I will not come here again. The driest chicken I've ever had at any restaurant anywhere. Worse than lubys after it's been under the heat lamps. The brisket was ok flavored, but also drier than I would serve. This place isn't real busy for a Saturday afternoon with football on and cold beer on the menu. The coldish-luke warm Mac and cheese had almost no flavor, which is odd because kraft has mastered it out of a box. Pickles and onions did not disappoint as well as the French fries. Fries were fresh and hot, they got their own star. The soda was exactly as I would expect also, plenty of ice. Walking out I saw something so disturbing. They were microwaving their meat. This is a great BBQ place. When I got there they provided my food fast and it tasted great. I would recommend the pork ribs and the coleslaw. They have very good and very sweet tea. It has a very convenient location as well. Over all I would say this is a very good restaurant. read more

This is more of a place to stop if you are breezing by rather than a destination that you would go out of your way to get to. I had a brisket sandwich and it was just okay. The very white bread it came on was a little stale. Service was friendly but I noticed that on the menu the charge for a glass of water. Whats up with that? So we tried again last Sunday, and of course there were issues - the credit card machine was down and they had no response but to write the number and info down, run it thru later, and blah blah - uh no thank you Railroad. So here we go - Meats - we got a pound of ribs and half pound of brisket. The ribs were ok, meaty but very dry with little to no flavor other than smoky...the rub they used on these ribs was flavorless, really. The brisket was not very good, it had almost no smoke ring, the rub had way too much pepper, and the meat itself was chewy which told me it needed another couple hours in the smoker. Potato salad was weird consistency, strange flavor, and had some massive chunks of the potato alongside skin, chunks of pickle, and mashed potato clumps. The mac and cheese tasted like hospital or school cafeteria style - honestly the flavor and consistency of the product was not good, and I wish I had gone instead for the turkey sandwich and fresh fries - I think we will try that next time and give them one more shot, but with Stubb's close by now and Gordo's just as close, an extra ten minute drive is worth it for quality barbecue. Our meal cost us $35 bucks, plus tip. The girls were much better attitude wise this day, bu the lady running the register is not friendly and well, a bit flustered if the line is longer than one person. read more

My husband and I were traveling through town and were craving some Texas BBQ. We stopped at the drive through and had some of the best brisket we have ever had. The meat was well seasoned and juicy. The BBQ sauce was amazing. My husband also got some pork ribs and said "you can't cook a better rib." Customer service was excellent and food was ready in about 7 mins. I really don't know how this place could have a bad review. We loved this place so much, we had them cater our wedding!! The owner, Gerald, was SO easy to work with, and the food was absolutely delicious. So good, in fact, the groom opted for a gigantic of banana pudding instead of a cake! People are STILL talking about how good the food was and how they went up for seconds....and some even thirds!! To me, that is best case scenario! I would HIGHLY recommend Railroad BBQ....and being from Texas, that says a lot! read more

Good! I liked the RR BBQ in Kyle when I used to get over there more frequently. I wanted to try this location but it seemed like it needed some time to work out some kinks. Anyway, time up! I tried the 1/2 chicken which I think is hard to screw up if you know what you are doing. And it passed the test with flying colors! Maybe a little light on the spices but it was very moist, very flavorful (not too much smoke, and not too little (lots of joints I try miss this). Right on the mark. I can't wait to go back and try some of the other meats to see if they are as good as the chicken. If it is, I will increase my rating. read more

Came here with my mom one day on my lunch break. I got the chopped beef sandwich with beans and potato salad. My mom had the brisket plate. We both really liked it. My sandwich was sooo good. Not too sloppy, but tender meat and really good sauce. Soft bun, too. The sides were fine. If I had a craving for chopped beef and was in the area, I'd definitely come again. read more

I've had worse but won't be back here. I ordered 3 sandwiches: turkey, brisket, and brisket and sausage. All were VERY dry and tasteless. I'm positive the turkey was reheated because it tasted like refrigerator. The sausage wasn't greasy at all (a positive in my book) but had zero smoke flavor. The brisket had a nice texture but again NO SMOKE FLAVOR. On the positive side, I really liked the bbq sauce and the price is reasonable for the 1/2 pound of meat on each sandwich. We hired Railroad BBQ in Dripping Springs to cater our daughter's wedding reception after dropping in a few times to try the food. I don't understand some of the negative reviews because we love their food and couldn't be more pleased. The food was a big hit with our 145 guests and BBQ was the perfect complement to our Hill Country wedding. Several guests mentioned they were delighted we didn't serve the typical dry chicken entree. Gerald was a pleasure to work with and was responsive to calls and emails. He was patient with us as we made changes to our menu and followed up to ensure everything was in order. His team arrived on time, set up promptly and interacted well with our guests. They cleared tables and took care of everything. They exceeded my expectations and their price per person was great! read more

I've been a fan of the Salt Lick and Rudy's when I wanted something closer. We drove by here the other day and stopped in before reading the reviews. Yikes, wish we had read the reviews first! The place is nice and clean, and the staff is nice, but the food leaves a lot to be desired. The brisket is dry and bland. The turkey was the best thing we had there, but it was on the bland side a bit as well. The chopped beef was seriously lacking in texture and was more of a mush than anything else. Also, prices are definitely on the high side here. I will not be going back, and would personally never recommend it to anyone else. read more

We eat at Railroad a couple of times a week. Good BBQ at a good price. It's a staple around the office. Their catering service is great too.

