I booked various appointments with Linda, the owner, through October 2022. I booked most of my appointments in 2021. My first appointment with Linda was cancelled. I reached out via email (no one ever answers the phone) to get the appointment rescheduled. I was surprised to get a response from her that not only was my appointment not going to be honored, she was canceling ALL of my appointments with her because she's decided to only do color and extension appointments. There was no remorse or an attempt to ensure that my scheduled services were rescheduled. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Your appointments are unlikely to be honored and are likely to be cancelled. You deserve better than the lack of professionalism and cancelled appointments you're likely to encounter. read more

As such, I was extremely reluctant to go to a traditional salon where they use harsh chemicals on clients (and the stylists whom work there). So, I was relieved when I saw there was a hair salon here focusing on natural haircare products. Pre-Appointment. I often get flustered in the styling chair and don't always properly communicate the hair style I'm looking for much less the unique qualities of my hair (lots of long, fine hair, some coarse hair in the back). So, instead, weeks before I made an appointment, I emailed the salon describing the state of my hair (texture, up-keep routine) and the style I was looking for (trim, layered on the sides) including a photo of a similar hair style I liked. Appointment. When I got to the salon for my hair cut and styling appointment, Jalessea, the stylist already knew exactly what I wanted and was able to get down to work. Jalessea was diligent, gentle, and gave me the exact hair style I was looking for! I was so pleased with the outcome, her skillfulness, and the high quality natural haircare products that I was enthused to purchase products (made in Italy) she used on my hair. Next Day. When I woke up in the morning, even after tying my hair in a bun, the curls had loosened, but my hair still looked great the next day! I'm so excited to have found a natural hair salon in DC with reasonable prices and incredible service. They are still only accepting patients by appointment only, so it made my service fairly quick since I didn't have to wait to get my hair trimmed. The hairdresser I was assigned to was so gentle with my natural hair and it barely felt as though I was getting my hair detangled. The wash process was also great and she used this really cool steamer as a quick method of deep conditioning. The trim was pretty painless and my hair felt healthy and well taken care of afterwards. I was referred here by a friend. booked an appointment for a trim and color. the earliest available slot was three months out. I decided to go ahead and book. A week before the appointment I was told my appointment was cancelled (no explanation) and rescheduled for another two months out. it's simply unacceptable to treat new clients this way. if I didn't have an alternative I would have been left out in the cold. they were unapologetic and their attitude was simply "too bad." I don't even write reviews, but after sleeping on it and still being pissed off, I figure I'd get it out in a review. Long review ahead ... I went to get a wig colored. I wanted the hair lightened with highlights added throughout. I took in a few photos. I will start with the good: They are friendly! The woman I worked with (Linda?) was really nice! And I like that they have beverages and a few snacks. The bad: The color job on my wig doesn't look anything like what I asked for! The color is wrong! How I wanted the color added is wrong! I specified highlights in my initial email and during the consultation (which was done at the front of the shop and not a personalized appointment at one of the stations). Come to find out "the girl in your photo doesn't have highlights. It's colored in an ombre pattern." This should've been said at the consultation. And, even if you were sticking to what's in the photo, WHAT YOU DID STILL DOESN'T LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THE PHOTO. This is an epic case of "What I Asked For vs. What I Got." I won't even post photos due to embarrassment, but just know the side-by-side is jarring. The color is this brassy/bronzy color with reddish undertones (?). When I saw the unit in the salon, I was gave it the side eye, but I wanted to take it home before I responded. When I put that unit on I about died. I had to pull up the photos that I showed them. Definitely not the same. In the photos, her goldeny color frames her face and dances lightly at the ends of her hair toward the front. There are clearly pieces of her natural hair color mixed in with the ligthened pieces. What I got was that odd color on every strand of hair. No variation whatsoever. Upon realizing it wasn't what I wanted, I sent an email (another con: they don't answer the phone and if you leave a VM it is not answered promptly--I received a call back 7 hours later. Not