In search of a good banh mi near me led me to pick up a delicious lunch today. The folks at R & D Cafe were kind and we enjoyed a great conversation as I waited for my food. The restaurant has room for sit down dining and plenty of parking. I ordered a chicken banh mi. The bread had a perfect crunch giving way to soft bread, chicken, jalapeños, daikon, carrots, fresh cilantro, cucumber....delicious... Highly recommend and I'll return for their other menu items. I was hungry and in the mood for some Vietnamese food. Lucky for me R&D Cafe is right next door while grocery shopping. I ordered a Vietnamese iced coffee and a grilled pork banh mi. The iced coffee was perfect! It wasn't too bitter it was just right for me. The banh mi was delicious it had so much flavor. It was filled with a good amount of meat. The owners are so sweet! Planned a visit on Monday and found they are closed on Sunday and Mondays. Most of the time, restaurants don't care so much about weekend businesses because foods are good. Dinning alone means I won't be able to get both BBH and Pho. And, this time I didn't ask for a pho broth (alone) for a preliminary taste. Turned out the BBH is quite good. Deep red and flavorful broth. After taste note tips to the sweeter side and can be the owner's personal taste depends on what regions he/she is from in Vietnam. I personally prefer the strong shrimp paste taste (which in this case, IMO not enough) and had a quick convo with the owner lady. "You should ask for more shrimp paste next time" she said. Willing to give me more worths another star. No strong cleaning spray smell is a plus. I came on Feb. 18 and starting this Saturday they will be closed for 2 weeks. I: why? She: we are going to Portugal for 2 weeks I: any must eats on the list? I heard it has a lot of good food. How about the egg tarts? She: I heard it's too sweet so I'm not sure.. I: what? too sweet? Come on, Viet. desserts are quite sweet too, u have to try the egg tarts! Nestled in an aged strip mall, it is definitely a hidden find with regulars. We got banh mi for the airport but we couldn't wait since our food was hot and the restaurant smelled good. Bread was crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Pickles had just the right amount of sweetness also. Grilled pork was tender, with delicious soy-based sauce. The nem nuong was good but a bit dry after I had the grilled pork. Cha gio egg rolls were piping hot, crispy and a delicious mixture of taro and chicken. The best part was the homemade fish sauce that was fishier than other sauces and packed more umami. This was awesome! The iced coffee was good and not too sweet. I have been coming here with my Oma ever since they opened several years ago (usually to go). Their pho, rice plates and garlic noodle plates are so yummy. They never disappoint. The bread was really soft, and the chicken was flavorful. The bread and filling ratio was a bit off though (not enough chicken). I felt like I was eating mostly bread. However, my bar for banh mi sandwiches is Saigon Sandwich in San Francisco. For $6.85, the sandwich wasn't bad. The owner was so sweet and nice when I went into pick up my sandwich. This place is my go-to for when I'm craving some Vietnamese food! My family loves this place and have been here multiple times because of the amazing food they serve. I usually get the bun bo hue and it's always a hit! The broth is flavorful and they really load it up with the different meats and toppings. My family really enjoys their garlic noodles here because it's super buttery and garlicky! Another plus about this place is that the portions are huge for a pretty decent price. R&D Cafe has many tasty, sizable dishes at great prices. The proprietors were warm, gracious and attentive as they took our order and served us. The place was bustling with nearby high school students in line buying carry out lunch; the tables were full of diners. And folks just kept on coming, filling up the small cafe. The vibe inside was friendly and comfy with people chatting and delighting in their meal, as did we. We started off with fried calamari. When we found out they were open for dine-in we drove there right away for dinner! Goi Du Du Tom 4.5/ 5 Hu Tieu Nam Vang 5/5 Bun Bo Hue 5/5 Com Suon Bi Hot Ga 4.5/5 Hu Tieu Nam Vang, the broth was marinated perfectly. I love the clear noodles with all the seafood. Way better than Pho in my opinion. Bun Bo Hue was spicy, and the broth was for sure marinated perfectly and spicy. Com Suon Bi Hot Ga, the pork chop was marinated amazingly and tender. Goi Du DU Tom shrimp papaya salad is delicious and always refreshing to eat before your main dish comes out. I wanted a Banh Mi but they sold out.
