I reserved a small vehicle. To my surprise, I was given a larger vehicle. Ford Edge. It was perfectly sized for me, super clean, full and fantastic on gas, and easy to manage. I first off questioned the man while later to find out was the supposed "manager" if my insurance set it up for the correct 10 day period , he assured me he'd confirm it once he got in the system ( never confirmed with me ) , I was never told about what time to bring it back. I was actually given a blank reservation form and that's it. I wasn't informed on the type of gas the car takes , didn't tell me they were closed on Sunday ( my drop off day ) nor that they didn't have a drop box , so now here I am not knowing how to drop off the vehicle since all Hertz in the area are closed Sunday , to add to the minor inconvenience I was being told I was charged for a whole 10 days of insurance when i wasnt under the impression of that happening. after a yelling match and being hung up on by said 'manager' I made it clear I wasn't paying for the whole 10 days but would for the weekend I would be out of town. When I asked "who" cancelled my reservation, the nasty girl (definitely not a lady) said she "didn't know, it's just cancelled". I confirmed with National Customer service, as well as my travel company that the reservation had not been cancelled. After my second conversation with Customer Service, I learned that my formal reservation wasn't cancelled until about 4 hours after my encounter with the staff. The cancellation happened at the local level. Was told that District Manager would be calling me and finding me a car would be priority.... That has not happened. I'm an Executive Elite client with National but definitely going to look at other rental car agencies if this type of customer service is allowed. My coworker communicated that he had same experience when he flew into to Newport News. This morning I received a generic response to my google review; however, it takes you back to the same number I called for resolution snd a chat page!!! So still no call from a human or resolution of issue... Also- online it's showing car availability!

When I get to National and ask what happened to the Jeep I reserved, rep says "there's a shortage". He then proceeds to tell me I can rent a Nissan Altima, but it's going to be MORE expensive than my original agreement???? Then he informs me there's a $400 deposit required because this location is inside an airport. He goes on to say that a debit card cannot be used at all unless I have a return flight plane ticket. Why would they not communicate this information when making the reservation?! All in all, I made an advance reservation with a confirmation number for a Jeep that never existed....only to have National try to charge me almost $600 to rent a basic car! This was a terrible experience and resulted in cancellation of a family Spring Break road trip thanks to National. This place needs to get it together. If there were zero stars, that's what I would gladly give.

I had a reservation that I had triple confirmed by phone & chat. I received a text reminding me of the reservation. The lady at the counter asked (yelled, because I was behind someone else in line) if I made my reservation today, I nodded, and she tells me "no same-day reservations!" I tried to speak, but she wouldn't let me get a word in. You can't trust these people. It's ridiculous.

Service has always been extremely friendly and good-natured, which is so refreshing getting off of a stressful or choppy flight. I had one woman jokingly fool me into believing the car she had ready for me had purple stripes. I could have handled them! To pick up your Hertz rental, leave the airport, walk across the pickup and drop-off area, and either go down the stairs or the elevator to the ground floor. The Hertz vehicles are located right outside of the stairwell. The cars in service here are OK. I only rent cars a handful of times per year, so I'm not so in tune with the industry norms, but I feel that my last few cars have had between 15,000 and 20,000 miles on them. I generally opt for the most inexpensive car class and have recently drawn two Kia Rios and one Nissan Versa, black, white, and gray. I will continue to use Hertz at PHF for my rental needs and see no reason to use any of the airport's (most likely very good) car services.

It's a used car lot and they rent the cars they're selling so they're not in perfect condition but it's VERY affordable. I rented a small car and they told me they'd call me when a full size came back and I could swap it out free of charge. The lady working inside is very nice. They require a drivers license, full coverage insurance (they will call your policy holder to verify), & a $100 deposit. They accepted my debit card so don't worry if you don't have a credit card. They refund your deposit the same way you give it to them. If I remember correctly they also accept cash. The cars aren't extremely fancy but they get you from point a to point b which is all I needed. I would definitely recommend. *also to add, I'd call before going because their hours ref very promising. At least not when I went a few months ago. It was hit and miss. Lol nonetheless once you get a hold of someone they're very helpful. I'll def be using them whenever I come into town. It makes too much sense not to. *one more note, it's not the fanciest or jazziest of places but don't be scared by the looks lol they're friendly.
