I had one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a contractor this morning when Rainbird showed up for my install. The co-owner told me he'd have to charge an extra $300 to bore under my sidewalk. I asked why that wasn't on their original quote when they first came to the property. His response was he didn't do the quote and his other owner did, and since it was several months ago something got "lost in translation" so I would need to pay the $300 in labor or they wouldn't do the job! He also blamed me for changing the job (because they quoted me 3 zones and I decided I only want 1 at the moment) and for not telling them about the sidewalk (even though his partner did the original quote on-site AND I sent them pictures recently when I scheduled the actual install). He blamed the "lost in translation" on me (when it was between the 2 owners) instead of simply apologizing for the confusion. Had he done that professionally and kindly I would have probably just gone with it. I even offered to split the difference for the confusion but he refused. Instead he just said "forget it we're out of here" and then left! I've used MANY contractors over the past 15+ years in this house for so many different types of projects. This was certainly one of the most unprofessional and non-customer friendly experience I've ever had. I would absolutely not recommend this company to anyone. read more

Both of the partners responded immediately, were honest and kept me informed of the costs and even offered a Veteran's discount after seeing my bronze star license plate on the car without me saying a thing. This team have been phenomenal this summer. They were recommended to me by my neighbor to look at our irrigation system. Mr. Drake and his partners are the real deal. No hidden fees, no cutting corners, no trying to razzle-dazzle you with mumble-speak, no scaremongering, fishing for additional work, no parading their credentials in defense against questions or signs of reservation, no arrogance (yes, I've dealt with all of this in my journey). They do what they say they will do when they say they will do it. Mr. Drake and his team showed up at my house around 7:30am this morning and were gone by 10:45am. They built my system for my current needs with the stubbing for additional growth (I will be totally relandscaping my backyard, removing loathsome shrubbery and trees). They stand behind their work with a lifetime warranty. Who does that anymore? You're doing something if you can get 3 to 5 years these days. Make sure to get your pricing up front!!! All these guys did was complain when they showed up on how much work it was and that they are so busy. I had the feeling that they did not even want to be there. When is was all said in done, they had a handful of parts and 1.5 hours labor and the bill was $625! EEEEEKK! I asked for an explanation and it was like they children throwing a fit. They tried to show me some spreadsheet with their competitors on there to justify the cost. I'm sorry but $625 for 5 sprinkler heads, 1.5 hours of labor and a handful of fittings does NOT add up. Again, I was happy paying their hourly rate and $45 per $10 sprinkler head but then they tried to charge me $220 for a handful of fittings. I was told that they will void my warranty if I did not pay in full. They also said repeatedly said, "you are welcome to call our competitors next time." You know what, I WILL!!!! Jeff and his crew did a great job. The yard looks great due to the coverage. When I got my first estimate it was so good that I decided to expand the project to cover the back yard too. They showed me how to get the best coverage for the least amount of money. Their expertise at designing, installing and setting up the system was great. They have been very good fixing any problems including next day response to fix a line cut by the phone company. I highly recommend them for your system. I have notice some complaints about cost and response. Last summer was a drought, it prompted me to get a system as a lot of other people. They were extremely busy but still gave me an estimate of how long it would take to get to me. Also anyone can go and grab a handful of parts at a hardware store, it take knowledge and experience to design install and repair your system. They are definitely worth the cost. read more

We had a broken sprinkler line that we thought we could fix on our own...but it went weeks and we never found the time to do it (a 5 month old baby takes every free minute!). They were quick to provide their rates and had great availability...the next day! My work schedule is pretty hectic, so I asked if they could do the work without having someone home. They said that was fine, and that they'd give me a call on their way to my house and if they had any issues. They kept to their word, called on their way and I opened the garage remotely (best investment on the wi-fi garage door opener btw). They fixed the issue and took pictures to document it and tested the system. They even fixed an issue that's been bugging us forever! But Rainman did not call me back -- EVER -- and I called repeatedly over a period of weeks! Don and Jeff were very punctual and professional in the repair of a cracked line which had been crushed by a tree root. They dug up the root and repaired the line in a professional manner. The only issue that I have is how they calculated the price.. Don had told me over the phone that they charge $90 for a house call and that usually covers most basic repairs. They were at my home for about 45 minutes and when they completed the job Jeff called out $210... This was before a detail bill had been created, When the bill was written out it come to $210..It almost seemed like the amount was backed into because...there was a labor charge of $120 and then a charge for "parts" of 4 x $20 ($80) which was for 4 bridges or in laymen terms couplers and then a $10 charge for wirekit. TOTAL PARTS COSTt $90 !! Now I don't have an issue with the $120 labor charge since it was difficult work BUT when I questioned how can they charge $80 for 4 fittings (couplers) Don said it was for the labor/knowledge to know how to put the "bridge" together. I didn't want to make a big deal about it but there already was a labor charge for $120 so why couldn't they just charge me the actual cost of the 4 couplers which would have been around $10 in total at most... I am looking at $90 worth of parts which consist of a few couplers a few inches of pipe and a foot or two or 14G wire with a couple of connectors.. Now I don't really care how they breakout the cost of a job since the final amount is what you pay but I really felt that they inflated the bill by the $90 "parts" MY ADVICE: Before Don and Jeff start a job for you ask them what will be the final out the door price of the job.. This mean any parts they may use and labor and any trip fees. read more

