I had an amazing experience! I'm extremely picky about who does my hair. Julissa was amazing! She took her time with washing it thoroughly (felt amazing) and blow drying. The thing that i really appreciated was how she trimmed my hair. Amazing job overall. Great customer service. Will definitely be coming back!

Huge shout out to Ashley for these beautiful twists and her amazingly fast hands. I miscalculated how long twists like this would take and I was up against the clock to pick my daughter up from school about 30mins away from the salon, but I let Ashley know and she worked super hard to get me out of the chair ASAP and with beautiful results to boot! Thank you, Ashley. And thanks to Regina for another wonderful shampoo and the gentlest finger detangle anyone has ever done on this thick mane of mine! Shout out to the young woman at the front desk who expedited the payment process so that I could leave as soon as Ashley finished, too. Love this salon and looking forward to my next visit.

I was ridiculously apprehensive about allowing anyone to touch my hair after 3 years of being natural. I've NEVER let anyone touch it, not even my mom. However, I knew I was in desperate need of a both a serious detangle and a trim. I'm visiting from Vegas where there is no natural hair love and someone suggested this place. I was happy to look on their website and seeing them offering natural hair services for just what I needed: a detangle, deep conditioner and blow out and trim. Despite being nervous about the blow out as I've never had heat on my hair, I made a next day appointment with Jalessea. My hair was extremely tangled and Jalessea was incredibly patient and thorough, giving me tips to avoid the tangled mess I'd got myself into and stopping occasionally to ask how I was or if I was in pain. The exact opposite, in fact, she was so gentle I nearly fell asleep. After the detangle, she proceeded to wash and deep condition my hair (with the most amazing scalp massage ever I might add) and gave me some water to drink as I waited for my deep condition to steam. Once it came time to blow dry, Jalessea sectioned out each part of my hair, and detangled once more before twisting my hair into Bantu knots so she could dry it in sections. She made me feel very comfortable and afterwards my hair was so beautiful! She trimmed it perfectly, making sure everything was even where it needed to be and finished everything off with a shoulder massage. (What?! - Oh yes girl, a massage.) The process was so incredibly smooth, and she was never impatient or rude even though my appointment ran a little over on account of my tough detangle. This place made me so incredibly happy. It is definitely worth the flight. Thank you so much Jalessea. You're my superhero.

This is probably the best hair salon I've been to. From the online consultation to my actual appointment everything was very easy. I loved the salon itself, clean and practical, they also had complimentary snacks, tea and water! Both stylists there were so polite and mine kept me informed with everything she was doing. I plan on going back . Great prices, this is the place to go!

I came to RJOS on December 20, 2017 with very high expectations given the good reviews. I asked for dark red highlights and a curly cut. The stylist Linda cut a huge amount off my hair (way more than I asked), and was extremely uneven. I received patchy highlights that eventually turned bleach blonde because the color and toner she used didn't work. If you have natural curly hair, stay FAR away from this salon! I left with patchy highlights, an uneven cut, and my hair was weighed down with an excessive amount of product. The salon is clean and the stylist was nice, but I would never come here again. Take your $200 elsewhere to people who know how to properly cut and curly hair. Left photo was how I came in, middle was the final product and right was the color it eventually turned. Stay away!

I am totally in LOVE with two of the stylist at Rachel Joyce! My first experience at Rachel Joyce was with Ashley in May 2018 and that experience made Rachel Joyce my natural hair home. This salon is professional. They are about the business of healthy hair. Today I had my hair trimmed by Jalessea and it was fabulous. She does a great head massage while washing your tresses. There was no water splashed over my face, no water down my back, which means no wet clothing. She was gentle yet effective in detangling my zigzags and coils... no head yanking, pulling, snatching, or tugging. The stretching/blowdrying process was just as gentle and effective. She showed me what needed to be trimmed BEFORE to started cutting and she only trimmed what needed to be removed. I walked out of Rachel Joyce a very happy client with a fresh trim in two braids. Jalessea thank you for another FABULOUS natural hair experience.

