been coming around the shop for the past 20+ years and get the same love to this day. granted, i didn't step foot in the shop for about 5 years, but the service hasn't changed. i never get up sold with things i don't need nor ever felt pressured to have to buy whatever they had in stock. they're honest with their suggestions, even with products that they may need to order. that's why i've continued to support the business. The prices are alright but I will say I found it off putting seeing the condition the fish are kept in. The saltwater fish are in the smallest individual display containers I've ever seen, they can barely turn around. I saw several dead or dying fish and there was nothing available for them to even hide or rest on. I can't financially support the way their specimen are kept. read more

Decent selection of fish, however they sold me 4 fish and 2 ended up dying, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and went back to get replacements ended up buying an extra two fish for a fully cycled and planted ten gallon. 2 of the four new fish died as of right now which means I have a very bad success rate. Not worth the drive to get my money back but I would stay away from this place!!! It may that they are buying from bad fish farms and wholesalers like Petco does. I been coming here for my saltwater and RODI water for years now. They have a good selection for saltwater and freshwater fish. Their prices are reasonable on fish, but on corals not so much nor their aquarium equipment/supplies. Family run business that is kept remarkably clean (store and tanks) and bright for a Aquatic animal store. Hours are generous. Prices on some items, like aquariums, corals, fish, live rock and salt mix are nicely competitive if not better than most. Prices on most other dry goods are not so good. Dry good pricing is not always marked, so you often have to ask, which is tedious. This store lies somewhere between a more traditional Aquatic pet store and a cutting edge high end store. They carry Nuvo rimless tanks, as well as the JBJ Rimless tanks. They also carry AI light fixtures, and a few other high end items. They also have a full line of Red Sea and Salifert test kits, while most other stores only carry the cheap API kits. If their dry good pricing was consistently competitive with online pricing, this place would be a home run. Once my tank is cycled, I will definitely be going back to Rainbow for livestock. read more

The store front looked shabby but upon entering it was nearly spotless. The floor and atmosphere of the place was clean and orderly. Practically all tanks were clear and no dead fish. Even the usually neglected Betta cups were being cleaned as I came in, so I knew immediately these people cared about the animals. I was shopping for some plants and when i asked an employee she was able to pull out a book on plants and identified the plant in question and even gave me a discount on one of them because it seemed to be partly dying. When i inquired about where some ghost shrimp were I was directed and then kindly and promptly attended by another helpful employee! TL;DR: Fast and friendly service, knowledgeable employees, bright and responsive fish, and to top it off very clean from floor to the water! I've been here multiple times and I have spent a good amount of money on freshwater fish. Bought two 8" Royal Plecos, a Green Phantom, and a Red Spotted Severum. All have died within a week. Nothing wrong with anyone else in my tank, not even my current Royal or the Cory catfish in my sump. When I got them I saw that they were not fed because their bellies were all sunken in and did not look very good. That was when I got home, over an hour away. Within a week all of these expensive fish have died, and I know they won't refund me or even give half credit. My tank had been tested and all levels are perfectly fine, and I have a few more Plecos that have never had a problem. For some reason every fish I've gotten here dies within a week. The same way every time. I fed them high quality foods and even cucumbers to get them healthy again, and still they all die the same way. I would not buy anything like this from here, and probably will not go by in the future. If anyone who works there sees this, please respond to me and tell me if you even feed your fish here. I know with many fish stores hey do not feed the fish they just hold them. I am not happy and will not be recommending this shop. The prices are low for a reason, don't buy your higher end fish here. read more

I purchased a powerhead for my 75 gallon tank based on the recommendation of one of the staff. It was a Rio 1100. It wasn't until after two fish died that I realized this powerhead was totally inadequate for my tank. The fish died because they weren't getting enough oxygen because the powerhead wasn't able to circulate the water properly. I will never trust them again. read more