sure how a business doesn't have a dedicated receptionist to answer the phone. All of my communication was via email and they respond to those with 24 hours.) In the email explained what I was unhappy with and sent a side-by-side of what I asked for and what I got. She told me that the color is from swatch and she was willing to tone the hair to lighten and remove the brassy look; however, if I want highlights I would need to send her a picture of what I wanted and pay another service fee. Lol! Wow, really? Here's my thing: I know what I asked for and I can also SEE that my hair doesn't look like the photo. To tell me that I now have to pay for additional services to get what I asked for is really disheartening. An apology followed by "bring it in so we can get this right" would have been the right thing to do. I know that's not cost-effective for your business and your time is money, but customer satisfaction should also be a priority. I'd understand if it were a simple discrepancy about the color being too light or dark, but this is a clear case of the colorist messing up and the rigid, matter-of-fact response is disappointing. HIGHLIGHTS is what I asked for (it's even in my original email!). I won't bother taking it back for it to be "toned." I'll try to salvage it on my own. I am just disappointed in the entire process and their response. Businesses like to clear their name in the comments, but no matter what they say (if they say anything), we both know it was a botched color job. I'm always wary of reviews that are negative when everyone else has such positive experiences, but I now realize one-offs do happen. This was not a good experience, and I'm out $170 (color service with tip) in addition to the $300 wig that I cant wear. If you want them to do your color be very, very cautious, ask all of the questions and maybe bring a powerpoint presentation, a venn diagram, and slide show of what you want because obviously photos aren't enough. read more

I was ridiculously apprehensive about allowing anyone to touch my hair after 3 years of being natural. I've NEVER let anyone touch it, not even my mom. However, I knew I was in desperate need of a both a serious detangle and a trim. I'm visiting from Vegas where there is no natural hair love and someone suggested this place. I was happy to look on their website and seeing them offering natural hair services for just what I needed: a detangle, deep conditioner and blow out and trim. Despite being nervous about the blow out as I've never had heat on my hair, I made a next day appointment with Jalessea. My hair was extremely tangled and Jalessea was incredibly patient and thorough, giving me tips to avoid the tangled mess I'd got myself into and stopping occasionally to ask how I was or if I was in pain. The exact opposite, in fact, she was so gentle I nearly fell asleep. After the detangle, she proceeded to wash and deep condition my hair (with the most amazing scalp massage ever I might add) and gave me some water to drink as I waited for my deep condition to steam. Once it came time to blow dry, Jalessea sectioned out each part of my hair, and detangled once more before twisting my hair into Bantu knots so she could dry it in sections. She made me feel very comfortable and afterwards my hair was so beautiful! She trimmed it perfectly, making sure everything was even where it needed to be and finished everything off with a shoulder massage. (What?! - Oh yes girl, a massage.) The process was so incredibly smooth, and she was never impatient or rude even though my appointment ran a little over on account of my tough detangle. This place made me so incredibly happy. I came to RJOS on December 20, 2017 with very high expectations given the good reviews. I asked for dark red highlights and a curly cut. The stylist Linda cut a huge amount off my hair (way more than I asked), and was extremely uneven. I received patchy highlights that eventually turned bleach blonde because the color and toner she used didn't work. If you have natural curly hair, stay FAR away from this salon! I left with patchy highlights, an uneven cut, and my hair was weighed down with an excessive amount of product. The salon is clean and the stylist was nice, but I would never come here again. I have never been inspired to write a Yelp review before. I usually just take my lumps and eat them or whatever that saying is, but I was so traumatized by a recent visit to the Rachel Joyce Salon and feel compelled to share my experience. I had been going to the same salon for haircuts for many years and decided to go out on a limb a try a new place. This is important to note because I am very, VERY leery about people touching my hair. I usually do my own hair, but alas, I can't cut my own hair so off to the salon I go. I did a LOT of research before selecting this salon because that he who I am. Everything prior to the visit was great. I called with many questions and received a return call from someone answering them for me. My questions were related to about if