Is there anything more DC than eating a peach and drinking a single glass of wine for dinner and it totaling $30?
Here's the set up. It's Friday night. My boyfrie--- fiancé--- promised me the luxury of a night off cooking dinner and informed me he would be BBQing a most bountiful and delicious meal. I watched nervously as the clock ticked past 6PM, then 7PM and then it is 8PM and he's still doing computer type things and no cooking type things and my belly is telling me I best start whipping up a backup plan but my mind is telling me to set boundaries and give myself a night off damnit! So he finally moseyed downstairs a bitty past 8 and proclaimed that dining out sounded like a great Friday night activity.
We decide to try our luck at Queen's English, which has been on our short list of restaurants to try for a while now, but we have never been so fortunate as to score a table. Well thank our lucky covid stars, with the addition of the new outdoor seating setup, we were able to score a prime table right next to the bike rack! And with no wait to boot!
First impression: minuscule menu. Now, many restaurants have cut down their menu during this weird pandemic sitch we've got going on, so I don't know what is was pre-coronavirus and who knows if there will ever be a post-cornavirus, amirte? But for now, you get your pick of like 8 options and that's not an exaggeration. The drink menu was much more impressive, but food -- I was very very underwhelmed. Especially being a vegetarian. The menu, which is that small plate/big price format that DC loves so much, seemed interesting enough for meat eaters; there was seafood, chicken and beef to tickle your carnivora fancies, but sadly, there was only one seemingly vegetarian option... even the tofu dish had seafood in it. The veg dish was wok peaches. When the waitress came to take our orders, I asked if that was the only option on the menu that was vegetarian, and she said it surely was not, but as we went through the list together, she realized that it was indeed the only option on the menu sans meat. And that's not that rare actually, it is not uncommon for restaurants to only offer one vegetarian dish, especially ones with small menus such as this case. But peaches? Alright peaches it is.
My fiance got the shrimp pin noodles. He was going to go for the octopussy but was dissuaded when told that it was a lone tentacle served over a smear of fancy sauce, and that just wasn't going to cut it for his man appetite. The menu is supposed to be small shared plates FYI, and as described to us, the portions get bigger as you move down the menu. Had it been a different day, we would probably opt to order more plates (except not me as there was only one veg option) but since we weren't in the mood for dropping $150, we stuck to one dish each. + free rice. YAS.
Shortly after putting in our orders, the waitress came with our drinks, let me sip my wine for approval, and confirmed with me that the peach dish isn't actually vegetarian, but they could make it so by using a different sauce. She said they could also make the Lotus Root veg too, by skipping the anchovy, but when asked, she told me the peaches were the better of the two, so I stuck to my original order.
Two minutes later and the peaches were delivered to the table. They tasted much like grilled peaches. Guess I got that 'que after all! Don't get me wrong, they were tasty. The first bite was bold and smoky and a great sweet and tangy flavor. Nice texture -- not mushy or soft. It felt good to eat. But, after 4-5 bites, I was quite done with peaches.
The shrimp noodles arrived shortly thereafter (food arrives as it's ready) and it was definitely a decent serving and enough to feed someone for their meal. He said they were very tasty and cleaned the plate. He also ordered a Chinese tuxedo cocktail and said it too was very good. He gave high praise for the food, including the peaches, and the drink.
It wasn't until our waitress came to check on us, after I had already pushed aside the rest of the peach dish and the noodles were half way masticated by my betrothed, that she mentioned that they could make those noodles vegetarian too. Now you tell me?! I would have enjoyed a bowl of noodles for dinner 792384% more than peaches. Again, the peaches were good, just not dinner material.
The bill came to $69. That's for a glass of wine and a gussied up peach, shrimp noods and one cocktail.
TLDR; Come with loose purse after a substantial lunch. If you are vegetarian, ask up front what on the menu could be made to be vegetarian. It aint too peachy to settle. read more
