Queenys was such a treat on the Durham food tour. I was pretty new to trying birria when we went and this birria French dip was next level. Welcoming, friendly, and fun are just a few words to describe Queeny's. A few friends and I were walking around hungry after a long and fun night. The fun continued as soon as we saw a few folks outside at Queeny's. We were greeted by a guy who was so sweet and insisted on checking our id's because we didn't look over the age of 25--sure. We found a spot inside the dark bar with a wrap around bar and several table tops. What got me was the tiny table that had a flower top that reminded me of something similar my grandmother had! It was nostalgic and fun. We ended up ordering food and water at the bar from the nicest bartender. She was so friendly and you could tell she really liked her job. Our food was brought out really quickly despite it being very busy. The nachos we got had tons of spice, chunky salsa, and whole pinto beans. We managed to get through most of them, but food won as the nachos were abundantly stuffed. My friend loved her birria sandwich and said she would come back for another one. Overall, we have already decided we are coming back. The food was on point, and the vibe was relaxed and welcoming. I love that everyone was wanted there. The vibe is kinda upscale-dive, with neon murals on the walls and order at the bar, take a number to your table service. While you're waiting, head to the back toward the Rubyfruit sign to find the random mini library/reading nook in the bar (quite charming and random!). Only sampled a tiny bit of the menu for take-out and the mint-cookie-crunch ice cream cake along deserves all the stars. Like high-end Carvel. (Didn't take a pic because, well, I ate it too fast). This new neighborhood bar and grill is brought to you by the folks from Kingfisher! But Queeny's takes a bit of a turn, opting for a more casual feel and retro, groovy decor. Around the bar there's a bunch for 2-person high-tops, 4-tops and even some couches in the corner. The colors are all a bit throw-back with avocados, yellows, oranges and browns. Queeny's offers up a handful of small nibbles and bites, probably enough for a meal or to stretch out the conversation but nothing too serious. The mood here is definitely Durham and local, I like it overall. Feels a bit less opulent than Kingfisher which suits me fine. Not at all crowded at 1:30 -- ordered at the counter, picked up a number and waited. Didn't try the drinks and also didn't realize that there is a free water cooler in the back of the main area -- nice to know for the future. Pretty cool atmosphere too -- very laid back with plenty of seating. As to the food: 1. Chips and salsa -- some smokiness but no heat, my least favorite thing; 2. Sabich sandwich -- perfectly fried eggplant in a pita. Tons of pickled red onion which I loved; 3. Green beans and kale -- very garlicky and delicious; 4. Fried pickles -- star of the show. 'S aight. When I went in, there were a couple of people having a very loud conversation at the bar who sounded like they'd had a few. I had the chicken salad sandwich and found it good, but not life-changing. It took twenty minutes to get the sandwich with fries after I ordered, which seemed slow. Taste of Carolina - Durham Food Tour - 23 Dec 2023 Wow, Taste of Carolina really delivered some excellent bites in Durham today. Our agenda today included stops at: Toasted, Boricua Soul, Queeny's, Bull City Burger, sweets by Shayda. All restaurants did an excellent job. There were six in our party. Here are my individual notes. Toasted - Toasted has been thriving in Durham for over a decade. They offer unique soups and toasted bites/panini's. We were served a cauliflower soup and an avocado crustini. I loved the cauliflower soup. It was surprisingly creamy and tasty. Two In our party loved the avacado crustini, Boricua Soul - This place is special. The husband and wife owners have a captivating story to share about the historical and Philosophical origins of their culinary adventure. They served us a "lunch box" with perfectly prepared Puerto Rican roast pork, greens (soul food) , Mac & Cheese (soul food) and tostones (Puerto Rican). It was a huge bite and was the favorite stop for 5 people in our party. Next time we attend a Durham Bulls game we plan to eat here. Queeny's - is a friendly, creative bar / pub. They served us upscale nachos and a glass of dry cider. The nachos were very popular. The dry cider was interesting and unique. They owner made us feel welcome and encouraged us to try the many well designed drinks and bar foods. Bill City Burgers - The owner do an outstanding job describing his unique commitment to serving only Greason fed beef raised locally and making every item served here in house by his team of chefs. The burgers were excellent. They were bursting with beefy flavor and cooked perfectly. Be sure to try the deep fried pickles. So unique and loved by all. Two in our party picked this stop as their "Best Bite" selection. Sweets by Sayda - our last stop offered devine French Pastries. Macrons, croissants and other delicacies were shared. Share these pastries with those you love. They will treasure these treats. Lastly, I would like to share our deep appreciation to the folks at "Taste of Carolina" food tours. Our hosts had to manage finding a fifth stop today since their schedule included a venue who had to close due to kitchen staff all falling ill. In addition, I was recently released from the hospital due to foot surgery. These made waking very difficult. Our hosts did everything possible to make sure I was included in all of the stops. We plan on doing these Taste of Carolina Tours in the future: Hillsborough, Carrboro and Winston-Salem. read more

I wasn't personally a fan of this place at all. I got a couple different dishes and didn't enjoy either. I got some sort of pork sandwich and the pork had so much fat on it, I was picking apart the sandwich the whole time I ate it. It was unfortunate that it had so much fat, because it actually had great flavor and I think I could've really enjoyed this sandwich. I also tried the chicken tenders and this could be my personal bias but I always hate hate hate when places make chicken tenders with the kind of batter that is similar to a beer batter? It just feels super greasy, not crunchy and tastes like oil. Not a fan. My partner got something on a baguette with a dip, like a French dip. He said he really enjoyed his. We knew nothing about Queeny's, but it was right there and the menu looked fine. We picked up our menus and headed to a large booth. The atmosphere was fun with 80s, music playing. I greatly appreciated that there were a good number of vegetarian options for my daughter, and not just veggie burgers. I had a burger, which was fantastic. My husband had the birria. You order up at the bar, but you grab a table yourself, and there's no napkins/no one to wipe your table so you have to ask someone to get them, and it's all very confusing. I wouldn't recommend it. - Fried pickles and nachos were excellent - Gin drink was not good - Potato fritters were forgetful What took me aback is how extremely rude the servers were the evening I visited. Queeny's has excellent service and they were very quick but the dish I ordered was lacking. I got the Big Kale Salad with no cheese to make it vegan. The first miss for me was if you call it a kale salad the kale needs to be present. I specifically came here because I was craving a kale salad. The greens they chose were soggy and didn't hold up to the dressing. The dressing also could've used a bit more acidity. The rest of the ingredients were very sparse except for my added tofu. They did not skimp on the tofu (+$4) and I enjoyed the grilled taste but it was lacking seasoning as well. The roasted pears and dried cranberries were a nice addition but again were barely there. Overall it wasn't horrible but I would not recommend this dish. I do think some alterations can be made to make this better but as is I wouldn't get it again. read more

It was on my friend's birthday and, wouldn't you know it, he's the only one I know that loves sea shanties. We had to go. The food is edible but not exceptionally delicious. I had the cheeseburger which was large (1/2 lb) for $14 without a side. My colleague had the chicken salad sandwich, which was stated to be "good.". Based on the review I expected something more exceptional . The staff was friendly and diverse.