I have been to this place a half dozen times and each time I go I find new freshwater fish that are just amazing and the prices are by far the best I have seen and I have been to several fish stores all over. The drive is a bit long from Newbury Park but in the long run I am always happy when I leave with my new little additions to my tanks. I have a 135g, 55g, and a 30g my big tank is the center of my living room and I love to just sit and watch my lil fishies all day my smaller tanks are for my smaller fish until they are big enough for my large tank and the other tank is for my really aggressive larger fish (they are getting even too much for me) which I have had since they were fry. I always come from Rainbow with intriguing new additions, they have such a variety that I can get a new type or more colorful addition almost each time I visit due to their low prices. I've been a regular customer since the early 90's and that was when the two brothers were still "wet behind the ears" and their father Celadonio was running the previous store "next door" on his own along with the help of his lovely wife. I watched the boys and the store grow into one of the best pet store in the Valley...not just fish, but for other "creature features". I started a finch collection with the help of Miguel, the youngest of the two boys and his supplier. He would "special order" rare breeds just for me and the supplier would get it "hook or by crook". It was definitely an "under the table" dealing thing which would be kept amongst ourselves. Having said that, that's beyond "excellent customer service" and everybody came out happy at the end. I still make my monthly visits and see what's new and I usually buy maintenance filters and bird seeds there (still at a much lower price than your "chain pet stores"). Many times mom and dad would be there to help out and to keep busy during their senior years. The two boys run the place now and has followed their father's impecable reputation for cleanliness and excellent customer service. Truly a testament to the old school ways to run a business and keep their customers coming back for more. After I finish this review, I'll be getting ready to go and see my friends at Rainbow Pet Shop...and just maybe I will find something else to buy that I wasn't intending to do. I am planning to upgrade my 38 gallon to an acrylic aquarium with a stand, canopy, and also new filtration. I went to Petco, PetSmart, Aquarium City in Canoga Park, and finally Rainbow Pet Shop. Thank you to my fellow Yelpers for suggesting this place! I bought my current setup at Aquarium City back in 2006, and almost bought another setup from there for my new upgrade, but there were a few things bothering me that made me hold off on the purchase. (See my Yelp review for Aquarium City in Canoga Park.) I looked on Yelp and found Rainbow Pet Shop. This is by far the best aquarium store I have been to. The people working there are friendly and really know their stuff. It can get busy on the weekends and you may have to wait a bit, but when they do help you, the info they give you is phenomenal. The guy who helped me, Alex, was great in answering all my questions regarding acrylics and the filtration, obtaining quotes for various setups (40 gallon, 60 gallon, canopy, stand) and really took the time to help me. I got my quote for the 60 gallon and I plan to come back here to get my setup when I have the money. Not only did they beat the price of other quotes I obtained elsewhere including Aquarium City, but the quality of the wood for the stand and canopy is REAL wood, not that cheap fake Ikea-type wood that most stands/canopies are made of. Kudos to their stand/canopy-maker who also does a great job with the piano hinges for the canopy- it is much better than the piano hinges I saw from other shops! Definitely check this place out if you're looking for quotes on a setup. I don't think their price/quality can be beat. read more

After reading the high rated reviews I had to check this out for myself. The first thing i noticed when I parked out in front is how deceiving the outside of the place looks my first thought was " what the hell " It looks like a rather small shop and not much going for it. I walked in expecting a letdown and to my suprise this place is big. The selection of livestock is amazing in both fresh and salt water. The supplies are price at an average of other shops however I did find a few items overpriced. As a African Cichlid hobbist the selection was more than I expected and the prices were better than most shops ON SOME species not all. The major deal breaker for me was the available mid sized ( 3 to 5 ) inch cichlids at a rather low price ( $9 ) adding to that getting a few ( 6 for $40 ) in a package deal, I have not had any issues with any fish EXCEPT one which I bought and became an overly aggresive fish. I had lost the receipt and to my suprised even after a week and a half the store owner allowed me to swap for a different fish. ( thanks guys and also Lizeth for the help ) I have been really or rather let me say extremely satisfied with this place. The selection, pricing, staff and customer service has been awesome. I suggest anyone into african cichlids to check this place out or anyone into the fish keeping hobby to check this place out. As far as me it has been worth the traffic headaches for the drive to the valley from LA. I'll be a long time customer of this place that's for sure. read more
