Iconic Music Venue & Nostalgic Dive Bar…read more If you are in the mood for a cold beer and great music, then take a scenic drive out to Devil's Backbone Tavern! It first operated as a stagecoach outpost & blacksmith shop. And it famously built the Tavern in Comal County during prohibition. It wasn't until the 1950s that a dance hall pavilion was added to the property. And while the tavern wasn't made famous through country songs, it remained a popular watering hole for the locals. Today, the new owners have helped revitalize the dance hall and brought about a renewed appreciation for this musical outpost. Some of the greatest singer/songwriters come to play at Devil's so be sure to check out the list of upcoming shows. So put Todd Snider in your playlist, check your GPS, and take a drive out to Fischer for a cold beer and great music! On a more personal note, I would love to see more listening room / storytelling type shows and album signing opportunities where artists can take advantage of the great acoustics and intimate space. We walked around the grounds and just talked. If you want to come here and just talk as you're getting to know someone, this is an absolutely gorgeous place for a date. The drinks were ok, not very strong. The minimal staff was very nice and accommodating. It almost felt like we had the whole place to ourselves during the evening on the weekday, but there were indeed others. It's just that this place is huge and everyone felt spread out. Anyway, I liked it.

A quick Yelp check showed good reviews so we pulled up. But, there were literally no cars out front of it. That made us reconsider a bit. We decided to look for something else, but we went into a small shop nearby to browse around. We asked the ladies behind the counter about a good local place to get lunch and they both said Savage's. We talked a bit and determined the cold weather and high winds had a lot to do with no one around and the food was actually very good, all be it bar food. The only negative thing said was not to get mixed drinks as they seemed weak. And that lined up with other reviews on Yelp. So over to Savage's we went. By now there were a few tables of people, but not much. I ordered naked wings and wifey had the hamburger salad. Service was quick. Wings were done well, nice and crispy, golden brown. Her hamburger salad was nicely done and the patty had that taste like my mom's from a cast iron skillet. Each had a beer and I tried a local craft, Devils Backbone. It was pretty good. Waiter/bartender said the weather most likely kept the crowd small, they were having live music later that night and should be packed. And there were as we passed back by about 7:30pm and it looked packed. In spring and early summer, I'm sure this place is jammed. Lots of outdoor seating, ground level and upstairs. The old adage rang true, don't judge a book by its cover.

Our server Keyoni was great, there were some hiccups with missed drinks a couple times, but overall he did great and the best that he could handling our big group. The views were super nice and they even had little seating areas in the turf area, which was perfect for our kids to play around after they ate. The food was amazing here, and I didn't have one bad bite! The queso and the guacamole in the Creek House chip trio was so good. The truffle parmesan fries were nice and crispy, and I loved the garlic aioli on the side. Even our kids' macaroni and cheese was delicious, I was eating the leftovers as a side with my own meal! I picked the smoked and shaved beef sandwich, which had really good flavor and very tender meat. I really liked the cucumber salad on the side because it was different than your typical side of fries or regular salad. It was light and refreshing! I had bites of the redfish and the pork chop also, which are two dishes that I wouldn't normally order myself but they were both amazing bites! It was the juiciest pork chop I had ever eaten before. I paired my meal with a house blackberry soda, which was refreshing. My only regret is that I didn't have room for dessert! Overall it was a great pick for a Friday night family dinner!

Live music in the background set the perfect ambience for the evening. Our server, Matt, made the whole experience -- no AI could have crafted a more perfect waiter. From start to finish, he was spot-on: his wine suggestions, his appetizer recommendation, and the wine pairing he chose for our main course were all perfect. It was disappointing to learn that the next day would be his last with the restaurant -- he was truly an asset. We'll be back next month, though whoever serves us next has a lot to live up to. The food itself was outstanding too -- perfectly seared shrimp and grits with sweet corn and blistered tomatoes, fried green tomatoes topped with crab and avocado, and a hearty steak sandwich with crispy fries. Every dish was as memorable as the service.

Yikes, this places has A LOT of hate! Yelp fam, y'all are cold blooded! I came here about two weeks…read moreago (the day before I went to the concert at Dickie's Arena). Getting to this venue isn't difficult but what is difficult is getting IN to the venue. Specifically, I had VIP parking but I still had to wait in a single lane to get into the parking lot for more more than 30 minutes. I literally missed the beginning of the show I was supposed to see because I was sitting in my car waiting for the police to direct the one lane of traffic to the general parking lot vs the venue parking lot. Once inside the venue, concert/event goers will see different lines for VIP check-in vs. regular check-in. As I was late to this concert and was VIP, I didn't necessarily have the same problems as the Yelpers who mentioned overly long waits to get in. Once I was in the venue, I went directly to the VIP suites that are located upstairs. The suite I was in had a bar right next to it, therefore when I requested food or drinks, the waitstafff came quickly as they were within earshot. Unlike others who mentioned long waits for service, I think it largely depends upon what tye of admission you are have (general, standing room vs. suite, vs. lower level seating). This is the first outdoor venue I've been to in Central Texas that has suites. It should also be noted that those who have suits also have thier own VIP bathrooms (not porta-potties). Therefore, my opinion of the seating, bathrooms and view of the event is probably slanted because of the type of access I had. *Here's a tip, if you have a membership to the golf course next door, you can sit and listen to the music for free* Once outside the suite, the general merchandise area and event merchandise area was fairly lackluster. Aside from the stereotypical astronomical prices, this section and selections was generally unimpressive. There appeared to be several food options from Texas Barbecue to Nachos with minimal wait for food offerings. The sound of the event was good but not great. This isn't a deal breaker for me as some of the performers had trouble with their equipment. Also for this event, I went to see Blues Travler and John had COVID so this wasn't the best showing for the group. There was another lead singer reading lyrics from a sheet and as everyone knows that no one can be John other than John Popper. I left this concert early as I wanted to avoid the same issue I had getting into the venue with the traffic. I am not sure based upon this showing that I would return to an event here.

We took the back way into town from Austin which turned out to be a very scenic drive along the ridge tops and also looking down into nearby Canyon Lake. Before we arrived, I was concerned about the arrangements of the performance venue as I had a general admission ticket, which is essentially standing room only. The staff at the facility did a great job of marshaling incoming automobile traffic into the parking areas, and managing the lines. We got through the ID and security checks quickly. There are also plenty of food and drink service points so you don't have to wait long for a beer or chow. While it got a little tiring to stand for the two acts, we were able to easily pick out a great spot to view the stage and did not have any issues seeing or hearing the performance. I would come back here to see other acts in the future. Recommended.
