In fact, everytime I capture a wedding in Redwoods NP, I come to this spot. The rooms definitely feel older, but are so cozy and have everything you need. The property is beautiful and surprisingly peaceful for being in town. The hot tubs and sauna are probably the best part, second only to the unique setting and rich gardens. Full hook ups. Bathrooms are relatively clean. This is where it gets weird. I wanted to shower one evening. When I entered the steamy bathhouse I discovered a man partially clothed laying on the floor in the shower-hot water running. I immediately asked if he was okay. He said nothing but closed the shower curtain. I suddenly felt creeped to take my shower. But I did so watching my back. I told the gals in the office what I saw. They did not act surprised as though it was a common occurrence. What the hell is that?? Another thing I noticed about this park; there appeared to be some rather permanent campers lurking throughout the park. Perhaps years. Potted plants, junk piled around their campers, and dog fencing is not an overnight thing. The overall vibe of this place saddened me.

This delightful "cottage" is really a suite adjacent to the main house. It's whimsically decorated and has some nice touches, including a private entry and courtyard, plush linens, an electric fireplace for ambiance, an interesting selection of books, a wide variety of coffee and teas in the little kitchenette, which also included a reusable grocery bag for gathering provisions at the nice store just steps from this place. While well appointed, the small place is a bit overwhelmed by a lot of furniture, including a couple big pieces, leading to the space feeling a little cramped. But all in all, a comfortable stay for sure. Even the beautifully tiled little shower was surprisingly excellent. One down side: when we arrived and departed the first time during our stay, a vehicle was parked in the driveway, which is the only access to the cottage door. It was very challenging to get past the car, either having to practically cling to the car to avoid getting snagged by the rose bushes on either side, or having to tromp through the yard and then try to find our way through said rose bushes. This access issue was really the only problem we encountered during our stay.

It's a cute neighborhood with Victorian houses; our dog loved the flowers, plants, and a little park nearby; a wonderful organic co-op is diagonally across the street; and RCC is within walking distance, just blocks from the quaint, sweet downtown shopping district. Happily, we unsuspectingly happened upon stunning protected marshlands on a morning walk, and we were close driving distance to prime redwood hiking and even sand dunes. This has been a small community gathering point since 1932, is located on the road named after it, in Dow's Prairie. The Grange Hall sits directly across the road from the Dow's Prairie school. The Monthly Pancake breakfast and Rummage sale are usually pretty good events and it serves as a fund raiser for the Grange. This community breakfast is the third Saturday of every month from 9 am till noon. With two choices for breakfast available - all meals include a juice and apple sauce - Large = 5$ (two eggs, two pancakes and breakfast meat of your choice and a morning beverage) and Small = 3$ (one egg and one pancake, breakfast meat and beverage) and children under the age of 3 (Three) eat for free - you can not beat free! The HISTORY: The charter was obtained on December 14, 1932. On January 18, 1933 Henry Miller was selected as the first Grange Master of Dow's Prairie Grange. Dow's Prairie Grange met at Clam Beach Hall on May 17, 1934 and was there until approximately 1942 when the current grange hall was built across from Dow's Prairie School. The land having been purchased for $50 from Hammond Lumber in 1938. The hall was partially built with recycled timber from lumber company buildings. This is a neat piece of Nor-Cal history behind the Redwood Curtain and is a cool building available for rental for special events and monthly on the 3rd Saturday morning has a fun community breakfast that is open to the public.
