I visited Lek's Railroad Thai this past weekend to explore their vegetarian options. | ordered the Kow Pud without any shrimp, chicken, or beef and was thoroughly satisfied. It is essentially fried (or steamed rice) with eggs, onions, scallions, peas, and carrots. They gave me a generous serving size and at a very wallet-friendly price. The staff were also super friendly and the service was very fast. The interior was very clean and the restaurant supplied inside and outside seating so there was a lot of space. If you are ever in the downtown area, strongly advise giving this place a chance. read more

Under new management, seems like they missed a beat. Food was just "ok", not as good as usual. Noodles were kind of clumpy, veggies were a mix and match of undercooked and over, nothing terrible, just off a bit from where it used to be. Sushi was fresh and a large portion, so that was a plus. They had a large party, but waitstaff was understaffed, which caused delays, and got the order wrong- missed my drink and an appetizer, but they didn't charge for it, so never made it from waitress to kitchen. Ordered from the lunch menu and had the masuman with chicken no potatoes no peanuts. The portion size was great based on lunch and the lunch prices. I ordered the dish hot so it was nice and spicy. My friend had the red curry and it was good but my masuman was better not too much peanuts in the base of the sauce. This business has been open way before my time. I grew up on this restaurant from the pad Thai to my fav sushi roll bama crunch.

Nice location in the downtown/river side of Montgomery. Had dinner with a number of friends. The staff was great as our party grew above the reservation. I was surprised to see that it had a full bar. For the number of people in noir party, the staff was very attentive and we didn't have to wait for water refills. Definitely a plus. I ordered a spicy tuna roll as an appetizer and some curry as the course. The roll arrived with all of the appetizers. I will say it was much larger than I expected and had very good flavor. The curry was really good and a filling portion. I wish it was spicier and I own that as I didn't inquire. for Thai it wasn't bad and if I have the craving while in the downtown area, I would visit again. read more

We had an incredible dinner here! We started with Thai Tea, which was super sweet and good. We ordered the shrimp fried rice, Tom yum soup, house made gyoza/dumplings with bamboo, and pad Thai. All of it exceeded expectations. We had great service, and the staff couldn't have been sweeter. The price was good for what all we got. The restaurant was clean and well decorated. I can't say enough about this place! Went there 2 days in a row and just as good both times. Had the "pud thai" which, despite the irregular conventional spelling, was excellent and might be the best I've tried. Ever. The chicken and rice soup and the spring roll were also right on point. The service is the only thing that could be improved, as the servers weren't the nicest, but they were fast and efficient and seemed nice to the obvious regulars, so I totally get it. They also had a nice outdoor patio next to the old train depot which was charming as well. Overall, great place and I'll be returning every time I come back to Montgomery! read more

When she brought the food, I only felt one container in the bag. I asked if she got the spring rolls and she said they were in the bag. Best place I have eaten in Montgomery all week! Three stars compared to other Thai and sushi places I've been to but four stars for Montgomery... Chicken Panang was okay. Wish I had ordered medium spicy (didn't specify anything when I ordered) and there were huge pieces of chicken, wish it had been chopped smaller (supposed to be easy for chopsticks). The basil was delicious as were the little strips of red pepper..wanted more of that to go with every single bite of chicken. Ginger chicken was okay too- wanted more flavor, more ginger and less onions. They have regular fluffy rice but I love some thai sticky rice or at least sticky calrose rice. I had the "Crazy" sushi maki roll with salmon skin, eel, scallion, avocado and asparagus topped with masago. But I think it was actually topped with tobiko and it was good. Street parking was easy on a Saturday- they don't ticket around there on weekends and after 5 pm during the week. Otherwise they say park on the 2nd floor of the parking garage. We love curry, so we were hoping to find a place that does it well. My daughter and I split the masaman curry, which was pretty good. It was definitely enough for only one person, but we only had to pay 25% more than restaurants we've been to in the past My wife and son each ordered a sushi roll. They were good too. Overall, so far the best curry we've had in Montgomery, nice ambience, some portions kind of small, but all prices kind of high. To be fair, it's not the only restaurant in the area that suffers from this problem. Maybe lunch is more reasonable. It's pretty irritating how pricey restaurants are in Montgomery, compared to the DFW area where we moved from about a year ago. Can these places charge exorbitant prices because there are so many government workers living high off of tax victims? Or is there just not enough competition that they can hike up their prices? read more

