Mike, Ben and their team at Moto Java gave me an honest assessment about what needed to be fixed, gave me an itemized invoice showing me it'd be better I traded my old scooter for parts and bought something new. They appreciated I was an experienced rider, knew what I wanted and didn't try to oversell me on something I didn't want and gave me a fair price for my trade in. My previous scooter dealers/mechanics have given me a wide range of mileage for routine maintenance. Mike and Ben gave me an easy, clear number to remember so I bring my scooter in for routine maintenance based on the specific scooter I bought. Every time I call for an appointment Moto Java gets me in fast and finishes earlier than estimated. They also give me an itemized receipt of what was done and a heads up to what the next maintenance bill will cost so I'm not caught off guard. My review is based on my scooter that I bought from Moto Java. He wrote me up…read morea contract for a good slightly used engine, but what he neglected to tell me was it comes with poor compression, an intake valve leak from front cylinder, completely seized beyond repair oil pressure release valve so pressure was through the roof, and oh I can't forget about the terrible crank shaft end play issue! End play was so bad that the compensating sprocket was kissing the inside of the outer primary and grinding away the outer primary from the inside out. Also it is forcing me to remove the engine myself (which I've never done) and split the crankcase (also never done) in order to figure out what exactly he did wrong, if it's fixable how much it'll cost but if not how much it's gonna cost to replace what needs replacing! Oh and due to the end play problems the clutch basket and hub are now being worn down by the primary chain bc they are no longer in alignment with the compensating sprocket! I will never trust him with anything mechanical as long as he lives!! I strongly suggest you stay clear of his place of shady business dealings! If you're unlucky enough to have your bike there now, I'd rush and get it moved somewhere else!

Took the Valve Adjustment Workshop last month with Lawrence and recently had a 1-on-1 set up with…read morehim as well for my suspension setup and fork seals/oil change. This shop has all the tools you need to wrench on your motorcycle and is located in a quiet corner of Treasure Island. It's a major plus for riders living on the west side of the bay as we do not need to pay toll to get to the area. Plenty of parking out front! Since the Valve Adjustment workshop is an advanced workshop, I highly recommend, especially for sportbike owners, to know how to dismantle your fairings alone. The instructor will not hold your hand during that process. Perhaps due to being a small class, me and another rider only, the instructor helped me remove the gas tank (I've never done it before surprisingly). Otherwise, they do mean it when you need to get to your valve cover alone or at least know what it is and what to remove to get to it. Therefore, I'd recommend at least knowing basic maintenance or have done it before on your bike before taking the advanced workshop. I cannot speak to the beginner workshops as I have never done them before but from this workshop, I gained plentiful knowledge, there was ample time for questions, and feel more confident getting to the valves by myself now. Lawrence was patient and explained everything clearly. I'll probably be coming here for future maintenance needs when I don't have the tools at my own place to do the job. It's well equipped and the lift makes a HUGE difference on my lower back. Consider taking additional courses here if you have never done any maintenance on your motorcycle!

The item I put up for consignment sold and I was never notified. I still haven't received a check even though the owner said twice he would send one. I would give a lukewarm recommendation to visit Moto Guild if you need the shop space and live close to Treasure Island. The folks who took that route seemed pleased.

I purchased my '03 Yamaha Zuma from First Kick back in 2006 and had a good initial impression as they guided me through the purchase. Fast forward to maintenance 2008. I recently brought it in for annual servicing knowing that I'd need at least the back tire and brake pads replaced. I OK'd the estimate for these two pieces of work plus yearly maintenance, approving work totaling no more than $350. I should have known something was up when I asked for the carbon for the work estimate, and the guy in the shop (Louis M.) said, "This is for us." I thought that strange, knowing that it was my legal right to have a carbon copy of the estimate, but walked without it, trusting them. A few days later, I get a call from another guy in the shop (Chris B.) saying they had "put the Zuma up on the lift and discovered dry rot in the front tire" as well as the need for a new front rotor. When I asked him how much parts + labor for those two jobs would be, he said (after "researching" part cost), "$400." When I questioned him about what seemed to be the exorbitant cost considering how easy it is to work on scoots, he replied, "That's what it costs." Yet again trusting them, I said, "Well, the work needs to be done, and if it needs to be done, then OK." Later that evening, I talked to a motorcycle friend of mine who basically said, "No way in hell should two tires, a front rotor, new brake pads and yearly maintenance (which is basically spark plug replacement plus changing out the oil) cost $800." I showed up at First Kick the very next morning and talked to Tony. I had spent a sleepless night lamenting my own sucka-ness in not being a better, more educated consumer. Most of all, I was angry that, in First Kick's mind, they felt they could d-ck me around just cause I have boobs. I insisted on going through the estimate for each piece of work line-by-line so I could understand better how they came up with $800. Sure enough, each piece of work was "padded" with some extra charge, totaling about $40 per job. When asked about the PHONY CHARGES, Tony replied that the parts guys put in a generic part at the beginning of the work order and clear it out with more accurate pricing after the job is done. After the line item scrutiny, my bill magically dropped from $800 to $622. I still believe they gouged me in terms of hourly labor cost, charging way more time than it takes to unscrew a front rotor bolt, for instance. (The final bill says a full hour to replace the front disc). And considering my scoot only cost a bit less than $2000 to purchase, $800 for routine repairs is outrageous. All in all, though, lesson learned. They have lost my business as a customer, and I recently steered away a friend from taking her scoot there for repairs. One positive thing to share about them-- Tony is a champ. I was sleep-deprived, outraged, and felt very much so taken advantage of when I spoke to him the day after. He took the time out of his busy day to explain in depth what goes on for each repair and was gracious enough to understand my frustration. Also, he wiped away the extra, unexplained $175 from my bill and (at least in my estimation) seemed to want to make amends. For that, he wins an Upstanding Man Trophy in my book.

Nini at the front desk was absolutely perfect for the job imo: compassionate, reassuring, and exactly what a first-timer needs before throwing a leg over a bike for the first time for real. Freddie and Henry were great too, really easy dudes to talk to and very helpful with sharing tips and other pointers for me. I'll be honest, I dropped the bike an equal number of times on both sides over the weekend, all at zero mph (embarassing af). Symmetrically bruised ego, perfectly balanced. Returning it felt intimidating, but the whole team handled it with zero judgment and genuine professionalism. I didn't try to hide anything and they made the whole process painless, albeit with some monetary penalties caused by my inexperience (I own up to this though). I'm leaving with my wallet lighter but with my heart genuinely fuller for the experience. The environment this shop creates for nervous beginners like me is genuinely rare, and it made me feel supported and motivated to come back and do better next time. Will absolutely be back for my next rental and keep getting ride time in, because real experience gained like I did is priceless.
