My co-worker had a celebration for his daughter's first birthday here. Located on W. Winton, the facility has a small parking area on the right and a larger parking lot on the left side. A stage and dance floor was set up in the middle with five tables on the left and right sides. There was a bar on the right side with a lady manning it and bartending for the evening. She did a great job given there was about a hundred people at the party. Before the dinner, appetizers were served in the food area on the left. Warming trays had Mix Pakora, Samosa, Chicken Kabab, Fish Pakora and sweets and Gulab Juman. After a cake smash and dancing, dinner was served. The warming trays had Chana marsala, Shahi paneer, Tawa sabji, chicken marsala, lamb curry, nan and rice. I've only tried a couple Indian foods in the past, but I was able to expand my horizons and tried many different Indian dishes at this party. All in all, the food was very delicious. Servers were walking around and cleared plates from the tables and brought new carafes of water. Good only for catering. If you order for pickup it is a hit or miss. Most of the curries are soaking in oil and possibility left overs from preparations made for events in the banquet hall. We have ordered catering and the food has had good quality and taste. On occasion we order kulchas and those are freshly prepared. Would be nice if they maintained the place well and also kept it open for dine in and buffets while managing their event commitments in parallel. Came here for an engagement party. The decor was pretty with up lighting along the walls and a cute door area. The food was also good, I liked how the samosas where mini so you could pick up just the right amount. Pani puri came with the option of sweet or hot water l. Staff was very friendly and attentive. In a word: DON'T. For all of the reasons others have given, find other providers of Indian cuisine. If their comments haven't already dissuaded you, PLEASE learn from my mistake! The place is cavernous and neither employees nor signage will help you find your way. "Simply forage" is the unspoken command. We were confused by the "Wait to be seated" sign still there from the previous business. Raja now expects you to find an employee to seat you. Because the building is so large, it looks and feels like a barn. The high ceilings feature "barn-like" supports and the building must be impossible to keep warm. I guess that is why they don't even try; several diners wore coats during dinner. Though the waiter was baffled by virtually everything we asked (Can we get silverware? Do you have chili sauces to bring us? Can we get more water?) I don't automatically think the place won't be good. Perhaps he is new, hard of hearing, or the owners not-very-bright cousin. In this case, it might have been all three. Still, when the soups came (one shrimp, the other mulligatawny) they were superb. "Ahh, THIS is why they are still in business" I thought. But I was wrong. The rest of the dishes were mediocre and we never did get the sauces. At the end of the meal, I stepped away. As I made my way. I saw wall paper peeling off the walls, cob webs, and the MOST atrocious restroom I have ever seen in a public place. I spare you the details because I assume you are reading this while hungry and I won't ruin your appetite for another eatery. Even if ALL the food had been great, I would never go there again. I like Indian food, since I was a kid, I've been a huge fan of homeade curry dishes etc. Went there with a few co-workers, after driving past for years...it's got that creepy feeling as soon as you walk in, like I should just order the water and leave. Used to be an Italian place years ago, and it's just huge, seats well over 100 people, and I always like it when the parking lot is empty at lunch. Not a good sign I'm not big on buffet's, unless I know the place well, glad I was not paying for this crap. My 4 stars is for their FOOD. More specifically, for their Fish Pakoras, "worth-it" prices, and their friendly customer service. Now, if I were to rate their actual restuarant location, restuarant cleanliness, and things then this would be a 2 star review. Best place to have any type of Celebration. I recently had my Son's first birthday party at Raja and they did an excellent job. GIANI JI was so nice, met him for the first time and he treated us like a family; very humble person. I went to decorate the place day before and they offered us tea and Barfi to my family. They catered to all my needs and very easy and friendly to deal with. Everyone loved the food; Specially FISH PAKORAS :) Plus they gave fresh jalebis to my guests. Everyone was so happy. I like this place. Lunch is good, the naan comes fast and it is wonderful. The drinks are cheap at night (happy hour lasts a long time). We can feed a whole group, very well, at this place. It's our choice for larger parties. It is also not crowded at night, so service is pretty good. I hadn't been here for a long time and tried the buffet. Nearly everything was lukewarm that day. I told a couple of the servers who then went and checked the flames underneath the chafing dishes, but by then I had lost my appetite (picturing upcoming food poisoning). I ate my naan and left. I came here for a weekend private reception. Raja Sweets is located west of the Winton Avenue - Hesperian Blvd. intersection. I believe it used to be a steakhouse. The surrounding grounds are a bit overgrown, but I saw some workers attacking the bushes, so maybe they can fix it up a bit. There is some parking to the right of the restaurant, and some handicapped parking immediately to the left of the restaurant, but most of the parking is to the far left and behind the restaurant. The entrance is in the front on Winton. Not sure if Raja is open as a lunch or dinner spot, so this is a review of the place for receptions. It's kind of Spartan in0side without much adornment except for this parachute like silk fabric ceiling. It's pretty large inside. he fried shredded veggies tasted like chicken to me and was OK. The veggie samosa was OK as was the chicken kabob which was typically too dry for me. Nothing special here this day. read more

