Heat Pump Service Issue and Billing Concern Background In September 2024, I purchased two new heat pumps from R.A. Hoy. Since I am retired and spend most of my time at home, I do not need to adjust the temperature frequently. Specifically, the unit in question serves the upstairs area, which I rarely visit during the day. Discovery of the Issue In February 2026, I received a service message on my thermostat for the upstairs unit. Upon checking the unit through my app, I discovered that it had been running continuously, 24 hours a day, since mid-November 2025 up until the present date in February 2026. Service Call and Diagnosis I contacted R.A. Hoy for service. The technician identified that the unit was only producing 70-degree air and was one pound low on refrigerant. I also have 2 inspections each year that were reported as good. Electric Bill Concerns Because my electric bill is automatically paid from my bank account and has remained consistent for over 10 years, I had not been monitoring it closely. However, after realizing the heat pump had been running non-stop, I reviewed my bills and noticed an increase of over $100 per month starting from when the unit failed in November 2025. My electric bill is normally lower in the winter as my gas furnace heat my home when temperature is 40 degrees or lower. Concerns Regarding the Repair and Warranty I received a bill from R.A. Hoy for the refrigerant. I believe that, since the leak appears to be a result of the initial installation, I should not be responsible for this charge. Additionally, if this leak is not properly addressed, it is likely to recur annually. However, I was informed that because the issue arose more than a year after installation, it is not covered under the warranty. read more

We've been using RA Hoy for a few years and have had excellent service with them. They respond quickly and have been very efficient with working around schedules. The techs that come to service the units know their stuff and can explain it without mansplaining it which I appreciate. They're not cheap but like everything, you get what you pay for. Company provided service but never sent an invoice for 6 months. When my first invoice was received it stated I was over 6 months past due and "do not service" flags were placed on my account. less than 30 days later my account was sent to collections. I've asked Ra Hoy to correct their billing issues and send a invoice with correct information on it. Ra Hoy has refused to correct their mistake. Ra Hoy has caused my financial distress by sending unexpected statements and is also looking to cause credit reporting distress. I would avoid this company until they can get their act together and treat customers properly and fairly. read more

The person came out and adjusted the one piece I already had there brand new and did not fix the problem. They did no prior or additional testing to find out was actually wrong with the system. The system was semi operational when the arrived and I had a report from a HVAC person before them then after he left the system was worse off in multiple areas and in complete failure. I never got a service report or quote. They just broke my system worse and then tried to sell me an entire new system as my only option. I have never felt more disrespected or manipulated then with them. I have tried to reach out to supervisors but not heard back yet. The diagnosis by 2 separate companies before and after them match. All we know is that they broke, disconnected, or un-plugged something to make make the system worse and most likely force the sale of a new unit. read more

We had our 2 year old AC break down that HOY had installed on a weekend while there were guests there. We had an AC person come out immediately that happened to be available. He determined that the coil was bad (which was under warranty) He did a temporary fix and added coolant as well. I called HOY first thing Monday morning to schedule the repair. I was told the part was ordered and would "probably" take a few days. I understand getting parts these days are an issue and of course this case was no exception. The AC was working so waiting wasn't a big issue. I told them very clearly to let me know when it arrived so we could schedule the repair. I needed to schedule it on a turnover day or at least get permission from any guests that were occupying the home. Almost 3 weeks later they show up and start the repair. No notice, no call at all. The technician had the unit apart when my neighbor noticed his vehicle and called me. The guests happened to be at the beach and we couldn't get ahold of them for permission to enter the home. In addition, we were charged $1300. to replace the coil that was under warranty. This was in addition to the the diagnostic fee they charged. All of this after we had paid the technician who came out immediately. This was my parents home and they had used HOY for years. After going through all of their files of work, AC replacements etc I was shocked how overcharged they were over the years. I'm sure the elders are their target market. We will be moving on to another company that is dependable and reasonably priced. Just had my second service from RA Hoy. This visit was a separate issue from the first service call. Both times, I was impressed with the initial responsiveness of the company and of the work done. Especially this second service call; the technician was troubleshooting the problem and said he was 90% sure my heat pump was shot and would need replacement, but that he had to check one more thing to be completely sure. Turned out, that "one more thing" was the root cause of the problem and my heat pump was up and running again after a minor fix. I am grateful that the technician was thorough and didn't jump to a conclusion before investigating every possibility. I'll eventually need to replace the unit but thanks to the great work of RA Hoy, it doesn't have to be now! read more