they use heat to give hair cuts (I am scared of heat damage). She said they do, but she assured me that they use heat protectant, etc. When I arrived on May 3 at 2:30pm, I thought the salon was clean and maintained and was immediately greeted and shampooed. So far so good. HERE IS WHERE IT STARTED TO GO WRONG The stylist proceeded to blow dry my hair very straight, and then asked me what I wanted. I mentioned that I had already cut about 2.5 inches of my hair during the weekend and was primarily looking for the back and sides cut shorter. So essentially a mushroom cut. I showed her a picture of myself in the cut that was taken 3 years ago. She said that she thought more needed to be taken off the top because my ends were bad. I nervously said okay, but once she took the first cut, I immediately said, "This is already not going to be that cut. My hair is going to be way shorter than that photo." She quelled my concerns and said let's see what it looks like when I am done. The thing is us naturals have a phenomenon that happens to our hair called shrinkage. It seemed like she didn't understand that. I don't know, but by the time she was done, my hair was very short. Way shorter than the photo. She wet my hair so that we can see what it looked like and my hair looked like a church bush! It was what we called "the awkward length". I was SOOO shaken up because that is not what I signed up for. She "styled" it, and when it was done, I wanted to burst into tears. I hate that length on me. I told her that I didn't want to walk out like that. And asked her to take the sides and the back down so that the cut can be more stylish. At this point I'd rather have a shorter cut than walk out with something that doesn't look good on me. When she took the first cut, I realized that I was about to get the shortest cut I had had in more then 10 years. I wasn't expecting her to cut it that short. Imagine walking in expecting to retain most of your length and walking out with an extremely short cut. She didn't really take the time to precisely adjust the cut. Honestly, I think she was shaken up. We both were, She wanted it to end and so did I. Because I am a mild mannered person who feels uncomfortable stirring drama, I paid; she apologized more than once; I sobbed most of the night. Since then, I have attempted to fix the cut myself because it was very, very uneven. There are many good reviews here, but I guess I was an unlucky one. read more

This place was recommend to me by a coworker so I filled out the online consultation and got a same day appointment with Mia (so awesome)! I received a wash, condition, blow dry, flat iron, and style. It was around $69 and totally worth it. This was my first time coming to a salon like this being that I'm mixed with black and white but my curly hair's texture is more on the whiter side. I absolutely love what Mia did with my hair and how healthy it looks and feels. I will definitely be back. I am totally in LOVE with two of the stylist at Rachel Joyce! My first experience at Rachel Joyce was with Ashley in May 2018 and that experience made Rachel Joyce my natural hair home. This salon is professional. They are about the business of healthy hair. Today I had my hair trimmed by Jalessea and it was fabulous. She does a great head massage while washing your tresses. There was no water splashed over my face, no water down my back, which means no wet clothing. She was gentle yet effective in detangling my zigzags and coils... no head yanking, pulling, snatching, or tugging. The stretching/blowdrying process was just as gentle and effective. She showed me what needed to be trimmed BEFORE to started cutting and she only trimmed what needed to be removed. I walked out of Rachel Joyce a very happy client with a fresh trim in two braids. Hi, I was excited to try the Rachel Joyce salon. I found it odd that you can't speak to anyone and all communication has to be done via text or email--especially in the hair industry. That said, I went with it and made an appointment for last Friday at 9.30am. At 11.30pm Thursday night I got a text canceling my appointment and asking if I could reschedule for the following Wednesday. I found it completely unacceptable to cancel my appointment less than 12 hrs before the appointment (especially given their own strict cancellation policy). The next morning I texted and asked if I could speak to someone regarding my appointment. I heard anything back. I sent multiple texts through the day and hours hours later was finally told someone would call me after the salon closed. I still heard from no one. This is very poor customer service. The fact that you can cancel someone at 11.30pm for a 9.30am appointment via text message is not the way to run a business. Just a fair warning to anyone out there looking for "old school" customer service where you can speak to someone and . This is not the salon for you. Update: I understand that emergencies happen, you ha d missed the point. I would have appreciated a call to try to resolve the issue. This