I'm not a buffet fan, except when it comes to Indian buffet. Pros: The food was very tasty. They seperated the meat and veggie dishes. I could watch airplanes take off and land. There was a lot of space, and a nice court yard adjacent to the airport. Cons: I arrived near the end of the lunch buffet, and the service was nearly non-existent. I had to find someone to seat me ("Please wait to be seated"). The free Naan came near the end of my lunch, and obviously wasn't made in a stone oven. I had to ask them to get my check after 15 minutes of sitting there doing nothing. I think they should hire more servers. If you work in Hayward near the bay, this place is nice for something quick...but go to Favorite Indian Restaurant if you have time. read more

Wow! Food is amazing! We had Chana Samosa, Palak Paneer, Chana Masala, Naan, and rice. Honestly this is the best Indian food Ive had. Guess what?!! The chef isn't even Indian! He's Mexican. We were shocked. My bf is Punjabi and he thought it was Punjabi cooks because of how great the Indian flavor was. The service was amazing as well. The server talked to us and when we told him how Great the Food was he brought out the chef! He told us that we were the first people to dine in because they cater and have alot of events there. This place has the best Indian food in the bay, hands down. It can be a little intimidating because it is kind of in the middle of nowhere and no one is ever at the door to greet you, or seat you (The first time I went there I thought they didn't allow walk-ins!). Here is what you do: Don't be shy, walk your happy hiney to the bar and sit down. Even if you're not drinking. Frank (the usual bartender) is awesome! Now order whatever makes you happy. I tend to stick to the Chicken Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala or the Tandoori Chicken. (I love my chicken!). I can vouch for all of those dishes, they always come out fresh and delicious, the naan is pure perfection! If you ask for it spicy you will get it so make sure you love that Indian spice (I know I do). I have not tried the lunch bar, so I can't say anything about that, I'd suggest ordering fresh to really enjoy the amazing food here (Especially after some of those negative reviews, yeesh!). Oh did I mention that every night of the week they have different specials at the bar? We've always had a good experience at this hall! We've decorated and attendees numerous events here and each one has been better than the last! One of our favorite venues in the Bay Area (believe it or not)! The outside isn't the best and parking can be an issue depending on the number of guests. Last year in June my brother and his fiancée had their engagement party here, and this year in March I had my Sangeet/mehndi here. Everything was smooth and the staff were great to work with. Having the outdoor space in the summer really helped out, as it allowed for guests to wander outside and enjoy the breeze. It did get kind of stuffy inside even with the AC on full blast- but it was one of the hottest days! Bar tenders and a DJ are available for hire if needed and we were even able to have the decorator go in the night before to set up. We also dropped off all of our alcohol the night before, which made things so easy on the day of. And were able to pick up our stuff the next day. Obviously this is only obtainable if they don't have another booking the night before or day after. Everyone commented on how great the food was and everything was served in a timely manner for both events. The food was warm and everything was labeled. We also used their pick up/catering service for an event at home in January and each food item was wrapped meticulously to prevent spilling in the car. Their fish pakoras were the best! I had been to this place before but not for the food. Apparently this place serves as a party hall too and i've been to different parties here. This time around however, it was for a dear friend of mine and she happens to be Indian. I am not sure if the food was catered through here or another restaurant but in any case. The food was unpleasantly bad. It was tasty but after finding two nasty ass hairs in my food, i stopped eating anything else! Two hairs... in different dishes! SAMOSAS! SAMOSAS! SAMOSAS! Every once in a while, my coworker would bring me some samosas. Never knew where they came from, never knew if it was homemade or not. Now i know! She called her father and asked to buy a dozen..all were for me! So damn nice! These are, by far, thee best Samosas i ever had! The dough is so light, buttery and delicate. The filling of potatoes and spices were so smooth and clean tasting. It had such a nice little kick from the peppers/spices that were in there. Now i know where to get these bad boys! Some of the best Indian food I've ever had, and I especially love their garlic naan. This is a local place that does mostly catering and banquets, so don't be fooled by how it's never full inside during lunch or dinner business hours. Raja has some of the best Indian food in the bay, the only reason this place doesn't get five stars is that it's a little intimidating at times, (at night, it's so empty it seems like a scary drug front). Just stick to going there for a late lunch or for dinner and you'll be fine. This place seriously has some awesome food and their little serving bowls seem almost bottomless with food. The Naan's are a little small, so order one or two extra. I was invited to a birthday party by an Indian family at this restaurant, there was a huge buffet with lots of dishes, lamb stew, chicken stews in curry sauces, japati,rotis, salads, vindaloos, I had 3 servings of the spicy delicious food and was very satisfied. The staff was very courteous and polite, the bartender was a nice friendly young lady in her early 20s,so I definitely like this place right away. Parking was good, so its a great place for a party.