So impressed with R.A.Hoy! The technician showed up with a mask on a Saturday afternoon within 2 hrs of my desperate call to diagnose our broken AC. They had my AC fixed within the hour and my house cooled down from 90 degrees to 70 within a couple of hours. Thank you R.A. Hoy for your great customer service! So, In August 2016 my dad and I were working on his house in the OBX...my brother is the tenant. We noticed the AC. unit was leaking and swelling the ceiling in the garage. We called R.A. Hoy to come out and take a look at it..since they were the ones that had installed it some years back. A technician comes out to the house, goes up into the attic (pull down stairs) and tells my brother we need a new catch basin because the one there has a hole in it, about $300-$600. The next day, the AC unit is no longer working. My brother calls them back and they send a different technician out to the house. This technician comes into the house and tells my dad (i'm not there) that he needs to replace this and that and something about needing a new compressor. My dad informs me of the news and I ask to speak with the technician. I, trying to remain calm, ask what the heck happened in the last 24 hours?? How do we go from maybe a $300 bill to one that is additional $2000.00??? He had no explaination because he wasn't the tech that came the day before. He knew I was not having it, and went on to ask me if I wanted him to remove the new part he just put on, and replace it with the old one he took off. I was like what?? No one told you to fix anything!! Don't you diagnose the problem first and then give the customer an estimate? Why would you just start "fixing" things without permission?!!?? So now I call the R.A.Hoy company, and I say hello, we had a technician come out to ## Drive and she looked up the account and said, "Oh, yes, you need a new catch pan". I explained what had transpired in the last 24 hours and demanded to know how we go from a perfectly working AC unit that has a leaking catch pan to a broken unit that now needs $2300.00 worth of work!!?? She connects me to the manager. He says he talked to his tech that was there the day before and the tech said my brother was next to him the entire time he was in the attic...HA!! my brother is a good 300lbs if not more...there's no way he was up there with another grown man..and my brother confirmed he was on the ground while the guy was in the attic. The the manager goes on to speak to me in a condescending manner, "Ma'am, it's like a car, you don't know when your car is going to break down do you?" I said, "Are you kidding me?? Do you think I'm stupid?" He then tells me, that they were not the ones that installed the unit, and I explain to him, that, YES, you did, and that was the only reason why we called them in the first place! He looked up our account and confirms that, they indeed DID install the unit, and that the warranty had just recently expired...(well, that's pretty convenient, don't you think??) Needless to say, we did NOT have R.A.Hoy do any work. **FAST FOWARD TO NOV.2016** My dad is at the house again, and I'm back at home. I scheduled another heating and air conditioning service to come out and check out the problem. Low and behold, there's nothing broken or needing to be replaced on the unit at all. The tech was there for less than an hour and got the unit running again!! ***DO NOT USE R.A. HOY***...nothing but a scammer!! Making money off of trusting homeowners. You can bet your butt I will be filing a complaint with the BBB. read more

Well tried to use this company to buy two new units. The salesman made an appointment with us - never showed. Called again said be there that afternoon- never showed. Called them again to schedule for them to come give estimate - told they would call me right back. Ahhh that was three days ago. I guess they don't need the business or want to sell two new units. A couple of years ago the upstairs a/c unit in our house failed in the middle of the summer. The company that had installed it, OBX Heating and A/C, could not get anyone to look at it for a week. R.A. Hoy could respond quickly. They recommended replacement, as the freon system had a significant leak and the unit was twenty years old. We decided to go with replacement. I compared their price to other companies, and found them in the same range as others, so we had them do the work. It went fine and the unit has been reliable. Last week the downstairs unit lost power. I called the R.A. Hoy tech who had supervised the new unit installation last year; he said it sounded like a low voltage fuse in the unit. A tech would come out in a couple of days. The tech came and in five minutes confirmed the problem was a fuse, much like a car fuse. He replaced it, all good, cost wad $136. This sounded like a lot, but I figured money well dpent. I paid, his system emailed me an invoice. When I checked the invoice, it detailed charges of $68 for labor and $2 for the fuse, for a total with taxes of $72. Because I paid $136, it showed a credit of $63. I contacted to tech to ask for an explanation - he said he was off for a couple of days but would get back to me. He never did, so I called the office. They told me the tech didn't know how to use the ipad in his truck and the invoice he gave me was incorrect. They then sent me an invoice showing charges of $98 for "diagnostics" (?) and $38 to replace the $2 fuse. On reflection, it seems clear to me this was complete bullshit. The amount of money is not the point; the casual dishonesty is. I now question whether our upstairs unit, two years ago, actually needed to be replaced. In short, I no longer trust this company and will not call them again. read more

I cannot say enough about this company. They are fantastic! We own a rental home in Kitty Hawk and had to replace of HVAC in 2014. Unfortunately we have had issues with the unit we purchased but RA Hoy has stood behind us and made the repairs without added cost to us. A year ago I had some issues with mold/mildew coming from my ceiling vents. RAHoy came and did the work , elevating the vents in the attic , cleaning the boots and sealing them and then treating for mold. Last week I noticed a problem in the bathroom and took the vent down to look and it appeared the problem was back. RA Hoy came and redid all the vents and used a newer product to seal them. They did this all at no charge. I have been very impressed with the service they provide even in the office staff who were also extremely helpful, A big shout out to Fred and Marcie for their superior service. It's been almost a year, but it still bothers me that they charged me like $150 to connect one wire to two new thermostats. It took less than five minutes. I had installed them, just had the wiring slightly wrong. I complained to no avail. I would not use these people again on a bet! read more

It is my opinion this company has taken advantage of the victims of hurricane Irene.When initially quoting the job they only quote costly options. After the job is complete they then advised of less costly options. Their work is good but it's all about the money. Extended warranties are more costly than through other dealers. Buyer beware. read more