was my first visit to this salon but it won't be my last. From beginning to end I was provided with great service and the quality of their hair care/styling methods exceeded my expectations and fortunately for me lived up to the reviews I'd read online. For a little background, I have been wearing my hair natural for many years and I have a lot of hair. Most stylists in the area, despite my concerns or preferences discussed during my consultation, have still ended up approaching my hair with one-size-fits all techniques used with all their clients. For this reason, I've experienced a bit of damage in the past. But not here. I was provided with an attentive consultation and my hair was managed exactly the way I hoped. In fact, I've never been to a salon in the area that took such care in the overall combing, blow-drying and styling in general as far as mitigating the heat used on your hair. I was definitely pleased and my hair was too! Arielle did my color service and Linda (owner) was my stylist. They both were extremely warm and personable and did a fantastic job with my hair. I don't go to the salon that often but I'm happy to say I found a new salon him for my future visits. Highly recommended!! I read all the reviews on yelp and I decided that for my drastic hairstyle change I would go to this salon and I'm thoroughly happy with my decision! From the moment I called for an appointment and pricing, until the moment I walked out the door I received top notch service. I sent in pictures of the taper cut and color I wanted and Linda definitely delivered. It was so much better than I ever expected. By the time my cut and color was done I couldn't believe how my 4c curls were popping!!! So much so, that I decided to skip a twist out and rock my new style as a wash and go. My 4c hair was VERY badly damaged when I walked in. So the fact that Linda brought my curls back to life is nothing short of amazing. Throughout the haircut, Linda was awesome and patient answering my questions as she went along. She cut a little of my hair at a time to ensure I got the exact look I wanted. She also nailed the color and highlights perfectly! The salon has a great atmosphere, very clean, nice decor, great music, friendly stylists, and everyone who came in left with their hair looking gorgeous...including me. Linda gave me a cup of tea during my services and a quick shoulder massage before I left. She is AWESOME. The other reviews said they are pricey, but actually for natural hair, they are pretty much the same as other salons. Micro Bomb Twists by Sheena... I absolutely love my bomb twists! Definitely getting alot of compliments on this style. My service included a wash, a yummy 20 minute deep conditioning treatment under steamer and micro bomb twist done on wet hair. Sheena putting the twists on wet hair is pretty brilliant as your natural hair will coil with the extensions. My hair feels so weightless! It's so light that it literally feels like I have nothing on my head. I was so hyped after Sheena installed the first few twists. Lol! I KNEW the end result would be fabulous! These twists are super easy to manage. I can wash and condition as needed, the longer I wear them the more natural they will continue to look annnnd these babies will last a good 3-4 months! YES! That's what Mama needed, less time to worry about her hair. I cannot say enough good things about my experience at Rachel Joyce Organic Salon. I decided that I would go to a salon to get a wash, trim and layers. I picked this salon and Ashley was my stylist. She was so sweet and reassured me that I was in good hands. She asked me if I was tender headed which I am so she was very gentle. She also answered all my questions and made me feel very comfortable. Salon was very clean and there were snack and drinks for the costumers. Prices were right in my budget. I have natural hair and get my hair straightened and trimmed about once every 3 months. Past hair dressers couldn't get my hair straight so I only wore the style for a day. Justin colored, straightened, and clipped my ends and my hair lasted for three days. After a scheduling error at my regular salon left me without an appointment, I turned to yelp. I called about a dozen salons to find one that does locs (note to hair salons in the area - seriously?! Natural hair is more than blowouts, and don't get me started on all of those who can't even do Black hair). Lucky me that Sheena was in that day, and able to fit me in within the hour. My hair looks and smells great. It was good to have a set of fresh eyes on my hair, as I think she spotted some potential problems that my usual stylist overlooked. The salon is really big on the health of your hair - she gave me some great pointers. Prices are reasonable. I watched clients with a variety of hair textures leaving happy. Linda and Sheena were very hospitable - offering water or tea, snacks, and even finding a Sam Smith station after another client started talking about him. I don't know if I'm ready to leave my slightly bougie regular salon, but I'm SO glad they are another local option! read more