Washed, conditioned, blow dried, and flat ironed by Mia.

This place was recommend to me by a coworker so I filled out the online consultation and got a same day appointment with Mia (so awesome)! I received a wash, condition, blow dry, flat iron, and style. It was around $69 and totally worth it. This was my first time coming to a salon like this being that I'm mixed with black and white but my curly hair's texture is more on the whiter side. I absolutely love what Mia did with my hair and how healthy it looks and feels. I will definitely be back. Not only did Mia take the time to listen to what I wanted done with my hair and do it, she was so knowledgeable in her craft and has me so excited to come back in 8 weeks!!

Hi, I was excited to try the Rachel Joyce salon. I found it odd that you can't speak to anyone and all communication has to be done via text or email--especially in the hair industry. That said, I went with it and made an appointment for last Friday at 9.30am. At 11.30pm Thursday night I got a text canceling my appointment and asking if I could reschedule for the following Wednesday. I found it completely unacceptable to cancel my appointment less than 12 hrs before the appointment (especially given their own strict cancellation policy). The next morning I texted and asked if I could speak to someone regarding my appointment. I heard anything back. I sent multiple texts through the day and hours hours later was finally told someone would call me after the salon closed. I still heard from no one. This is very poor customer service. The fact that you can cancel someone at 11.30pm for a 9.30am appointment via text message is not the way to run a business. Just a fair warning to anyone out there looking for "old school" customer service where you can speak to someone and . This is not the salon for you. Update: I understand that emergencies happen, you ha d missed the point. I would have appreciated a call to try to resolve the issue. I just expected common courtesy and better customer service.

Before and after my trim. I had a lot of damage ends.

I've been natural for two years and I haven't been to the hair salon. One because I've been watching natural horror salon stories on YouTube and because I didn't want heat damage. I decided that I would go to a salon to get a wash, trim and layers. I picked this salon and Ashley was my stylist. She was so sweet and reassured me that I was in good hands. She asked me if I was tender headed which I am so she was very gentle. She also answered all my questions and made me feel very comfortable. Before she washed my hair she let me know what exactly she was going to do. The actual wash was good very relaxing and soothing. Then she blow dried my hair and did an excellent trim. Overall I enjoyed the salon experience! Would recommend this place and go here for another trim in the future.

Micro Bomb Twists by the lovely and talented Sheena at Rachel Joyce Organic Hair Salon!
    Kandice S.

Micro Bomb Twists by Sheena... I absolutely love my bomb twists! Definitely getting alot of compliments on this style. My service included a wash, a yummy 20 minute deep conditioning treatment under steamer and micro bomb twist done on wet hair. Sheena putting the twists on wet hair is pretty brilliant as your natural hair will coil with the extensions. My hair feels so weightless! It's so light that it literally feels like I have nothing on my head. I was so hyped after Sheena installed the first few twists. Lol! I KNEW the end result would be fabulous! These twists are super easy to manage. I can wash and condition as needed, the longer I wear them the more natural they will continue to look annnnd these babies will last a good 3-4 months! YES! That's what Mama needed, less time to worry about her hair. I cannot say enough good things about my experience at Rachel Joyce Organic Salon. The staff, atmosphere, quality of products and services are amazing! I will definitely be back for more.:) Happy New Year! -K