I recently gave this bbq place a second chance and glad I did. Even at 8:30 pm, 30 minutes before closing, the brisket and chicken were tasty and moist. Service was good. The restaurant, including the bathrooms, was very clean. Good indicator of employees that care about the food also. I will be back. read more

I really wanted this place to be good, since it is close to where I live, but unfortunately, that's not the case. I have been here several times with the off-hand chance that they would learn as they go and get better, but I'd have to say no. I spoke with the manager and asked what they had that was gluten free. I was told what they had that was. I'll take a detour here: As is often the case in this area, read: near Austin, there is a lot of ignorance about what gluten free means. It does NOT mean what a lot of people think, that if the label do not list gluten, it is Gluten Free. Flour containing wheat, barley, rye or related grains contain Gluten. In addition, because of the FDA's brilliance, depending on the amount, Gluten can be left off the nutritional information, and be lumped in under spices, or natural flavors. Unless it say GLUTEN FREE on the label of anything having an ingredients list, it's NOT gluten free. Secondly, if you are to claim that something is Gluten Free, a separate area with separate utensils etc must be used in order to avoid cross-contamination. People sensitive to Gluten react to amounts of a few PPM (Parts per million). That is less than 0.5 milligrams per pound, or less than 1/60000 of an oz. This is less than the amount of a small bread crumb. Tossing a pizza in the same kitchen, makes it so everything there is exposed to gluten. So, after further questioning, it turns out that many of the items are likely NOT Gluten Free. I ordered what I felt was safest, but I still got sick. Far to many people take this too lightly, it's not just an inconvenience, like an allergy, that might make you sneeze. There is actual intestinal damage that lasts up to several weeks and gives the sufferer stomach-flu like symptoms for several days or longer. As far as the food's flavor, it was not good. The ribs were hard, really hard, and not very flavorful. The lean brisket was dry, the moist brisket was full of fat, yet still kind of dry. The sides were pretty awful. read more

We stopped in for the first time here a few weeks ago for a late lunch on a Saturday, around 1 pm. We were the only customers inside the restaurant. We got our menus and placed our orders. I ordered the chicken fried steak strips with french fries, and a beer. My wife ordered a chopped beef sandwich with a side salad. While my chicken fried steaks strips were decent, my wife said her chopped beef sandwich had no kick and no flavor. She took about 3 bites of her side salad and said it was awful. Typically we usually get BBQ from Rudy's so this was her comparison standard. The place was decent inside. The booths were a bit dirty, like they hadn't been wiped down from the lunch crowd. The TVs were a nice tough. We may go back again if we are craving BBQ but don't want to drive into Austin. read more

Me and RR got to Dripping about the same time. The thing most people don't get about Railroad is it's unique and simple approach to food. Make it good and give the customer a reason to come back. And smoke your meats w Mesquite. If I ever want a smoked rib that tears nicely off the bone, I go to RR. If I want a pound of freshly cut fires, I go to RR. If I want a simple but especially delicious chicken, I go to RR (to hell w HEB). If I need to cure a hangover, I go to RR for the chop sandwich. If I want some veggies, I eat the potato, loaded. (It also cures hangovers). The corndogs are kickass and so are the onion rings. And catch them at lunch on the brisket. It always seems best then. Rock on RR. Thanks for all the good food. read more

I give 5 stars to the food, 5 to the service people and 0 to their management. I called the Railroad BBQ 10 days before a party I was having in honor of my husband. I talked to Jessica who said Gerald would call me. Gerald called twice leaving a message each time and I returned his calls, but never spoke to Gerald. I called Jessica again 4 days before my get-together and she in a somewhat snippy voice told me I would have food for my party and Gerald had told me the cost. When I told her that he hadn't, she mellowed a little, but told me not to worry, the order would be ready. The night of the party, I called to get the cost so I could write the check. The restaurant had no knowledge of my order. Jessica had been sick for a couple of days. I admit, I lost my temper at this point! The service people rallied and my food was ready when we arrived to pick it up. And it was very good. I do think, however, that the Railroad BBQ could save itself a lot of money by cutting back on some of its management staff who seem to be doing little for the business. read more

I consider myself a connoisseur of bbq. This place is good. Very good. I've been there a half dozen times since they opened in November. The quality is spot on every time. And they have a very friendly staff. The mesquite flavor permeates throughout the place and the food. The ribs, brisket, sausage, chop, turkey is all excellent.