I have seen the same stylist since moving to DC last summer; however, I was in a pinch a few weeks ago, and decided to try out this salon due to the glowing reviews and flexible times. The salon manager (Linda) did reach out beforehand for a consultation, but unfortunately I was unable to connect with her prior to my appointment. My first appointment (6/9) was great - I had an early appointment, and my stylist was very attentive and kindly addressed my concerns about some minor shedding I was experiencing. I was very pleased about my blowout and style. Since I had such a positive experience, I scheduled another appointment on 6/24, for a protein treatment, trim, blowout, and style. I was paired with a junior stylist (for some reason, you are not able to request a specific stylist online), who was kind but clearly not as familiar with what she was doing. Over 3 hours later, I was left with hair that I was not happy with - the cut was fine but the style was not what I asked for. As I checked out, the salon manager sensed my dissatisfaction, and offered to fix up my style. She was able to successfully do so, showing the stylist the proper technique, but I was worried about having another round of heat on my hair. I understand that everyone needs to learn and gain experience, but looking back I wish I had the chance to request someone more experienced to handle to my hair. Afterwards, I began to notice how over-processed my hair was. My hair began breaking off just by running my fingers through it - I've been natural for the past 5 years and I've NEVER had this happen. My hair had a lingering burnt smell to it, and for the past week or two I've had so much breakage that I may as well be coming out of a relaxer. I really wanted this salon to work out, but after my last experience I don't see myself coming back. I visited the salon based on previous Yelp reviews and was pleasantly surprised with my experience. My stylish was Dani, who was very professional and offered her expert advice on my natural hair. I received a shampoo, cut, blow dry, flat iron and style. OMG....I LOVED MY HAIR!!! I was also delighted that I was in and out of the salon in 90 minutes :) I transitioned to natural hair 4 years, and finally found a stylist to tame my 4C hair. I just attempted to schedule an appointment with Dani and was informed she is no longer with Rachel Joyce Organic Salon.....NOOOOOOO :(********* Don't get me wrong, the salon itself was nice and had a warm ambience; I however was impressed by the services provided by Dani. I booked an appointment mid January for Thursday March 31st (it seems this salon gets fully booked very quickly), which is today, only to get a text message last night at around 8 pm (google says they close at 3:30 on Wednesdays) saying that my appointment had been cancelled due to a shortage of staff. I'm sorry but I simply don't believe that...I requested a day off work specifically for the appointment to have my hair done for an important upcoming dinner on the weekend. For them to cancel it very last minute when I had just been sent a message to confirm the appointment earlier in the week, which I did, was not something I was expecting. I believe my appointment was actually cancelled to free up a space for another client, probably a VIP or regular. I hadn't been to the salon in over a year, needless to say, my ends needed attention. I arrived five minutes prior to my scheduled appointment and was welcomed into a warm, organized, and very clean salon. It was my first time meeting Danielle, and I absolutely love her! My shampoo rivaled any massage I've ever had. That blowout though?? OMG, I was in a trance. I mean it felt so wonderful! She handled my natural hair with more care than I typically do, which was fantastic. Even though I lost over an inch of hair in the trim (my fault, not hers), I left with the softest, bounciest and smoothest hair of LIFE! PLUS, my hair didn't revert or get frizzy for 2 whole weeks! I've found a new hair home and look forward to my next appt. (this Thursday actually :) Their website allows you to book services online which is very convenient. The consultation service (upload a pic of your hair and a pic of a style you'd like), is a nice touch too. I used it and received a call (prior to my appointment) from Linda who talked to me about her recommendations. There is no hard selling of unneeded services. I left with my hair identical to the style that'd I'd chosen! *If you take the Metro, I believe Columbia Heights is the closest station. I found Rachel Joyce after exhaustive searching for a DC salon that uses Organic Color Systems, since I needed a root touchup on my dyed blonde hair and my super coarse/dry/wavy hair can't tolerate peroxide. Linda did a really wonderful job toning down the brassiness my blonde had taken on over eight weeks of showers/shampoos and was able to match my color beautifully. The complimentary deep conditioning treatment under the