First off. During a pandemic he himself isn't wearing a mask, and even makes customers take off their mask and informed us that he "already had corona". I had paid for surf lessons today, and sadly did not receive them. I was told to arrive at 8am driving from DTLA. Literally 3 mins before, Tony tells me move it back to 8:15 then ask where I am. I say 1 mile away. He then says okay 8:30. So now I'm stuck wondering around a beach alone when he is running late. Once we finally meet for the surf lesson at 8:30, he doesn't even start the lesson until 10:30. And by start it at 10:30, I mean with other customers present & even the owner of the building coming in & me have to awkwardly listen to two people go back & forth about rent coming up short for the month. Once the owner of the entire building leaves, Tony then goes on to continue to assist every customer that came in during my training session. And even told me after a guy & his kids came in and he sold them all fins..... that he oversold them to the customers....... as a small business owner I don't understand how people can treat one another this way, especially during a pandemic when he himself also forces customers to taking cash out so he doesn't have to "let me go to waist & be thrown away to wherever" as he states. It's now going on 4pm. And I am just now leaving Malibu, within any completed lessons from Tony. But during the process he did feel the need to say things such as "I'm not gay, but I've always had a fantasy about sucking a big black cock", and said a few other sexual & racist remarks. But after getting cursed out & disrespected. I didn't feel safe anymore, especially with the drugs that he informed me his other employee was doing in the bathroom. Tony really took care of us as we were not familiar with paddleboarding or with Malibu. He took his time to include instruction and give us some excellent tips not only with how to paddle board, but how to get the most out of our time, and insider optimal spots in the area. He is incredibly knowledgeable and offered us anything we would think of needing. We spent a half a day (you need at least that much time bc there is so much to see and it is so pleasurable to relax out there). We saw many schools of fish, lobsters, dolphins, rays, and even A SEA TURTLE, which I have never seen in this area. A kayaker told us we might see a whale. The water was so clear! It turns out paddleboarding was better than snorkeling for visibility; the views were out of this world. An epic and memorable day. One more reason for the five stars is Tony's availability. He answered right away and took us out in the early morning before anyone else was even awake or open - he is 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Tony is AWESOME! Me and a friend were visiting from Atlanta and wanted to give surfing a shot while we were there. We knew we were on a budget so expected to just rent some boards, without a lesson, and mess around in the water until we (hopefully) got up. When Tony asked us if we had surfed before and we said no, he showed us how to get up on his simulator. After an hour of an unpaid lesson, Tony himself drove us to the best spot to surf and after successfully riding many waves, picked us up a couple hours later and brought us back. Originally scheduled for a noon time lesson, but someone bailed on Tony for their 10 o'clock. I just got my rental and headed from the airport(LAX), about 15 minutes after he texted me the info. I couldn't get there until 11:20 or so, but his flexibility and mine made it work. He explained how the water gets choppier in the afternoon and morning lessons are ideal. Bam, 20 min. or so, hammered out some of the basics on the beach, a little repetition to get comfortable and we were off to ride some waves. Safety first(cover your head), lead foot for gas, back foot to brake...too simple. Ride the wave down w/ your "brake foot" lean forward and smooth it out...you're surfing like a pro. Great instruction, that turned into a breezy afternoon. It's a good work out, but if you have the conditioning of a water polo player you won't be spent after two hours...otherwise. My son and I took a lesson with Tony and had a great time. Tony was a great teacher and covered a lot of information and training in the shop including time on the 'surf simulator' this gave us a great head start when we hit the waves just down the beach. Tony coached us all along the way and worked his tail off swimming between us to help us get on the waves and was very generous with his time. Yesterday, at the beginning of a planned 40 mile bike ride on PCH with Team In Training, I discovered that my son's bike was missing the screw holding the seat in place. Because of a Google glitch, I ended up calling Radfish Malibu, a surf shop, looking for help repairing the bike. Tony was so gracious on the phone and told us to come by and he'd help us out. When we got there, he was finishing helping a young family get set for a first Malibu surfing adventure. Then, he dug through his spare parts and found a good solution for our problem. Tony has a big heart and would give the shirt off of his back if he could to help you. I was at the store today and I saw him help a customer who was looking