I've been wanting to try this place for a while. Let me start by saying I'm not a huge bbq fan or connoisseur. The cashier was extremely friendly & helped with recommendations. I ordered the 1/4 rack of ribs, smoked wings with Carolina gold sauce, Mac & cheese, green beans with sweet corn bread. I also got a side of potato salad. The ribs were AMAZING-- seasoned well and very tender. They weren't tough, very easy to eat and enjoy. I did try the ketchup based bbq on a piece and it was good but honestly they did not need any sauce. The smoked wings were equally amazing. You could really taste that smoked flavor and they were cooked thoroughly with a slight crisp to the skin. The sweet corn bread was my favorite next to the ribs. The potato salad was not my preference and that's ok. I like mine a little thicker and more chunky texture. I was not used to yellow and red peppers inside but I will be back. I plan to try some other sides. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a "family cook out" meal because that's the feel it gave. Tender, flavorful, delicious. Small place right next to the railroad tracks. Inside has some decor with character. Got the 4 meat plate (can't remember the name of it on the menu)... but it was so good. Too bad I live in Anderson, SC or I'd be at this place weekly. I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars; it's that good! We went on a Saturday afternoon. It was a bit crowded at the door. We dined in, so we ordered at the register and waited for our food. The menu is straightforward and features aspects of Black History. For example, I ordered the John Henry, which is the pulled pork with two sides, mine were the greens and baked beans. You also can choose between cornbread and Texas toast. My husband had the wings, dry rub with Mac and cheese and vegan yellow rice. I love a BBQ joint that can get the meats and sides right, and this place is it! The pork was well seasoned, and I was able to put on as much sauce as I wanted. They give you 3 different sauces; I love the Carolina Gold. The greens were delicious and I wouldn't have ever believed they were vegan. The beans had a smoky flavor. The wings my husband had were crispy and well seasoned. The vibe in the restaurant made it feel like home. The owner was about talking to customers, and the walls of the restaurant were full of images, art, newspaper clippings, etc. The staff was very nice and checked on us often. To add, I love that you can have 3 different BBQ sauce on the sides. Price, it's on the expensive side. The plate we ordered cost $19.99 with 2 sides, it only came with 3 thin slices of brisket. I do a meat base diet, the brisket serving disappointed me but it was delicious. Service, not impressed. The food came in at about 20 minute mark after order was placed. I think this is long considering the meat are already prepared (smoked and BBQ) and I'm sure the sides as well. All they have to do is slice and heat it up. The group behind us in line with same number of people (3) was served before us, this always ruin my day. Ambience, the theme is a mix of college sports, blues, and history. We came in for a spur of the moment sunday lunch. You walk in and you get greeted with a nice vibe, surrounded by history in pictures, and a welcoming staff. Nice selection of barbecue: wings, sandwiches, awesome sides. With a half rib stack, you get a good five inches of rib that's mostly meat, so delicious. Food came out really fast and really is home cooked quality. Again, the staff was really welcoming and friendly to talk to. 10/10 recommend. We picked the right place! We visited at 11:30 AM on a Saturday morning and everything was fresh. Atmosphere, value, service, brisket, cornbread, beans, and potato salad all score a solid 'A.' OMG an amazing place for lunch. My office and I have lunch on Wednesdays. We love the loaded brisket fries. If you've read my reviews before you know I'm special, I create my own version of a dish. I hate spicy so I have to substitute and I don't like cheese sauce. I have the Queso on the side and I hate tomatoes. Yes, it's me not the restaurants. The Briskets is awesome. My co workers love the rice and hash and their wings. Overall we've never been disappointed. So why 4-stars and not 5 stars. They run our t of potatoes and there no adequate substitute for the loaded briskets. The food could not be so amazing if not for the amazing staff. I've never had a bad experience. The sweet cornbread, which Sharon recommended, was light and fluffy and a little bit sweet. The brisket did not need a knife to cut, the pulled pork and chicken were smoked perfectly and the ribs had that perfect bite. Try the spicy greens, you won't regret it! Consistently good BBQ after 15+ visits. I would stand behind their appetizers, particularly smoked wings and loaded brisket wedges( which are stupid awesome). Wings, pulled chicken. Pulled pork Brisket All worth a go as a mains. They are running a limited menu versus what they have on the board, but hopefully that gets back to normal eventually... sides have yet to disappoint.