steamer was a surprising treat! I'm growing out an asymmetrical bob after shaving half my head, and wanted to get some more length before having to figure out what I'm "doing" with it, so I skipped the haircut for my first visit but will be setting up a consultation and hopefully going for the cut next time -- I'm assuming from her patience and consideration with the color that Linda will be cool to cut my curls dry and be flexible about their wild behavior rather than pretend I have straight hair that will cooperate with being cut wet. Hairstylist trust is hard to build with me, but I'm feeling pretty good about taking this relationship to the next level! Do speak up if you don't want a blowout post-color and wash: my hair really needs to air-dry and I've never had a blowout in my life that didn't make me want to cry at the result, but somehow I always forget to say something before it starts -- so I'm not holding this against Linda in any way, just saying remember to be clear about what your hair can and can't do, since you know it best! read more

I got an appointment with Tikia, the junior stylist. She is super nice and attentive, and Linda was supervising the whole time. Every time Tikia had a doubt, Linda would step in and help her out, they continued trimming and styling until my hair looked like the picture I showed them. It was only $50! I recently returned to my hometown of DC and searched for an Organic Salon, as I had an organic stylist in LA. Luckily, I found Rachel Joyce Salon. While it is taking some time to adjust to having moved cross country, I am thrilled to have found Linda, which means that my hair already feels right at home in DC! Linda is extremely warm and the atmosphere at the salon is friendly and relaxed. Since all of the products are organic, there aren't any of the chemical smells that are at salons that don't feature organic products. Most importantly, Linda really takes her time to give serious attention to making sure my hair looks and feels fantastic. I've never had anyone give me a blowout in order to make certain my hair is cut with absolute precision, but she does it. While I've not tried the other stylists at Rachel Joyce, I am confident they are excellent as well, because I see how great everyone else looks when they walk out of here. I used a living social coupon which made it a great deal. Paying full price would still have been worth it, but more of a stretch for my budget. Danielle was very warm and professional, and she did a great job. She explained the different products she was using and how to take better care of my hair at home. I especially love knowing that all the products are organic and safe for my hair/scalp. I've never been in a salon before that even offers you water, let alone tea or wine! They also had a container of cookies by the door, although I didn't try them. But it's so nice to have these extra touches - you can tell they care about their clients. I also got a complimentary steam conditioning, which was such a relaxing experience, and even a little shoulder rub after Danielle was done blow drying my hair. Most amazing hair experience ever today. Linda is very attentive! She performs a consultation upon arrival. The shampoo (the main reason I get my hair done) was so exceptional! Then (my favorite part) she gives you a deep tissue scalp massage while conditioning! All of the products are Organic too FYI (bonus) The salon is very clean and I swear the music that was playing was the best of R&B on the planet lol After she gave me a blow out from the Michelle Obama Gawwwdddds themselves she gave me a massage on my shoulders to end this very relaxing experience. After a seriously heinous dye job from another stylist, I made an appointment with Linda to rectify it. She did a wonderful job at securing the color I wanted and I've been receiving compliments nonstop. Sheena retwisted my locs and I love her painless clipless retwist method. She's gained a loyal client. All of the products that they use are natural and smell amazing. They're pricey, but worth it. The atmosphere and service are great. read more

I had a great experience with stylist, Ashley. She had a very pleasant personality; she explained what she was going to do to my hair and handled my 4c hair with care. I also loved that she turned me to the mirror as she trimmed my hair so that I could see exactly what she was doing as she explained it and how much she was trimming. I arrived a few minutes early for my appointment and waited for 15 minutes until someone asked me what I was getting done and who my hairdresser was. When I told the lady that asked me, she was concerned and contacted the hairdresser who was late 15 minutes. I asked her what was happening and she said that my hairdresser was on an important call. When I told her that I was leaving, she asked me if I wanted to reschedule, I said no, thank you! I l went back to my usual hair salon in Dupont Circle and I am happy that I did because they did a great job and treated me really well. read more
