I found out about Rafael Floors from the great reviews they have. I was looking for carpet in my 3 bedrooms and hallway of my condo. I looked at a few places that didn't cut it. When I went to Rafael Floors and spoke with Robert Gomez, I was really impressed with his knowledge about flooring and carpeting. It was obvious he had decades of experience. After looking at the samples in my place for a week, I found the perfect carpet and color I wanted. Robert came over for measurements and an estimate. Everything had gone smoothly and professional to this point where in other places there were flags that would stop me cold, and I would stop the process and move on. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The whole selection and purchase process with Robert went smoothly, and they were ready to install the carpet before I was because I had some painting that needed to be done, and I had to delay them several times.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When I was finally ready, Juan and Douglas arrived on time to install the carpet. It was a two-day process, and I was really impressed how methodical they were. It was like they were putting together a puzzle they were really familiar with and each part was being sized and put in its place. I later found out that Rafael Floors has a lengthy training process for their installers that takes years. It starts with a 5-year apprentice program where they work under a journeyman installer before they can go out to install a carpet. Juan described to me what a momentous and serious occasion it was after 5 years to finally have a project of his own and being responsible for all the materials and making the customer happy. I expected better customer service with all these 5-star reviews. I came in to purchase a stair runner and I thought I was clear in explaining that I wanted the runner in one piece, NOT two. I was looking through remnants and passed over some others I liked better because they were not long enough for what I wanted. At no point was I told that the carpet I did choose would come in two pieces instead of one. When I picked up the runner a couple weeks later, it still was not communicated that it was in two pieces. My installer (hired separately) pointed this out to me only after I took it home. He was concerned that the seam would be visible and might curl over time, creating a tripping hazard. I returned to the store hoping to exchange the two pieces for one solid runner like I originally wanted. Instead, I was lectured on how to line up the two pieces and how to do the installation with two pieces lining up at the riser and tread. When I mentioned my concern about the edges curling over time, the woman at the desk (she never stated her name) just said, "It won't happen if your installer is competent." The issue was that I did not receive the product I thought I had purchased. I came into the store again hoping to return the product for store credit towards a custom-cut 20ft stair runner but instead of attempts to make it right, I was told I just didn't understand how runners work and made to feel like an idiot for even asking. Maybe that's true, but it could've been communicated without the rude, dismissive attitude. Perhaps she was having a bad morning. I just wish she didn't take it out on me. I left feeling so uncomfortable and unvalued as a customer. What a waste of time and money. Btw, even though she assured me the carpet would be fine installed as two pieces and "you won't even see the seam," it's definitely visible. And it looks pretty bad in my opinion. read more

I don't live in the area and was dependent on finding a local company that could re-carpet the home and do a buff and coat on the hardwood floors. Steve Villa came over, took measurements and then provided input on the type of carpet and colors would work best. He also quoted the hardwood repair work. I visited their large showroom to finalize the carpet decision. Steve came onsite for the removal/installation to make sure that this team understood what was required. Steve visited again on short notice when I learned that we needed to add carpet to a stairway. He found a remnant that worked perfectly. It was installed the next day. We recently had our office flooring redone and were extremely pleased with a job well done by Rafael Floors. We removed all of the carpet from the entryway, 4 offices, the reception area and our copy room and replaced it with a high quality laminate, that looks and sounds like real wood. We rent our office space and the installers came across some weird and unusual past installations that they were able to nicely work around and provide great fixes for. ie walls and cabinetry installed on top of old carpet. I had hardwood floors installed in my home four years ago and still get compliments. However there is more to this story than just five stars and a quick comment. Another flooring company came into my home and quoted me one price verbally and I foolishly accepted it without receiving a written quote. After learning I was leaving town with guests staying while gone and needed the job done within one week, he tore out the existing carpeting and then increased the price by 50% claiming that was the original price he quoted. He then refused to finish the job unless I agreed. I called his bluff and asked him to leave my house and frantically searched for another vendor. Thank God for Rafael Flooring who came to my rescue. This was not our first time working with Rafael floors but the first time for a refinishing job. Owner Steve was very easy to work with; came to our home in a timely manner to check out the job, measure etc. Since I was concerned that refinishing might not work for the engineered floor he came back with his long-time refinisher and they determined that there would be enough wood for one time refinishing. I wouldn't have trusted the job to just anyone; a little too much sanding and you'd hit the subfloor. But given the Raul's experience, I felt confident. The price was the best of three places I compared with and the final refinishing looks lovely. read more

We had what we considered a large project for our home here in Novato. We've been here for 4 years now and we knew that we wanted to change the very dated carpet and also put down some hardwood floors on our stairs and hall which were previously carpeted. There were three levels that needed to get done and had to match an existing set of wood stairs .We knew that this would totally change the look of our home. We weren't sure of who to use but we have a super nice neighbor named Ron who was the previous owner of Rafael Floors in San Rafael. Steve "Great Guy" who is the current owner had worked for Ron and took over the business some years back.Theres a lot to be said when a business is passed down to another to carry on the work. Steve is the person who carried the torch! We met with Steve at the showroom. Really nice selection! Thank goodness my partner was with me. Way too many choices for me to choose from and we whittled it down to a short list of contenders for carpet selection and wood flooring. We went back and forth and Steve was always very forthcoming about the costs and the timing with a variety of options and suggestions. He understood the importance of all our needs and concerns. He adapted to our needs and I appreciate that. Steve brought Arturo who was going to be doing the crafting and installations of the floors and carpet. Arturo has a great eye for detail and takes a lot of pride in what he does. Arturo kept our home from a lot of dirt and dust as much as he could. Did the cutting outside or in the garage. I did not want our home looking like a disaster site. We also switched out the dated bathroom tile for something more contemporary. It also turned out great! Several years ago Rafael Floors refinished the hardwood in my living room. They did a fabulous job. I had a lot of damage from pet stains and not only did they replace the wood, but they sealed the underfloor to prevent it from happening again. Jack and the crew were so easy to work with. They left the place spotless every day. They moved the furniture out and then back in again. When a lock on my curio cabinet wouldn't work, someone came by to fix it and showed me that it was broken before it was moved and fixed it anyway. Now that's above and beyond! They just finished refinishing the hardwood in my two upstairs bedrooms which had been covered with carpet for many years. Due to a sewage flood, our carpet needed replacing. During our Covid-19 lockdown it was/is very difficult to find places which would allow a customer inside a store to actually examine the carpet samples. Luckily for us, Rafael floors-Abbey Carpet allowed us inside so could see their options.