A friend and I had dinner at Lek's RR Thai in December. The place is interesting. It's actually in Montgomery's old railroad station, hence the name. And judging from the all the memorabilia on the wall, Lek must have been a Thai Air Force office and the restaurant appears to have fans at Montgomery's Maxwell AFB. Now to the food and the experience. This is pretty standard Thai food. The kind you can find in strip malls across the US. It's perfectly fine, but not especially interesting. The Thai taste is toned down, presumably to appeal to American taste. But the wonderful interplay of spices and flavor that make Thai cuisine so wonderful are downplayed as a result. But the weirdest thing is that this is the only Thai restaurant I've ever been in where there were no welcomes, no smiles, and frankly little interest in the diners. Maybe there had been a tragedy in the Lek family. Maybe this was an off night. "Meh, I've experience better" sums it up pretty well. It's not Lek's Railroad Thai, but Lek's Diffident Thai. read more

A Thai restaurant that is located in a historic train station called the Montgomery Union station in Downtown Montgomery. I went there when they just opened for the lunch and noticed that they got busy fairly quick. It was hard for me to flag someone down in order to get my order in as well as pick up the check. I ordered three items: Fresh spring rolls, Tom Yum Chicken, and Pad See Ew. I found everything fairly expensive and not worth it. The fresh spring rolls were decent like most places. The Tom Yum Chicken was probably the tiniest bowl I have ever seen. I ordered the large which reminded me of a medium size bowl branded corelle with diced white onions, sliced mushrooms, and pieces of chicken. I wasn't really sure what I was eating for $11. The pad se ew was nicely plated and portioned making it a one to two people meal. I think overall, it was just okay. It didn't really give me that wow factor of the food being amazing. Not all restaurants are perfect, but when you go to a restaurant that is favored by the locals and looks authentic, you would at least expect them to make a staple dish right or at least taste decent. read more

I can't count how many times I've eaten here over the years. It's pretty standard spot for folks from the nearby base to stop in with friends and family, especially for lunch. I was back in town and wanted to enjoy some for-sure Thai food. I saddled up to the bar (it was packed with lunch time eaters) and was quickly served. They have a pretty comprehensive lunch menu and I stuck with my go-to Pud Thai. They've changed spiciness settings, if you will, from a number to just med-hot-super hot, so I went with Hot. I requested a drink while I waited for my Lyft but the waitress said "no." No kind that I just paid $40 for one meal and was looking to spend more money while I wait 5 minutes for my driver. Who knew that Montgomery, AL has one of the best Thai restaurants in the country! I was in town with my brother to visit my grandparents who recently moved in with my uncle. My uncle has been going to this Thai place for years and has become somewhat of a legend with the owner. Also, you should know that my uncle has been to Thailand and swears this place is still the best Thai food he has ever eaten. I ordered the pad Thai beef with a Thai iced tea. So good! Medium spicy was good but I added a light glaze (be careful!) of the hot pepper seasoning. Just perfect. Not on fire, I'm going to cry hot, but added just the right amount of heat. It was a slightly sweeter pad Thai then I'm used and I loved every bite! Side note, this seems to be a popular spot in the military community to eat so chances are you will run into someone with a crew cut here. Happy eating! read more

Well that was a little disappointing. In from Virginia and wanted a restaurant near my hotel. Love some good Thai and love historic buildings, so this seemed like a win. Got Won Ton soup and the wontons are clearly frozen, so I got one won ton and one chicken sliver. Nervous so I just drank the broth. Watched the waitress break up ice in the bin, so my ice water tastes off. My chicken satay is also not fresh chicken, but previously frozen. My peanut sauce is pretty watery. Also no silverware was provided, so I'm sort of eating my satay off of a fork. I suspect that this place was once a well loved and well run establishment, so they could turn it around, beautiful location and could be very nice once more. read more