for ear plugs for water sports keep sand and water out of his ears. Tony did not have any, but, he told the elderly man that he could use some surf board wax and roll it up and put it into his ears. He cut some off and gave it to the man for free. He told him to let it sit in the sun and get warm and soft. In this day in age, most people are selfish and do not take the time to help another fellow human being. But, Tony is an old school guy and he helps people without thinking about himself. He loves what he does and is an excellent teacher. I was in his store today between 2:15 pm until about 3:25 pm pm and he let a young man work in his store while Tony had to go and give a swim lesson today. Tony has a big heart and let the young man work on his energy project while Tony went to work. He goes above and beyond. A great teacher who has perfected the lesson he gives. He is extremely patient and has great insights to share, and he gives you great adjustments while you are on the water. You will be totally at ease, and he will bring the best out of you. Tony's AWESOME! I've never even been near a surf board before and Tony had me up and riding waves within 30 mins. He focused on safety and technique first, which made me feel really comfortable and secure. He's a hands-on instructor who spent the entire time with me in the water. I had no idea that one of the hardest aspects of surfing was paddling out (boy was I tired)...Tony literally jumped on the back of my board to help me paddle into position to make sure I caught as many waves as possible. His pointers were super helpful in getting me up and riding the waves all the way in. What a thrill! In addition to being an effective instructor, he's a GREAT guy and I enjoyed spending the day with him. Tony also teaches SUP and kite surfing, so I will definitely be back to learn more from him. I work with Wounded Veterans. We use experiential therapies to help with PTSD and TBI. I had a group of EOD Warriors (think Hurt Locker) coming to Malibu and they wanted to Paddleboard. Several had prosthetic legs and other severe injuries. Tony received my call on Sunday and said yes instantly. He was so accommodating and greeted the warriors with a huge warm smile. He had great equipment and a wonderful assistant. He stressed safety and gave a lot of information on the ocean conditions. It was a high surf day. Tony and his assistant helped the warriors navigate the surf and paddle out to calmer waters. His own physical strength and expertise was so apparent and eased our concerns for keeping the men safe. It was a glorious day for all. I can't thank Tony enough for providing such a fun and healing day for our amazing warriors. I booked surfing lessons with Tony based on an article I'd read in a magazine. His rates and reviews were good. The lesson was for 5 of us, me, my sister and her family, ranging in age from 11-54. Although we are a fairly athletic bunch, I was the only one who had ever tried surfing in the past. Tony was very personable from the moment we met at his store. He wanted to know where we were from, what our names were, and a little about each of us. In turn he shared a little about himself as the lesson went on. He started with the basics, ensuring that we all knew how to pop up on the board, had us talk about it, practise it, video tape ourselves doing it, and told us he wouldn't let us out on the ocean until we were proficient at it. (This was a little concerning at first cause I thought we might never get out there!!). In addition to the basics of 'how to get up', Tony talked a lot about safety to make sure we were going to be safe out in the water. He has a lot of 'number 1 rules'. He was especially concerned about my young niece, and wanted to make sure her first experience was a positive one, and that she would love it and not be afraid to surf again. When we finally made it out into the ocean, Tony was very 'hands on' (in a good way...lol). He took each of us out one at a time for the first couple of rides, and made sure we stood up on the board and rode a wave. For me, this was great. The last time I'd had a lesson, and tried to surf, I never got up on the board - and I was at least 10 years younger then!! Tony wanted me to keep trying, as I didn't quite make it all the way in to shore, but I was so happy that I rode the board for a little while that I didn't really care - but he did and that was cool. I kinda felt like I was letting him down, but I had to stop cause I was getting tired. Everyone else in the group - both the adults and the kids - were all successful! It was a great day. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because of time management. As a teacher I know the importance of timing in lessons :). Our 2 hour lesson, turned into almost 5. I guess this could be looked at as a positive, in that Tony was more concerned about making sure we learned how to surf, and not worried about how long it took. He even offered to leave his boards at the beach with us for a little while if we wanted to keep practising. He was a very knowledgable, sensitive instructor, and I felt completely safe out on the water with him. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone who wants to learn how to surf! read more
