which I suspect might have had something to do with a new, teenage driver). The first body shop I went to estimated the repair for $2000 and said it would take 2 weeks to fix! I took my car to Quality and could not be more pleased! Sam did a fantastic job--not only with the original dent, but also buffed out other scratches and made my car look spiffy. I met with Sam, showed him what I wanted done, got to chat with him extensively afterward and he confirmed my small paint job was not a problem. Unfortunately, that is where everything died. I never received the written email estimate three days later despite emailing him twice over several days with no response. I have repeatedly called him throughout the day but he has no voice mail and does not answer the phone but exceptionally rarely. Basically, there is no method to communicate other than literally going down to the shop every time. I am not commenting on his work and maybe he is very selective about which customers he picks but the decent thing would be to be honest and tell people up front if he is too busy or he does not work on the car you have or the work is too complicated or whatever reason he chooses to give. Being non-communicative is a sure fire way of losing business, not just the potential customer but future ones by word of mouth. Very odd practices. read more

Summary: Sam did a wonderful job returning my dented/scraped car back to picture perfect condition. And he did it for about 1/3 the price of the first estimate I got. I could not be more satisfied! Plus, he's a remarkably nice guy. The Work I Needed Done: I went to Sam after getting into a minor accident that left my entire driver's side (both doors) dented and scraped. The Result: I couldn't imagine the car looking any better! I would attach a before and after picture if I could. For the price I paid, he's a miracle worker. The Price: The first mechanic I saw (Johnson Body Shop) gave me a $2,200 estimate (which he qualified with "it could end up being more, think about that as the least you're going to have to pay"). Sam did it for about 1/3 that price (and told me from the get-go that, barring any unforeseen complications with the repairs, his estimate would not go up). No-Nonsense, Upfront Estimate Process: Sam explained all of my options (replacement panels, buying scrap parts, working out the dents, etc.) and was honest about their relative costs and benefits. As someone who knows next to nothing about car repair, I was extremely pleased to be given the lay of the land. It was obvious he wasn't trying to trump up the expected costs of the repairs - he even showed me an online database of spare parts along with their sticker prices. Responsive to My Concerns: I was paying out of pocket and wanted the job done as cheaply as possible. Sam understood and explained my options (including what would be the cheapest and most effective). Accessible for Progress Updates: Sam was available to take my calls, and did a good job keeping me updated on his progress. Sam's a Decent, Honest Guy: I look like a sucker and Sam guessed right away that I'm a Duke student (mind you, I am in fact very broke - but Sam had every reason to assume otherwise). Moreover, I had no idea how much body/paint work on a car is supposed to cost. And I was scared and just wanted this problem to go away. Sam easily could have scammed me. He's super friendly and genuine - an honest broker - who was very easy and enjoyable to work with. The plastic piece that covers the engine of my Honda Civic had broken loose and started dragging on the ground, adding friction and making horrible sound. I took it to Sam -- he diagnosed the problem on Wed and gave an estimate (w/ much lower than expected labor cost), ordered and got part by Thurs, and fixed car on Friday. I brought my 98 Civic here to have a headlight and side view mirror replaced. After my initial visit, Sam took longer than I expected to get back to me with an estimate on parts and labor, so I offered to go get the parts myself at the salvage yard. Once I did that, things went very smoothly--he told me to bring my car in the next day, which i did. We have used this place for over 5 years now and I wanted to update our review. Echoing what another review said, I wish there were more people like Sam in this world! Sam is much busier these days, and it's harder to get worked in for a smaller job. We have, unfortunately for us, been back several times for various car body work and have always been very pleased with the results. The last big job was a $3,000+ job on the front of the car from a bad accident on the ice. When we got our car back, I literally threw my arms around Sam, startling him with a big hug. Our insurance paid the bill that time, but it was still an amazing feeling to get your beloved car back in a condition that is just like new. Tip for new customers: be patient as he is busier. Make sure you let him know if there's a deadline that you need the car back. Get his cell number. He can text/call to let you know when the parts are in so that if your car is drivable you can still drive it while you wait for the parts. We owe Sam a lot - back in the lowest part of the recession when we couldn't afford anything, he was the kind soul who helped us get our car back in shape for a price that we could manage. He is one of the best things about downtown Durham and we hope he stays for a long, long time! Sam is a little old fashioned, so I wonder if he will ever read any of these amazing reviews on Yelp. This is an extraordinary body shop. Sam is a magician! I scratched my brand new Corolla and got quotes from different big, well-known chains and became frustrated to see that a minor scratch and a small dent could cost me more than $2K! Sam did it at about 1/3 rd of their initial quotes! He is honest and let you check what's happening with your car anytime. I paid few bucks less than his initial quoting as asked by him during the final billing. He even gave me a lift one day when I had to go there to check the update. Yes, that is the only problem with him. You have to be extremely lucky to get him over phone! This was a real pain! But about his work, I'm more than satisfied! He initially promised me 80% but I can rate his repair ~95% comparable to the original condition. The colour matching was a bit compromised. But I can live happily with that. I had significant bumper damage from being rear-ended on the highway and a dent in my front left side that stopped the driver's door from opening. I stopped in just for an estimate - Sam took a good look at my car and gave a good idea of how bad the damage was. I told him I didn't expect to keep the car longer than 4 more months and he honestly advised the damage might be too great to be worth fixing but it should be safe to drive. Sam seems to selectively choose which jobs to accept and turn down (as in, say he will be happy to do it - and then never reply to repeated calls or email.) As in the other bad reviews, I took my wife's Lexus IS over here which needed $3K worth of work done, with cash in hand - received an estimate from Sam and then never heard from him again. Indicated by the other reviews, some people have a great experience - so your mileage may vary. You might take note of the fact that the building is falling apart - at least half of the glass in the garage doors (which also happen to be falling down) is missing. If you do end up leaving your vehicle over here, you are advised to remove absolutely everything of value. read more
