In fact, everytime I capture a wedding in Redwoods NP, I come to this spot. The rooms definitely feel older, but are so cozy and have everything you need. The property is beautiful and surprisingly peaceful for being in town. The hot tubs and sauna are probably the best part, second only to the unique setting and rich gardens. If it was any other day we would have gotten up and walked out, but it being Valentine's Day we knew we how hard it would be to try to walk in anywhere else. It was so bad they comped our dinners. The staff here were truly exceptional--professional, kind, and hardworking. One employee in particular went above and beyond, reopening the kitchen just to help us get hot water for tea while we were waiting on laundry late at night. That level of hospitality really stood out. Our room was spotless and cozy, and we even felt comfortable enough to take baths here--something we didn't do at any other hotel. The laundry room was a huge bonus, even though it was pricey and required a separate key. Unfortunately, the machines had issues: one load (a towel for our bunnies' carrier) didn't ring out properly, and we had to wring it out by hand and still struggled to dry it completely after two cycles and even a blow dryer. We brought this up to the front desk, and they said they'd alert maintenance. The breakfast was another highlight--fresh, clean, and with healthy options, plus courtesy newspapers. Great communication overall from the staff, and we appreciated how easy it was to feel at home. That said, the surrounding area felt a little sketchy, and it was odd that there's no gated entry or on-site security, especially since the outer doors automatically lock after a certain hour and require key card access. It didn't feel unsafe inside the hotel, but the neighborhood did raise some questions. One awkward note: guests here didn't seem to understand pet boundaries. We had people approach and try to engage with our dog in elevators and enclosed spaces, which was uncomfortable. All in all, I give this place a 3.5 because hotel was a standout for cleanliness, comfort, and customer service.

It is dark inside and smells "old". Our room was nicely decorated in old Victorian. It was overlooking the corner of 2nd & C right over the Irish pub. Everything was clean and nice inside. Bathroom was small but well stocked with supplies. The issue is more with the area. We took a walk after we arrived through the marina and old town area and concluded that we didn't feel terribly safe. We decided to stay in after dark. There were plenty of homeless and very "sketchy" people walking around talking loudly to themselves, etc. Know the rooms have no air conditioning so the hosts opened a couple of windows facing C street, which we left open all night, hoping that street wouldn't be terribly noisy. Fortunately, the Irish pub below us closes around 9:00, and the Mexican restaurant across the street was the same. By 9:30 or so the street was very quiet with only the occasional car and lone, loud motorcycle around midnight. Also there is no TV in the room, so bring your own entertainment! The WiFi didn't work either. We couldn't find the WiFi the hosts provided on check in. Overall, this area of town is trying to revive and the hosts are trying to bring back this hotel. Just be aware!

Classic above store Victorian accommodations with full gourmet kitchen and 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (separated enough to not creep you out if you're staying with frisky friends or relatives). If you must you can have take-out from the decent (but really just townie pub fare) restaurant downstairs but you're in walking distance from some truly great restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and fabulous bagels. Then again, the downstairs restaurant has one of the better bloody mary's on the planet, although one of the spicy ones. The red velvet Victorian settee in the bay window overlooks the bay and you can watch everything below your floor disappear into the dense fog as you ignore the outside world for the cozy interior and dreamily disappearing exterior.

I have stayed at two of them: the Plaza Courtyard Stay and Rose Court Cottage. Plaza Courtyard was an absolutely enormous space, with a full kitchen, bedroom, living room, dining table, and large handicapped-accessible bathroom. When I checked in, we had to use a combination we had been given ahead of time in order to get into the courtyard and the room. There were numbers to call in case of emergency, but otherwise, I was on my own--which was fine with me. The location was excellent, right off the main plaza. There was free and very good wifi. The bed was very comfortable, and everything I needed was available. Rose Court Cottage was a different experience. It is a very small cottage attached to the owner's home. It does have a beautiful rose courtyard, but that courtyard adjoins the windows to the owner's home, and when the weather is nice she opens her windows, so there really isn't any privacy. In addition, there is a door in the bathroom that leads directly into the owner's home, and you can't lock it from the guest side. The cottage was very cute and well-appointed, with lots of books and travel guides, as well as free and good wifi. The cottage is across the street from the local market, which was very convenient, and a short walk from the downtown plaza. However, we were really weirded out by the close proximity to the owner. When she let us in and showed us around, she even said, "I'll just let myself out here" and walked out of our bathroom. All in all, both of these were good stays, with very comfortable beds and lots of the comforts of home, and a decent value. However, if I go back, I will choose the Plaza Courtyard for more privacy.

I stayed in two while visiting before permanently relocating to the area. Forest View was an amazing experience. Very private with a deck and beautiful views of the redwoods in the distance. I loved the gas stove and, although I didn't use them, all of the cooking amenities. Rose Cottage, however, was completely different. While it was very convenient, located directly across from the fabulous Wildberries Market, there was very little privacy, as the other reviewer noted. I felt quite strange showering, while I could hear other people cooking on the other side of the bathroom door. The space was very small and musty. I would highly recommend staying at Forest View and I'm curious about Gateway and Sweet Home Stay, which I imagine are closer in quality to Forest View.