This review is for Sera…read more I completely understand that a stylist's time is valuable, and I know it's frustrating when clients are late. I also understand why my appointment needed to be rescheduled. My issue is not with the policy, it's with how I was treated. I was made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment I walked into the salon. I had a 12:45 p.m. appointment and called before leaving home to let the salon know I was running about 10 minutes late, which is their stated grace period. The receptionist told me she would let Sera know. At 12:56 p.m., when I was literally one minute away from the salon, I received a call saying Sera could no longer see me because I was late, and she had back-to-back clients. While I was disappointed, I understood. I asked if I could still come in briefly to speak with Sera because I wasn't even sure I needed a full highlight service, and the receptionist agreed. When I arrived, Sera immediately told me I needed to reschedule and seemed unwilling to discuss my hair beyond commenting that the back was "really dark" and explaining that she had returning clients scheduled after me. She didn't seem to know or care that I was a returning client. Sera had done my hair in February, and I came back because I had really liked her work. Not recognizing me in and of itself is not a big problem--I know a lot of people sit in her chair--but it made the interaction feel impersonal and left me wondering if she'd even prepared for my appointment. I was fully prepared to work with Sera and the receptionist to find another date and time that fit both of our schedules. Instead, both were unhelpful, dismissive, and rude. This experience was especially difficult because I have pretty severe alopecia areata that, thankfully, is now well controlled with medication, allowing me to grow most of my hair back. That said, I wore a wig for five years after losing most of my hair, so finding a stylist I trust is still an incredibly vulnerable and anxiety-producing experience. Every time I see someone new, I have to explain my hair loss and why I prefer a lived-in color that doesn't require overly frequent trips to the salon. I chose to return to Sera because I thought I had found someone I could continue seeing. Instead, I left feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and genuinely upset. I walked out of the salon, called my husband, and cried like a reprimanded little girl. I am a 35-year-old grown-ass woman. Policies are important, and I respect them. Kindness and professionalism are just as important. Had the situation been handled with empathy and respect, I would have happily rescheduled. Instead, I left feeling less like a person and more like a time slot or a dollar sign. It seems like Sera may have enough clients that turning one away isn't a big deal, but I was respectful, cooperative, and ready to work with her to find another appointment. I deserved that same courtesy and respect in return.

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

Except for French woman named Sophie who can do decent cuts, there is no any other stylists skilled in precision haircuts. Came here and one of their top stylists gave me the worse cut I've ever had in my life. I've had to wait more than 6 months to grow my hair out from the horrible layers he did on me. He literally just chopped my hair up. The bottom of my hair in the back was an upside down triangle! Every stylist knows it should be straight across and maybe just a bit rounded on the sides! Any salon would have easily provided a (normal) soft, feminine, sexy, natural cut that is subtle perhaps at different skill levels. This guy clearly had no concept of how to cut (straight) hair because his clueless messes get disguised easily in wavy or curly hair or in a blow dry with curling brush.