A huge thank you to Rainman for their quick, and professional trouble-shooting and repairs. They repaired broken sprinkler heads, detected leaks I didn't know I had, and changed some sprinkler heads so my yard would be watered more efficiently. Don and his partner (sorry can't remember his name) are both very professional and extremely knowledgeable about the irrigation system. They offered free consultation to my problem and and was able to provide an affordable solution to my issue. They were able to fit me into their busy schedule and make sure I am completely satisfied before they finish their work. BILLing: the pricing is clear and transparent, they don't over charge you. Everything they do is documented and has a price clearly stated and back by life time warranty. They finish the job within budget and on time. What more can you ask for? I chose Rainman because of its top ranking on Yelp. Big mistake! For starters, you are paying for two people to do a one-man job. (One guy does the work, the other offers moral support.) Far worse, though, is their pricing of materials. They will tell you that their prices are clearly indicated in their invoice, which is true. (Although they never shared it with me prior to my approving their estimate for the work.) They won't tell you how much they mark it up. I was charged $130 for a Hunter valve. An internet search revealed several Hunter sprinkler valves for far less: $19.99 at the Dripdepot, for example. Lowes offers a valve from another manufacturer for $12.97. These are retail prices. My guess is that they paid no more than $15 for the valve that they charged me $130. That is a markup of 767 percent! Worse yet is their markup of the PVC pipe and fittings. Lowes sells a 10-foot section of 1-inch pipe for $2.64. They sell 1-inch elbow fittings for $0.98 each. My job required maybe 3 feet of pipe and 10 elbow fittings. (These are generous guesses.) Throw in $0.56 for pipe dope and cement and we are talking about a cost to Rainman of $13 in terms of retail pricing. Their charge to me: $160. That is a markup of 1131 percent! Long after the fact, I recognized that I had been taken advantage of, so I challenged them on these issues. I pointed out that the markups that they use are excessive and that they take unfair advantage their customers' ignorance of what these items actually cost. I told them that they should be ashamed of this disreputable business model. Their response: "You're welcome to compare us to other competitors that match our qualifications. Thank you." I only wish I had. You should. read more

Called and setup a time to have them give me a quote and everything seemed great. Nathan was going to show up between 8-9 am. I called at 9am asking where he was and he stated he was running late but was sorry and would take 10% off for the hassle. Gave him the benefit of the doubt and selected him for the work. They showed up on time the day the work was scheduled (about a month from quote). About an hour in they had a mechanical brake down of their equipment which I totally understand. Nathan had to leave and get it serviced and I said that's fine call me when you get it repaired. I waited 2 days and called back and asked for an update. He had fixed his machine but was now telling me that had work scheduled the next two weeks and I would have to wait And he wasn't going to push anyone's appointment. Totally unprofessional to push me to the back of the line when I already had an appointment with them first. they can't leave a job and they have to finish when they justify showing up late to you and then also say other customers have appointments they cannot push back their appointments when they haven't finished your job. Can't have it both ways! read more

Had to wait 3 weeks for an appointment and he called 3 days prior to confirm I will be there the whole day so I can approve the estimate, they can complete work and get paid. Well they did not show at 10 am so at 11 am I called to see if running late etc. and left voicemail. At noon I text and still no response by 1 pm. No show and no call, disrespectful to say the least and doesn't make sense to me. at 1:30 pm I decide to call from another number and no surprise Don answered, he made lame apologies for having emergency calls however makes no excuse for not letting me know by phone or text that he wasn't coming and then just referred me to a local company that has a 4 week wait time. I called on a Friday night expecting to leave a message and Don answered the phone. I needed our sprinkler system checked because it wasn't turning on and we had not run it in a couple of years. Don told me they were booked but would try to fit us in between appointments on Monday. On Monday morning I called to confirm that they were able to fit us in and he said they were on their way. When they arrived they tried to run our sprinkler from the console and the sprinklers wouldn't turn on. They opened the water meter valve (which had been shut off unbeknownst to us) and water began spewing out from broken PVC pipes and sprinkler heads when we ran through the zones. Some sprinkler heads had been hacked by our gardener and others were covered by grass because of non-use. In less than two hours they had checked and repaired or replaced all the broken sprinkler heads, broken pipe, reset our timer and watered our lawn for the first time in months. Don and Jeff (father and son and also co-owners) work so well together, were so enthusiastic/knowledgeable about their field and so friendly. Their price to do all of this was very reasonable (less than I thought it would be, for sure). Do yourself a favor and have them work on your irrigation problems. Zero stress. read more
