Was very hungry for a 9" St Louise style pizza. The menu listed multiple sizes and said St Louis was not available in 10". I ordered a size other than 10" (ordered 9") but they said they can't make that either... need to remove the option from the menu if can't make it. Ended up with an Italian sandwich and fries which was very good, but was highly craving the pizza which was on menu (the reason we came to Sam's but not allowed to order). read more

Over the years I've heard positive stuff about Sam's Pizza, from both locals and non-locals. I finally went there last year, and have been there a couple other times for their lunch buffet. As much as I hate to say it, their pizza does not impress me. I'll explain the pizza: it may seem like St. Louis-style but its not. It is not cracker-crust with provolone. Instead, it is like something you find in the frozen foods section in the supermarket (not DiGiornio, but like Totino's and Red Baron). I don't know the best way to explain the crust, but more like chewy/crunchy. Next time you're in there see for yourself. Take the cheese, sauce and the toppings off and you'll see what I mean. Its like the place doesn't even make their own crust. I respect places that have their own recipe. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they do make their own crust, but I have yet to be convinced. On the other hand, some positives: the service was great, and the restaurant takes pride in the Highland community, as shown all over the place. We went in later on a Sunday with out of town visiting family. It was a hour before kitchen closing and the waitress gave us menus. Then about 3 minutes later she come back and says her manager closed the kitchen because of a "emergency at home". So we gather up our things then the drunk sounding kitchen manager slurs out. Hey y'all can order I'll cook it up. Meanwhile the other drunk "friends" who are laughing aren't helping. So we walked. Dude. OST his establishment probably $100 or so In orders on a slow Sunday. Wood floors make this place exceptionally loud. You can not hear your self think. The service is lackadaisical. Many little towns have small pizza joints in Southern Illinois. This is one of those. Most of the the pizza is solidly average. The bacon was terribly salty. The sausage mushroom pizza was really pretty good. The salad was amazingly fresh and although the salad dressing offered was ranch. It tasted homemade or of very good quality if bought. The cheese sticks were really good as was the t ravs. The wings were also tasty but only mild. If they can bring the heat they may have some good wings? All in all probably a 2.5, I do not know that the food will bring me back to deal with the service. read more

I'm from Jersey. We have a lot of Italians. And therefore, I was a little disappointed with Sam's and the St. Louis style of pizza. It tasted okay but it had a really thin crust. This is the best pizza in the area period. St. Louis Style 5 Meat is to die for. The atmosphere is hopping and the staff is friendly and prompt. As an added bonus they always have a very good craft beer selection on tap, not your run of the mill stuff other places in the area have. They typically get the rarer Perennial stuff on tap. Good Pizza and Wings and good selection of draft beers,would recommend eating here again

Went this evening for pizza with friends and had an hour to eat. Told the waitress at the very beginning that we were pressed for time so that our friends could make their appointment. First, we received our salad but our friends finally had to ask for theirs because our waitress never brought it. Then with 15 minutes left to eat we finally asked where our pizza was only to be told it had been delivered to the wrong table. Our friends had to leave before they could eat so we had to get it to go. Also, when she refilled the drinks, she put ski in the water glass and water in the ski glass!!!! They did take 15% off our bill but after everything that went wrong, it should've been free!! We hadn't eaten there in quite awhile and now I remember why!!! read more

Decent Pizza but I've had much better. Service is TERRIBLE and the place looks dirty. Disorganized slow service and very little parking.

First off, this is not St Louis style pizza. St Louis style is very thin crust with provel cheese. However, this pizza is a Highland icon. I think it is good. The cheese sticks are really good, with their marinara sauce. The BBQ chicken tenders with ranch on the side are really good. We like the cheese sticks and BBQ chicken tenders better than their pizza. Yum! I love to eat here with my family. read more

Stopped by for the first time. The place was really busy. The service was fast and friendly. Tried the appetizer sampler, the thin crust 5 meat pizza and the pizza sandwiches. Pizza was tasty. We all liked the cheese sticks. The sandwiches were just ok. Place appears to be very clean. It has lots of large tables for groups. 4 Stars only because I think the pizza prices are a little high. Had pizza from their new location in Breese and it was awful! Pizza crust was like cardboard. Tasted like it was a frozen pizza crust. Ordered a pepperoni pizza which you might as well called it a cheese pizza. The pepperoni was very scarce. The pizza sauce was not good and the cheese had a weird taste. Pizza was good, but for having made reservations with a large group, we only had one waitress. Went to the bar for drinks and to order food. Had to go get our own plates once pizza came. Had to get our own boxes for leftovers and had to ask for our ticket to pay. They didn't know who ordered what and some of our group didn't even get their food. Poorly organized on the restaurant's end especially for a friday night after 8. Ordering at a window and calling out for an order to picked up would be the best resolution for this restaurant as we have never had really good service here. read more