UPDATE: Jillian threatened me with legal action for writing this review…read more After being a loyal client of Jillian for hair cuts and Adrian for brow waxing since at least 2016 until 2018, before I moved back to San Francisco and to Plano, Texas, I returned to NoVA/DC - moving on election day in Nov 2020 - because it seemed like NoVA/DC was being pragmatic about covid-19 regulations vs. the two extremes in CA & TX. I messaged with Jillian prior to my move on 11/3/2020 to learn how Karma was handling covid-19 regulations, because there were no capacity restrictions in Texas, so I hadn't had my hair cut or colored for 7-months - the longest I've ever gone. I saw her and Adrian on 11/22/2020, and even brought them both "welcome home" rose gold goodie bags with cards, Sugarfina rose gummies & chocolate caramels, and masks. I knew the global pandemic was especially hard on the beauty industry, because my aesthetician in San Francisco & her mom had to close 2 of their 3 salons in the Bay Area - in spite of being open since the 1970s. I was therefore sensitive to this fact. Which is why it was even more bizarre when I learned on social media in December 2020 that Jillian was moving to Dallas, Texas in January 2021, after she listened to my stories about Texas and pumped me for specifics about salons there, and at no point told me about her move. I later learned she told some clients about her move and not others, and that she expected Karma to tell me about it. However, the poor communication continued, given Karma never emailed me, the same way I never receive receipts for my "contact-less" transactions, and they still ask for my physical credit card, in spite of verifying its existence on file. The poor communication and the broken technology are both annoying. I let that go, and worked with Jillian - via social media - to book hair cut appointments with her for the next 6 months on Saturdays, however even when we agreed on my preferred time slot (4pm), she booked them for 5pm, because that worked best for her, she said. Not very friendly customer service for loyal clients! She also initially told the receptionist she was booked in February, which initiated our social media messages, requiring me to book with her directly. Then magically she's staying late for me! In parallel, as to the quality of Jillian's cuts, I started seeing her when she used to place a placemat on my shoulders to ensure her cuts were even, and I was always happy with how even they were over the years. That said, I've been very clear - including bringing drawings and instructions from my stylists in San Francisco, who do editorial work for Nordstrom & Gap, and trained in London & globally - that I don't like "shelves" of layers in my hair, I prefer long layers, I don't like corners, and I prefer professional cutting techniques to remove weight vs. thinning shears that butcher the ends of my hair without expertise. Jillian uses thinning shears, and my last cut included all the things I don't want mentioned above. It was, however, even at the bottom. I let this go, because I've had uneven cuts in DC, and I knew that by August 2021, I would need to find a new stylist anyway. I did, however, vocalize my concerns to Jillian yesterday & today about the inaccuracy of rapid covid tests, in parallel with Texas removing their mask mandate, while she travels back & forth between a covid hotspot & DC over the coming months, and she decided to cancel my appointments as a result. That's fine. I'd rather not contract covid, which is exactly why I left Texas. Which brings me to the brow waxes. Due to schedule availability, I booked an eyebrow wax with Erwin in December 2020, and his brow waxes are better - and more expensive - than Adrian's. Erwin's shape was superb, and similar to my favorite brow artist in San Francisco, who's regularly voted best brows. However, Erwin did not pluck or wax the hairs in between my brows, which I had to do myself. He also told me the gold dab of eye shadow I placed in the center corners of my eyes made me look cross-eyed, which I found insulting, so I suggested he remove it if he found it distracting. He asked me who gave me that make-up guidance, and "if they were black". Was that a racist comment? And why was he criticizing me, his paying client?!? I tried booking a brow wax in January 2021 with either Erwin or Adrian, and learned they were both at home quarantining with covid. Surprisingly, when I saw Adrian in February 2021, he criticized my brows, saying how much they needed a wax. Obvi! Why do he and Erwin feel it's OK to criticize their clients? Furthermore, they were uneven. Shockingly, I pointed this out to Adrian, and he agreed that my left brow was taller than my right, and re-plucked, yet when I got home, I still had to fix myself, comparing to my photo of my best brows in San Francisco. He also over trimmed the end of my right brow. If you like being treated as a client, look elsewhere.

I still believe a full refund would've been the right thing to do, but you pick your battles. I appreciate the attempt to make this right although it still seems somewhat half-hearted. 4/27/18 Please look up "Zhen Lin" on yelp to see my review of the stylist who did my hair and more pics of the highlights she gave me. There was obviously a major misunderstanding. Why on earth anyone would want super blonde highlights on top of dark brown hair in 2018 is beyond me. This is not at all what I asked for. I asked for a natural looking balayage and showed Zhen literally four different pictures of examples I liked. I expressed that I really wanted the hair to look natural, blended and not ombre'd or striped. Both Zhen and the manager refused to try to make it right when I expressed my disappointment in my hair. Neither offering to help fix it, nor a refund. I had to pay $250 for something that was the opposite of what I wanted. After begging in person for them to help, I left another pleading phone message tonight for them to help me fix this mess, or refund my money as I can only imagine what a color correction will cost at another salon. I absolutely hate writing bad reviews about people and wouldn't have posted this if I didn't feel completely swindled, disrespected and brushed aside. I'm really hoping they'll get back to me, and I'll update this review if they decide to do the right thing. In the meantime, I'm beyond disappointed and disgusted!
